Nigerian Beauty of the Month: Agbani Darego

Young, beautiful and natural, Agbani Darego is a young woman full of promise. Born in Lagos, Nigeria. She is the Sixth of Eight Children. At the age of two, she was moved to Port Harcourt, Nigeria of which she recalls her Childhood as loving and memorable, although tainted with the loss of her mom who died of breast cancer, when she was eleven. She attended Bereton Montessory Nursery & primary school, Federal Government Girls College (F.G.G.C) Abuloma, of which she was awarded “Most distinguished Alumni” later in 2010, and the University of Port Harcourt, where she studied Computer Science for a year before her foray into the pageant world.

In 2001, she achieved great success when she won Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN). During her reign as MBGN she represented Nigeria in the 2001 Miss Universe competition, held in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. She placed among the top 10 semi-finalists, finishing seventh. She was the only black semi-finalist that year – and the only finalist to wear a maillot as opposed to the more popular bikini. Encouraged by her position at Miss Universe in 2001, Agbani then competed for Miss World, in November 2001 of which she won, becoming the first native Sub-Saharan African to claim the title. Her victory in the pageant was widely welcomed in her home country, and her one-year tenure included goodwill trips and scheduled appearances on behalf of the pageant. Agbani was honoured with the Nigerian national honour “Member of the Order of the Federal Republic” (MFR) after her win as Miss World in 2001. During her reign, she visited a number of countries which included the United Kingdom, South Africa, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, the United States, Germany, Italy, China, Spain and France. She also was a public favourite, as for the first time in the history of the Miss World Pageant; TV Viewers were invited to participate in the Final Vote. Since then, Agbani has made appearances at and judged the Miss World, Miss England, Miss Bulgaria, MR Scotland, Miss Tanzania and the Most Beautiful girl in Nigeria pageants.

The Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Film Hollywood is Talking about is Not Half of a Yellow Sun

Yes. Nigerian born British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor is trending right now in conversations on actors tipped for the Best Actor Oscar on Sunday, February 24, 2014. But it is not for his captivating role as Odenigbo in the Biafran War film "Half of a Yellow Sun" adapted from the award winning novel of the same title by celebrated Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi-Adichie.
Then for what?
For his more challenging and unforgettable role as Solomon Northup in Steve McQueen’s "12 Years a Slave", the 2013 historical drama film based on the autobiography Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C., in 1841 and sold into slavery. He worked on plantations in the state of Louisiana for 12 years before his release.
Hollywood is not even comparing it to his role in "Half of a Yellow Sun" and that should worry the producers of the British/Nigerian movie, because "12 Years a Slave" has overshadowed their own movie and will definitely affect the performance at the box office where it matters most, in America and Canada. But fans of Ejiofor may go ahead to see the two films and that will be good news for producers of "Half of a Yellow Sun" who have not done much for the publicity of their film and till date, have not released any official poster for the most expensive Nigerian movie so far. I wish them luck in getting a major distributor if they want to benefit from the popular demand for Chiwetel Ejiofor at the box office.

In fact "12 Years of a Slave" also premiered at the 38th Toronto International Film Festival as "Half of a Yellow Sun" was the one that stunned Toronto and made headlines with rave reviews by top film critics at the film festival.

"12 Years A Slave is the must-see movie of the year, and should win all the Oscars."
~ Adam B. Vary, BuzzFeed's Senior Film Reporter..

"Suspend the betting, close the books, and notify the engraver: I've just seen what will surely be this year's Best Picture winner, and it's '12 Years a Slave.'
~ Kyle Buchanan, Vulture Movies Editor.

"If I never get to participate in a film again, this is it for me."
~ Brad Pitt, co-actor and co-producer of "12 Years a Slave" at the premiere in Toronto last Friday, September 6, 2013.

"12 Years a Slave" will be released  next month on October 18 and as clearly confirmed, is definitely one of the must see movies of the year.

Ster-Kinekor To Bring The First Commercial Multiplex IMAX® Theatre To South Africa

Ster-Kinekor Theatres, the largest cinema exhibitor in South Africa, with 438 screens and 63,000 seats spread across 54 sites.

The cheering news of the return of IMAX to South Africa is already making headlines in the news and social media channels since the IMAX theaters at the Menlyn Park in Pretoria and Gateway Theatre of Shopping in Durban closed over three years ago on Wednesday, 30 June, 2010. The Hyde Park IMAX in Johannesburg closed in 2003 and Cape Victoria & Alfred Waterfront IMAX in Cape Town shut down in 2004. And one person I know who will be really happy to see the return of IMAX is Pfangirl of Durban, Natal, South Africa, because she almost wept when she reported the closure of the previous IMAX theaters in South Africa.

Nelson Mandela Statue To Be Unveiled In Nation's Capital

5 September 2013, 16:39. Africa/Lagos.

Nelson Mandela Statue To Be Unveiled In Nation's Capital

WASHINGTON, Sept. 5, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is being released by Brand South Africa: A statue of former South African President Nelson Mandela is to be unveiled on September 21 at the spot where thousands of Americans from all walks of life symbolically surrendered their liberty to demand Mr Mandela's release from prison and the freedom of millions of South Africans from the bonds of apartheid.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130905/DC74789)

The 9-foot statue by Cape Town sculptor Jean Doyle will stand outside South Africa's newly renovated embassy on Massachusetts Ave.  The figure is modelled from photographs of the South African statesman striding triumphantly to freedom on February 11, 1990, after 28 years of incarceration.

South Africa's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana Mashabane and former Deputy President Baleka Mbete, now chair of Mr Mandela's African National Congress, will be among the dignitaries flying in for the ceremony.

The US will be represented by senior administration officials, members of Congress and civil rights leaders, including the four whose sit-in and arrest at the embassy on November 21, 1984, marked the birth of the Free South Africa Movement.

They were Randall Robinson, founder of TransAfrica, Mary Frances Berry, former chair of the US Civil Right Commission, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and her predecessor as DC delegate, Rev. Walter Fauntroy.

They will be joined by Mark Cutifani, the new CEO of Anglo-American Corp., the South African mining group,  and David Constable, CEO of South African's synthetic fuels and chemicals giant Sasol which recently announced one of the largest direct investments in the US ever by a foreign company.

In addition to Anglo and Sasol, donors include Old Mutual, Wal-Mart,  MTN, Skadden Arps,  the Coca-Cola Company, Black and Veatch,  Solar Reserve, Standard Bank and Stanley and Bea Tollman.
South African Airways, the national carrier, has also contributed generously to the project and is transporting the half ton bronze plated statue to Washington at no charge.

Almost every day from Thanksgiving 1983 through the following year, a cross-section of American society, from congressional leaders and celebrities  like Stevie Wonder to mothers pushing strollers, gathered at the South African embassy and peaceably had themselves arrested for trespass.

The campaign built momentum toward passage of the  1986 Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act (CAAA), a bipartisan measure adopted over President Reagan's veto (as retold in the current hit film, The Butler)  to put pressure on Pretoria to release Mr Mandela and other political prisoners and begin negotiations for a new non-racial democratic order.

Skadden Arps partner and former White House chief counsel Greg Craig, who as foreign policy adviser to the late Senator Edward Kennedy played a significant role in crafting the CAAA, supported the statue project with legal services.

A plaque at the base of the statue quotes from Mr Mandela's address to a joint session of Congress months after his release in 1990:
"The stand you took established…that here we have friends…fighters against racism who feel hurt because we are hurt, who seek our success because they too seek the victory of democracy over tyranny. I speak…of the millions of people throughout this great land who stood up and engaged the apartheid system in struggle. Let us keep our arms locked together so that we form a solid phalanx against racism…Let us ensure that justice triumphs without delay."

"We like to think this statue completes a golden triangle of monuments to leaders – Mahatma Ghandi,  Dr Martin Luther King and now Nelson Mandela –  who have shown by their examples that while the arm of the universe is long, it does not only tend towards justice of its own accord, it can be hastened in that direction peacefully by inspired leadership,"  South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool said.
The statue, a copy of one that stands outside the Drakenstein Correctional Facility, where Mr Mandela spent his final years in prison,  faces onto Massachusetts Avenue, an artery that takes much of Washington's elite to its offices downtown.

"Decisions that affect the world are made by men and women – including the US Vice President -- who pass this way every day on their way to and from work.  We hope they may draw inspiration from this reminder of a great South African," said Simon Barber, US Country Manager for Brand SA.

Across the road is a statue of Winston Churchill, placed in front of the British ambassador's residence in 1966 by the English Speaking Union, with right hand raised in the trademark Churchill V-for-victory. Mr Mandela's right hand is raised in the fist of a power salute.
"As you know," said Ambassador Rasool with a grin, "rock beats scissors".

AKA Ikenga Salutes President Goodluck Jonathan and Princess Stella Oduah on Enugu International Airport

Travelers boarding Ethiopian Airlines plane at the Enugu International Airport.

AKA IKENGA SALUTES PRESIDENT JONATHAN AND PRINCESS STELLA ODUAH ON THE COMMENCEMENT OF INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS TO ENUGU AIRPORT

On Sunday 25th August, ‘Aka Ikenga’, the Think Tank Group of Igbo patriots, with operational bases in Surulere Lagos, resolved on their meeting, to give 100% Igbo salute to the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, for the fulfillment of his electoral promise with the upgrading to international standard of the Akanu-Ibiam airport Enugu and the commencement of international flights to the airport.

President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria.

Aviation Minister, Princess Stella Adaeze Oduah.
The tremendous joy that the airport has generated among the people of Eastern Nigeria, shows that the president recognized the fact that the people of the south east zone badly needed an outlet to the world and the approval of international flight to the Enugu airport marks him out as a president that is genuinely interested in promoting development and keeping the country together.  The tremendous positive economic impact that the international airport will engender towards unity and prosperity of Nigeria, has proven that President Jonathan is a doer, not a talker! Now Igbo people abroad do not have to do another six hours on the road to get home, after flying eleven to sixteen hours to come into the country.

Chief Barrister Goddy Uwazuruike, President of AKA Ikenga.

In a media release signed by his President, Chief Goddy Uwazuruike, Aka Ikenga also salutes the vibrant, energetic and super-achieving aviation minister, Princes Stella Oduah, for recording this milestone achievement, making the dream of Igbo people to come true. The group also salutes all the members of the National Assembly, led by deputy senate president, senator Ike Ekweremadu, who dedicated their constituency projects to the airport and indeed all who saw to the completion of the airport, to the satisfaction of an enduring call from the people of the South East who have for many years clamoured for an international airport for the zone, which they believe will reinforce the resourcefulness of the people who are known for their entrepreneurship and trade.

Henceforth, businessmen and other travelers from Enugu, Aba, Abakaliki, Onistha, Owerri, Umuahia, and as far as Asaba and Benin, will be saved the distress of travelling hours to Lagos and Abuja to board international flights, with the inherent dangers on the road, as they fight for time to catch their flights to international destinations.

Aka Ikenga unanimously resolved that President Jonathan and his team have fulfilled their promise of giving every part of the country equal opportunity to develop and realize its dreams. The group particularly commends the aviation minister for her determination in actualizing the aviation master plan, which the Jonathan administration has prioritized in its transformation agenda, with the objective of giving every part of the country and every citizen, the opportunity to grow to his full potential.

Malala Calls for Peace and Development in Nigeria, Syria and Somalia

The following are the awesome words of Malala Yousafzai as she declared open a new library in Birmingham, the largest in Europe. She was flown to the central English city for surgery last October after being shot by a gunman as she travelled to school in Pakistan’s northwestern Swat region.

"Pens and books are the weapons that will defeat terrorism."

"There is no greater weapon than knowledge and no greater source of knowledge than the written word."

"We must not forget that 57 million children are out of school."

"We must speak up for peace and development in Nigeria, Syria and Somalia."

"We must speak up for the children of Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, who are suffering from terrorism, poverty, child labour and child trafficking."

"Let us help them through our voice, action and charity."

"Let us help them to read books and go to school."

"And let us not forget that even one book, one pen, one child and one teacher can change the world." .
