BRICS Gathered in Geneva To Discuss a New Digital Order |
Experts and antitrust officials met in Geneva to propose solutions to the challenges faced by antitrust authorities in the digital markets of the BRICS countries to find common ground between them, especially in the area of regulation of digital platforms and AI |
GENEVA, Switzerland, June 10, 2024/ -- The UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Webinar on Competition law and policy approaches towards digital platforms and ecosystems in cooperation with the BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre (https://www.BRICSCompetition. The digitalization of the economy - legislature, trade, customs, logistics, etc. - is just entering its most active stage of development, itself a preparatory stage for the automation of the economy. One of the most pressing issues now, at the initial stage of digitalization, is still the streamlining and creation of a regulatory framework for future global processes. This includes the issue of antitrust regulation, both within individual countries and various interstate associations, such as the EU or BRICS. "Today, the actions of antitrust agencies in different countries remain disparate and fragmented. Lack of consensus leads to weakened enforcement, and ecosystems increase anti-competitive pressure on the market. Antitrust law is on the verge of losing its relevance and strength in the digital economy. We need some form of international agreement on the regulation of digital ecosystems, especially given the development of AI technologies,” emphasized Alexey Ivanov, Director of the BRICS Competition Law and Policy Center. As the expert explained, each BRICS jurisdiction has its own objectives with regard to competition law. There is a common core, which has been defined as consumer welfare, efficient allocation of resources and economic freedom. But so far, one of the bottlenecks in dealing with digital markets is market definition - the application of traditional market definition tools is challenged by the tendency of digital markets to be highly innovative and dynamic. The development of new definitions and indicators is one of the most important tasks of the meeting. As part of the presentation, Victor Oliveira Fernandes, Commissioner of CADE, stated that within their organization a number of new indicators have already been developed to define the platform market: for example, the ability to unilaterally impose conditions, including as a show of bargaining power, ownership of key datasets, ability to influence choice through online platform architecture, lack of transparency. Since this year, the number of BRICS member countries has grown, and further expansion is being discussed. Moreover, the association, which remained formal for a long time, is beginning to work more actively. The more active the more real contradictions and problems. Nevertheless, experts noted that there is a significant convergence among BRICS jurisdictions in recognizing the importance of certain essential standards, such as consumer welfare standards, but there are also some differences that are worth highlighting. Authorities in different countries, especially Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa, recognize other objectives, such as ensuring economic freedom or a level playing field for small and medium-sized enterprises. And these goals can somehow be translated into more elaborate legal standards for assessing abuse of dominance. Alexey Ivanov also focused the participants' attention on the fact that cooperation exactly within the framework of supranational associations can give real results in the fight against violations of fair competition rules by global monopolists in local markets. "Much more opportunities for developing countries lie in the area of cooperation. BRICS, as you know, is expanding and working in the area of developing joint enforcement actions, remedies, investigations, case reviews, because this is how you essentially balance the playing field in the fight against global companies,” Ivanov explained. The meeting was attended by a wide pool of international experts and representatives of national and international competition authorities: Victor Oliveira Fernandes, Commissioner, CADE; Rajinder Punja, Economic Director, CCI/ Representative from SAMR (tbc); Masako Wakui, Professor of Law, Kyoto University; Maria Ioannidou, Professor, Queen Mary University of London; Deni Mantzari, Associate Professor, University College of London; Alexey Ivanov, Director, BRICS Competition Law and Policy Center. The experts agreed to continue working on the creation of a harmonized system of supranational instruments of antitrust regulation. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre. About BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre:The BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre was established in 2018 by the BRICS competition authorities. The Centre’s work is aimed at collecting and analyzing information from competition agencies, identifying best practices, but primarily at preparing recommendations and developing approaches to competition policy that reflect the interests of the development of the BRICS economies. The key mission of the BRICS Competition Centre is to advance the development agenda and strengthen the role of competition regulation in overcoming imbalances in the global economy. The Centre brings together leading international universities and independent researchers who are actively involved in the Centre’s main research projects: on global food chains, on sustainability policy and on new approaches to antitrust regulation of the digital economy. SOYINKA and the Quest for the Ori Olokun
SOYINKA and the Quest for the Ori Olokun
The first African Nobel Laureate in Literature Prof. Wole Soyinka is 80 years old today, born on July 13, 1934. And the enigmatic and phenomenal genius is famous for his dare devil exploits including the one that landed him in jail.
In 1965, he seized the Western Nigeria Broadcasting Service studio and broadcast a demand for the cancellation of the Western Nigeria Regional Elections. In 1967 during the Nigerian Civil War, he was arrested by the federal government of General Yakubu Gowon and put in solitary confinement for two years after he secretly and unofficially met with the military governor Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in the Southeastern town of Enugu (August 1967), to try to avert civil war. Go and read his "The Man Died" for his prison notes.
In 1978, Wole Soyinka was made aware of the existence of a bronze head in a private collection in Brazil – similar to the disputed one discovered by the famous German archaeologist Leo Frobenius (29 June 1873 – 9 August 1938) in 1910, which now stood in the Ife Museum, but of far greater quality. In his memoir "You Must Set Forth at Dawn" (2007), Soyinka recalls how, in a spirit of cultural duty, and with the knowledge of the Nigerian authorities, he mounted a kind of guerrilla raid with a group of friends, stealing the object from the apartment in question in near-farcical circumstances, and removing it to the Senegalese capital Dakar, where experts proclaimed it genuine. Suspicious, however, of the lightness of the object, Soyinka examined it further to find the letters “BM” stamped on the back: it was a British Museum replica, once sold in the museum’s shop. Soyinka then declared the British Museum’s head to be the real 'Ori Olokun", even though it was excavated 18 years after Frobenius’s original discovery.

'Big Game' Half Time Show Will Tell
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 4, 2011
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- He's worn it on Oprah, on stage with Tom Cruise, at concerts from London to Brazil, at L.A. Laker games, and in US Magazine, but that's the question Escama Studio, a small cooperative design studio based in San Francisco and Brazil wants to know. Will Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas wear their bag made from 100% recycled pull tabs and intricate crochet when he performs at Sunday's "Big Game" Half Time Show?
(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110204/SF42238)
Will.i.am personally owns five of these handmade bags, but it would mean so much to this small company, with no advertising budget to speak of, for Will.i.am to wear his bag in front of millions. It would validate their mission to create a line of high style, sustainable bags and accessories while improving the lives of the women who make them.
In Brazil, the studio works with more than 100 women from three different cooperatives. This gives the artisans the means to support themselves and their families. Escama Studio donates a percentage of annual sales towards computer-based educational programs, along with computers, furniture, training, and assistance opening bank accounts. Escama Studio is a member of the Fair Trade Federation and has always paid fair wages.
At first glance it's not clear what the bags are made of. Upon closer inspection it becomes clear that they are works of real ingenuity, wearable works of art. Its Leda Bag is the winner of the 2010 Independent Handbag Design Award for "Best Green Handbag".
Escama Studio bags and accessories are now sold in 15 countries and notable locations including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Sydney Opera House and the Royal Academy of Art, London.

Brazil Emerges as Clear World Cup Favourite in New Mindshare Survey
World Cup 2010 Mindreader
Who will be watching?
Who will people be supporting?
Who will be in the Final?
LONDON, 9th June/PRNewswire/ — When it comes to the World Cup 2010, Brazil is by far the favourite team of digitally-savvy soccer fans around the world, according to a new study.
More than 40 percent of all fans analysed said they plan to root for Brazil in the upcoming tournament, scheduled to begin June 11 in host country South Africa. The next highest team was Argentina with 30 percent of respondents offering their support. So, while Spain are the bookies’ favourite to lift the trophy on July 11th, Brazil are the popular favourite around the world.
In contrast, seven nations were tied for dead last with only 1 percent of respondents claiming support. They were Slovakia, Algeria, Slovenia, Honduras, Serbia, South Korea, and North Korea.
The results were revealed in a new online survey conducted by media and marketing services agency Mindshare as part of its "Mindreader" series. The new study covers 29 markets with a representative sample of 29,000 internet users.
"Mindreader is a really powerful way of looking at what is important to people across the globe." said Mindshare’s Marco Rimini. "The World Cup is the most popular event in the sporting calendar. Mindreader helps us understand what it means to consumers."
Only four nations included in the analysis did not have teams set to play in the tournament, and each said they will support the Brazilians more than any other team. These included India, with 69 percent of the respondents indicating their support for Brazil; Singapore (65%); Poland (53%); and Canada (47%).
Additionally, Brazil easily came in second behind the home team among a wide majority of nations with tournament representation. These included France (37%), Germany (22%), Italy (36%), South Africa (53%), Spain (41%), the U.K. (29%), and the U.S.A. (33%).
Not only was the Brazil the overwhelming fan favourite of the 32 national teams scheduled to play in the quadrennial event, but it was also favoured more than any other team to play in the final. Fifty-seven percent of the respondents picked Brazil for the final contest while 28 percent chose Spain and 27 percent picked Argentina.
The survey also revealed the following:
Overall levels of interest in following the World Cup ranged widely from 92 percent of respondents in Argentina indicating they planned to follow at least some of the tournament to 23 percent in the U.S.A.
Twelve percent of all respondents said they would root for the host country, South Africa, in the tournament. Other levels of support ranged from Spain (29 percent; England (26 percent); and Germany (25 percent) on the high end, to Denmark, Paraguay and Japan with 2 percent each on the lower end.
Fans in a handful of nations had the confidence to predict that their home team will make it all the way to the final match. They included Argentina, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.S.A. The team each group predicted as their opponent? Who else—Brazil.

Brazil's GDP Down 0.2% in 2009, Demonstrating Resilience Amidst Global Economic Crisis
Brazil's GDP Down 0.2% in 2009, Demonstrating Resilience Amidst Global Economic Crisis
Fourth quarter growth in consumption and investments supported growth, says Finance Minister Mantega
BRASILIA, Brazil, March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Federative Republic of Brazil announced today that its economy saw only a moderate decline amid the global recession in 2009, with a 0.2 percent decrease in annual real gross domestic product -- the output of goods and services adjusted for inflation -- to R$ 3.14 trillion (at current values), equivalent to US$ 1.58 trillion. In the fourth quarter of 2009, real GDP rose 2 percent (seasonally adjusted) over the third quarter of 2009, according to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
"Both our fourth quarter and full year GDP performance show that Brazil, despite the difficult economic environment throughout 2009, successfully recovered from the global financial crisis. Through our sound macroeconomic steering, we feel we have demonstrated our resilience and weathered the storm better than most," said Finance Minister Guido Mantega. "We are already seeing strong indications of economic growth for the year ahead and expect at least 5 percent growth in 2010."
2009 Annual Performance Supported by Services Sector
Brazil's 0.2 percent decrease in annual GDP in 2009 was primarily a result of the performance of the services sector, which grew 2.6 percent, offsetting the performance of the agriculture and industry sectors, which declined 5.2 percent and 5.5 percent, respectively. The economy was also supported by stable domestic demand, with household consumption growing 4.1 percent and a 3.7 percent increase in public administration consumption.
Q4 2009 Performance Buoyed by Investment and Domestic Consumption
The expansion in real GDP for the fourth quarter of 2009 in the seasonally adjusted series represents a 2 percent increase compared to the third quarter of 2009. Highlights of Q4 performance included 4.0 percent growth in the industrial sector, 0.6 percent growth in the services sector, and a stable 0.0 percent change in agricultural output. Regarding domestic demand, gross fixed capital formation recorded a growth of 6.6 percent, household consumption grew 1.9 percent and public administration consumption increased by 0.6 percent. These outcomes point to the recovery of private investments and increased consumption.

Two of the world's most passionate footballing nations, Spain and Brazil, are favourites to go head to head in the 2010 FIFA World Cup(TM) Final according to the Castrol Predictor, a new tool launched today by 2010 FIFA World Cup(TM) sponsor Castrol (http://www.castrolfootball.com).

While the UEFA Euro 2008 winners, Spain, seem to be most bookmakers' favourite going into the tournament, the Castrol Predictor shows that they actually have only a 16.1% chance of glory and are second favourites behind the five time winners Brazil, with a 23.6% chance of success.
Castrol has applied the same expertise they apply to the development of their oils to create the Castrol Predictor, using objective analysis and highly advanced technology to offer unique insights into winning performances.
Castrol's analysis shows that the best placed teams to qualify from Group G, the so called 'Group of Death', are Castrol Predictor tournament and group favourites Brazil (91.7%) and Portugal (52.4%). Carlos Queiroz's men cannot afford to be complacent as they are almost inseparable from their group rivals and African favourites Ivory Coast, who have a 50.5% chance of reaching the last 16.
Current world champions Italy, will have their work cut out to mirror their triumph of 2006, with the Azzurri ranked 7th favourites to reclaim their crown and given only a 3.6% chance of victory. One Italian that is in contention to lift the famous trophy is England manager Fabio Capello, who will look to guide his team to their first World Cup Final since 1966. England are third favourites to go all the way, with the Castrol Predictor giving them a 10.4% chance of success, however, Capello's men will be weary of penalty shoot-out heartbreak, given their poor record when it comes to spot-kicks.
The Castrol Predictor has been created by the same team of Castrol Performance Analysts behind the Castrol Rankings and Castrol Index.
It measures past team and player performance and works out the attack and defence ratings of each nation. Then, by simulating the tournament more than 100,000 times and taking into account the draw groupings, Castrol has calculated each team's chances of progression through the FIFA World Cup(TM) group stages and ultimately, of winning the world's most famous trophy.
The Castrol Predictor will be updated throughout the 2010 FIFA World Cup(TM) on http://castrolfootball.com, so fans can see the impact of each and every match result on their team's chances.
The Castrol Predictor is fully interactive, letting fans find out how they will get on in their group, which teams they are most and least likely to meet at each round, and whether they'll face a grudge match with arch rivals.
Castrol Ambassador Marcel Desailly says: "I am surprised that the Castrol Predictor shows Brazil as favourites because I really thought Spain were the team to beat this time. I will be hoping that my home nation Ghana does better than predicted as the Castrol Predictor only gives them a 0.2% chance of success! It's great being able to look at the teams' predicted success in this way and I'm sure it will be a talking point for football fans everywhere."
Castrol Senior Vice-President Mike Johnson added: "We want to offer real insight to football fans around the world and the Castrol Predictor does exactly that, offering fans a new and meaningful way of following their team through the 2010 FIFA World Cup(TM). As passionate football fans we are looking forward with great excitement to using the Castrol Predictor throughout the tournament next year."

Robbed, Threatened and Murdered : The Top 5 Most Dangerous Holiday Destinations
Robbed, Threatened and Murdered : The Top 5 Most Dangerous Holiday Destinations
UTRECHT, The Netherlands, September 17/PRNewswire/ -- All holiday goers want to enjoy a carefree time. Sadly, too often holiday goers get caught up in unsafe and unpleasant situations. The holiday review website Zoover has compiled a list of holiday destinations that are best avoided if you want to enjoy a carefree and much earned vacation.
1) Durban, South Africa
In South Africa some cities are unable to guarantee your safety. Especially the harbor city of Durban is notorious as far as personal safety goes. A. Dijkhzuizen has the following warning: 'Be careful, don't just get into a taxi. You could get ambushed, robbed etc. Taxi chauffeurs are regularly murdered, especially those driving busses or vans'.
2) Rio de Janeiro, Brasil
This South American metropolis is known for its criminal activity and corruption . The reason Jeroen van den Bos won't return to Rio de Janeiro, in his words, is: 'At first glance it appears to be a beautiful city but in reality it's polluted and we were robbed at gunpoint of our money, sunglasses and sports shoes in the Ipanema suburb. The police did not make us feel any better or safer'.
3) Nairobi, Kenya
The capital of Kenya displays a large discrepancy between the wealthy and poor. Bert has the following to say: 'Kenya and the capital Nairobi are beautiful but terribly criminal. Make sure that you take a taxi at night or are escorted at night because 'going out' without such safety precautions is foolish'.
4) Playa el Agua, Isla Margarita
This popular coastal destination is becoming increasingly unsafe. 'Very dangerous, we could not even leave our compound. Several people were robbed, and I mean with a gun to their head', according to Wendy who spent her holiday there.
5) Caracas, Venezuela
In the capital city of Venezuela, poverty is sadly the cause of much criminal activity. Tonny Oosterwaal experienced this first hand: 'I was robbed at gunpoint which caused my wife to faint', he told Zoover.
