12th Annual iREP Documentary Film Festival Opens with "President" in Lagos

12th Annual iREP Documentary Film Festival Opens with "President" in Lagos

The 12th annual iREPRESENT International Documentary Film Festival opened today in Lagos, Africa's largest megacity with more than 80 films from over 28 countries.
The festival runs from March 17 - 20, 2022 at different locations, including the traditional venue, Freedom Park on Broad Street, Terra Kulture on Victoria Island and the Art Factory Hall of the Crown Troupe of Africa in Bariga on the mainland of Lagos city.

The festival opened with "President", a 2021 documentary film by Camilla Nielsson on the state of democracy, in Zimbabwe, showing behind-the-scenes at the 2018 election that followed the ousting of President Robert Mugabe and the closing film is "Garderie Nocturne - Night Nursery" directed by Moumouni Sanou. The film won the Best Documentary film grand prize at the 2021 Pan African Film Festival, FESPACO in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The 2022 iREP Festival continues with it's conceptual framework of "Africa in Self-Conversation", exploring the theme ‘UNFILTERED: African Stories. Stories from Africa; to examine “how Africa is being represented or otherwise by filmmakers and storytellers who engage her issues.”

"More satisfying is the fact that many African anglophone and francophone filmmakers converge annually at iREP to attend our Producers Roundtable events. We create the perfect opportunity for collaborations and co-productions through various networking events,” said Femi Odugbemi, Cofounder and Executive Director of iREP.

The Best Nigerian Female Filmmakers and the NOLLYWOOD MIRROR®Series

The Best Nigerian Female Filmmakers and the NOLLYWOOD MIRROR®Series.

Researching for and profiling the best Nigerian female filmmakers for the third edition of the NOLLYWOOD MIRROR®Series have been more tasking than selecting the best Nigerian filmmakers. I started with 10 accomplished Nigerian female filmmakers in Nigeria and the Diaspora and now I have 33 notable ones.

The publication of the NOLLYWOOD MIRROR®Series has been totally financed by me and the 10 complimentary copies of the second edition I gave out gratis cost me US$300, because I am the Publisher and Editor. But the international distributors sell a copy from US$40- US$70. The first edition with the young accomplished award winning filmmaker, Kenneth Gyang on the cover sells from US$40 to over US$900 on Amazon. Book traders have made it a collector's item.

The third edition has more features and photographs, including rare photographs of the great Nigerian novelist, Chinua Achebe on the location of the making of the film adaptation of two of his novels, "Things Fall Apart" and "No Longer at Ease" as "Bullfrog in the Sun" directed by German filmmaker, Jason Hansjürgen Pohland and produced by Francis Oladele, the "Father of Nigerian Cinema".  Other features include the highest grossing Nollywood movies so far, the world premiere of Femi Odugbemi's "Gidi Blues", one of the best romantic dramas in Nigerian movies; the making of "Lagos in Motion" romantic documentary; profiles of some of the top Nigerian actors and actresses; Sam Zebba's"Fincho" (1957), the first film to be made in colour in Nigeria; Adamu Halilu, the first filmmaker to have made a film in Hausa and his other films; including "Baban Larai" (1954), "It Pays to Care" (1955), "Hausa Village" (1958), "Mama Learn a Lesson" (1963), "Child bride" (1971) and "Shehu Umar" (1979); 2019 Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) and 2019 Nigerian International Film Summit (NIFS).

This is going to be a highly priced collector's item and if book traders sell a copy for more than US$1000, I will not be surprised.

Publishing such an important publication on contemporary art of filmmaking in a society where the majority of the people are intellectually challenged has been a herculean task, because many of the Nigerian filmmakers in Nigeria don't even know the importance and significance of the literature of motion picture and the appreciation of literary culture. Philistinism is widespread among majority of people in Nigeria. But I have to continue documenting and publishing the history of Nollywood and the Nigerian film industry for the benefit of Nigeria and the rest of the world.

2nd Eko International Film Festival opens in Lagos

The 2nd Eko International Film Festival (EKOIFF) opened Saturday morning in Lagos with the Nigerian premiere of Faruk Lasaki's romantic thriller Changing Faces at the Silverbird Galleria on Victoria Island. The feature of 92 minutes is on the psychological trauma of an illicit affair caused by the transference of spirits through sex.

Many people came for the opening day graced by top Nigerian entertainment journalists including Shaibu Husseini of The Guardian who was later joined by his boss Jahman Anikulapo, the Editor of The Guardian on Sunday, Victor Akande of The Nation, Wale Idowu Shadrach, the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Movietainment, the leading magazine on Nollywood and other sectors of the Nigerian entertainment industry; and notable stakeholders present were Femi Odugbemi, the multiple award winning Nigerian filmmaker and head of DVWORX, who is also the Founder/Festival director the iRepresent International Documentary Film Festival, Mrs. Duro Oni representing the Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC), famous Nollywood director Fidelis Duker who is the Founder/Festival Director of Abuja International Film Festival, Alex Onyogho, President of the Association of Nollywood Core Producers (ANCOP), Mrs. Busola Solanke, Chikezie Nkemdirim Donatus of Independent Field Advertisers Limited, Chris Nwankpa, the CEO of Fintel and an executive producer of the action movie Dangerous Men accompanied by the leading actress Onyekachi Anyajike with Kiki Deo, international award winning filmmaker Chike Ibekwe, and Bic Leu, a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Lagos, author of Finding Nollywood, who is in Nigeria to analyze Nollywood’s social impact through the Social Return on Investment (SROI). She has been liaising with Professor Duro Oni, Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Lagos, who has agreed to support and supervise her project and having access to Professor Oni’s ongoing project with the Open University in the United Kingdom to build a multimedia archive of all Nollywood films and related literary materials.

Faruk Lasaki spoke on the making of Changing Faces after the screening. The film critics praised the exceptional quality of his movie which they rated above the other movies in Nollywood. They wanted the movie to be shown at the various cinemas in Nigeria.

Hope Obioma Opara, President of the film festival and the Founder/Festival Director Ekenyerengozi Michael Chima were happy with the impressive turn out and agreed that with more sponsors the EKOIFF will attract more international filmmakers and tourists to Lagos for the benefit of the Nigerian film industry and boost tourism.

The five days film festival continues tomorrow Sunday with the African premiere of Emmanuel Itier's multiple award winning spiritual documenatary "The Invocation" narrated by Sharon Stone, the famous Hollywood actress of the Basic Instinct fame.

Taking Nollywood to the next level

The most famous Nollywood star Genevieve Nnaji

Taking Nollywood to the next level

Recently stakeholders in the Nigerian film industry met at the last quarterly stampede of the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA) to discuss “The New Trend in Nollywood”. The event was held on Sunday May 22, 2011, at the Freedom Park on Broad Street, Lagos. The forum was convened by CORA and Mr. Femi Odugbemi’s iRepresent International Documentary Film Festival (iREP).

It was well coordinated and well attended by most of the notable personalities in Nollywood and related fields. Celebrated actors Richard Mofe-Damijo, Joke Silva-Jacobs, Francis Onwochei and other Nollywood stars sat quietly without any sort of fanfare or glamour in the audience.

The invited filmmakers identified as leaders of the new trend had an interactive session on their movies. Mahmood Ali-Balogun discussed his matrimonial drama “Tango With Me”, Kunle Afolayan spoke on his horror thriller “The Figurine 'araromire'”, Stephanie Okerereke on her romantic comedy “Through the Glass”, Chidi Nwokobia on his family drama “Champions Of Our Time”, Emem Isong said she is excited about the successes she has made screening her videos in cinemas, Lilian Amah-Aluko had more to address than her “Jungle Ride”, Vivian Ejike talked about the challenges of making her “Private Storm”, appreciating the local talents and professionals she found worthy in making good movies, but Chineze Anyaene was absent and the young man Kelechi Ikata she sent to represent her could not say much on her outstanding thriller “IJE - The Journey”.

The filmmakers, journalists and other contributors had a common resolution that with the provision of adequate resources by all the stakeholders and a conducive environment the Nigerian film industry will make more impact in the world.

The moderator was the notable film critic and journalist Steve Ayorinde who is now the Managing Editor of The National Mirror Newspaper. The coordinators Shaibu Husseini and his senior colleague Jahman Anikulapo, Editor of The Guardian on Sunday Nespaper and Programme Chairman of CORA deserve commendation for making sure that the event went well and recognizing the presence of Mr. Hope Obioma Opara, the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Supple magazine and President of Eko International Film Festival and Chike Ibekwe whose movie “Eternal” was a co-winner of the Golden Screen Best Film award with “An Unusual Woman” by Burkinabe director Abdoulaye Dao at the 14th annual Ecrans noirs Film Festival in Yaounde, Cameroon, last year. And thanks to Toyin Akinosho, Secretary-General of CORA and Femi Odugbemi and their organizing committee for hosting the laudable forum.

Femi Odugbemi’s Bariga Boy Wins AfroPop Prize for Best film

Femi Odugbemi

Femi Odugbemi’s Bariga Boy Wins AfroPop Prize for Best film

Femi Odugbemi’s short documentary Bariga Boy has won another international award at the 5th Real-Life Documentary Film Festival (May 18th to 25th /Screening May 21st to 25th) in Accra, Ghana. Last Wednesday, it was awarded the AfroPop Prize for Best film. In April, Bariga Boy was given the award for the Best Documentary at the AMAA 2010 in Bayelsa state, Nigeria.

The AfroPop Prize of the Real Life Documentary Festival is sponsored by the National Black Programming Consortium, in the United States. The prize is connected to the US-based public television show featuring independent documentaries and short films about life art and culture from the contemporary African Diaspora.

“For Africa to catch up with the world infrastructurally, politically and economically, artistes of all shades must stand up to be counted. Our talent must speak out to challenge power and inspire change,” Odugbemi said while receiving the prize.

“I am very happy that Femi Odugbemi got the AfroPop Prize. He did a beautiful work and I really enjoyed the way he portrayed a young gifted Nigerian artiste and its neighborhood. The awards are for me very important because it is a great opportunity for the festival to give recognition to contemporary African visual productions,” said Lydie Diakhate, Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Real Life Festival.
