BEIJING, China, October 6, 2023/ -- Amidst the 10th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China Media Group (CMG) and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China jointly produced The Beauty of Shared Arts, a grand TV program focusing on international cultural exchanges, to showcase the charm of diverse cultures and promote their exchanges. Themed around the Cultural Silk Road, this program welcomes guests from BRI members and offers a panoramic view of cultural interplay, open collaboration, and interaction among diverse cultures through the BRI. Featuring artists in China and beyond, The Beauty of Shared Arts presents viewers with refreshing contents, including singing, dancing, theatrical performances, and acrobatics to showcase the profound fusion of different cultures, as the BRI builds a modern Silk Road for the shared benefit of countries around the world. The program premiered on October 5 at about 8:00 PM on CCTV-1 (https://www.CCTV.com/) and was simultaneously broadcast on online media platforms such as Yangshipin.cn and CCTV.com.

With concerted efforts from member countries, the BRI has yielded fruitful results over the past decade, as it has promoted public well-being and fostered cultural dialogues among BRI members. Following the initiative’s footsteps, The Beauty of Shared Arts shot VCRs and held interviews around the world to fully capture the BRI’s vision: We advocate respect for the diversity of civilizations, the common values of humanity, the importance of inheritance and innovation of civilizations, and robust international people-to-people exchanges and cooperation.

In one episode, the program introduced viewers to the touching mentorship between Chinese train conductor Dai Rui and her Laotian counterpart Tong Kangmi on the China-Laos railway. During the episode, the two conductors sang One Belt One Road, together with Laotian singer Atisal Ratana and Hong Kong actor/singer WONG Cho-lam. The BRI has not only connected economies but also created closer ties between people from different nations. Upcoming episodes of the program will also feature guests from African BRI members. Through the program, viewers feel the emotional side of the BRI, as they witness the similarities, mutual understanding, and friendship between different cultures.

From the story of joint BRI contribution to the artistic performances on stage, The Beauty of Shared Arts transcends national boundaries to present direct dialogues between different cultures and arts. For instance, through their shared love for the blue and white porcelain, Director of the Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Institute WANG Yanjun and famous Turkish artist Adil Can Güven struck an immediate connection on the program. Through innovative stage collaboration between the Turkish Fire of Anatolia Dance Troupe and Chinese dancers for the New Blue and White Porcelain, the program vividly illustrated the artistic charm of the distinct yet harmonious cultures of China and Türkiye, generating fresh cultural dynamics through mutual exchange.

The program offers many other highlights: Serbian singer Slobodan Trkulja and Chinese singer SHA Baoliang creatively adapted the classic song Bella Ciao/Goodbye My Friends; celebrated pianist LANG Lang engaged in a musical dialogue with Kazakh singer Dimash Kudaibergen on the same stage. Through the program, touching stories are seamlessly incorporated into various art forms, including music, dance, and visual aesthetics, to create a series of impressive artistic feasts.

The Beauty of Shared Arts, broadcast on CCTV-1, invites all viewers to witness the evolution of the BRI, an epic story of our times.

"Saint Omer" is in the Competition for the Golden Lion at the 79th annual Venice International Film Festival

"Saint Omer" is in the Competition for the  Golden Lion at the 79th annual Venice International Film Festival on 7 September 2022

"Saint Omer" is a 2022 French film directed by Alice Diop, one of the most  outstanding international awards winning African documentary filmmakers. The world premiere is at the on going 79th annual Venice International Film Festival.

The film is starring Kayije Kagame and Guslagie Malanda. Its is Diop's first narrative feature producing multiple award winning documentary films.

In the film, Rama (Kagame) is a pregnant young novelist who attends the trial of Laurence Coly (Malanda), a Senegalese woman accused of murdering her 15-month-old child by leaving her on a beach to be swept away by the tide, in order to turn the tragic event into a literary retelling of Medea.

"Saint Omer" is also in the Official Selections of the 2022 annual Toronto International Film Festival and the 2022 New York Film Festival before the theatrical release in France in November 2022.

     ALICE DIOP,  DIRECTOR, SCREENWRITER,  CINEMATOGRAPHER.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

In June 2016, I attended the trial of a woman who killed her baby daughter by dropping her off at high tide on a beach in France. I imagined that she wanted to offer her to the ‘sea’, a more powerful ‘mother’ than she could be. Inspired by a true story, but fueled by an imagination that summoned mythological figures, I wrote this film: the story of a young novelist who attends the trial of an infanticidal mother with the aim of writing a contemporary version of the Medea myth. But nothing will happen as she had planned. The opacity of the accused will constantly return her to her own ambiguity about motherhood. It is a film that I wanted to make to probe the unspeakable mystery of mothers.

The Story Of The Soul Sisters Premiere set for Lagos

The much awaited Nigerian premiere of Rahman Oladigbolu's award winning film In America: The Story Of The Soul Sisters comes up on Thursday September 8, 2011, at the Genesis Deluxe Cinemas at The Palms in Lekki, Lagos. Popular award winning American actor Jimmy Jean-Louis is Tai Ojo in this movie that has been described as one of the best movies by African filmmakers in the Diaspora. Rahman, a graduate of Quincy College and Harvard University is also the author of On Holy Pilgrimage: A Long Journey for Freedom.

In America: The Story Of The Soul Sisters won the 2011 seventh Edition of the Annual African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) for the Best Film for African Abroad and the Best Emerging Filmmaker's Award at the 2010 Roxbury International Film Festival in Boston, Massachusetts.

"It is a masterpiece that showcases the ignoble sub-culture where illegal immigrants are forced to exist in the US. It chronicles the terrible and dishonorable lifestyle that these individuals live on a daily basis just to survive in the West. Added to this desperation is the incessant plea for financial assistance from families in the homeland. Not since Kafka has someone so aptly captured the depths and essence of Western existentialism and its culture of individualism."

The Story

An African medical student seeking better professional opportunity in the United States finds herself caught up in the American immigration war. With the political heat mounting on illegal immigrants, she's faced only with a dilemma: she either continues to live on the fringes of the society, where there's no hope for her career goal, or give up all hope on the American dream.

A young American puts her life on hold to restore the glory of her parents estranged marriage. After years of painful sacrifice, and amid the storm of her adolescent crises, she has to make a last shot for their reconciliation, or give up forever on her parents as she goes away to college.

What happens when the lives of these two young women cross? The result is a soul-touching friendship that tests the limits of political laws and redefines human dedication.

Rahman in glasses with Jimmy Jean-Louis with 2010 AMAA awards

About the Director:

Rahman was born in Oyo State, Nigeria, into the royal family of the kingdom once known as Oyo Empire. He started his formal education at Alaafia Nursery and Primary school at Ibadan, completed his primary education at Saint Andrews Demonstration, Oyo, and his secondary education at Olivet Baptist High School, also at Oyo. Then he made a decision to come to the United States to study film production. But as a thinker says, events sometimes mock at human foresight, and there is nothing more certain than the unforeseen. A peculiar unforeseen would be Rahman’s lot for the next decade after his decision, and which culminated in his first book, On Holy Pilgrimage: A Long Journey For Freedom. Though Rahman decided to write the book to tell his story, to awaken the world about the depth of the mysteries within which life is cocooned, the book initially served only as a therapeutic avenue for him to keep his sanity while going through one of the worst experiences any human could be subjected to. With his body tortured by a mysterious illness, and his intellect by the conflict of cultures, Western scientific and traditional African cultures, his primary motivation to write the book was his discovery of the concept of reincarnation, a complex reality without which he thinks higher understanding of life might be impossible. Confused in his world, living ‘on the lip of insanity, not knowing the reason he was made to suffer, whether by science or witchcraft or fate, Rahman discovered the human mind, the balcony from which both the inside and outside of the universe could be perceived. Spending seven years on the sick bed, this territory became his only realm of work and! play. It would transform the worldview that Rahman had ever known, and put him on the pedestal to a new height, a new way of life. Rahman now lives in Massachusetts.

African Premiere of The Invocation at 2nd Eko International Film Festival

The African premiere of Emmanuel Itier's multiple award winning movie THE INVOCATION narrated by the famous Hollywood actress Sharon Stone will be at the 2nd Eko International Film Festival (EKOIFF) on Saturday July 9, 2011, at the prestigious Silverbird Galleria, 133 Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos.

THE INVOCATION is a thought provoking film about God and World Peace. An exploration of the notion of the Divine around the world and through Religion, Spirituality, Science, History, Politics and Arts.

It is an invitation to elevate our school of thought and to change the code of human interaction in relation to our perceptions of God. The film proposes answers to universal questions in both a religious and non-religious context: Who am I, where do I come from, and where am I going? Is there something beyond the here and now? What is the global idea of ‘God’ which has presented us with countless conflicts throughout human history? How can we live in Peace?

The project was filmed around the world by a team of talented religious and non-religious filmmakers, and challenges us to go beyond our differences in seeking the common goal of world peace. Without agenda, the film presents a message of global understanding, unity, and humanity. Featuring interviews with respected social and political lime lights, spiritual leaders, artists, entertainers and other influential figures, THE INVOCATION is a truly inspiring source of information that compels you to "be the change you want to see in the world."
