BBC Calls PDP Nigeria's Bad Luck Party?

While the storm within the party was gaining momentum, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, political benefactor of Mr Jonathan and a strong influence within the party, wrote a damning letter last month cataloguing alleged personal shortcomings of the president and his style of governance.
The letter was more devastating than if it had been written by the leader of the main opposition party.
President Jonathan replied, denying all the allegations.
He said that the former president had done him "grave injustice" with the public letter.
He accused Mr Obasanjo of trying to incite the populace against him.

“Start Quote

It is not only raining over President Jonathan, it is like a deluge falling on him”
His supporters within the PDP leadership and his political aides fired a barrage of denunciations against Mr Obasanjo but the resultant controversy has not helped the president.
Yet another political bombshell was delivered by the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
He alleged that nearly $50bn (£30bn) was unaccounted for from crude oil receipts taken by the national petroleum corporation.
Official denials followed shortly afterwards but in the end it was admitted that about $10bn was yet to be accounted for.

UK – Nigeria Sign Compulsory Prisoner Transfer Agreement

LONDON, 10 January 2014 / PRNewswire Africa / - The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the United Kingdom today signed an agreement providing for the transfer of prisoners between the two States.
The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the United Kingdom today signed an agreement providing for the transfer of prisoners between the two States. This Agreement was one of the key objectives of the communiqué issued by President Jonathan and Prime Minister Cameron following their meeting in 2011.
The Agreement will allow Nigerians who commit crimes in the United Kingdom, and Britons who commit crimes in Nigeria, to serve their sentences in their own country, where they can be properly prepared for release into the community in which they will live following their release.

Both the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the United Kingdom have in place prisoner transfer arrangements with a number of other countries. The signature of this Agreement builds on the already close links between the two countries in the criminal justice field. A special joint committee of officials will oversee the implementation of this Agreement. It is expected that the first prisoners will be transferred under this Agreement before the end of 2014.

Jeremy Wright, the British Justice Minister said:
Removing foreign national offenders is a key priority for the British Government and the prisoner transfer agreement I signed this morning with the Nigerian Attorney-General plays a significant role in supporting this. Both the United Kingdom and Nigeria have prisoner transfer arrangements with other countries and it is right that our two countries, which have such strong ties and shared interests, should develop our own arrangements. I strongly believe that this Agreement will have significant benefits for both our countries.

Famous Nigerian Comedian IGoDye Becomes UN Ambassador for Millennium Development Goals

Francis Agoda, popularly known as "Igodye" is now a United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Ambassador. Igodye regarded as one of Africa’s funniest comedians has been given this honor in recognition of his support for the realization of the MDGs in Nigeria.

Well, this Initiative is a Global recognition to individuals who have championed and enhanced through their work the overall development of humanity, based on selfless service, creativity and compassion towards human development. However, this mandate strengthens the desire of the ace comedian Igodye who has been committed to philanthropic gestures, also advocating a non-violence approach to the resolution of conflicts among youths in Africa; inspiring the youths and advocating for good leadership towards the eradication of poverty.

Igodye said:
“I feel honored and it will be more gratifying to me, when I will see that our leaders create opportunities for youths to be gainfully employed. Because as at today, millions of Africans are suffering, and faced with uncertainty. The future seems vague and no hope in sight. Until this personal desire of a better Africa is achieved; my heart knows no happiness; because someone is still sleeping without a meal. But with this recognition, it shows that my work is not in vain. I Thank God for giving me this talent that is inspiring others and also to my fans all over the world who have been supporting me with their prayers and love. Without you, all these achievements won’t have been possible. May God Bless you all."

The United Nations Millennium Development Goals Ambassador came with a customized vehicle plate number: MDG AMB 7K Ambassador, international identification card and an honorary plaque.
Igodye is now among other UN MDGs Ambassadors around the world working to actualize the objectives of the United Nations.

Lancelot Imasuen's World Press Conference on "Invasion 1897" Marks the Centenary of Oba Ovonramwen's Death in 1914

 Lancelot Imasuen directing "Invasion 1897".

Lancelot Imasuen had a world press conference Tuesday evening of January 14, 2014, on his historical epic film "Invasion 1897" and also to mark the Centenary of the death of Omo N’oba Ovonramwen in exile in Calabar on January 14, 1914, which is also the same month of the epoch of modern Nigeria by the amalgamation of the Lagos Colony, Southern and Northern protectorates on Jan 1, 1914.

The press conference held at his ICESLIDES Studios in Surulere, Lagos, attracted notable stakeholders in Nollywood, including his co-producer Famous Otakponmwen, celebrated Nollywood directors Chico Ejiro, Zik Zulu Okafor, the President of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP), Fidelis Duler, Founder/CEO of Abuja International Film Festival, Chinedu Ikedieze, MFR, popularly known as "Aki" in Nollywood movies, Hope Obioma Opara, President of Eko International Film Festival, Cyprian Orakpo, the Managing Director (CEO) of Transerve Disc Technologies Limited and his wife; Shaibu Husseini, Nigeria's leading film critic and Chair of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) College of Screeners, Victor Akande, Group Entertainment Editor at The Nation Newspaper and Benjamin Njoku of the Vanguard Newspaper who anchored the press conference.

The World Press Conference also highlighted the continuity of the cultural heritage of the classic Bronze Art of the Benin Kingdom and historical legacy of the great Benin Empire (1440–1897).
Imasuen answered questions after the screening of clips of the making of "Invasion 1897".
Both Shaibu Husseini and Zik Zulu Okafor commended the courage and faith of the director to make such a challenging historical film and said "Invasion 1897" is more than a story of the sacking of the Benin Kingdom by the colonial British Empire, but the fall of the last African empire. Imasuen said if Benin Kingdom had not fallen, the amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914 would not have happened. And his epic would be a cultural movement for the restoration of the great bronze artworks of Benin and the reparation for the colonial siege and pillage of the Benin Kingdom.
In 1999, the African World Reparations and Repatriation Truth Commission called for "the West" to pay $777 trillion to Africa within five years., but the western powers have ignored the calls for reparations.

The commemorative head is at the British Museum, while the pendant is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA.
When the CNN reported that Lancelot Imasuen was working on a $2 million film called "Invasion 1987" was in 2012 and since then, the production has gulped more millions of dollars.
http://www.cnn.com/2012/08/23/showbiz/nollywood-nigeria-audience-popularity/index.html?iref=allsearch

"Invasion 1897" has an international cast, including famous British actors Rudolph Walker and Charles "Chucky" Venn and the top Nigerian actors include Charles Inojie, Paul Obazele, Segun arinze, Mike Omoriegbe as Oba Ovonrawmen and the late Justus Esiri in a cameo role.

Real Benin bronze artworks have to be made for the film and in fact a complete boat made of bronze was made. Moreover, accommodation and welfare of the cast and crew for weeks and months will gulp a lot of money for a large cast of over 1500 people and the leading local and foreign actors are not going to collect peanuts.

The first major dramatization of the Omo N’oba Ovonramwen was by the great Nigerian playwright, the late Prof. Ola Rotimi, whose epic Ovonramwen Nogbaisi was performed in 1971 and published in 1974 and became a popular study for both pupils of secondary schools and students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria as part of the syllabus for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and academic theses. The second major drama was Prof. Ahmed Yerima's Trials of Oba Ovonramwen which had a grand command performance in 1997, with the presence of the great grandchild of Ovonramwen, Solomon Uku Apolopolo Oba Ereduwa 1 and the British High Commissioner.

Invasion 1897, the Fall of the Last African Empire

"Invasion 1897" is an epic film based on the invasion of the Benin Kingdom by the British Empire in 1897 and looting the priceless ancient artifacts of the Benin kingdom, including the famous commemorative head and pendant of ivory mask representing Queen Idia (from court of Benin, 16th century) who was the mother of Esigie, the Oba of Benin who ruled from 1504 to 1550. The commemorative head is at the British Museum, while the pendant is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA.

Did you know that five years before the death of Omo n’Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi, the British Consul-General Moor, who captured, deposed and sent him on exile in Calabar committed suicide in Barnes, Middlesex in 1909. The great Ovonramwen must have cursed him for no one commits such a great sacrilege and escapes the wrath of the Benin Kingdom.

The film has been endorsed by the Benin monarch, Oba Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolopolo Erediauwa 1, who also honoured Lancelot Imasuen with the 2013 Oba Erediauwa Excellence Award.
The world premiere of "Invasion 1897" will take place on October 1, 2014..

Lancelot Imasuen's father receiving the 2013 Oba Erediauwa Excellence Award on behalf of his illustrious son at the royal ceremony in the Oba's Palace on Saturday, December 28, 2013.

Lancelot Imasuen appreciates the support of Senator Daisy Danjuma, South Atlantic Petroleum Limited and Capt (Dr.) Hosa Okunbor, the Chairman of FEVA TV in Toronto, Canada and his managers, J2konsult in the UK.

Have You Read "The Prophet Lied"?

Because the prophet lied
Thousands have died
And thousands more will follow
Because of the lies of this strange fellow.
~ Ekenyerengozi Michael Chima

The Prophet Lied is a kaleidoscopic time capsule in poetry.
From the first poem to the last one, Chima's eclecticism runs like blood through the veins as he addresses all the issues of life on earth from the classic temporal to the spiritual in all existential circumstances with provocative thoughts and evocative figures of speech on every facet and aspect of what transpires in our contemporary world. He is an unapologetic historian of his beloved country Nigeria and a romantic philosopher of the vicissitudes of life. The power of his poetry is his compelling vocabulary and captivating imagery as he loses no sight of every human experience and so he misses nothing with a poetic sense of humour. The Prophet Lied may take Chima into the pantheon of modern poetry for the classical nature of his literature makes it a timeless treasure.

Prize winning Nigerian poet Ekenyerengozi Michael Chima is a student of the famous poet, philosopher, and artist, Kahlil Gibran (1883–1931) and Gibran's all time classic The Prophet has influenced his poetry since he read it 30 years ago before he published his first collection of original poems Children of Heaven in 1987 and followed by Scarlet Tears of London in 2006 under his popular pen name Orikinla Osinachi.
If you love Kahlil Gibran's poetry, then you will appreciate the romantic, political and philosophical poems of Michael Chima.
