Casting the Net – How To Build a Multi-billion Media Company in Africa

Perseverance, tenacity, self-belief, great vision and sheer bloody-mindedness are the key ingredients for any successful entrepreneur.  But, when setting up a new business on the African continent with a seriously innovative business idea that would disrupt the broadcast sector, you need all this and more. These attributes can all be seen in the form of Jason Njoku, CEO and one of the founding partners of iROKOtv  Recently crowned CNBC All Africa Business Leaders Entrepreneur of the year – West Africa, Jason will be sharing his knowledge about how to grow a multi-million dollar media company in Africa with delegates at AfricaCast in November 2013.

iROKOtv, so named after an African hard-wood tree whose prolific growth is unending once its roots are firmly established, is pioneering monetised digital streaming content.  Beginning with a YouTube channel entitled ‘Nollywood Love’, iROKO’s digital Nigerian movie offering very quickly grew to owning and operating its own online platform; streaming movies, music and a host of entertainment services to the African diaspora.

The US and UK make up a significant portion of iROKO’s traffic – those who have a desire to stay in touch with their roots.  However, as Africa’s broadband penetration develops and matures, allowing for faster and cheaper access to internet based content, this will probably change.  In fact, the company is noting an increase in its mobile uptake across Africa as it makes every effort to keep the size of its files reasonable and accessible. When he first started the business – only three years ago – Jason had to fly back to the UK to be able to upload the first movie content he had bought.  How things have changed.

Speaking of his involvement at this year’s AfricaCast event at AfricaCom 2013 and what delegates can look forward to learning, Jason is keen to point out that “while working in Africa is a challenge, it is not insurmountable”.  One of those challenges is the online payment structure in Africa which iROKO is slowly tackling.   “Africa is raw and often brutal, but it presents huge and exciting opportunities for those willing and brave enough to want to make a difference as well as achieve commercial success. For me, AfricaCast will be about celebrating the emergence of a new generation of incumbents in the tech and internet world, as well as meeting those who are willing to go that extra mile in disrupting the norm”.

Prior to iROKO streaming its first Nollywood movie, there had been no established value in online content for the movie producers.  Now it is an entirely different picture.  Jason equates the success of the business in no small part to the creation of a win-win situation for the movie producers and for the audiences who devour each successive “slice of home”.  Considering that Nigeria has 300+ movie producers (include anyone who has a mobile phone and an idea in this equation), churns out some 2000 movies per annum with 85% of those going straight to VCD, you can see that there is a wealth of stock to feed this growing appetite.

The AfricaCast event will provide plenty of debate, discussion and insight into understanding how digital innovation is changing the African broadcast landscape and how to overcome the challenges facing this dynamic market.  To register: www.comworldseries.com/africa

Intel's ‘She Will Connect Campaign" Was Not Unveiled at the Nigerian Premiere of "Girl Rising"

Intel West Africa's false and misleading News Release on the Nigerian Premiere of "Girl Rising"

The news report on Intel Unveils ‘She Will Connect Campaign,’ for Young Women on http://nigeriacommunicationsweek.com.ng/e-business/intel-unveils-she-will-connect-campaign-for-young-women#comment-4369 is a total fabrication, because the Intel Corporation did not launch the ‘She Will Connect Campaign,’ at the event and Mr. Olubunmi Ekundare, Country Manager of Intel West Africa was not recognized at the Nigerian premiere of "Girl Rising" and never spoke at the event. And it was not even included in the programme of the event.

The only notable personalities who were there and spoke at the event were award winning human rights activists Hafsat Abiola-Costello, Founder of Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND), and Dr. Joe Odumakin, President of Women ARISE for Change Initiative, Nollywood diva Kate Henshaw who co-hosted the event and Ms. Shade Bembatoum-Young, President of Zonta International Club of Lagos 1, gave the Welcome Address and a representative of the United Nations, the Officer-in-Charge, United Nations Information Center in Lagos, Mr Oluseyi Soremekun.

The poster child of the Nigerian premiere, Miss Daniella Okoye, the reigning world beauty queen of Little Princess of the Universe with Nollywood diva Kate Henshaw at the event.

The Vanguard of Nigeria published another fake report that Holly Gordon addressed students at the event when she was not there and never arrived Nigeria until Friday night. The following is the false report by the Vanguard newspaper:

Also speaking, internationally acclaimed producer and producer of the Intel ‘Girl Rising’ film, Holly Gordon explained in her address to the students, the rationale behind the documentary. - See more at: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/intel-un-partner-kind-will-connect-campaign-girl-child/#sthash.yPUu2K1W.dpuf
Holly Gordon, the Executive Producer and Executive Director of 10x10, producers of the film was only the Guest Speaker at the second and final screening of the premiere the following day Saturday October 12 at the same venue. The United Nations, Zonta International, KIND, Nigerians Report Online, Kiddies & Brands Company, Deputy British High Commission, Silverbird Group, Cool 96.9 FM, MTN Nigeria and others co-sponsored the premiere organized by Ekenyerengozi Michael Chima, the Girl Rising Event Organizer for Nigeria and Publisher/Editor of Nigerians Report Online. Intel was not part of the planning of the event and never attended any of the meetings of the organizing committee at the United Nations Information Center in Ikoyi, Lagos. Intel's public relations agency The Quadrant Company only sent an urgent email to Mr. Michael Chima on Thursday October 10, 2013 at 9:22 AM with the following message:

URGENT!!! Screening of the Girl Rising Movie tomorrow
Hi Michael,
My name is Joanna and I work for Intel. Intel championed the movie...girl rising and is looking for a way to connect to the premiere tomorrow by way of donations and organizing a red carpet walk for the girls.. Please send me your number so we can discuss.
Best Regards,

Intel only donated four laptops at the event without the knowledge of the Nigerians Report Online, the principal organizing NGO of the Nigerian premiere of "Girl Rising" authorized by 10x10. There was lack of transparency in the distribution of the laptops to four pupils of four different secondary schools located only in Lagos and still unknown to 10x10 and the Girl Rising Campaign team. Miss Joanna Icha, of The Quadrant Company, Intel's public relations agent in Nigeria admitted that the news report is false when she was contacted by Mr. Ekenyerengozi Michael Chima. Miss Icha in her rebuttal said:
"We are as shocked at this as you are and we will ensure that this is solved immediately. This must have been a fault from some of the media in attendance. Not to worry, please remain calm as this has to be a mistake. I will ensure that the appropriate story goes out from tomorrow. (as I'm sure there is an approved release for this purpose). Once again, we will sort this 'falsehood' out immediately."
Then she later sent another email saying:
This is unheard of. Please let me get to the bottom of this. This must have been from the media loyalty team that usually writes for Intel.

But she is yet to issue an official press release since the fictitious news report was circulated and published by several newspapers, including the widely circulated Vanguard of Nigeria as published on the newspaper's website http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/intel-un-partner-kind-will-connect-campaign-girl-child/, Business Day on http://businessdayonline.com/2013/10/intel-un-partner-to-empower-the-girl-child/ and also posted by Anthony Nwakaegho for DigitalSENSE on http://www.digitalsensenews.com.ng/DSBNews/243840/2013/10/intel-partners-un-ngos-on-girl-child-day-2013.

Sudan and Spain Together for the Creation of the First Image for the FCAT

Sudan and Spain together for the creation of the first image for the FCAT

A Spanish production company captures the process of creation of the FCAT poster made by the Sudanese painter Dar Al Naim Mubarak Carmona

 Dar Al Naim Mubarak Carmona.

Cordoba, 4th October 2013. The Sudanese-Spanish artist Dar Al Naim Mubarak Carmona has featured the first image of the tenth anniversary of the African Film Festival of Cordoba, contributing with her painting to the creation of the poster.

The 10th African Film Festival of Cordoba will start in a week with over 66 screenings, filmmakers and producers invited for round tables, conferences and the FCAT Espacio Profesional, as well as an exhibition that has travelled from Malaga to Gorée Island and now, to Cordoba, and a wide range of parallel activities. From the 11th to the 19th of October, Cordoba will travel to our neighbouring continent, and even to the Middle East, through the screen.

The artist Dar Al Naim Mubarak, originally from Khartoum (Sudan), but with a multicultural professional and personal career, has been the one responsible for the creation of the image of the poster of the festival, filmed by Julio Castaño, from Yunaki Films, and whose Director of Photography has been the graphic designer of the FCAT, José Wela.

Dar Al Naim Mubarak Carmona and Mane Cisneros (FCAT Director).

“I see Africa as a unit, as a very smart figure that one can recognise very easily”, this plastic artist highlights, while pointing out the nuances of her statement. “We, as Africans, are a very big community, and thus, very different, in fact, we are all different”. During the process of creation of the poster, Dar Al Naiam never lost sight of audiences, and decided to represent this diversity through a design which is rich in details, sizes and shapes, all of them surrounded by a corporal unit that could be seen as ‘Mama Africa’. However, it is difficult to determine whether this shape corresponds to a female or a male body. The artist seems to be hence incorporating man in the process of emancipation of women. This is not just a common feature in films made by female eyes, but also, by men directors such the Senegalese Ousmane Sembène or Cheick Oumar Sissoko. In fact, the painter herself has not described the figure as a man or woman so far. Instead she refers to it as a ‘unique and static figure, with patterns and details that induce some movement’.

For Yunaki Films, it has been a daunting challenge to represent the level of detail and the laborious method of Dar Al Naim’s work. Yet this challenge has been successfully met, since the video, enriched by Rasha’s music – a Sudanese artist coming from a numerous family of artists and intellectuals – manages to portrays the environment of creation of the artist, and anticipates the spirit of the festival, where the boundaries between Córdoba, Africa and the Arab World melt, reminding us of a very rich and multicultural historic legacy.

Dar Al Naim, who studied in Oxford and has exhibited in that city, as well as in London and Khartoum, among others, has postponed her trip back to Khartoum in order to be with us during the festival.  The opening ceremony will enjoy her participation, where she will present the awards to the winners of the children’s painting competition based on the painting that she designed for the FCAT poster.

IFC Co-sponsors Conference to Facilitate Investment in Nigeria Power Sector

2 Oct 2013 06:38 Africa/Lagos

IFC Co-sponsors Conference to Facilitate Investment in Nigeria Power Sector

WASHINGTON, 1 October 2013 / PRNewswire Africa / - IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, in partnership with EnergyNet Limited and key stakeholders, today announced that it will host the Power Investors Summit on October 2-4. The event, being held at the Oriental Hotel in Lagos, is part of a broader effort to facilitate investments in the power sector in Nigeria.

The Power Investors Summit will provide a platform for international project sponsors and other interested parties to explore investment opportunities. These include projects ranging from gas-to-power, infrastructure, renewable energy and independent power producers (IPPs), which are set to transform Nigeria's power sector as a result of the on-going power sector reforms.

Bernard Sheahan, Director, IFC Infrastructure and Natural Resources, said “IFC is supporting the Power Investors Summit to help the Nigerian government showcase the positive sector reforms achieved. The Nigerian government is putting the right ingredients together for a sustainable power sector, making this the right time to crowd in private sector investment to solidify and put the sector on a long term path”
Simon Gosling, Managing Director of EnergyNet, said “Considerable developments in Nigeria's power sector seem to strengthen the business case for private investors. All of the international project developers that we are working with are talking about Nigeria. It is certainly the most exciting investment destination right now!”

Recently IFC announced plans to support the Nigeria power sector, through the Energy Business Plan. That plan outlines the World Bank Group's support for the addition of up to 1,500mw to the national power grid through support to a number of greenfield IPPs that should help improve electricity supply for 8.0 million households. This is in addition to potential investments in the newly privatized distribution companies, and support to gas production and infrastructure projects.

Under the Energy Business Plan, each World Bank Group institution (IFC, The World Bank, and MIGA) will leverage their competencies and products to provide solutions to projects that encourage their viability and contribute to the sustainability of the power sector. IFC will provide project structuring and investments along with tailor-made packages of risk mitigation instruments that include World Bank Partial Risk Guarantees and MIGA political risk insurance. These interventions will develop power generation, distribution and gas supply.

Famous Nigerian Filmmaker Newton Aduaka To Feature at 10th African Film Festival of Cordoba-FCAT

 Newton Aduaka.

Newton Aduaka the famous Nigerian born filmmaker and the first and only Nigerian filmmaker so far to win the highly coveted Golden Yennenga Stallion (Grand Prize) Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (FESPACO) and other notable prizes is the only Nigerian filmmaker to be featured at the 10th African Film Festival of Cordoba-FCAT in Spain from 11th to the 19th of October. His latest feature length film "One Man’s Show" is a must see at the film festival that will screen 66 films selected from 31 different countries and hosting over 50 filmmakers and producers that would be happy to be interviewed.

Aduaka is famous for his multiple award winning films including "On the edge", the best short film at the 8th African Film Festival of Milan in 1998 and at FESPACO 1999. His first feature film, "Rage" became the first wholly independently financed film by a black filmmaker in the history of British cinema to be released at theaters in the UK and it won several awards at film festivals. His next major success was "Ezra", which the California Newsreel described as the first film to give an African perspective on the disturbing phenomenon of abducting child soldiers into the continent's recent civil wars. "Ezra" had a successful world premiere at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and screened "Not Selected" in Critics' Week at Cannes and won numerous awards, including the Golden Yennenga Stallion (Grand Prize) at the 2007 FESPACO.

Nigerians Report Online and The Nation newspapers are the only Nigerian news media channels covering the film festival.

The African Film Festival of Cordoba-FCAT has been challenging the widespread stereotypical images of the continent for a decade now, placing itself as the only festival in Spain showcasing these cinemas. In order to better represent the multicultural reality of these countries, the programme includes over 60 films made in 24 different countries, not just by Africans in the continent but also, in the diaspora, as well as those made by Europeans that are approaching African narratives.

After eight years in Tarifa (Cadiz), the festival – organised by the NGO Al Tarab, and sponsored by the City Council of Cordoba- moved to this Caliphal city, whose streets reveal an Arab heritage that emerged as the best space to welcome also film titles from the Middle East. In this 10th edition, Cordoba cements its place as the city hosting this unique platform in Spain showcasing African and Middle Eastern cinemas. During these nine days, Cordoba will be able to walk on Africa and the Arab world, rekindling indeed a heritage that is particularly notorious in Andalusia.

Halal Institute, Fully Involved in the FCAT

Halal Institute, fully involved in the FCAT

The entity led by Isabel Romero cements its support to the African Film Festival of Cordoba through its sponsorship

Cordoba, 2nd October 2013. Halal Institute, the certification entity of the Halal Guarantee Mark in Spain, joins the 10th African Film Festival of Cordoba-FCAT not only through its sponsorship, but also, reinforcing the strategies that both organisations have in the countries of Mediterranean Africa.

 Isabel Romero and Mane Cisneros

The work that Halal Institute carries out – partner of AENOR, recognised by the main international entities and countries of halal guarantee in the world – allows over 400 factories and enterprises in Andalusia and Spain to export their products to over 40 countries practising Islam.

The reason for the support to FCAT Cordoba dovetails with Halal Institute’s aim, as a promoter of the brand ‘Cordoba Halal’, of claiming Cordoba’s position in the present, thanks to its historic role in promoting diversity and tolerance.

In this way, the entity seeks for the cooperation of initiatives conceived to and from the Muslim World, at an industrial, commercial, touristic, academic and cultural level. Other than the involvement in FCAT Cordoba, Halal Institute has also taken part in the activities of Amazig and Agrópolis Foundation.

This collaboration aims to be representative of the beginning of a partnership with the festival, in order to, as stated by the Director of Halal Institute, ‘contribute to the consolidation of links and synergies with our closest neighbours, from our modest possibilities’.

FCAT Cordoba celebrates its tenth anniversary, even though this is the second edition at Cordoba. On its first edition last year, FCAT celebrated the 50th anniversary of Algerian cinemas, and this second edition has welcome many Arab film productions, from North Africa and beyond. The festival will take place from the 11th to the 19th of October, with the screening of over 66 films from 31 countries, as well as a wide range of activities, such as FCAT Espacio Profesional, the Film Criticism Workshop and the storyteller for children.

Nigeria Will Not Break Up in 2014 or 2015- Clerics Tells Biafra, Oduduwa, Ogoni Separatists

Nigeria Will Not Break Up in 2014 or 2015- Clerics Tells Biafra, Oduduwa, Ogoni Separatists

~ By Obinna Akukwe

Clergymen from different  denominations under the aegis of Nigeria Prayer Project gathered  at the National Christian Centre, Abuja on the eve of Nigeria’s 53rd independence day celebrations and eve of 100  years of the nation’s forced amalgamation, to declare the counsel of God that Nigeria will not break up either in 2014 or 2015 as predicted.

The occasion was a night vigil to usher the nation into its centenary year and prophetically declare the counsel of God concerning Nigeria. The clerics unanimously agreed that the proponents of break-up of Nigeria will fail as the nation is yet to fulfill its prophetic agenda.
In the sermon delivered at the occasion, the President of Gethsemane Prayer Ministry, Ibadan, Dr Moses Aransiola declared that “the strength of Nigeria is in its present geographical make up and unity.” According to the cleric BIG UNITED Nigeria is better than a little Odua Republic. a little Biafra Republic, a little Ogoni Republic, or a little Arewa Republic”. Dr Aransiola stated further that what Nigeria needed at the moment is “a united spirit like the United States of America and United Kingdom. Such an entity can become an African Super Power like Britain and America”

Declaring Gods counsel about Nigeria, Dr Aransiola said that God has been making known his prophetic agenda for Nigeria to his servants and prophets for many years now at different gatherings both within and outside Nigeria. Some foreigners who received prophetic words for Nigeria include late Pa S.G. Elton (England). Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke (Germany), Prophetess Cindy Jacobs (America), Robert liardon and Rohan Smith (Americans) among others.

According to him, some of Gods prophetic declarations for Nigeria include;

1. Nigeria is my battle axe and weapon of war

2. Out of this nation shall men and women arise who will be my chosen vessels to bring millions to me

3. Nigeria shall fulfill my counsel for the black race, the race that has been despised and enslaved.

4. I will visit and purify my church in Nigeria so that she may fulfill my purpose

5. I will raise Daniels and Josephs who will know how to build, plant, preserve and conserve Nigeria.

6. Son of Man say unto Nigeria and Nigerians ; though you have passed through the valleys of the shadow of death and shall yet pass through the valley of the shadow of death, thus saith the Lord, you shall not die but you shall live.

He described break-up proponents as fatalists and posited that Christianity is about recovery and redemption and not destruction.

Pastor Offodile Nzimiro, the new vision co-ordinator of Throne Room Ministries, Kafanchan, who represented Emmanuel Kure, led the congregation in the blowing of the chauffeur of liberation. Seven chauffeur was blown seven times signifying liberation of the nation while the covenant of salt and water was enacted for the nation signifying that anything that has held the nation backward for ninety nine years shall be healed by the mystery of salt and water according to how Prophet Elisha healed the land of destruction at the urging of the prophets.

The service started by 7pm and ended around 1.30 am but between the hours of 11.55-12.55 an interval of ten minutes, there was unusual divine presence inside the auditorium and the expectant congregation went into wild jubilation before the cloud lifted.

Earlier during the service the address of Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor on the state of the nation was read on his behalf. Pastor Austin Ukachi, Dr Emeka Nwankpa and Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon prayed for the nation.

Addressing news men after the occasion Apostle Martins Atanda of Zion World Prayer and Missions, Sokoto asked clergymen to shun corruption and lead in the move to emancipate Nigeria.  Rev Obinna Akukwe, a human rights activist, observed that the unusual  presence of God just before and after midnight at the event is a sign that God has not abandoned Nigeria and that divinity has  come to either bless, judge or curse the enemies of Nigeria and asked politicians and looters to beware of judgement ..

In a similar vein the Senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Abuja, Paul Enenche has decried the decay in the university educational system in Nigeria. Speaking at the October 1st service, Enenche told the congregation that the decay is such that Ghanaian Medical Graduates can practice in Europe without further examinations while their Nigerian counterparts have to write examinations and rigorous tests before being certified to practice overseas. He led the congregation to bind the spirits plaguing the education sector and also prayed for the strengthening of the naira, lamenting that the once prestigious national currency has been grossly devalued.
