Amber Rose and Nollywood Diva Genevieve Nnaji Among Judges for 2013 Miss Earth Nigeria

Amber Rose.

American super model, singer and actress Amber Levonchuck, popularly know as Amber Rose and Nollywood Diva Genevieve Nnaji are among the top guest judges of the 2013 Miss Earth Nigeria beauty pageant coming up on Sunday September 22, at the prestigious Oriental Hotel on Victoria Island, Lagos. The celebrity red carpet event will start at 5pm. Other guest judges include, Kelechi Amadi-Obi, Karly Redd and Boris Kodjoe.

Genevieve Nnaji and Ibinabo Fiberesima, Founder/Director of Miss Earth Nigeria.

The Founder and Director of Miss Earth Nigeria, Ms. Ibinabo Fiberesima who is a former beauty queen and now first female President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) affirmed that the 2013 edition would be more glamorous, with all the glitz and razzmatazz of a global beauty pageant. “We are currently in talks with top dignitaries who are passionate about the environment and the earth at large,” said Ms Fiberesima who has been organizing the beauty pageant for over a decade and has discovered many outstanding young beauties, including the popular Nollywood actress Ufuoma Ejenobor.

The winner of the 2013 Miss Earth Nigeria Pageant will represent Nigeria at the World Miss Earth Pageant on December 7th in Pasay City, Philippines.

Miss Earth is an annual international beauty pageant promoting environmental awareness. Miss Earth is part of the Big Four international beauty pageants. Along with Miss Universe and Miss World contests, Miss Earth is one of the three largest beauty pageants in the world in terms of the number of national-level competitions to participate in the world finals. The Miss Earth winner is the spokesperson for the Miss Earth Foundation, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and other environmental organizations.

The MISS EARTH Crown

The Miss Earth crown has become a symbol of unparalleled pulchritude and enduring advocacy through the years. To underscore and remind the Miss Earth titleholders the responsibilities that come with this crown, Carousel Productions commissioned the Official Jeweller of Miss Earth, Ms. Ramona Haar, an ecologically-minded artist, to design and craft a new Miss Earth crown. This radiant masterpiece that embodies a broader meaning of "beauties for a cause" was unveiled last November 16, 2009.

The design features various gemstones endemic to the countries participating in Miss Earth Pageant, which they donated as a symbol of cooperation and unity towards a universal goal of saving Mother Earth. To lessen the environmental impact of mining, the new crown is made of 100% recycled 14K Gold and Argentums Sterling Silver. The central design is a flower to symbolize a happy and thriving earth. As Ralph Waldo Emerson puts it, "the earth laughs in flowers." The recurring spiral motif, on the other hand, has always been associated with maternal power and feminine prestige.

But the gems are the highlights of this masterpiece. Black Diamonds, Sardonyx, Calcite, Ruby, Jade Quartz Crystal, Garnet, Peridot, and Pearls are some of the stones that adorn the exquisite Miss Earth crown. Gathered from 80 of the participating countries this year, the stones signify more than just the Earth's precious resources. They characterize the diverse backgrounds, cultural significance, and mystical embodiment of our beauties. Although they come in different shapes, sizes, color and finish, they all form an integral part of the most coveted Miss Earth crown in undeniable harmony. Just like the crown, the Miss Earth beauties work together to have all nations unite in our joint efforts to help preserve and protect our one and only home: the Planet Earth.

International Companies Fail To Keep Pace With Anti-Corruption Legislation

13 Sep 2013 12:56 Africa/Lagos

Global Survey Reveals International Companies' Widespread Failure to Keep Pace With Anti-Corruption Legislation

LONDON, September 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

An international survey of over 300 senior in-house lawyers, conducted for Control Risks by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), reveals companies have much to do to stamp out corruption within their businesses and ensure they do not fall foul of the increasingly tough stance adopted by regulators.
The survey reveals that:
  • Only 50% of companies have procedures to check the background and reputation of business associates. This "due diligence" process is regarded by law enforcement as a vital measure to prevent corruption.
  • Just 50% of global companies have policies banning 'facilitation payments' to suppliers and government agencies.
  • 37% do not have a clause in contracts with sub-contractors and consultants forbidding bribes being paid on the company's behalf.
  • Most respondents cited small 'operational' bribes as the main cause for concern. By contrast, less than a third referred to the 'classic' corruption risks associated with winning business.

International attitudes to facilitation payments may be changing, but companies can find themselves operating in an awkward transition period where there remains no clear consensus on how to deal with them. Because of inadequate internal processes, companies continue to be vulnerable to employees paying bribes without their knowledge. Companies are also insufficiently prepared should they be required to conduct a corruption investigation.

But bribery risks remain very real. Almost half of respondents thought it was possible, somewhat or very likely that they would need to investigate a suspected violation of anti-bribery laws in the next two years.
Commenting on the survey's findings, Richard Fenning, CEO of Control Risks, said:
"Corruption is one of the most significant challenges for international business. Organisations today find themselves under ever-greater scrutiny from regulators, the media, their customers, clients and employees who are demanding that they be able to demonstrate that they operate ethically and with integrity. Yet, despite tougher anti-corruption legislation being enforced ever more rigorously, standards of governance remain at best inconsistent.

"This is a challenging world for business - good companies may wish to comply with their countries' anti-corruption laws, but are disadvantaged by competitor companies not playing by the rules. But the impact of not having proportionate anti-corruption policies in a company can be severe - threatening their reputation and operations."

Notes to editors
About the survey
Control Risks and the EIU conducted a survey among general counsels and senior in-house lawyers from some of the world's largest companies. The 316 respondents were asked how they assess integrity risks, how they prepare employees to resist corruption and manage corruption investigations.

My Appointment as the PDP National Publicity Secretary Is An Act of God

Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, (FIICA).
MY APPOINTMENT AS THE PDP NATIONAL PUBLICITY SECRETARY AN ACT OF GOD – MY APPRECIATION AND PAST

Preamble
As most of you are aware, I was announced as the new National Publicity Secretary of our great party PDP by the new leadership of the party on 9th September, 2013 through a press release by the National Secretary of the party, His Excellency, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola. The announcement came to me as a shock as I neither lobbied nor asked for any such appointment. According to our great and amiable Chairman, Alh. Abubakar Kawu Baraje, my name came tops amongst many other great names suggested for this office. Whatever may be the reasons for my appointment, I owe everything to God, as well as to the numerous journalists and media chiefs without whom I cannot claim to be anything.

My Appreciation
I sincerely thank my Principals who made this appointment possible: Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, GCON; Their Excellencies, Govs Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, Rabiu Musa Kwankawanso of Kano State, Babaganida Aliyu of Niger State, Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State; Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, and Abdulfatai Ahmed of Kwara State; my immediate Principals, Alh. Abubakar Kawu Baraje, the National Chairman of PDP; Comrade Sam Jaja, the party’s National Vice Chairman; and, of course, my immediate boss, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the National Secretary of our party.

It will not be possible for me to know all that played one part or the other to make this possible but be assured that my good God will surely pay each of you back in hundred-folds. It will not be fair should I forget my beloved wife, Evang. Mrs. Ada Chioma Henrietta Eze, whose 51st birthday we were celebrating last Saturday when I was directed to be in Abuja to assume duties as the new National Publicity Secretary of our great party. Seeing that it was a national call, this amiable lady immediately released me to answer the call without delay. My thanks also go to my kids for their understanding in this regard.

I must commend and thank my colleagues, friends and brothers in the media for the wonderful support so far accorded me these few days of assuming this task, not minding that I have neither called nor contacted any of them over this assignment. My special thanks go to members of the PDP Correspondents Chapel, Abuja, who have proved that they are ready to support me in this regard. My friends in the foreign media, social media – the Lagos axis, the Port Harcourt axis, the Yola axis – have proved that they are truly friends indeed. My colleagues, the iron lady of the media in Rivers State and Commissioner of Information, Mrs. Ibim Sementari, and, of course, the silent operator and affable Chief Press Secretary to Gov Amaechi, Mr. David Iyofor, for their love and assistance. I am short of words on how to thank the two of you for all your invaluable assistance so far. Great knowing you people. The trio of Prince Tonye Princewill, Hon Chief Dakuku Peterside and Distinguished Senator Magnus Abe for showing special love to me since I came into contact with each one of you. Hon John Enebeli, the Rivers State Liaison Officer, has been a wonderful host since I came into Abuja. I cannot thank each of these groups of people enough but I am sure that we shall all smile after collaborating to salvage our great party out of the hands of those that made our intervention inevitable.

Challenges of the office
I am not given to fear of any challenge. Therefore, irrespective of the risks and challenges associated with this type of assignment, I am convinced that with the prayers of all Nigerians, I and other great minds on this rescue mission of getting back our great party to the path of honour and democratic principles as envisaged by its founding fathers will surely succeed.

 My plea
My plea is for patience as I hope to start my familiarization tour of some media houses across the country as soon as the issue of our National Secretariat and some others are sorted out. Once again, I thank you all for the love you so far exhibited towards me.
Let me formally conclude by expressing my profound gratitude to our leader, President Goodluck Jonathan, our BOT Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih, and members of the Elders Committee under the able leadership of His Excellency, General Olusegun Obasanjo, General Ibrahim Babamgida, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, Dr. Barnabas Gemade and all our leaders in different capacities as we all work together to bring peace to our great family which most of you have toiled assiduously to bring to this height.
For the numerous calls asking me about my past, I decided to submit this brief biography for your consideration and action where necessary.

Did You Know That Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart Was Banned in Malaysia?

Do you know that Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe (1958) is one of the top 10 most infamously outlawed novels of all time?

Chinua Achebe (16 November 1930 – 21 March 2013).

The gist: One of the most celebrated pieces of African literature, Achebe’s story of Okonkwo, a leader and local wrestling champion in Umofia – a fictional group of nine villages in Nigeria – recalls the influences of British colonialism and Christian missionaries on his traditional Igbo community during an unspecified time period in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.

Why was it banned? Reportedly banned in Malaysia, it is critical of colonialism and its consequences.
