German Newspaper Mistakenly Reports Former President George H. W. Bush Dead

A link on The Huffington Post, the popular American Internet newspaper quoted a source that said that German newspaper Der Spiegel mistakenly reported last week that former U.S. president George H.W. Bush died when in fact he has just been released Monday from a Houston hospital after almost two months of admission for bronchitis. But why would the highly esteemed Der Spiegel make such a terrible goof?

Anna Karenina, Les Miserables, Life of Pi, Lincoln and Skyfall Make ASC Nominations

Seamus McGarvey, ASC, BSC (Anna Karenina), Danny Cohen, BSC (Les Misérables), Claudio Miranda, ASC (Life of Pi), Janusz Kaminski (Lincoln) and Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC (Skyfall) have been nominated in the feature film category of the 27th Annual American Society of Cinematographers Awards for Outstanding Achievement. The winner will be announced at the ASC Awards celebration on February 10 at the Hollywood & Highland Grand Ballroom.

“The films our members have nominated are visually distinctive, and very diverse: a theatrical epic, a grand musical, an imaginative 3-D fable, a sweeping biographical drama, and a stylish spy thriller,” notes ASC President Stephen Lighthill. “What they all have in common is that each project’s cinematographer contributed captivating visuals that enhanced and elevated the storytelling.”

This year’s nod brings Deakins’ total to 11. He won ASC Awards for The Shawshank Redemption (1995) and The Man Who Wasn’t There (2002). His other nominations were for Fargo (1997), Kundun (1998), O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2001), No Country for Old Men (2008), The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2008), Revolutionary Road (2009), The Reader (2009) and True Grit (2011). He was also the recipient of the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

This is Kaminski’s fifth nomination. His prior nominations were for Schindler’s List (1994), Amistad (1998), Saving Private Ryan (1999) and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (2008). Cohen, McGarvey and Miranda have all been recognized once previously – Cohen for The King’s Speech (2011); McGarvey for Atonement (2008); and Miranda for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2009). My Email To Deacon Ayo Ositelu Before Venus and Serena Williams Visited Nigeria

Nigerians are still in shock over the sudden death of Deacon Ayo Ositelu, one of the greatest sports journalists in the world and the greatest sports writer on tennis in Nigeria. Ayo Ositelu, popularly known for his sports column "The Arena" passed on to eternal glory on Wednesday January 9, at 11p.m at Topaz Hospital in Surulere, Lagos. He was looking forward to his 7oth birthday in April.



I am one of his millions of fans who have been following his numerous masterpieces on sports in Nigeria, the rest of Africa and in the world. I sent Ayo Ositelu an email last September on his knowledge of the tennis history of the famous Venus and Serena Williams before their first visit to Nigeria in November 2012. I advised him to write a book on the unparallelled achievements of the phenomenal Serena Williams which only God can replicate. Ositelu was the compere of their celebrated exhibition game at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club on November 2, 2012.

I have been following and reading your reports on the awesome tennis career of Serena Williams and without doubt you know her very well enough to write a book on her achievements as one of the most outstanding tennis players in the history of the sport; a unique role model first for all young black women and for the young women of other races in the world.
From when she won her first US Open title at age 17 in 1999 to date, Serena Williams has accomplished what no other young woman has achieved in tennis history at 30. She is simply phenomenal.

Ex-Im Approves $15.7 Million Direct Loan to Finance Export of American-made Fire Trucks to Nigeria

WASHINGTON, Jan. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The board of the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) has authorized a $15.7 million direct loan to the state government of Lagos, Nigeria, to underwrite the purchase of 32 American fire-fighting vehicles manufactured by W.S. Darley & Co. (Darley) of Itasca, Ill.

The loan, which is in line with the Administration's "Doing Business in Africa Campaign," will support approximately 100 U.S. jobs, according to bank estimates derived from Departments of Commerce and Labor data and methodology. Moreover, 65 percent of the financing is expected to support American small businesses.

"This transaction reflects our continued commitment to increasing exports to sub-Saharan Africa while supporting American small-business jobs," said Ex-Im Bank Chairman and President Fred P. Hochberg. "Additionally, the financing, which targets one of our nine key markets, ensures the government of Lagos can respond efficiently and effectively to emergency situations."

The State of Lagos, which is home to Nigeria's commercial center and largest city of the same name, plans to upgrade its fleet of fire-fighting vehicles. The governor of Lagos has declared that the expansion and re-equipping of the fire service is an urgent matter of state security.

Darley is a family-owned small business founded in 1908. The company, which has exported its products to foreign markets since the 1940s, designs and manufactures firefighting trucks, equipment, pumping, and safety gear.

"This project was only possible because our customer was able to secure financing with the assistance of Ex-Im.
