Why "Elesin Oba" and "Anikulapo" Failed To Be Submitted For the Best International Feature Film Category of the 95th Annual Academy Awards

Why "Elesin Oba" and "Anikulapo" Failed To Be Submitted For the Best International Feature Film  Category of the 95th Annual Academy Awards

Only Biyi Bandele’s film ‘Elesin Oba’ or Kunle Afolayan’s ‘Anikulapo’ would have been eligible as Nigeria's submission for the Best Internationall Feature Film  category of the 95th annual Academy Awards, but being released on Netflix and not for theatrical release caused the rejection. Because, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) reverted back to the status quo of the pre COVID-19 pandemic rules.

After two pandemic years in which Netflix, Apple, Amazon, Hulu, and other streamers could qualify their films just on streaming platforms, the party is over.

The Motion Picture Academy has decreed that only movies that play in theaters will be eligible for the gold statues.

Academy Awards of Merit shall be given annually to honor outstanding artistic and scientific achievements in theatrically released feature-length motion pictures, and to honor other achievements as provided for in these rules and approved by the Board of Governors.

Films that, in any version, receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release will not be eligible for Academy Awards in any category.

Nontheatrical public exhibition or distribution includes but is not limited to:

• Broadcast and cable television

• PPV/VOD

• DVD distribution

• Inflight airline distribution

• Internet transmission

There was no need for any controversy.

A simple clarification would have been enough.

Video is not Cinema.

Video can never be like Cinema.

I prefer cinema to video.

Where there is no gra-gra

There will be no brouhaha.

We need girls' confidence in their leadership skills to grow, and encourage greater political participation, so young women can take part in the decisions that affect them.

Because girls' rights and needs matter.

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania, October 11, 2022/ -- Africa’s leading creator and producer of children’s educational media, Ubongo (www.Ubongo.org), is delighted to announce the launch of Ubongo Girl Champion campaign toolkit as a resource to inspire action for the Girl Child. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to amplify African girls’ voices and experiences in a fun and educational way.

“We believe that girls’ voices should always be amplified no matter the day. Today simply marks the start of a journey to empower the general public to become advocates for the girl child. Through the campaign toolkit, we are leading a movement to celebrate girls in all of their glory and invest in a future that believes in their agency, leadership and potential,” said Ubongo’s Outreach and Communications Manager, Tamala Maerere-Kateka.

The Ubongo Girl Champion campaign toolkit invites the public to partake in hosting screenings of Ubongo’s girl-power episodes for girls and boys of ages 7 to 14. The screenings can take place in both formal and informal settings, such as, at home, at school, in girl-focused programs and at the community level. Those who take part in hosting the girl-power episodes will stand a chance to win an Ubongo Girl Champion award in recognition of the incredible work being done to celebrate and champion girls. The public is encouraged to use #UbongoGirlChampion and tag @ubongokids (https://bit.ly/3CNZkrh) when sharing posts about their screenings on social media platforms to help with the recognition process.

To support the girl-power episode screenings, Ubongo has also created a guide to help with the registration and setting up of girl-led Utu Clubs to empower girls in different communities. Utu Clubs are a fun, interactive way for kids to build knowledge and skills in STEM, do good in their community and work together to act with Utu (shared humanity).

Research shows that girls learn as much as boys from Ubongo edutainment (Borzekowski, 2017). The episodes will introduce viewers to the five remarkable girls of Ubongo Kids (Kibena, Kiduchu, Amani, Nina and Tabasamu) who navigate and overcome challenges while learning STEM and 21st century life skills.

“We are already elevating learning for over 31 million African kids, and our vision is to equip the 500 million kids in Africa with the educational foundation, critical skills, and mindsets to change their lives and the world,” added Mrs. Kateka.

WHAT WOULD FELA DO?

 WHAT WOULD FELA DO?

Since the greatest Nigerian musician of all time, Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti passed on in 1997, the majority of Nigerians have become ass lickers and lap dogs of the  political ruling class and no single Nigerian musician or human rights activist has the balls and guts to dare them and call a spade a spade as Fela dared and faced the consequences without apologies and without regrets.

Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti was a revolutionary musician, both an awesome sociocultural and sociopolitical phenomenon.
No other musician in Nigeria and the rest of Africa and the world has been as awesome as Fela. And it is funny how young singers of the present generation who cannot read and write music are claiming to be great.Great in what sense?

Great in winning American and European music awards that Fela never bothered to compete for?

They cannot even have a small band compared to the Afrobeat music enssemle of Fela Aníkúlápó Kuti.
