Control your Volvo car from your Apple Watch

Control your Volvo car from your Apple Watch

Volvo Cars is set to release an updated version of its ground-breaking Volvo On Call smart app, delivering seamless connectivity with wearables such as the Apple Watch and Android Wear. This will effectively allow Volvo drivers with the Volvo On Call app to control settings, lock/unlock, locate and utilise many other Volvo services from their wrist.

“Volvo On Call is an app that allows you to literally take control over everyday elements in your Volvo. You can set heater timings for those cold and frosty mornings or cool down your car in hot weather, check your fuel level and mileage, or time to next service. It even helps you to locate your car in a crowded parking garage,” explains David Holecek, Director Connected Products and Services at Volvo Cars.

Volvo On Call’s new functionality includes wearable connectivity for devices such as the Apple Watch, a full iPad user interface, Android Wear and a unified Windows Phone app with voice control through Cortana, an intelligent assistant system, amongst others. The update, which will also see the addition of enhanced ‘send-to-car’ capabilities for navigation purposes, is due to be released end of June.

Apart from adding new functionality, the Volvo On Call app has received a brand new design based on Volvo Cars’ celebrated Sensus driver interface in the new Volvo XC90.

Launched in 2001, Volvo On Call became one of the first car-based telematics systems in the world, providing both safety, security and tracking services in the car in case of accident, breakdown or theft using a car-installed SIM card. The system still provides the original safety functions – activated when the car’s airbags are deployed, or when the driver needs assistance, putting them in direct contact with a Volvo On Call operator, who, using GPS technology, can direct emergency services to the scene of the incident.

In recent years the application’s importance and geographic spread has increased exponentially, to include convenience features such as remote locking, fuel level indicators, find my car and remote locking on top of the leading safety and security services that it was originally launched to deliver. “In only a few years we have moved from a safety and security related in-car feature to a solution that allows the driver to stay connected with their car and provides many new benefits to support their everyday requirements,” concluded Sofia Wessman, Manager Volvo On Call at Volvo Cars.

Note to editors:
Volvo On Call is now available in 21 markets and there are currently around 230 000 active subscribers globally During the last 12 months Volvo has recorded around 8 million instances when the remote heater starter was used. Volvo On Call is currently standard in Brazil, the US and Canada. It is an option in all other markets where available. Sweden and China are the biggest option markets. The new XC90 has Volvo On Call as standard in many markets.

The Celebration of Francis Oladele, the Father of Nigerian Film Industry

The iREP International Documentary Film Forum on Friday July 3, 2015, celebrated the great Nigerian filmmaker Francis Adetunji Oladele, the Father of the Nigerian film industry who passed away on June 22, 2015.

Francis Oladele was famous for making the film "Bullfrog in the Sun", the adaptation of Chinua Achebe's all time classic novel "Things Fall Apart" in 1971, featuring Princess Elizabeth Bagaaya of Toro, Uganda, directed by great German filmmaker Jason Pohland and his first film "Kongi's Harvest", 1970 was the adaptation of Nobel Prize laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka's play of the same title. These films and others were done by his CALPENNY Nigeria Limited, the first indigenous film production company in Nigeria he founded in 1965 after returning from the United States of America where he studied photography at the New York Institute of Photography. CALPENNY was an acronym of California, Pennsylvania and New York.

When Francis Oladele got Princess Elizabeth of Toro to play a leading role in "Bullfrog in the Sun", she was already world famous as one of the most beautiful women in the world; one of the first three African women to be admitted to Cambridge University and the first to be admitted to the English Bar Association; the first black woman to have a spread in Vogue in the June 1969 edition in a four-page spread, and in November of 1969, she made history as the first black model to be on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar.

The event was held at the Kongi's Harvest Hall of Freedom Park on Lagos Island, Lagos. Accomplished filmmaker Tunde Kelani with the famous multiple award winning editor and documentary filmmaker Adegboyega Arulogun came to pay tribute to Francis Oladele. The organizers Femi Odugbemi, Jahman Anikulapo and Makin Soyinka with their iREP team coordinated the special event.. The filmmaker's son Lanre Oladele and other members of the family were also present. But no representatives came from Nollywood and Kannnywood..The loudest Igbo,Yoruba and Hausa actors, actresses, producers, directors and marketers were not there This clearly shows how ignorant and disconnected they are from the foundation of the Nigerian film industry and I know that majority of them don't even know the accomplishments of Francis Oladele who was the first Nigerian filmmaker to bring Hollywood filmmakers like the famous Ossie Davis who directed "Kongi’s Harvest" in 1970 and others to Nigeria.

Choice - Whilst Yezz has a broad product range, much research has gone into selecting the key devices which will appeal to the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian target consumer. This research has been validated by key operators, distributors and consumers. Based on this, Yezz will spearhead this charge with key smartphone products which provide the right balance of features, value for money, performance and design to win their hearts. Mobile Technology Puts African Business Owners in the Driving Seat

PRESS RELEASE

Mobile technology puts African business owners in the driving seat

Keith Fenner - Sage ERP Africa.

JOHANNESBURG, South-Africa, July 2, 2015/ -- With smartphone penetration ramping up across Africa, the continent’s businesses have an opportunity to use mobile technology to become more efficient, productive, and responsive in the way they do business.

According to the Ericsson Mobility Report for 2015 (http://www.apo.af/uwS8Ft), there were more than 910 million mobile subscriptions in Africa by the first quarter of 2015. A growing number of these mobile users are now walking around with powerful smart devices that give them access to apps and information wherever they are.

ERP – making collaboration easy

And that, in turn, creates new ways for organisations to interact with employees, suppliers, and other stakeholders. “We’re seeing many organisations mobilise their enterprise resource planning (ERP) software, “says Keith Fenner, Senior Vice-President Sales - Sage ERP Africa & Sage ERP X3 AAMEA, Director and Head of Sage Middle East (http://www.sage.com).

“Workers and managers are increasingly able to access ERP data on the road to serve customers, speed up decision-making, and save time.”

For example, a salesperson can now easily check from a tablet or smartphone whether a product is in stock while on-site with a customer, says Fenner. They can capture the customer’s details and initiate the order without leaving the customer premises, all leading to a faster and more seamless service.

“Mobile workers can now use their time between meetings and at airports more productively,” he adds. “And they can access data on the spot so that they can react to opportunities and problems more rapidly. Of course, mobilising business processes also streamlines processes by allowing data to be captured in the field.”

Accounting for all on the move

Sage Pastel Accounting General Manager, Daryl Blundell, notes that mobility is transforming smaller businesses. “An accounting solution with a good mobile app is a real boon for SMEs,” he says. “Employees with mobile devices can be productive many more hours a week because they can work from anywhere in the world and can maximise what might otherwise have been wasted time waiting in airports and reception rooms.”

He adds: “Sales people can take their tablets into meetings and give PowerPoint presentations, while MDs can quickly see the status of business KPIs on a real-time dashboard. And enterprise mobility can allow employees access to information on the fly, such as financial reports, stock orders, customer data and inventory lists.

“Customers can accept terms by physically signing the mobile device, so deals can be negotiated and closed in one meeting. Employees can keep up to date with work without returning to the office and stay up to date on relevant projects so deadlines aren't missed. What’s more, it helps everyone achieve a healthy work-life balance.”

Mobilising HR functions
Mobile technology is also helping HR departments to become more efficient and to build better relationships with employees. Gerhard Hartman, Head of Sage HR & Payroll’s International Division, says that companies can now offer employee self-service (ESS) across mobile devices to streamline HR processes and engage employees more effectively.

“With mobile ESS, companies can enable employees to file leave applications, doctor’s notes when they’re ill, and expense claims - all from their mobile devices,” he adds. “They can look up their payslips, change their personal details, and more, all without needing to do paperwork or phone the HR department.”

Employees benefit from the convenience and access to information 24/7, while managers and the HR department can handle leave requests, expense claims, and other admin from their own mobile devices. The result is that everyone saves time and gets more done, says Hartman. “Accessing HR tools from your mobile simplify everyone's life - from the employee trying to figure out how many vacation days they have left to the HR team who should be focusing on strategy and value-add rather than on paperwork,” he adds.

Prince Alwaleed Pledges All His Wealth to Philanthropy

Prince Alwaleed Pledges His Wealth to Philanthropy
$32B, A Groundbreaking Gift Dedicated to Philanthropy

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, July 1, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Alwaleed Philanthropies, today announced his intention to donate all of his wealth to philanthropy over the coming years to help build a "better world of tolerance, acceptance, equality and opportunity for all." This $32 billion philanthropic pledge will help build bridges to foster cultural understanding, develop communities, empower women, enable youth, provide vital disaster relief and create a more tolerant and accepting world. "It is a commitment without boundaries. A commitment to all humankind," says Prince Alwaleed.

In his announcement, Prince Alwaleed stated:
"Based on my dedication and passion for philanthropic work for the past 35 years, I now pledge to donate my entire wealth to the Alwaleed Philanthropies, which work in the main fields of intercultural understanding, supporting needy communities, through health promotion, eradication of diseases, provision of electric power to remote villages and hamlets, building orphanages and schools, and much more, as well as providing disaster relief and empowering women, youth and poverty alleviation. This donation will be allocated according to a well-devised plan throughout the coming years. It will be based on a strategy that is supervised and managed by a board of trustees headed by me to ensure that it will be used after my death for humanitarian projects and initiatives."

Prince Alwaleed has supported philanthropy for more than 35 years, donating $3.5 billion thus far through the Alwaleed Philanthropies. One of the leading philanthropic foundations in the Arab world, the Alwaleed Philanthropies serves millions of people across the globe. Prince Alwaleed has formed a board of trustees to oversee this gift, which will focus on finding impactful solutions to some of the most pressing humanitarian issues of our time, without regard to gender, race or religious affiliation.

"Philanthropy is a personal responsibility, which I embarked upon more than three decades ago and is an intrinsic part of my Islamic faith. With this pledge, I am honoring my life-long commitment to what matters most – helping to build a more peaceful, equitable and sustainable world for generations to come," says Prince Alwaleed.

Through this historic gift, the Alwaleed Philanthropies, which have supported thousands of projects in more than 92 countries worldwide, will continue to partner with a range of philanthropic, government and educational organizations to support impactful programs. On this occasion, Mr. Bill Gates, Co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, commented: "Prince Alwaleed's generous commitment promises to significantly extend the great work that his foundation is already doing. His gift is an inspiration to all of us working in philanthropy around the world."

In Saudi Arabia, they have worked on promoting more sustainable communities, through the Housing Initiative, which allows hundreds of thousands of eligible Saudi citizens to receive housing units, or through the Lighting Up Villages in Saudi Arabia Initiative.

Alwaleed Philanthropies also works in the area of women and youth empowerment, by supporting women in the local government field, for example, by providing courses for women to run for Municipal Council elections. Moreover, through the Turquoise Mountain organization, Alwaleed Philanthropies had helped Afghani women by advocating literacy.

As disaster relief providers, Alwaleed Philanthropies has extended a helping hand by its partners in many countries that have suffered from earthquakes and floods, like in Egypt, Jeddah, Nepal and Turkey, in addition to supporting those who had been affected by the Tsunami.

Building bridges between cultures and civilizations is one of the Alwaleed Philanthropies main areas of focus, its work supports six existing centers in the most prominent international universities (Georgetown, Harvard, Edinburgh, Cambridge and the American University of Beirut and the American University in Cairo) in addition to the Islamic Hall at the Louvre in Paris.

Prince Alwaleed's passion for humanitarian work, sustainability and change plays a vital role in the creation, mission and vision of the Alwaleed Philanthropies.
