American Doctor Recruited To Help Fight Ebola in Nigeria

Miami doctor recruited to help fight Ebola in West Africa

MIAMI, Aug. 15, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dr. Aileen Marty left Miami on Thursday on her way to Nigeria, where she will join a team of experts from around the world to help fight the Ebola virus.
Marty, who teaches at the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, was recruited by the World Health Organization to serve with the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network.

Marty is no stranger to Ebola or West Africa. In over 30 years of practicing medicine, 25 of them as a Navy doctor, she has traveled the world, visiting 50 countries and treating diseases like leprosy, dengue, malaria and Ebola.

In addition to treating patients in West Africa, her work within her team will be focused on threat analysis and risk assessment, areas where she has decades of experience. The fact that the FIU College of Medicine has extensive experience and resources in data analysis, she said, can be a significant asset in processing the information and lead to more efficient containment of the outbreak.

Marty served as commander, medical corps, in the U.S. Navy, specializing in tropical medicine, infectious disease pathology, disaster medicine, and in the science, medical response and policy involving weapons of mass destruction. She attended the Navy War College, where she trained in strategic studies, diplomacy, joint military operations and the art of war. The Navy's Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) recognized her as an expert on chemical, biological, radiation and high-energy weapons and called on her to help develop plans, training and policy for government agencies including the White House and the National Security Administration.

Marty is one of only 403 people listed in the international roster as a member of the United Nations Monitoring and Verification Team for Weapons of Mass Destruction.  She is a graduate of the University of Miami School of Medicine.

Ebola: UN health agency seeks to allay fears about air travel

NEW YORK, 13 August 2014 / PRN Africa / -- The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) today sought to allay fears amid reports that airlines are suspending flights over the Ebola outbreak by sending out a social media messages with assurances that “unlike infections like influenza and tuberculosis, Ebola is not airborne.”

“The chance of having someone who is sick with Ebola getting in a plane is small,” WHO tweeted today. “Usually when someone is sick with Ebola, they are so unwell that they can't travel.”

The agency, which also gave a press conference providing "clarifications" on air travel, has declared the current outbreak in West Africa a public health emergency of international concern, while UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Dr. David Nabarro as Senior United Nations System Coordinator for Ebola, in support of the work done by WHO Director-General, Dr. Margaret Chan and her team.
According to the latest WHO update, between 10 and 11 August, 128 new cases of Ebola virus disease, as well as 56 deaths, were reported from Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone, bringing the total number of cases to 1,975 and deaths to 1,069.

The agency said in that update that contact tracing in Guinea, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone has resulted in a range between 94 per cent and 98 per cent of contacts of Ebola cases being identified and followed-up, but in Liberia, efforts are underway to strengthen contact tracing, but help is needed in this area.
WHO today said it is disappointed when airlines stop flying to West Africa. It is “hard to save lives if we and other health workers cannot get in,” the health agency tweeted following a press conference.
“Ebola-affected countries, international airlines are putting systems in place to screen passengers for possible infection,” WHO said. “Countries with big airport with high volumes of travellers are not the same as countries with land borders with Ebola-affected countries.”

WHO has repeatedly said the Ebola virus is highly contagious – but not airborne. Transmission requires close contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, as can occur during health-care procedures, home care, or traditional burial practices, which involve the close contact of family members and friends with bodies.
The incubation period ranges from 2 to 21 days, but patients become contagious only after the onset of symptoms. As symptoms worsen, the ability to transmit the virus increases. As a result, patients are usually most likely to infect others at a severe stage of the disease, when they are visibly, and physically, too ill to travel.

The highest Ebola virus level is found in a dead body, according to WHO, hence, currently the highest risk of Ebola transmission is during burial ceremony.

Dear Michael Pietsch, Ebooks Should Be Cheaper To Attract More Readers

Dear Michael Pietsch,
Amazon just notified me of your "illegal collusion" to discourage millions of poor people from reading?
How will you discourage millions of people from reading?
When you overprice ebooks out of the reach of the poor majority who cannot even afford to pay $10 for paperbacks, then how can they afford $14.99 or $19.99 for a copy of ebook?

Overpricing books, movies and tapes is what caused piracy of intellectual property and made pirates to become millionaires from their ill-gotten riches.

In Africa, only the middle class and upper class are buying and reading books, because the poor masses cannot afford them and would rather go for the pirated copies on the streets. And also most of the millions of unsold copies of printed books end up abandoned in warehouses and millions of dollars have been lost over the years. But Print on Demand (PoD) and ebooks have saved publishers from the loss of millions of dollars in unsold books.

What matters most to authors is for readers to read their books and for every copy of unsold books there is a reader that could not afford it. And the publishing industry has been at the receiving end of the downturn in sales of books in print. And ebooks have saved many publishers from bankruptcy and the best we can do is to make ebooks more accessible and available and the only way we can do so is to make ebooks more affordable to the majority of readers. The cheaper the ebooks the better for publishers, authors and readers, because more ebooks will be sold.

Affordability increases profitability
Please stop working so hard to overcharge for ebooks. They can and should be less expensive.
Lowering e-book prices will help – not hurt – the reading culture, just like paperbacks did.
Michael, let us do the right thing, so that readers will not see us as greedy people.
Your cooperation and support for our united cause to make ebooks the most affordable copies of publications would be highly appreciated.

Faithfully,
Ekenyerengozi Michael Chima

Can Amiodarone, Dronedarone and Verapamil Stop the Ebola Virus?

The clinically approved drugs amiodarone, dronedarone and verapamil inhibit filovirus cell entry.

OBJECTIVES:
Filoviruses such as Ebola virus and Marburg virus cause a severe haemorrhagic fever syndrome in humans for which there is no specific treatment. Since filoviruses use a complex route of cell entry that depends on numerous cellular factors, we hypothesized that there may be drugs already approved for human use for other indications that interfere with signal transduction or other cellular processes required for their entry and hence have anti-filoviral properties.

METHODS:
We used authentic filoviruses and lentiviral particles pseudotyped with filoviral glycoproteins to identify and characterize such compounds.

RESULTS:
We discovered that amiodarone, a multi-ion channel inhibitor and adrenoceptor antagonist, is a potent inhibitor of filovirus cell entry at concentrations that are routinely reached in human serum during anti-arrhythmic therapy. A similar effect was observed with the amiodarone-related agent dronedarone and the L-type calcium channel blocker verapamil. Inhibition by amiodarone was concentration dependent and similarly affected pseudoviruses as well as authentic filoviruses. Inhibition of filovirus entry was observed with most but not all cell types tested and was accentuated by the pre-treatment of cells, indicating a host cell-directed mechanism of action. The New World arenavirus Guanarito was also inhibited by amiodarone while the Old World arenavirus Lassa and members of the Rhabdoviridae (vesicular stomatitis virus) and Bunyaviridae (Hantaan) families were largely resistant.

CONCLUSIONS:
The ion channel blockers amiodarone, dronedarone and verapamil inhibit filoviral cell entry.

TURN – Fund for Artistic Cooperation between Germany and African Countries

In 2012, the Federal Cultural Foundation established the TURN – Fund for Artistic Cooperation between Germany and African Countries in order to encourage a wide range of German institutions to shift their focus on the artistic production and cultural debates in African countries.

German cultural organisations in all artistic areas are called upon to engage in new forms of artistic collaboration with African partners. The programme offers incentives primarily to German institutions and artists (museums, theatres, dance companies, art associations, composers, writers, publishers, etc.) to enhance their profile with new themes, working methods and perspectives.

Between 2012 and 2018, the TURN Fund shall provide funding to artistic projects which represent an innovative contribution toward enhancing Germany's view of contemporary artistic production in Africa, possess high artistic quality and have a public impact in Germany. Each project must request at least 50,000 euros in funding; the applying institution is required to contribute 20 percent of the total cost with capital resources of its own. Applicants from African countries are required to apply together with an institutional partner in Germany.

In the first round of applications, the Foundation awarded one-time funding to project-preparatory research projects. Descriptions of these research endeavours are provided below. Funding applications for research projects are no longer being accepted.

In order to encourage thematic and artistic exchange between the partners, the Federal Cultural Foundation will organize a series of meetings for directors, curators, choreographers, writers, publishers, musicians, designers and filmmakers from the funded projects along with other experts in Germany and the participating African countries.

Funding is awarded by the Executive Board of the Federal Cultural Foundation on the basis of recommendations provided by an independent jury of experts. The following individuals have been appointed to the jury of the TURN Fund:

Sandro Lunin, Zurich: Having worked many years in theatre, e.g. at the Theater am Neumarkt and as co-director of the Schlachthaus Theater in Berne, Lunin was appointed artistic director of the Zurich Theatre Spectacle in 2008, an international festival featuring numerous co-productions and guest performances. Sandro Lunin possesses profound knowledge of the European theatre scene, as well as theatre and dance production in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.

Elke aus dem Moore, Stuttgart: Head of the Visual Arts Department at the ifa - Institute for international cultural relations since 2008. She is responsible for international exhibitions and funding programs. Prior to her current position, she was Artistic Director of the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart and Curator at the Shedhalle in Zurich. Elke aus dem Moore established the artistic platform Prêt-à-partager which deals with art, fashion and art in public space in several African cities. Furthermore, she is the initiator and publisher of "Contemporary and", an online-magazine and virtual artspace on contemporary art seen from African perspectives.

Nana Oforiatta Ayim, Accra/London: Writer, director and art historian with expertise in contemporary African art. Her works have been shown at the New Museum in New York, the NGBK in Berlin and the Museum of African Diaspora in San Francisco. Her articles have been published in numerous magazines including frieze, Kaleidoscope, Arise, National Geographic, The Statesman and African Metropolitan Architecture. She has worked as curator for exhibitions and events at the Liverpool Biennial, the British Museum, the Royal Festival Hall, the Victoria and Albert Museum and other venues.

Jay Rutledge, Munich: Ethnologist, music journalist, producer, DJ and curator. Jay Rutledge has mainly worked as a freelance journalist for the Bayerischer Rundfunk since 1996. His main area of interest is urban African music culture. In 2002, he worked as curator for the “Urban Africa” music programme at the Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria. In 2004, he started a music label that promotes pop music produced in the metropolitan hubs of Africa. He has recently produced the Grammy-nominated album “I speak fula” by the Malian musician Bassekou Kouyate. Currently he moderates the radio shows “Breitengrad” and “Nachtmix” on Bayern 2 Radio.

At the jury session on 25/26 April 2013, the jury recommended awarding 1.4 million euros in funding to twelve projects in seven German states. The Executive Board of the Federal Cultural Foundation also decided to grant 88,600 euros to eleven research projects.

In the second round of funding, the jury of the TURN Fund awarded a total of 1,787,000 euros to 14 new projects.

Makido Film Vienna offers exciting internships to the two winners!

About Makido Film
Who is Makido? Makido stands for MArboe, KIno(German for cinema), and DOcumentary, but also alludes to the game Mikado, highlighting the playful nature with which we want to approach complex topics and that we want to treat our protagonists with particular care and sensitivity.
As traditional, value-determining groups, like political parties, churches but also families “in the conventional sense” lose their impact and significance in our society, what is shown on TV and in cinemas becomes increasingly important. It puts a special responsibility on those who produce films.

What is the focus of Time for Africa! ?
What comes to mind when you think of Africa? Images of poor starving people falling victim to natural disasters and corrupt politicians? The dominant images portrayed in the media serve only to enhance these stereotypical views.
And how are Europeans perceived in Africa? Aren’t they all well off with enough jobs for everyone?
Makido aims to challenge these stereotypes by telling nuanced and exciting stories about people living on the two continents.
“Rather than condemn or endorse the undoubted power of the media, we need to accept their significant impact and penetration throughout the world as an established fact, and also appreciate their importance as an element of culture in today’s world. The role of communication and media in the process of development should not be underestimated, nor the function of media as instruments for the citizen’s active participation in society…”

UNESCO declaration issued on 22 January 1982 at the International Symposium on Media Education in Grunwald, Germany.
We strongly believe that news about Africa should be informed by and produced in cooperation with independent African partners.
The lenses that we will apply are intercultural.
