Jesus Would Have Shared Coffee with the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Jesus Would Have Shared Coffee with the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Says Author of New Book, Woman Meets Jesus

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., March 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- "Lisbeth Salander, the troubled female in the Oscar-winning film The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, is exactly the kind of woman that Jesus would invite for coffee," says Ruth Vander Zee, author of the new book Woman Meets Jesus (Edenridge Press). "Salander," says Vander Zee, "may not fit in at most churches but is the type of exploited woman that Jesus would befriend in the face of social and religious criticism."

Salander, played by Rooney Mara, is a gifted, but deeply troubled young woman with bleached eyebrows, a black Mohawk, tattoos, leather-and-chain dress, combat boots, and atypical body piercings.

"Jesus was a radical rabbi who reached out to females who didn't fit in with the religious and social communities," says Vander Zee. "He didn't care what the religious elites - the Sadducees and Pharisees - thought about women."

Vander Zee, who spent years studying Jesus' often-overlooked interactions with women, concludes in her new book that Jesus challenged the religious establishment's oppressive view of women and befriended and advocated for females like Salander. "Jesus stood up for exploited, rejected, isolated, desperate, and self-destructive women," says Vander Zee.

Vander Zee grew up in the church, learned the popular Bible stories, and eventually married a pastor. But later she chose to look at the second-class status women often occupied within the walls of the church. She decided to dig deeper into Jesus' personal encounters with women. What she discovered changed her view of women and Jesus.

In order to show how radical Jesus really was, Vander Zee retells the stories of Jesus' encounters with biblical women from their own, first-person perspectives. One woman is the prostitute who visited Jesus at Simon the leper's house and offended the respected guests by lavishing perfume upon Jesus. Another is the ostracized woman at the well who had multiple husbands. Yet another is the untouchable woman who hemorrhaged for 12 years.

"The whole idea that Jesus was anti-women is a modern myth," says Vander Zee. "I can imagine Jesus sitting in a Stockholm cafe with Salander, tearfully listening to her life story and encouraging her to follow the way of the prophet Micah to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with her new-found advocate, Jesus."

Ruth Vander Zee is the award-winning author of social-issue-oriented children's books, including Erika's Story, Mississippi Morning, Eli Remembers, and Always With You. A self-described late bloomer, she earned her college degree when she was 40, wrote her first book when she was 55, speaks to church and women's groups across North America, and writes the popular blog journey-of-faith.com. She lives in Miami, Florida.

New ECOWAS President assumes office

ABUJA, March 1, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The new President of the ECOWAS Commission, His Excellency Kadre Desire Ouedraogo assumed office on Thursday, 1st March 2012 with a pledge to contribute toward the attainment of the dreams of the Organization's founding fathers by making West Africa a leading power for the realization of Africa's unity.

“Let us work together against poverty, injustice and bad governance,” he affirmed, during a brief ceremony to introduce him to staff at the Commission's Abuja Headquarters. “Let us work hard to build a community which all of us shall be proud of.”

President Ouedraogo urged West African youths in particular, to share his “enthusiasm and hope for the future of ECOWAS and indeed, the brilliant future of Africa,” stressing that “ECOWAS must be a land of peace, unity and progress.”

He paid glowing tributes to the founding fathers of ECOWAS and those who sometimes sacrificed their lives to build the Community over the past 37 years of its existence.

Specifically, President Ouedraogo expressed his profound gratitude to the government and people of Nigeria, and President Goodluck Jonathan, the immediate past Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, for the warm welcome and support extended to him.

He also commended the outgoing President of the Commission, His Excellency James Victor Gbeho and his predecessor, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, for the “wonderful job they have done for ECOWAS and its institutions.”

President Ouedraogo, a former Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, who served as Deputy Executive Secretary of ECOWAS between 1985 and 1993, equally commended ECOWAS leaders for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to do his best.

He called for the total cooperation of the Commission's new team including Vice-President Dr Toga Mcintosh, the Commissioners who assumed duties recently and the entire staff, to enable the organization deliver on its mandate and objectives.

In his remarks, President Gbeho said the assumption of duty by the new management team marked a new stage in the life of ECOWAS.

He welcomed his successor and urged the Commission's staff to extend to the new management team the same level of cooperation or even more than he and his team enjoyed.

ECOWAS has since its founding in 1975 through the Treaty of Lagos, undergone some major restructuring including its transformation in 2007 from an Executive Secretariat to a Commission with a President, Vice-President and seven pioneer Commissioners.

Until his new appointment, President Ouedraogo was his country's Ambassador and Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Belgium, The Kingdom of the Netherlands, the United Kingdom Northern Ireland as well as the country's Permanent Representative to the European Union, the Organization for the prohibition of Chemical Weapons, and the World.

Report by the Economist Intelligence Unit Gives High Level Picture of the Continent's Healthcare Challenges

BEERSE, Belgium, March 1, 2012/PRNewswire/ --

"The Future Of Healthcare In Africa"

By 2022 reformed healthcare systems in African countries could succeed in making quality care available to a majority of their citizens, given the political will to meet healthcare spending targets. This is one of the conclusions in a new report by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), commissioned by Janssen Pharmaceutica NV and called "The Future Of Healthcare In Africa".

The report focuses on five possible future scenarios for African healthcare systems over the next ten years. Thirty four leading healthcare experts, representing the entire chain of stakeholders across the sector, helped the EIU's expert analysts identify the key trends shaping African healthcare systems and these were then used to develop scenarios that depict the possible health landscape on the continent in 2022 (see Press Release by The Economist for more information).

Jane Griffiths, Company Group Chairman of Janssen in EMEA, explains : "The study draws a very high level picture, combining statistics with trends and possible scenarios that could form the basis for further discussions on which policy options to take. We did the same thing last year with "The Future Of Healthcare In Europe". Solutions can only become clearer by having open and constructive discussions with all parties involved, based on factual analyses".

Janssen is active in Africa in many ways. Apart from selling its products across the region via its offices in Algeria, Egypt and South Africa, and working with distributors elsewhere, the company has also set up a number of projects specifically designed for infectious and neglected diseases, including research for a new tuberculosis treatment in collaboration with the TB Alliance, a microbicide targeting HIV, with the International Partnership for Microbicides, a new research programme against elephantiasis and river blindness with the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) and the Gates Foundation, as well as against sleeping sickness, Chagas and visceral leishmaniasis.

For the products that are already approved, Janssen sets up access programmes, such as the recently concluded agreements with generic manufacturers in Africa to manufacture and distribute the company's HIV/AIDS compounds, or the free distribution of treatments against intestinal infections with the Children Without Worms programme (More information is to be found in the attached backgrounder).

Commenting on the various scenarios presented in the report, Jane Griffiths continues "Broad and systematic access to healthcare can only be achieved when the proper healthcare insurance systems are in place, both public and private. This requires an investment by the authorities, but it is one that will offer immediate and sustainable returns to every country's economy, through decreased mortality, continued education, better stability in the income of households. It is encouraging to see the results that countries such as Ghana, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Burundi, Tunisia and Ethiopia have achieved in the past years. We tend to focus too much on what doesn't work in Africa, but we can learn only from the good examples".

With regard to medicines, specific initiatives can be taken which could benefit the region : "Regulatory harmonisation for the approval of medicines should be high on the agenda in Africa, " says Jane Griffiths. "Some of our HIV medicines have delayed market access because of different requirements across the region. Counterfeiting is also a scourge, and we have started with a pilot project with the Nigerian authorities to check how patients can verify the product's authenticity through text messaging. Technology options could mean a lot in the continent".

CGAP, Grameen Foundation, and MTN to Invest in Mobile Money Products for the Unbanked

Grameen Foundation's AppLab will work with consumers and financial institutions on products appropriate for people living on less than $2.50/day

BARCELONA, Spain and WASHINGTON, March 1, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today at the Mobile World Congress 2012 in Barcelona, CGAP, Grameen Foundation, and MTN Uganda announced plans to introduce a new initiative to research and develop mobile financial products for the poor. CGAP, an independent policy and research center dedicated to advancing financial access for the world's poor, together with MTN and Grameen Foundation will provide US$1 million in financing to this initiative. The aim is to build upon the extensive research already conducted through Grameen Foundation's Application Laboratory (AppLab) in Uganda and to leverage MTN's successful Mobile Money service.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20091026/GFLOGO)

Access to financial services can help the poor smooth their income and invest in productive assets, education and health services. However, 2.7 billion people – most of whom live in developing countries – still do not have a bank account. This gap is due to two major challenges: Many low-income communities are underserved by financial institutions, and the products offered by these institutions are more suitable for higher-income clientele. The growth of mobile money is helping address the access issue, but there is still a need for product offerings that are appropriate for low-income consumers.

The goal of the initiative is to drive the next wave of innovation in the mobile money space by researching and developing products that are both appropriate for poor clients and commercially viable for the financial service providers involved.

"To achieve our goal of financial inclusion for all, the industry needs to move beyond mobile payments and provide a full array of pro-poor mobile financial products," said Tilman Ehrbeck, CEO of CGAP.

"This collaboration with CGAP and MTN Uganda will enable us to lead the next wave of product innovation to truly serve poor people's needs – a goal that is at the very core of Grameen Foundation," said Alex Counts, president and CEO of Grameen Foundation.

"MTN is committed to being innovative and relevant to its customers, particularly in this increasingly competitive global market. This partnership will ensure that we are able to address the needs of our customers in the rural market by enabling them to access otherwise inaccessible financial services. This in turn will ensure that the rural poor have better access to other social services, such as education, health and investment opportunities," said Themba Khumalo, CEO MTN Uganda.

CGAP is an independent policy and research center dedicated to advancing financial access for the world's poor. It is supported by more than 30 development agencies and private foundations that share a common mission to alleviate poverty. Gunmen Murder Veteran Radio Journalist in Mogadishu

Execution-style murder / Radio Somaliweyn manager gunned down outside Mogadishu home

PARIS, February 29, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Reporters Without Borders is stunned to learn that Abukar Hassan Mohamoud, the manager of Mogadishu-based radio Somaliweyn, was shot dead today outside his home in the capital's Aargada district by two men armed with pistols.

The press freedom organization condemns his cold-blooded murder, which joins a long list of crimes of violence against journalists in Somalia, and reiterates its call to the international community to do everything possible to ensure that these killings do not go unpunished.

“We offer our most since condolences to Mohamoud's family, colleagues and friends,” Reporters Without Borders said. “This murder is the latest example of the extraordinary violence to which journalists are exposed in Somalia. Indifference to the fate of Somali journalists must stop. We reiterate our call for an independent international commission of enquiry into crimes against journalists in this country.”

Nicknamed Kadaf, Mohamoud was a long-standing member of the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), a Reporters Without Borders partner organization. He had participated in all the NUSOJ campaigns calling for journalists to be protected against harassment and physical attack and he courageously never hesitated to lend his name to statements condemning each of the murders of his colleagues. Aged 43, he had a wife and two daughters.

He was the second journalist to be murdered this year, following Shabelle Media Network director Hassan Osman Abdi, who was shot dead outside his Mogadishu home by five unidentified gunmen on 28 January.

Somalia has for years been the deadliest country in Africa for journalists. According to the monitoring of Reporters Without Borders and NUSOJ, four journalists were killed in 2011, three were killed in 2010 and nine were killed in 2009.

Just a week ago, Reporters Without Borders wrote to the participants in the London conference on Somalia to remind them about violence against journalists and request the creation of an independent international commission of enquiry into all the abuses against media personnel in Somalia: http://en.rsf.org/somalia-open-letter-to-delegations-22-02-2012,41922.html

Unaccompanied Children Found on Chad-Nigeria Border

IOM Assessment Team Finds Unaccompanied Child Returnees on Chad-Nigeria Border

GENEVA, February 29, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- A joint IOM Chadian assessment team that travelled to a remote area on the Chad-Nigeria border has discovered a group of over 800 destitute Chadian returnees from Nigeria, including a large number of unaccompanied children aged between 6 and 14.

The assessment by IOM and the CNAR (National Agency for Refugees and IDPs), was undertaken at the request of the Chadian government following reports of Chadian nationals fleeing violence in Nigeria.

It found that many of the migrants in the village of Ngouboua, 30 km from the Nigerian border were children sent by their parents to Nigeria to study in Koranic schools. They were only accompanied by their Marabout religious teachers.

Others in the group, who were all in urgent need of food, water, medical care and transport to their homes, were Christian families who had gone to Nigeria to find work, according to the assessment team.

The migrants told the team that they had travelled across Lake Chad by boat from the Nigerian villages of Douri and Maday, which had been seriously affected by violent clashes between the extremist Boko Haram Islamic group and the Nigerian military.

The Nigerian immigration services reported on Monday that over the past six months they have repatriated some 11,000 "undesirable" foreigners, mainly from Chad and Niger.

Chad's Lac region where the returnees are sheltering has been experiencing food shortages for some time. The migrants are currently surviving on whatever food is given to them by the villagers. The team saw several children begging for food.

Some of the group are sleeping in makeshift huts. Others are living in the open with inadequate clothing to protect them from the cold at night.

According to medical staff in the assessment team, many of the children are also suffering from exhaustion and dehydration following a long journey and exposure to the elements.

How to Feed the World by 2050

PARIS, 28 February /PRNewswire/The planet is quantitatively capable of feeding its 7 billion inhabitants, though one billion people suffer from hunger and another 1.4 billion are overweight. This disequilibrium could even be greater by 2050, when we are expected to hit 9 billion people. Will the Earth be able to feed all these men and women when resources become scarce and climate change strongly threatens global food systems? This month, Marion Guillou, President of the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA), and Gérard Matheron, President of the International Cooperative Centre for Agronomical Research for Development (CIRAD), have published The World’s Challenge, Feeding 9 Billion People.

Faced with this challenge, the book offers an optimistic response: Yes, it is possible to provide quality food to the 9 billion people who will be living on our planet in less than 40 years. However, in order to achieve this goal all stakeholders – farmers, politicians or ordinary citizens – must be mobilized as soon as possible to affect a profound change in current agricultural and food models.

To fight against hunger, the most urgent action is to tackle poverty, and in this matter there is a need to invest in agriculture. Innovation encourages increasing yields and the limitation of losses after harvests in rural areas where the majority of undernourished live. Researchers’ works will not prove efficient without policy action on food security; to mobilize emergency supplies in a situation of famine; to fight against excessive volatility that characterizes current food prices and equally impairs producers (when prices are too low) and consumers (when prices are too high).

The “produce more” motto will eventually give way to the “produce better” one. Given the strain on natural resources and space, the priority is to develop agricultures that are both productive and ecological. Again, innovation plays a key role, in terms of developing crops that are less demanding in inputs or to promote sustainable, viable and livable practices. It is also essential to do whatever it takes to reduce the losses and waste, which amounts to about one third of food at different stages: processing, distribution and final consumption.

We will need to favor healthy diets to prevent overnutrition and overweight. In this matter, all countries are concerned, developed countries, emergent countries, but also developing countries where two burdens coexist, poor access to food and obesity.

“Feeding the planet”. Colossal challenges hide behind this expression. The first task is to be aware of where we are heading. If this book can contribute to this awareness, it will already have fulfilled a part of its mission, says Marion Guillou.

This book tries to build upon the recommendations sent last December to the policy makers of the Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change (CGIAR), chaired by Lord Beddington, and of which Marion Guillou is a member. While it is based on scientific studies, such as the Agrimonde foresight study conducted by INRA and CIRAD, the book is widely accessible for the general public.

Marion Guillou has served as Chief Executive Officer of the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) since August 2004; she was previously the Director General from 2000 to 2004. She also directs the Joint Programming Initiative “Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change” which gathers 20 European countries and aims at creating a European research area in the fields of agriculture, food security and climate change. Marion Guillou chairs the Agreenium consortium, created in 2009, which unites French teams in research and in higher education in agronomy and veterinary science on an international scale. Born in 1954, doctor of physical chemistry, Marion Guillou is an engineer IGREF (Rural engineering, water, forestry).

Applications invited for United Nations journalism fellowships

NEW YORK, February 28, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The Dag Hammarskjöld Fund for Journalists is now accepting applications from professional journalists from developing countries for its 2012 fellowship program. The application deadline is Wednesday, March 30, 2012.

The fellowships are available to radio, television, print and web journalists, age 25 to 35, from developing countries who are interested in coming to New York to report on international affairs during the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The fellowships will begin in early September and extend to late November and will include the cost of travel and accommodations in New York, as well as a per diem allowance.

The fellowship program is open to journalists who are native to one of the developing countries in Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean, and are currently working full-time for a bona fide media organization in a developing nation. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in and commitment to international affairs and to conveying a better understanding of the United Nations to their readers and audiences. They must also have approval from their media organizations to spend up to two months in New York to report from the United Nations.

Details with regard to applying for a journalism fellowship can be found on our web site at www.unjournalismfellowship.org.

In an effort to rotate recipient countries, the Fund will not consider journalist applications for 2012 from nations selected in 2011: China, Ethiopia, India and Nigeria. Journalists from these countries may apply in 2013.

Four journalists are selected each year after a review of all applications. The journalists who are awarded fellowships are given the incomparable opportunity to observe international diplomatic deliberations at the United Nations, to make professional contacts that will serve them for years to come, to interact with seasoned journalists from around the world, and to gain a broader perspective and understanding of matters of global concern. Many past fellows have risen to prominence in their professional and countries. The program is not intended to provide basic skills training to journalists, as all participants are media professionals.

Questions about the program, eligibility and application process should be directed to fellowship@unjournalismfellowship.org.
