Western Propaganda, NATO, The Arab Spring And The Rest Of Us

Millions of people in Nigeria and the est of the world celebrating the downfall of Muammar Gaddafi' should not be fooled by Western Propaganda.

The Internet is largely the propelling force of the domino effect of political angst sweeping many countries as the majority of unemployed youths and the lunatic fringe are blaming their elders and leaders for their woes.

But let us hope the angst will not turn to anarchy.
Angst often brings out more of the worst in humans than the best.

The Arab Spring is an ill wind no matter how you see it from the rose tinted glasses of Western Propaganda. Terrorists are only engaged in their power struggle in the Middle East and when they have finished turning against themselves, they are going to turn their angst against you. No amount of Western Propaganda can convert the Muslims to love the Christian Imperialism of Western Super Powers and their allies. Without the undemocratic interference of NATO, Gaddafi and his murdered sons and other thousands of the unfortunate villains and scapegoats of the so called Libyan revolution would have been alive today. NATO is the monstrous King Kong of the hypocritical Western Propaganda that was unleashed on the enemies of America and her allies in the Middle East.

May be it is time to take to the streets against NATO.
Then I will believe the "Los Indignados" are not the lunatic fringe.

Nigeria's Dele Olojede Wins John P. McNulty Prize

Dele Olojede

The famous Publisher of 234 Next, Dele Olojede has won the John P. McNulty Prize for 2011, with a cash award of $100,000 given to the Nigerian Journalist for revolutionizing the news media landscape.

The most illustrious Nigerian journalist won the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting for his "fresh, haunting look at Rwanda a decade after rape and genocidal slaughter had ravaged the Tutsi tribe" in 2005.

"With NEXT, Dele is truly changing the expectations to which Nigerian leaders are held, equipping Nigerians to be active citizens," said Anne McNulty, founder of the McNulty Prize. "The jury was inspired by his courage and conviction in forging new ground, and leading his country toward a better future."

Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, judge for the 2011 McNulty Prize, said, "Dele Olojede is a remarkable leader operating in a very difficult environment. He is giving the people of Nigeria what they do not have, which is unbiased information. He is standing up for media and government transparency and is a formative figure in building a strong democratic base in his country."

John P. McNulty Prize Announces 2011 Winner
Secretary Albright to Award $100,000 to Nigerian Journalist Revolutionizing Media Landscape

PR Newswire

NEW YORK, Oct. 25, 2011

NEW YORK, Oct. 25, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Aspen Institute and Anne Welsh McNulty, Institute trustee, today announced journalist Dele Olojede as the winner of the fourth annual John P. McNulty Prize. A committee of judges including Madeleine Albright, Olara Otunnu, Shashi Tharoor and Anne McNulty selected Olojede in recognition of his groundbreaking work to deliver unbiased information to the Nigerian public, demand government transparency and advance journalistic standards in the country.

Olojede is the CEO and Founder of NEXT, the leading source for independent Nigerian and African news. Prior to founding NEXT, Olojede attended Columbia University's School of Journalism and spent 16 years at Newsday, where he received the Pulitzer Prize for his "fresh, haunting look at Rwanda a decade after rape and genocidal slaughter had ravaged the Tutsi tribe." After becoming an Africa Leadership Initiative Fellow of the Aspen Global Leadership Network, Dele decided it was time to return to his native Nigeria in 2008 to elevate the public dialogue in a nation characterized by corruption, a wealth gap, and an acceptance of the status quo. The result was NEXT, a venture founded on journalistic integrity and credibility, which is now the most trafficked news site in the country at two million monthly views.

"Our aim is nothing less than to transform the way Nigerians think, to arm the citizen with factual information so that she will make better decisions," said Olojede. "The funding conferred by the McNulty Prize is invaluable in continuing and growing NEXT's operations, particularly as we expand our digital media presence. Ultimately, our real impact will be measured by the changing thinking of the Nigerian people, but to receive the international recognition of the McNulty Prize is immensely humbling."

Running a 24-hour newsroom on diesel generators, Dele and a team of young people work to bring unbiased investigative reporting to a country mired in corruption. To date, NEXT has exposed the role of Nigerian political elite in the Halliburton scandal, uncovered tax evasion by Nigeria's richest tycoon and publicized the pay of Nigerian legislators. After NEXT exposed the concealed truth that Nigeria's President, Umaru Yar'Adua, was seriously brain damaged, agents of the State Security Service attempted to burst into the newsroom and seize the paper. The story precipitated the appointment of a new leader in the country.

The McNulty Prize seeks to galvanize efforts to address the foremost social, economic and political challenges of our time by recognizing the very best in high-impact work by Fellows from the Aspen Global Leadership Network under taken as part of their Fellowship. Projects are assessed on their creativity, impact and sustainability. The 2011 finalists include:

* Jay Coen Gilbert & Andrew Kassoy of B Lab (Philadelphia, Penn.), an organization dedicated to redefining business to make solving social and environmental problems as important as generating profits.
* Timothy Marquez of Denver Scholarship Foundation (Denver, Colo.), an organization that combats the inequity of college success for Denver's youth by distributing scholarships and helping students navigate the college and financial aid processes.
* Ann Lamont of Leadership & Innovation Network for Collaboration in the Children's Sector (South Africa), an organization that facilitates leadership and interaction between actors in the children's sector and innovates new approaches to overcome the systemic problems hindering the delivery of services to children.
* Alejandra Poma of Libras de Amor (El Salvador), an organization that ensures thousands of infants a fair start in life by taking on malnutrition in El Salvador's poorest regions.

The winner and finalists will be recognized at a reception that will include a conversation between Dele Olojede and Walter Isaacson to be held on November 2 from 6:00 - 8:00 PM at the Metropolitan Club, President's Ballroom. On November 3, Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will present the McNulty Prize to Olojede at the Aspen Institute Annual Awards Dinner.

We Killed Nigerian Journalist for Spying On Us - Boko Haram

25 Oct 2011 06:16 Africa/Lagos

Nigerian journalist shot dead / Islamist group claims responsibility

NEW YORK, October 25, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Authorities in northeastern Nigeria must urgently take steps to ensure the safety of media workers, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today following Saturday's assassination of a journalist in a shooting claimed by Islamist militants.

Zakariya Isa, 41, a reporter and cameraman with the state-run Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), was shot dead in front of his residence in Maiduguri, capital of the Northeastern state of Borno, on Saturday around 7:30 p.m. local time, Sale Mahdi, news manager of the local NTA bureau, told CPJ. Moments before the murder, the gunman and another man had approached Isa to borrow a water kettle, supposedly to perform ritual Islamic ablutions before prayer, Mahdi said. Isa had been on vacation since Friday, he added.

Today, Boko Haram, a militant Islamist group which seeks the imposition of Shariah law in the predominantly Muslim states of northern Nigeria, disclosed it was behind the killing, according to local journalists and Agence France-Presse. AFP cited an email statement in the local Hausa language from Boko Haram spokesman Abul Qaqa, in which the militants said they "killed [Isa] not because he was a journalist but for his personal misconduct." The statement added: "We killed him because he was spying on us for Nigerian security authorities," according to AFP. "We have ample evidence ... that he was giving vital information to security agencies on our mode of operation that led to the arrest of many of our members."

Local journalists and Nigerian authorities rejected the accusations, according to AFP. The Boko Haram statement also warned that the group would not hesitate to "kill anybody that steps on our toes" and follows a statement in Maiduguri in September in which the group threatened to attack media organizations over what it described as misrepresentation of its activities, press reports said.

"We condemn the murder of Zakariya Isa and deplore the targeting of journalists by Boko Haram," said CPJ Africa Advocacy Coordinator Mohamed Keita. "We call on Nigerian authorities to counter near-impunity in the murders of journalists by ensuring that Isa's killers are brought to justice."

According to Mahdi, threatening text messages from Boko Haram members and supporters prompted three journalists from the local NTA station to flee the region in recent weeks. NTA journalists also come under pressure from security forces over their coverage of Boko Haram, he said.

Boko Haram, which means "Western education is forbidden," has claimed responsibility for a series of bombings and assassinations in the country, including the August 26 suicide bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Nigeria.

Isa started his career at NTA in 1992 and left behind two wives and two children, according to Mahdi.

Statement of the Secretary-General / Declaration of Liberation of Libya

NEW YORK, October 24, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Today in Benghazi, the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) declared the full liberation of Libya, marking a historical juncture that signifies a people attaining their freedom after decades of dictatorship.

Today marks an occasion for Libyans to celebrate, to look forward to a future of liberties and opportunities, from the right to express an opinion freely to the right to elect their own government.

From this day onward, the Libyan people will be in full charge of their future - a future that their new leaders have declared will be based on justice and national reconciliation. Their commitment is to building accountable democratic institutions, guided by respect for human rights and the rule of law, and to the transparent management of Libya's resources to the benefit of all Libyans.

The end of the war is only the beginning of what Libyan fighters, youth and women have struggled for: their determination now is to build a truly new Libya, overcoming the grim legacy of human rights abuse and corruption, and now so many killed or disabled during the conflict.

My Special Representative for Libya attended the ceremonies today in Benghazi at which liberation was declared. On this momentous day, the United Nations restates it commitment, through the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, to support the Libyan people and their authorities as they work to build this brighter future.

Gates Foundation and Partners Mark 2011 World Polio Day

Gates Foundation and Partners Mark 2011 World Polio Day

Washington, DC, on July 28, FC Barcelona President, Sandro Rosell; FC Barcelona Coach, Josep Guardiola; and Bill Gates, Co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; announced a 3-year partnership to energize the global fight to end Polio.

Seattle, WA, October 21 /PRNewswire/ — On this year’s World Polio Day (October 24, 2011), the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a global community of partners are calling for increased commitment and greater accountability from political leaders to end polio, and for supporters around the world to lend their voices to the fight.

Bill Gates signs the pledge to eradicate polio during the Town Hall meeting with local government representatives and traditional leaders in the Presidential Lodge at Kebbi 27 September 2011.

“We have an extraordinary opportunity to eradicate polio but we need greater global commitment, leadership, and funding,” said Bill Gates, co-chair of the Gates Foundation. “We work with exceptional partners like Rotary, FC Barcelona and the Global Poverty Project to help keep polio a priority.”

Bill Gates administers polio drops to a child in the Fulani settlement, Mashakeri village, in Kebbi state on 27 September 2011 while Jeff Raikes looks on.

Two decades ago, polio killed or paralyzed 350,000 children a year worldwide. Since then, lifesaving vaccines have dramatically reduced the spread of polio. They are one of the best long-term investments to prevent disease and give children a healthy start to life.

Today, the world is 99 percent of the way there. But recent outbreaks in places like China and Chad, as well as persistent challenges in Nigeria and Pakistan, remind us that if there is polio anywhere, there is a risk of polio everywhere.

Council,

1. Takes note of the communication made by the Commission on the latest developments in Libya;

2. Recalls all its earlier communiqués on the situation in Libya, as well as the communiqué adopted by the AU High‐Level ad hoc Committee on Libya, at its meeting held in Pretoria, South Africa, on 14 September 2011, and the statement made by the Chair of the Union, President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, at the UN‐sponsored High‐Level meeting on Libya held in New York, on 20 September 2011;

3. Further recalls the assurances formally provided to the AU by the leadership of the National Transitional Council (NTC) of Libya, stressing: (i) its strategic commitment to the African continent, (ii) its commitment to give priority to national unity and to bring together all Libyan stakeholders, without any exception, to rebuild the country, and (iii) its commitment to protect all foreign workers within Libya, including the African migrant workers;

4. Decides, in view of the above and taking into account the uniqueness of the situation in Libya and the exceptional circumstances surrounding it, and without prejudice to the relevant AU instruments, to authorize the current authorities in Libya to occupy the seat of Libya in the AU and its organs;

5. Authorizes the Chairperson of the Commission to take the required steps for the early establishment of an AU Liaison Office in Tripoli, to be headed by a Special Representative, to assist, in cooperation with the United Nations, the League of Arab States and other stakeholders, in the efforts aimed at stabilizing the situation in Libya, promoting national reconciliation and inclusivity and facilitating the transition process towards democratic institutions, building on the relevant provisions of the AU Roadmap;

6. Reiterates the AU's deep concern with the proliferation of weapons originating from Libyan military depots and their impact on regional security and stability, notes with satisfaction the growing realization, within the international community, of the gravity of the threat thus posed, and requests the Commission to work with the United Nations and all countries concerned and relevant partners towards the early convening of a regional conference in order to facilitate regional coordination and cooperation and related efforts;

7. Urges the Libyan authorities to spare no efforts in ensuring the safety and security of the African migrant workers, and appeals to the member states and partners to cooperate with the Commission towards the early holding of a pledging conference to mobilize resources for the socio‐economic reintegration of the migrant workers into their countries of origin;

8. Takes note of the provisions of resolution 2009 (2011), and requests the United Nations Security Council to lift the measures imposed with respect to the no‐fly zone and ban on flights and to terminate the authorization given to member States in this respect, bearing in mind the very purpose for which resolution 1973 (2011) was adopted;

President's job rating one year from election lower than five of past six presidents at same time

NEW YORK, Oct. 20, 2011

NEW YORK, Oct. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- One year from now the country will be in the final days of the 2012 presidential campaign. Most likely the final debates will have been held and the two candidates will be on their final campaign trips wooing undecided voters. President Obama will be trying to move on to a second term and one of the Republicans will be trying to stop that. However, the President is heading into this year-long campaign with only one-third of Americans (33%) giving the job he is doing positive ratings while two-thirds (67%) give him negative marks. This is almost unchanged from last month when 32% gave him positive ratings and 68% gave him negative ones.

These are some of the results of The Harris Poll of 2,463 adults surveyed online between October 10 and 17, 2011 by Harris Interactive.

Looking back

Going back to The Harris Poll Vault, we can take a look to see what the ratings of other presidents were one year before they attempted to win a second term. Only one, Jimmy Carter had lower ratings with 25% of Americans giving him positive marks while three-quarters (74%) gave him negative ratings.
