One Village, One Cinema. Why Not?"

"Most of the world is without a cinema hall. That will all change! One village, one cinema. Why not?"

~Anthony Tate, Virgina, U.S.A.

As much as we appreciate the revival of the movie theatre culture in Nigeria with thanks to the Silverbird Cinemas and Genesis Deluxe Cinemas, we would be happier to use cinemas to break social class barriers and build bridges of unity among communities for the common benefit of the society and not to pander to the aristocratic tastes of the rich minority in Nigeria to the detriment of the poor majority.

Cinema has never been an elitist medium of communication.
Cinema is a tool for public entertainment and enlightenment and has been very effective and imperative in mass literacy campaigns in developed and developing countries for decades. Cinemas made Hollywood the film capital of the world buoyed by over 38,605 indoor screens in 5,561 sites and 628 Drive-In screens in 381 sites in the US, the largest in the world.

Presently in Nigeria movie theatres have become elitist centres in upscale urban zones with the two major cinema chains operating from shopping malls and charging exorbitant gate fees and selling refreshment at inflated prices, thus making cinemas only for the middle class and upper class communities where a date at the cinema in Nigeria will cost over $20, the equivalent of N3, 00 - N4, 000, per person. But it was no so from the early 1960, 1970s and 1980s when there were many cinema halls where movie lovers paid as little as 50 cents or 50 kobos per ticket and refreshments were sold at the normal prices on the street.

From our nationwide survey based on economic facts and social orientations, we have found that over 90% of the adult population in Nigeria cannot afford the exorbitant tickets at these luxury movie theatres and have resorted to the patronage of pirated Nollywood home videos and foreign movies openly circulated and distributed by hawkers and vendors on the street or viewed on the internet where thousands of movies are available for downloads by online distributors and pay-per-view sites or pirates. In fact the popularity of Nollywood is due to the proliferation by both online and offline legal distributors and pirates of bootleg movies. These majorities among the lower class and lower middle class of the Nigerian population are patronizing hundreds of viewing centres in their suburbs to watch the popular European soccer leagues like the English Premiership, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and the UEFA Champions League where they pay as little as 10 cents of N100 gate fee and buy refreshments at affordable prices. Therefore, providing affordable cinemas to them will receive a good reception in their respective communities.

The Open Air Cinema Foundation, Mobile Cinema Foundation and mobiCINE are breaking barriers by taking the cinemas out of elitist locations and taking mobile cinemas to the majority of the people in every community.

The Open Air Cinema Foundation specifically addresses growing technological inequity by providing ‘offline’ and underrepresented communities with the tools and training necessary to exchange their stories through local cinema screenings and regional open air film festivals.

Google, BBC, FilmAid International, UNICEF, Shine Global, ZOA and the Rwanda Cinema Center have joined as mutual partners of Open Air Cinema Foundation to produce large community screenings of educational films and documentaries for hundreds of thousands throughout Africa and Asia on current issues like women’s rights, conflict resolution and AIDS prevention. Through training and technical support we assist our partner organizations in bringing educational media to marginalized communities, creating an environment that encourages social interaction using memorable films and natural settings.

These efforts have proved extremely successful within villages and refugee camps in Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, & Tanzania. OACF’s inflatable screen technology has been used to educate hundreds of thousands in refugee camps on current issues like women’s rights and AIDS prevention. The systems are simple enough to set up and use for small events with a few people, yet large enough to accommodate gatherings of several thousand people.

The following are several projects that OACF has partnered with. Through these experiences we have demonstrated the power of film as a catalyst for social change:

* FilmAid International
* MTV Exit
* Kandy International Film Festival
* UNICEF
* Shine Global and Fine Films
* Luang Prabang Film Festival
* Rwanda Cinema Center
* Buddhadasa Indapanno Archive

Open Air Cinema Foundation and other partners promoting outdoor cinemas are coming to Nigeria to support the new Screen Naija Open Air Cinema Festival to bring cinemas to the various communities from the urban areas to the suburbs and villages.

The inaugural Screen Naija Open Air Cinema Festival will be held in the spring of 2012 in Lagos.

Nigeria Police Arrest Six Journalists

13 Oct 2011 08:56 Africa/Lagos

Nigeria police arrest six journalists

NEW YORK, October 13, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Police in Nigeria arrested six journalists and one staff member from independent daily The Nation on Tuesday concerning the publication of a purported private letter from former head of state Olusegun Obasanjo to President Goodluck Jonathan about administrators of government agencies, local journalists reported.

On the front page of its October 4 edition, The Nation published a letter, allegedly written by Obasanjo, that recommended Jonathan replace five CEOs of several government agencies, news reports said. Obasanjo filed a complaint last week, accusing the newspaper of publishing the letter with a forgery of his signature, Olusola Amore, the national police spokesman, told CPJ. The Nation, widely perceived as an opposition paper, said in a statement that they stand by their story and the letter's authenticity.

On Tuesday afternoon, detectives raided The Nation offices in the commercial city of Lagos and the capital, Abuja, and arrested four editors after failing to find the publication's senior leaders, General Editor Kunle Fagbemi told CPJ. Later that day, police arrested two reporters and the newspaper's chief of security who had accompanied the editors to the Central Police Station in Lagos. None of the journalists have been charged yet.

"While we do not know if the letter was forged, we note that forgery is merely a civil offense in Nigeria. There is no reason for the former president to exert such pressure on the police to intimidate and silence journalists," said CPJ Africa Advocacy Coordinator Mohamed Keita. "Authorities should release the journalists immediately."

The journalists-Deputy Editor Lawal Ogienagbon, News Editor Dapo Olufade, reporters John Unachukwu and Dupe Olaoye-Osinkolu from the Lagos office, and Bureau Chief Yomi Odungu and Managing Editor Yusuf Ali from the Abuja office-are expected to be in court tomorrow, Amore told CPJ.

Prior to the arrests, Abuja police had requested a Nation editor, Gbenga Omotoso, reveal the source of the letter, news reports said. The paper's lawyer, Femi Falana, told police the journalist was traveling abroad and would present himself in Abuja upon his return.

"These arrests scar the country's recent positive track record of supporting press freedom," said Keita. In July, Nigeria passed a long-awaited Freedom of Information Act.

U.S. Documentary on 400th year anniversary of King James Bible

On Oct. 16, Fires of Faith: The Coming Forth of The King James Bible celebrates 400th year anniversary, capturing book's violent birth and enduring influence through historically accurate reenactments and interviews with leading scholars

PROVO, Utah, Oct. 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- BYUtv today announced that it will present and air the first U.S. television film series on the making of the King James Bible, coinciding with the 400th anniversary of its translation. Celebrated for its enduring and widespread use, the King James Bible has had immeasurable impact on religion, language, culture, art and literature. Yet the road to its influence and acceptance was paved with the horrors of humanity.

Produced and directed by filmmaker Lee Groberg, and written by screenwriter Mitch Davis, the three-part documentary and dramatic feature tells the vivid stories of international politics, intrigue, subversion, bloodshed, fire and the runaway libido of King Henry VIII that led to its creation. The King James Bible's profound impact on faith is captured through more than 130 reenactments filmed in eight different countries at many of the actual sites where events originally took place. A prestigious host of 18 international scholars and religious leaders, from the Universities of Notre Dame and Oxford to the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, reveal differing perspectives while confirming that the King James Bible's influence is like none other, and that the importance of the translation goes well beyond religion itself.

"Few milestones in history have greater influence and significance than the translation of the Bible into English," said Derek Marquis, executive producer of Fires of Faith and Managing Director of BYUtv. "We knew we couldn't let the 400th anniversary of the seminal English Bible pass without telling the story of how the King James version came to be and why it has endured. The director, writer, actors, scholars and religious leaders in our film combined to create an extraordinary chorus that transcends any one religion to truly celebrate the most influential book of all time."

Fires of Faith is rife with factual Early Modern Era drama that fictional Hollywood would struggle to concoct. Those who sought to translate "God's message" into the English vernacular were seen as heretics, persecuted and ultimately executed. At the forefront of the saga is British religious scholar William Tyndale, who was responsible for the original translations that make up more than 80 percent of the King James Bible's text. His death by strangulation and burning at the stake under King Henry VIII didn't stop his translated words from ultimately reaching a global audience and enduring to this day.

"The power of the story transcends ideological and cultural boundaries," said Mr. Groberg. "Without exception, every person who contributed to this film – regardless of their own particular beliefs or background – was inspired to help us turn back the visual clock and authentically convey the events. Being permitted to use the historic locations where the story actually took place, such as a 4th century monastery in Israel, 800 year-old English castles and 500 year-old European churches, drew in the hundreds of scholars, actors, curators and crew members who worked on the production. We focused on even the smallest details, to inspire the cast and enable the viewers to feel as if they're witnessing history.

Fires of Faith chronicles the cast of characters that were central to the Reformation, including John Wycliffe, Martin Luther, King Henry VIII and "Bloody" Queen Mary I, ultimately culminating with King James I, and his commissioned translation of the Bible. The film crisscrosses a tumultuous Europe at the birth of religious freedom during a time that seemed to consistently involve the burning of something or someone. In one corner or another, an entire continent was on fire.

Historians, theologians and actors transport audiences to an era when the Bible in English was an unlawful possession and reading it resulted in imprisonment. Translating it was a death sentence. The only way to buy one was, literally, under the table on the black market, the same way someone might buy illegal drugs today.

The film's historical narrative parallels modern day insights and influences in the third and final hour of the series, highlighting its effect on music as well people's reactions to it today.

"The phrases and rhythms of the King James Bible have worked their way into wider Anglophone sensibilities and consciousness in ways that no other translation of the Bible has achieved, nor will likely ever achieve," said Brad S. Gregory, Professor of Early Modern History, University of Notre Dame, Indiana, during his interview in the film.

"There is nothing that compares to the classical English literary resource as the King James Bible," said David Rosen, Rabbi, Chief Rabbinate of Israel during his interview in the film. "The closest thing, of course, are the works of Shakespeare and we do relish and treasure Shakespeare. But it doesn't speak to our deepest commitments, as obviously, the Bible does."

"The King James Bible has an amazing tenacity," said Alec Ryrie, Professor of the History of Christianity, Durham University, England at the conclusion of the film. "It has hung on in the affection of particular churches and of whole peoples in a way that a 400 year old text really shouldn't. I think the King James translators, themselves, would have been amazed that this 400 year old translation is still being used."

Fires of Faith: The Coming Forth of the King James Bible will premiere Oct. 16th on BYUtv, which is a U.S. and worldwide cable/satellite television channel reaching 60 million households.
