You Can't Leave It At The Office: Consequences Of Co-Worker Rudeness Are Far-Reaching

PR Newswire

WACO, Texas, Aug. 19, 2011

WACO, Texas, Aug. 19, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A co-worker's rudeness can have a great impact on relationships far beyond the workplace, according to a Baylor University study published online in the Journal of Organizational Behavior. Findings suggest that stress created by incivility can be so intense that, at the end of the day, it is taken home by the worker and impacts the well-being of the worker's family and partner, who in turn takes the stress to his/her workplace.

"Employees who experience such incivility at work bring home the stress, negative emotion and perceived ostracism that results from those experiences, which then affects more than their family life - it also creates problems for the partner's life at work," said Merideth J. Ferguson, Ph.D., assistant professor of management and entrepreneurship at the Baylor University Hankamer School of Business and study author.

"This research underlines the importance of stopping incivility before it starts so that the ripple effect of incivility does not impact the employee's family and potentially inflict further damage beyond the workplace where the incivility took place and cross over into the workplace of the partner," she said.

In addition, since the employee comes home more stressed and distracted, the partner is likely to pick up more of the family responsibilities, and those demands may interfere with the partner's work life. The study also found that such stress also significantly affected the worker's and the partner's marital satisfaction.

The study included 190 workers and their partners. Workers were employed full time, had co-workers and had an employed partner who agreed to complete an online survey. After completing the survey, workers were asked to have their partners complete a separate survey. The combined responses from the initial contact and the partner constituted one complete response in the database. Approximately 57 percent of the employee sample was male with an average age of 36, while 43 percent of the partner sample was male with an average age of 35. Of these couples, 75 percent had children living with them.

"Unlike the study of incivility's effects at work, the study of its impact on the family is in its infancy. However, these findings emphasize the notion that organizations must realize the far-reaching effects of co-worker incivility and its impact on employees and their families," Ferguson said.

"One approach to prevent this stress might be to encourage workers to seek support through their organization's employee assistance program or other resources such as counseling or stress management so that tactics or mechanisms for buffering the effect of incivility's stress on the family can be identified," she said.

The JCRC of Greater Washington Condemns Attack in Israel

PR Newswire

WASHINGTON, Aug. 18, 2011

WASHINGTON, Aug. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ The Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of Greater Washington unequivocally condemns today’s tragic attacks against innocent Israeli civilians.

In a coordinated series of terrorist attacks on Israeli targets near the southern city of Eilat Thursday, seven people were killed at least 26 people wounded. According to news reports, the first attack was a drive-by shooting targeting Egged bus 392 traveling from Be'er Sheva to the vacation destination of Eilat. When IDF forces rushed to the scene they were met with several explosive devices that were detonated alongside an IDF vehicle. Within the ensuing 30 minutes, multiple mortars and anti-tank missiles were fired from Egypt and Gaza into Israel, killing seven civilians and wounding others.

The IDF Spokesman reported that two to four terrorists were killed during the clashes. The wounded are being evacuated by IDF helicopter to hospitals in Eilat and Be'er Sheva.

This horrible act of violence raises concerns that some Palestinians continue to embrace the path of violence and that terrorists are again deliberately targeting innocent civilians.

We express dismay at this escalation of violence directed at Israeli civilians and condemn the PA’s culture of praising terrorists, which produces terrorism. This incitement must stop. We also express concern about Egypt’s weakening grip on the Sinai Peninsula and call on the Egyptian government to prevent terrorist cells from targeting Israeli civilians from Egyptian territory.

The JCRC stands in solidarity with the state of Israel in her commitment to peace and supports Israel’s right to do what is necessary to protect its citizens.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families and we pray for healing and peace in Israel.

The Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington (JCRC) is the public affairs and community relations arm of the Jewish community representing 210 Jewish organizations and synagogues throughout D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. The JCRC focuses on government relations, Israel advocacy, inter-group relations, and social justice.

Del-York International is not ripping off Ignorant Nigerians

The goal of Del-York International has always been to raise sponsorship to cover full tuition, feeding and accommodations for all participants of the training program from Nigeria's public and private sectors.

While we recognize that the price for world class training by the New York Film Academy is a shock for most Nigerians, we have been able to raise support from Local companies who are invested in building the capacity of our nation's youth in the creative industries, which was recently recognized by the World Bank to have great potential for job creation and poverty alleviation.

This year we received the generous support from our partners: NDDC, Edo State Government, Riverdrill Group, Pepsi and NAFDAC to sponsor 96% of the students currently attending the program in Lagos.

We hope that this group of students will exceed the success rate of the graduates from the 2010 training program in Abuja, where 122 of the 400 graduate are presently employed in the entertainment industry, with some on the BBC film crew, and others already creating jobs for many by opening their own production studios.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

We invite you to visit our training facilities in Isolo and observe our trans formative operations.

LOS ANGELES, August 17, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — LG Mobile today announced the upcoming release of “Thumbs”, the new texting documentary that chronicles the race to LG’s 2010 National Texting Championship. In celebration of the documentary’s television debut, LG treated audiences in New York and Los Angeles to a theatrical sneak peek of the texting exposé scheduled to premiere on MTV on Friday, August 19th at 10:00 P.M. ET/PT. Providing an exclusive look at the growing phenomenon of texting among today’s youth, the premieres brought industry influencers and texting enthusiasts together for an in-depth look at the fast- paced world of texting and its rising popularity.

THUMBS director Bill Couturié celebrates with LG National Texting Championship alums at the screening of THUMBS on August 4th in New York City.

Documenting the texting lives and habits of six teens from across the country, “Thumbs” delivers an investigative look at the elaborate world of teenage texters and the integral role mobile phones have come to play in day-to-day communication. A look into the marathon race to the 2010 LG National Texting Championship is also provided by putting viewers right in the action as players get to know their competition and ready their thumbs to compete for the crown.

“LG is proud of its texting legacy and has worked to become a pioneer in the space with its QWERTY devices and on-going programs such as the annual LG National Texting Championship,” said Carl Brown, Director of Trade Marketing for LG Mobile Phones. “Supporting the ‘Thumbs’ documentary allowed LG a unique opportunity to give today’s texters a voice while providing an up-close look at the way texting has undeniably changed the way we communicate.”

“Texting is at the heart of how MTV’s Millennial audience communicates every single day of their lives,” said Chris Linn, Executive Vice President of Programming for MTV. “‘Thumbs’ not only focuses on the competition at the LG National Texting Championship, but also takes viewers behind-the-scenes to reveal exactly how empowering and important this form of communication has become.”

“Thumbs” debuted for the first time in New York earlier this month to a crowd of local media and film industry insiders. Following the “Thumbs” New York premiere, a West Coast audience of Hollywood movers and shakers were invited to screen the documentary and attend a private reception at The Spare Room in the iconic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel where attendees were given the chance to meet the documentary’s producers and ask questions regarding the inspiration behind the film.

Kaiser/UNAIDS Study Finds Drop in Overall Disbursements

Kaiser/UNAIDS Study Finds Drop in Overall Disbursements For Aids Response in 2010, Seven Out of 15 Governments Report Reductions

PR Newswire

GENEVA and MENLO PARK, Calif., Aug. 15, 2011

GENEVA and MENLO PARK, Calif., Aug. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Funding disbursements from donor governments for the AIDS response in low- and middle-income countries fell in 2010, dropping 10% from the previous year's level, according to an annual funding analysis conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), available at http://www.kff.org/hivaids/7347.cfm.

The study found that donor governments disbursed US$ 6.9 billion in 2010 for HIV prevention, treatment, care and support -- US$ 740 million less than in 2009. The decrease was due to a combination of three main factors: actual reductions in development assistance, currency exchange fluctuations, and a slowdown in the pace of U.S. disbursements, which was not a budget cut.

Of the 15 governments surveyed, seven--Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United States--reported a year over year decrease in their disbursements as measured in their own currencies. The figures presented in the report are in US dollars, consistent with international standards and other reporting mechanisms.

Due to currency fluctuations, when measured in US dollars, Australia showed a slight increase in its AIDS funding contribution even though it contributed less in its own currency. Conversely, there was a slight decrease in Denmark's contribution despite the country's increased funding level in its own currency.

"AIDS is a smart investment even in this difficult economic environment. We have to look beyond the near-term costs and recognize the long-term benefits," said Michel Sidibe, Executive Director of UNAIDS. "Donors need to make and follow through on commitments today to reduce costs in the future."

The overall drop in disbursements was primarily attributed to a reduction in disbursements by the United States, the largest donor nation, which accounted for 54% of total donor disbursements in 2010. While the United States Congress appropriated similar levels of funding for the AIDS response in 2010 as in 2009 (approximately US$ 5.5 billion in each year), disbursements from the United States declined from US$ 4.4 billion in 2009 to US$ 3.7 billion in 2010. This slowdown stems from new requirements established by Congress for the United States President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Some funds appropriated in 2010 will be disbursed in later years.

"With U.S. funding delayed but not eliminated to this point, this year's drop in spending may be a temporary blip, though its impact on services may be real," said Drew Altman, Kaiser Family Foundation President and CEO.

To reach universal access goals towards HIV prevention, treatment, care and support, UNAIDS estimates that an investment of at least US$ 22 billion will be needed by 2015. Raising this level of funding could avert more than 12 million new HIV infections and more than seven million deaths, according to UNAIDS.

At the United Nations High Level Meeting on AIDS in June 2011, UN Member States committed to bold new targets for the AIDS response which include increasing investments for AIDS to between US$ 22-24 billion by 2015.

According to the latest estimates from UNAIDS, 34 million [30.9 million–36.9 million] people were living with HIV at the end of 2010 and nearly 30 million [25 million–33 million] have died from AIDS-related causes since AIDS was first reported 30 years ago.
