South African AIDS Film Draws Tears at Cannes World Premiere

Tears of empathy flowed copiously for heart broken Chanda, the 12 year old heroine of the South African AIDS film Life, Above All as viewers were gripped by the heartrending film Tuesday morning in the Salle Debussy at the world premiere as an official selection of the 63rd Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard category.

Allan Stratton, 59, the author of Chanda’s Secrets the young adult novel that was adapted for the film Life, Above All said he was already in tears when he saw only the rushes during the filming in South Africa.

Allan Stratton (centre) Thato Kgaladi (Soly, the boy) and Mapaseka Matheba (Iris, the girl) on the set of film Life, Above All in South Africa.

“I wrote Chanda’s Secrets to put a human face to the Sub-Saharan AIDS pandemic. It’s a visually charged story that reaches audiences of all ages. A film version, created on location by South African director Oliver Schmitz, is a dream come true,” Allan Stratton said.

Chanda’s Secrets has won many prizes since 2005, including the Africana Book Award, Michael L. Printz Honor Book award and a finalist for the Prix Sorciere of France and it has been translated into over ten languages.

Life, Above All was directed by Oliver Schmitz, the South African director whose apartheid films Mapantsula and Hijack Stories have also been screened at the Cannes in 1988 and 2001.

“I think Allan Stratton found a very good way of showing the impact of AIDS in South Africa,” said Schmitz.

“Although the main story remains the same, many little changes were made. Allan Stratton’s novel is located in Africa, but we have tried to remain very specific in terms of language and culture. For me, this sort of detail is crucial because I want to be sure that I’m faithfully representing our universal history.”

The author said he spent a month in Botswana to research for the facts.
“I knew what it felt like to lose a loved one and what AIDS panic looked like, but I did want to see what was different. In Africa, instead of attacking a subset of society, it’s attacked entire societies. Two things I didn’t expect: Internet cafés everywhere, and the joy in people. When you watch the news, you see people in postures of despair and flies buzzing around babies and glassy expressions. But the truth is that there is so much fire and laughter and joy. It made me think of how resilient people are and how, against probability, there are people who are able to grow and thrive — and that’s the story of Chanda, ”

Life, Above All was produced by German filmmaker Oliver Stoltz whose chance meeting with Allan Stratton during a reading tour in Germany in 2005 led to the film adaptation of the novel.

THE STORY:

Chanda, 16, is a smart and determined South African girl on track to win a scholarship – but she’s suddenly thrust into an impossible situation, forcing her to adopt maturity beyond her years. When we first meet her, she’s making funeral arrangements for her year-old sister, Sara. If people begin to suspect Sara’s death was due to more than a passing flu, Chanda will be faced with shame and stigma, not only for the victim, but also for their entire family.

When Lilian’s (Chanda’s mother) illness becomes impossible to hide, their nosy, eccentric next-door neighbor, Mrs. Tafa, engages a spirit doctor to perform a startling ritual. The spirit doctor determines that a curse is hanging over her and her children. In order to lift it,

Lilian must return to the village from where she was banished decades before, leaving Chanda alone to care for her siblings.

Meanwhile, Chanda’s best friend, Esther, has turned to prostitution in a desperate attempt to survive and reunite her own family. Though the community shuns Esther, Chanda refuses to reject her friend. To the horror of those around her, Chanda opens her house to Esther at her friend’s moment of greatest need. That’s just the beginning of Chanda’s fight against convention.

When Chanda discovers that her mother may have gone away to die in order to spare her children shame, she ignores the cautions of the meddling Mrs. Tafa, and embarks on a fateful journey to bring her mother home. And in doing so, challenges the people around her to reject their prejudices and embrace the truth.

R. Kelly and Soweto Spiritual Singers Set to Perform 'Sign Of A Victory' at FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony

The Uplifting Original Song Penned By Kelly Is Selected To Be The Official World Cup Anthem

NEW YORK, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- FIFA and Sony Music Entertainment announced today that "Sign Of A Victory" written and produced by R&B superstar R. Kelly has been selected as the official anthem of the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. One of three official songs for the event, the soaring ballad reflects the spirit of giving and will highlight the charitable aspect of the World Cup. R. Kelly and the Soweto Spiritual Singers will perform "Sign Of A Victory" (<-- click on link to listen) together at the opening ceremony on June 11th at the Johannesburg Soccer City Stadium. All proceeds from the song will benefit African charities including the official campaign of the 2010 FIFA World Cup "20 Centers for 2010."

"I feel blessed that 'Sign Of A Victory' was selected to be part of the 2010 FIFA World Cup," said Mr. Kelly. "The FIFA World Cup is an event that brings the world together and inspires us to be and do the best we can. It's this uplifting feeling that I tried to capture in the song."

"It's also a great honor to perform with the Soweto Spiritual Singers," he added. "They represent the best of South Africa and I'm proud to work with such a talented group." The Jive Records recording artist received a warm welcome to Africa last June, when he performed a sold-out six-concert tour in South Africa and Nigeria. The multi-Grammy-award winning star spent time with South African luminaries and was "overwhelmed by the beautiful continent."

The Soweto Spiritual Singers commented, "we share our exhilaration in working with R. Kelly on 'Sign of A Victory.' It is a testament to the talent and artistry we possess as South African artists that we can stand shoulder to shoulder with our fellow international musicians. Our experience has been overwhelming and we are highly honoured to work with R. Kelly."

The rousing song is an uplifting message of triumph and victory, combining Mr. Kelly's soulful delivery with the sweet urgency of the Soweto Spiritual Singers choir. "Sign Of A Victory" blends American R&B/Pop with African musical influences and choral chants in Zulu. The anthem is as powerful and poignant as Kelly's three-time Grammy winning classic song "I Believe I Can Fly."

The Soweto Spiritual Singers is a versatile 27-member vocal ensemble comprised of indigenous talent from Soweto. Their repertoire consists of all forms of gospel genres and traditions.

"Sign Of A Victory" will be included on Listen Up! The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album set for release on May 31/June 1 by Sony Music Entertainment. Proceeds from the album will benefit FIFA's "20 Centers for 2010" initiative, whose aim is to achieve positive social change through football by building twenty Football for Hope centers for public health, education and football across Africa, and other African charities.

The UK has Europe's Most Mature and Dynamic Online Job Market

The UK has Europe's Most Mature and Dynamic Online Job Market

BARCELONA, May 17, 2010/PRNewswire/ -- The UK is the European country with the most online vacancies per worker, with a number 6 times higher than Spain, double the vacancies of France and nearly three times as many jobs as Italy. The UK has 26 jobs per thousand workers, while France has 12, Italy 10 and Spain 4. In terms of growth, it's the country with the second highest increase in the number of jobs posted online after France.

The United Kingdom is the European country with the most mature and dynamic online job market. Even for mid-level or high-level professions, the Internet is often recruiters' first choice when it comes to finding a suitable candidate; something that is not replicated in other European countries, such as Italy. For example, in the first four months of 2010 the top four vacancies on offer were for team managers, sales, developers and technical support.

In the first four months of 2010 the number of vacancies published on the Internet increased around 10% month-on-month. The market experienced an increase of 7% from January to February, with an added increase of 10% between February and March. From March to April, the number of vacancies increased by 15%.

London centralizes around 60% of the job vacancies in the UK - in April the number of vacancies in London was ten times higher than in the second city with most offers, Manchester. The cities that complete in the top five with the most vacancies on offer are Birmingham, Liverpool and Leeds. The growth in London is an indicator of growth in the rest of the country. The growth trend, however, is not reflected in the number of offers in Leeds and Liverpool, where the number of online vacancies has decreased from February onwards.

Trovit, the leading search engine for classifieds in Europe, has a large volume of vacancies from the most important job boards and portals in eleven European countries, which allows it to compare between the different markets.

Digital Policy Council Identifies Prime Minister of Malaysia as a Role Model for Good Governance on the Net

Digital Policy Council Identifies Prime Minister of Malaysia as a Role Model for Good Governance on the Net

The Digital Policy Council latest research investigates the potential of new media technologies to advance good governance in Muslim-majority nations.

WASHINGTON, May 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Digital Policy Council (DPC), an international, non-partisan "think tank" on 21st Century Governance, has compiled some ground breaking research investigating the use of social media by heads of state and political activist within Muslim-majority nations.

The DPC is the research and public advocacy arm of Digital Daya ('digital influence'), a new generation strategic consultancy that empowers leaders in the public sectors to leverage the new media of the Internet to communicate their message, build public influence, and execute high-impact programs to reshape governance and public policy.

According to The Digital Policy Council's most recent research, there are 225 million Muslims online today and with a compound annual growth rate of 30%, that Internet population is expected to swell to one billion by 2015. Encouragingly, the research identifies many Islamic leaders who recognize the Internet and its ever growing online community as a tool for better governance, more effective citizen engagement, and highly impactful politicking.

A Role Model of Leadership

One such progressive leader is the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who strives to be connected with the people though his Facebook and Twitter accounts along with his blog www.1malaysia.com.my. Prime Minister Najib's 1Malaysia program has a goal to preserve and enhance racial unity in among the many ethnic groups that make up the diverse population of the Muslim-majority nation of Malaysia. The DPC research shows that the 1Malaysia Facebook profile has already attracted over 50,000 fans and furthermore ranks the Prime Minister among the top ten heads of state who use Twitter for citizen engagement.

Prime Minister Najib's 1Malaysia program is an assurance of new leadership for the nation and an inspirational model on next generation governance for the Islamic World.

Malaysia is regarded as a role model in the governance of Islamic banking and finance holding $86 billion in banking assets, 152 fund managers, and 63% of the global sukuk ('Islamic bond') market. Similarly, Malaysia commands a pivotal leadership role in the governance of the Islamic Halal certifications for food and consumer products establishing a globally recognized trust mark and the standard to beat for this trillion dollar industry.

Malaysia has also played as a bridge between the Islamic World and the West; moreover with Prime Minister Najib's productive bi-lateral talks with the U.S. President in Washington D.C. there is a growing recognition of Malaysia as an "increasingly successful nation".

At a time when governments around the world desperately need new solutions to deal with the immense challenges of social unrest and "citizen engagement", there is a window of opportunity for Malaysia to similarly take the pole position on 21st Century governance to provide the leadership necessary to deal with the many important aspects of social changes that will affect both Malaysia and the rest of the Islamic world in the near future.

Press Conference by Commander of European Union Anti-Piracy Naval Force off Somalia Coast — Operation Atalanta

15 May 2010 11:28 Africa/Lagos

Press Conference by Commander of European Union Anti-Piracy Naval Force off Somalia Coast — Operation Atalanta

MOGADISHU, May 15, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- While pirate attacks in the Gulf of Aden had fallen from 20 per month in the summer of 2009, to between 4 and 5 today, the tenacity of pirates and level of their violence against mariners had changed over the years, said Rear Admiral Peter Hudson, Operations Commander of the European Union Naval Force in Somalia (EU NAVFOR) — Operation Atalanta, expressing hope that other countries would share in the asset-sapping task of combating the problem.

At a Headquarters press conference, Mr. Hudson said European forces protected humanitarian aid arriving to Somalia on World Food Programme (WFP) vessels, ensured supply of African Union logistics lines into Mombasa, Kenya, and protected the 30,000 or so ships that passed annually through the Gulf of Aden, among the world's busiest trade arteries. Over the last six months, 32 WFP ships had been escorted into Somalia, delivering 350,000 tons of food to displaced persons. African Union troops had been safeguarded, and European forces had partnered with companies to provide security advice and coordinate activity.

In the Gulf of Aden, ship seizures — which had numbered nearly 25 in 2008 — had led to various Security Council resolutions and involved naval forces from China, the Russian Federation and Japan, he explained. Work in the Somali Basin was organized around monsoon season. Usually, the period between February and May saw a huge surge in the number of vessels put to sea for piracy. This year, European forces had dismantled over 60 pirate groups and processed some 400 suspects — three times the number seen last year.

As there were not many avenues for prosecution, he said European forces must destroy equipment and ensure that suspects were returned home. “It's a long progress,” he said, noting that work was done through cooperation, dialogue with industry and, from a European Union perspective, a comprehensive political and military solution to piracy problems in Somalia.

Fielding a question on Somali pirates set adrift in the Gulf of Aden after an attempted attack on a Russian vessel, Mr. Hudson called that type of situation challenging. Some occasions were appropriate for such action. The experience of the Russian vessel was not without precedent, he said, citing similar instances involving Dutch and Danish ships. He could not comment on the individual operation, but, from European Union perspective, ensuring that the pirates were treated appropriately would be at the forefront of any operation.

To a critique that international forces had not paid sufficient attention to illegal fishing, he said such concerns were often aired as justification for piracy. The European forces' joint action plan had been amended so that fishing vessels were identified 200 miles off the Somali coast, and that such information would be relayed. He did note, however, that very little fishing activity had been seen inside 200 miles of the Somali coast, whether by Japanese or Spanish boats, or by local subsistence fishing communities.

To a question on how many captured pirates had been released, he said that, of 400 captured over about three months, 40 had gone on to prosecution.

Asked how equipped the European forces were to collect evidence, especially in the push to prosecute people, he said the heart of the matter involved ensuring that institutions were prepared to exercise their duties. Not many European States were prepared to bring pirates back for prosecution and he was grateful for the efforts by Kenya and the Seychelles in that regard. European forces worked to ensure that any evidential package prepared was in line with what institutions could handle.

Responding to a query on the latest tactics, he said pirates were tenacious and fearless, as travelling 600 or 700 miles off the Somali coast took courage. Generally, between 60 and 70 pirate groups would flood an area. They had seized a significant number of Taiwanese fishing vessels, which he suspected would be used to launch other attacks. They had adapted and refined their methods, allowing them more flexibility on the high seas.

Moreover, he said that pirates were often only 14 or 15 years old. The allure of lucrative, life-changing ransom money was attractive. He had come across many pirate ships that were in mechanical failure and a perilous humanitarian situation, and who actually had to be rescued.

Asked about any interviews conducted with former captives, he said the European forces worked with major merchant trade organizations and international chambers of shipping to ensure that, when vessels were released, the events of the attack could be recorded. That dialogue was important to European and other maritime forces.

To a question on the level of humanitarian aid into Somalia, he said the Al‑Shabaab insurgent group had forced WFP to scale back its activities. WFP shipments had to travel north from the WFP distribution centre in Mombasa and the European forces were trying to work with the flag States of ships taking part, perhaps in placing military forces on humanitarian vessels.

As for Kenya's decision to stop prosecuting pirates, he said those pirates transferred to Kenya over the last year continued to be processed. Brussels had a team in the region and the High Representative of the European Union would tour both Kenya and the Seychelles, among other places, to discuss that issue.
