ECOWAS to hold extra-ordinary summit in Abuja on Saturday, 17th October 2009

ABUJA, October 14, 2009/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- An extra-ordinary summit of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government will take place on Saturday, 17th October 2009 in Abuja to discuss the political and security situations in Guinea and Niger.

The summit will specifically consider the recommendations of the International Contact Group on Guinea (ICG-G) which ended its day-long meeting in Abuja on Monday, 12th October 2009.

Among others, the Group called for the creation of a new transitional authority, through dialogue if possible, as well as the withdrawal of the National Council for Democracy and Development (CNDD) in other to ensure a short and peaceful transition marked by the conduct of credible, free and fair elections in which those holding key executive positions demonstrate total neutrality throughout the electoral process.

The Heads of State will also consider the report of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council which met in Abuja on 24th August 2009 as well as the report of the findings of a four-member ad-hoc ministerial committee led by Nigeria and composed of Benin, Burkina Faso and Sierra Leone, which visited Niger shortly after the Council's deliberations in Abuja.

The committee was mandated to work with all political stakeholders in Niger, including the National Council for Dialogue, towards the restoration of dialogue and consensus which characterized the political environment before the current constitutional crisis.

Ana Tzarev Gallery Presents Grace of Africa

Exhibition Dates: October 15 - December 19 Exhibition Opening Reception Thursday, October 15th 6:00 - 8:00PM

NEW YORK, Oct. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ana Tzarev Gallery (http://www.anatzarev.com/) is featuring an exhibition of paintings based on the artist Ana Tzarev's extensive travels throughout Africa. Ana Tzarev has spent time in numerous regions across the continent. Her interest in African history and culture is reflected in a series of regal portraits, vibrant market scenes, energetic dance ceremonies and colorful scenes of daily life. In her travels Ana Tzarev also witnessed the challenges of war, disease and famine and these encounters are reflected in her powerful images of suffering women and children. This exhibition celebrates the grace, beauty and resilience of the African people in a remarkable body of work that expresses the artist's heartfelt connection and respect.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20091014/NY92380 )

As seen in Fish Seller, 1999, Ana Tzarev presents daily life in African villages with warmth and familiarity capturing the bounty of fruits, vegetables, fish and other fare offered at Africa's local markets in her colorful, graphic style. These works combine Tzarev's passion for the land with the gentleness of everyday life.

Ana Tzarev has journeyed to some of the most remote parts of Africa and studied local customs in depth. She has been invited to witness important ceremonies that are rarely seen by travellers, some of these are documented in her series of dance paintings. The exhibition also includes a group of paintings of African masks which Ana Tzarev interprets in a two-dimensional abstract style, capturing the individual spirit of each mask. Starvation, genocide and AIDS plague the continent of Africa, and many people struggle with the consequences of these trials. Ana Tzarev addresses the issues of starvation, genocide and AIDS by depicting determination and strength in the faces of those fighting for survival without denying the realities of the situation. The painting Devastation, 1996, is a powerful example of this series of works.

The Ana Tzarev Gallery:

The Ana Tzarev Gallery features the work of the artist Ana Tzarev as well as presenting special exhibitions of works by other artists consistent with Ana Tzarev's commitment to cultural awareness and social consciousness. For more information please visit http://www.anatzarev.com/.

Publish2

The Online Journalism Awards have been fairly good at recognizing the work of some smaller or new sites over the years but the results announced at the crowded awards dinner at the San Francisco Hilton this weekend had a different aura. Yes, the New York Times won a couple, including general excellence for a large site, and so did BBC News (breaking news, large site); LATimes.com for its Hero Complex blog, (commentary/blogging, large site); Washington Post Digital (multimedia feature, large site); NPR.org’s Planet Money (topical reporting, large site) and Slate V (video, large site). But the rest were spread among a fascinating mix that showed good work is being done by startups and established sites with various levels of resources and goals. It wasn’t an accident: this year’s awards included new categories and new ways to recognize sites to expand the reach and the impact. The full list is here. Some examples below:
Publish2, the collaborative tools startup founded by Scott Karp, won the inaugural Gannett (NYSE: GCI) Foundation Award for technical innovation in the service of digital journalism—and a $5,000 check to go with the acrylic trophy.
—Another new award for community collaboration went to Next Door Media for MyBallard, the first of its five hyperlocal sites. Next Door Media is run by journalists Kate and Cory Bergman. and recently announced a partnership with the Seattle Times. (Kate is working with Next Door Media full time while Cory, one of our friends from Lost Remote, is still at msnbc.com.)
—Hyperlocal Gotham Gazette won for general excellence, micro site, a new size for that category.
Muckety,a site that looks at news through the prism of relationships and connections, was recognized for outstanding use of digital technologies, small site. NYTimes.com won the same category, large site, for its “super groundbreaking” interactive graphics.
—High-profile startups Pro Publica and The Daily Beast each won. The nonprofit investigative startup won for general excellence, medium site, recognized both for its own work and for helping other journalists. Just ending its first year, Tina Brown’s Daily Beast won for Christopher Buckley’s commentary and was a finalist for general excellence.
—Spanish site SOITU.ES won last year—its first in operation—for general excellence, non-English small site, and this year in the same category as a large site. The site blends original content and aggregated news/features with community engagement and tech tools. This year’s small site winner was Radio Azattyq, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty’s Kazakh Service, which stood up to the Kazakh government over censorship attempts.
The Chauncey Bailey Project, a two-year-old task force investigating the murder of the Bay Area journalist, led to the indictment of two men and the resignation of the Oakland chief of police. It won the Knight Award for Public Service and investigative journalism, small site.

Lily Allen & her Panthers Win as Q is Named Cover of the Year

Lily Allen & her Panthers Win as Q is Named Cover of the Year

LONDON, October 13/PRNewswire/ --

- With Photo

Battling it out against the UK's publishing elite, Q has snatched the honour of overall winner in coveted awards The Maggies. Q has beaten some of the year's very best covers, including a naked Beth Ditto fronting Love and US president Barack Obama looking out from Time magazine, to clinch the top spot.

Category winners:

Overall Winner - Q (April 2009)
Business & General Interest Winner - Geographical (January 2009)
Celebrity & Entertainment Winner - Q (April 2009)
Fashion Winner - Love (February 2009)
Lifestyle Winner - Clash (April 2009)
Specialist & Hobbies Winner - BBC History (November 2008)
Sports & Men's Winner - Huck (June 2009)

"Lily Allen is hardly under-exposed, so it was essential for us to come up with something that was both striking and unique. Fortunately for us, Lily whole-heartedly bought into the concept and in doing so helped turn a good idea in theory into a great idea in practise."

"Patently no one would let us put a pop star within three feet of a man-eating big cat, so an 18-foot high cage separated Lily - and the Q team - from them, and the magic of digital photography put them together. That said, when Lily is in full flow, she could probably do more damage than a pair of panthers."

Over 30,000 people voted for their favourite covers during the four-week period, after a panel of industry and celebrity judges including twice-voted 'Magazine Editor of the Year' Peter Jackson, Media Week Editor Steve Barrett, model and actress Linda Lusardi and Heart Radio's Toby Anstis, narrowed down the entries into the short list.

Judging panel chairman, Jim Bilton, said, "A stunning image, strong cover lines with clear typography and an excellent "greatest" list prominently highlighted all adds up to a winning cover creatively and commercially, producing one of the highest copy sales of the year. Lily wasn't a core artist for the Q readership and had heavy media coverage at the time. The solution - add panthers and a creative photo shot - produced a truly memorable result which is our favourite cover this year!"

The Maggies campaign raised over GBP6,000 for children's charity, Rays of Sunshine.

President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize Viewed Positively in 62 Percent of Twitter Messages

Attensity Analyzes Sentiment Expressed in 25,000 Tweets

PALO ALTO, Calif., Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Attensity(TM) Group, the leader in business user applications that generate value from unstructured data, has released its analysis of public reaction to today's award of the Nobel Peace Prize to President Barack Obama. The surprise announcement created a huge flutter on the Twitter micro-blogging site, resulting in thousands of postings.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20091009/SF90593)

Using Attensity Cloud, the newest product addition to Attensity's semantic analysis application suite, 25,000 discussion-oriented messages, or "tweets," were pulled from Twitter. All 25,000 tweets were then analyzed by Attensity's Voice of the Customer (VoC) solution, using Attensity's social media domain. Results were created using Attensity's out-of-the-box Sentimetrics analysis. Findings include:

Sentiment in Twitter towards President Obama's win of the Nobel Peace Prize:

-- 8 percent extremely positive
-- 54 percent positive
-- 2 percent neutral
-- 34 percent negative

-- 2 percent extremely negative

In addition to overall sentiment, Attensity also analyzed tweets to determine whether people felt President Obama deserved the Nobel Prize, with these results:

-- 54 percent felt he did deserve the Prize
-- 30 percent questioned whether he deserved the Prize

-- 16 percent felt he did not deserve the Prize at all

Attensity's VOC solution assigned a Sentimetrics Score(TM) of 64 to the sentiment associated with President Obama winning the Nobel Prize. The Sentimentric Score is an Attensity proprietary calculation that enables organizations to track sentiment movement over time. It takes into account and weighs sentiment by degrees of sentiment, and is then normalized based on the number of sentiment-based facts found by Attensity's VOC solution.

To view the pie chart analysis, go to Attensity's web site: http://www.attensity.com/en/ObamaPeacePrize.html

"We expected there to be a great deal of buzz generated by the announcement of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, but today's surprise designation of President Obama caused a tremendous flapping of wings in the 'Twittersphere,'" said Michelle de Haaff, chief marketing officer of Attensity Group. "It's rather interesting that there were so few Extreme Negatives, but perhaps that provides insight into the age and politics of Twitter's user base."

Barack Obama Humbled and Challenged by Nobel Peace Prize

Barack Obama Humbled and Challenged by Nobel Peace Prize

The news of winning the Nobel Peace Prize came as a surprise to President Barack Obama, but he has seen it as a challenge to take up the mantle of a peacemaker and not a war monger and a wake up call in the nation building of a New America in the leadership of the world.

The following is a copy of his call to action addressed to all those on his mailing list.

Oct 9 (17 hours ago)

Michael Chima --

This morning, Michelle and I awoke to some surprising and humbling news. At 6 a.m., we received word that I'd been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009.

To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.

But I also know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes.

That is why I've said that I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations and all peoples to confront the common challenges of the 21st century. These challenges won't all be met during my presidency, or even my lifetime. But I know these challenges can be met so long as it's recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone.

This award -- and the call to action that comes with it -- does not belong simply to me or my administration; it belongs to all people around the world who have fought for justice and for peace. And most of all, it belongs to you, the men and women of America, who have dared to hope and have worked so hard to make our world a little better.

So today we humbly recommit to the important work that we've begun together. I'm grateful that you've stood with me thus far, and I'm honored to continue our vital work in the years to come.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama
