My great father of blessed memory, Sunday "Sunny" Eke loved going to cinemas almost daily, because he loved movies; especially #Hollywood western cowboys movies of Clint Eastwood and John Wayne, war films and #Bollywood movies such as "Sholay" and "Seeta aur Geeta" and I loved the Bollywood legends; Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini,, Dharmendra Singh Deol , Sanjeev Kumar and lest I forget the most celebrated nautch dancer in Hindi romantic films, Helen Anne Richardson Khan.  My father never sat down to watch any movie on TV. He would just glance at the popular Bonanza western cowboys series and Combat series on World War 2.

"Sholay", "Seeta aur Geeta" and "Love in Tokyo" were among my father's most loved Bollywood movies and even as a little boy in the 1970s, I had a crush on Hema Malini and I fancied myself as Amitabh Bachchan. I thought Amitabh Bachchan and Hema would end up as husband and wife in real life. 

I have forgotten the title  of my favourite Amitabh Bachchan's film. His poor mother was working at a construction site of a high rise building where she fell and was badly injured. He was a struggling poet and had to an emotional TV interview by the woman who loved him, but was with another man.  

I wish to meet Amitabh and Hema one fine day.

Christy Essien, Nigeria's Queen of Soul has Passed On

Nigeria has lost one of her greatest women, the "Queen of Soul", Christy Uduak Essien-Igbokwe, who passed away at about 9.15a.m. Thursday at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Lagos.

Popularly known by her maiden name Christy Essien before she got married, she was a great singer who was like a sister to millions of her fans in Nigeria.

She was the first Nigerian Queen of Soul music admired and loved by millions of music lovers in Nigeria and other countries.

I have been one of her countless fans since her successful acting career as a colourful TV actress in the popular TV comedy series Masquerade of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), playing the drama queen as "Apeno", the wife of "Jegede", played by the late Claude Eke.
The television series was created by James Iroha who played the role of "Gringory", one of the houseboys of "Chief Zebrudaya Okoroigwe Nwogbo, alias 4:30." played by Chika Okpala.

Christy Uduak Essien-Igbokwe was born on the 11th November, 1960, Her talents as an actress and singer were discovered in her teenage years in secondary school, acting and singing at various clubs until she passed the audition for one of the leading roles in the Masquerade in 1976. Christy was an instant hit and became a household name in Nigeria. In 1977 at only 17, she began her professional musical career and released several top selling albums and her 1981 hit album "Ever Liked My Person" produced by Lemmy Jackson was rated the best.

She was the first female President of Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN) and the Chairman and Managing Director of Soul Train Entertainment Limited. She was honoured with many laurels incuding the Nigerian Lady of Songs award, Africa Music Mother award, International Special Achievement award in Mexico, World Song Festival Award in Los Angeles, Queen of Music International award, Association of Theatre Arts Practitioners award and Outstanding Achievement in Female Uplifting award.

Award Winning Educational Hip Hop Program Killed by Budget Cuts

One of the nation's first programs to bring full-time Hip Hop education to high school students seeks new partners after financial crisis terminates its 5-year run

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 22, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Since 2006, The Global Awareness through Hip Hop Culture program has been at the forefront of legitimizing the use of Hip Hop culture in mainstream education. Based at a charter school in South Los Angeles, it has been one of the only educational Hip Hop programs in the nation offered as a regular class to middle and high school students. Sadly, due to ever-increasing budget cuts, the program will no longer have a home come June 2011.

Sebastien Elkouby, the program's founder, created this class to address the educational crisis that affects about 50 percent of inner-city students across the U.S. He says, "For a variety of reasons, many students feel completely disconnected from the traditional educational process. This class uses the positive elements of Hip Hop culture that aren't usually promoted in mainstream media as a medium to develop critical thinking skills while teaching them language arts, social studies, and life skills."

For the past two years, Elkouby watched budget cuts terminate programs nationwide and suspected that his program would eventually suffer a similar fate. "I can't expect my program to be safe when thousands of teachers across the country are receiving pink slips. When it comes down to choosing between a Hip Hop class and a science class, it doesn't take a genius to figure out who's getting the ax first, no matter how enriching my program has proven to be."

During its run, the program experienced great success. Elkouby says, "We've achieved a lot. We've had Hip Hop legends like MC Lyte and KRS-ONE as guests. We've sent kids to DJ retreats. We've been awarded state-of-the-art studio equipment. We've received international media coverage and been featured in documentaries ... and this doesn't even cover a third of what we've achieved. But what I'm most proud of is the impact that the program has had on the students. For hundreds of them, this class has been life-changing."

Former student A. Dominguez says, "Taking this class has made me realize how much I have changed as an individual and has given me the hope to pursue my wildest dreams. Everyone should be able to participate in such a life-changing experience!"

In 2007, Elkouby began working with the International Visitors Council of Los Angeles, advising educators from around the world on how to use Hip Hop culture as an educational medium. In 2008, the National Society of High School Scholars selected Elkouby as "Educator of Distinction." Unfortunately, this wasn't enough to prevent the program from being terminated.

Elkouby is hopeful that the program will find a new home. "It doesn't even have to be offered at a school," he says. "I'm open to bringing the program wherever the need is. I know that there's money available to fund creative programs. We just have to find it. Who knows? It may even come from someone in the Hip Hop community."

Sexploitation is common on the street, radio and TV as parents and guardians either watch helplessly as their impressionable sons and daughters engage and indulge in immoral acts at parties where psychedelic music promoting sexual abuse is played and pornographic music videos are given regular airtime on TV. 90% of the most rotated programmes on Nigerian TV are musical shows with uncensored music videos showing half naked girls dancing wildly for young men dressed in suits or fashionable apparels ranting or lip-synching about their lust for sex. You wonder why girls would love to dance half naked for fully dressed men. Over 90% of the ditties and music videos of the so called Nigerian hip-hop artistes display impressionable school girls or call girls who portray themselves as sex objects without inhibitions and scruples and these immoral acts of carnality are seen as normal by the younger ones. They spend more time imitating these wayward role models and no wonder over 98% of them flunk their exams and the graduates among them are unemployable, because of poor academic performance.


Where are their parents?
Their parents have given up, and preferred to compete for status symbols and social class trophies of the Joneses of the primitive upper class in Nigeria. In fact, mothers have been known to act as pimps for their daughters. Majority of the poor parents even encourage their daughters to use sex to make ends meet for their families. One woman encouraged her most beautiful daughter who sponges on randy men to sleep with a rich married man for cash.


What is the government doing about the crisis?
The Nigerian government is corrupt and in fact caused the breakdown of law and order in the society as public officials misappropriated public funds with their accomplices in the private sector and have been using their ill-gotten wealth to seduce, oppress and suppress the poor masses who are their regular suppliers of servants and low income workers and their daughters are the cheap sex partners of the corrupt rulers who patronize the clubs in the red light districts of Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Warri, Uyo, Calabar, Owerri, Asaba, Onitsha and other hotbeds of prostitution. They are also the ones promoting campus prostitution or using their pretty and sexy female bank workers for marketing to seduce and sleep with rich men to lure them to patronize their banks.


Immorality is the root of the rot in the country. Most of the corrupt people are shameless and unrepentant. So, the solution is the eradication of corruption at all levels. Behavior change is going to be difficult, but the family and the government must address the dangers of pornographic entertainment online and offline, by the strict regulation of censorship. X-rated movies, music and other X-rated publications must be checked and controlled in private and public places. Moral education must be taught and good and noble family values and virtues must be the order of life.


Checking immorality and corruption is the solution for the control and prevention of the spread of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria and save our youths from wasting their lives. This is the only way we can secure the future of Nigeria.

I was in Rwanda from September 2002 to July 2003 for the primary mission of music evangelism. However I was able to work in a church as a Music Director, Youth Leader, Prayer Coordinator and Minister.

I was also given the opportunity to teach at the Adventist University of Central Africa (AUCA) Rwanda as a music teacher. I taught in English through an interpreter, because the school’s language of study is French.

At the Rwanda Music Academy, I led a team of Youth and members of the choir to Gisozi Genocide Memorial Centre, Kigali: where the remains of 800,000 Rwanda's Tutsis and Hutu who were slaughtered in the terrible genocide of 1994 were buried with their bones displayed as well. It was a shocking moment for me such that I could not eat well as I was emotionally disturbed for over five days.
The scars of the Rwanda genocide cannot be easily wiped out of a loving heart.

Every April, during the memorial of the genocide, the documentary of the killings is relayed on television and I saw many people who were traumatically affected and would end up in hospitals, because they could not imagine the cruel ways their children, husbands, wives and relations were “macheted”.

Bella Naija and Linda Ikeji have addressed this in the so called Dr. Reuben Abati vs. Banky W debate. Many of the ignorant artistes called it the generation gap between them and Reuben Abati's generation.

My own primary concern is the negative images of our young women in their musical videos. Their lyrics are shallow and they rush to the studios to voice-over already recorded sounds and music lifted from a software synthesizer. Most of them do not even know the rudiments of Music and they just Lip-synch to synthesize and synchronize to the dubbed music. Finis. What's next?Oya, omoge shake ya booty musical video is made and then they bribe the local DJs and VJs to play their music and videos showing shamless girls and women as sex objects.
No wonder the cases of HIV/AIDS are increasing among Nigerian girls and women when they are decreasing in America.

Are there no positive images of dignified Nigerian girls and women to show in musical videos?Must you use them as sex objects to sell your music!
Don't you have enough brains to compose sensible lyrics and produce good music like Asa?

Michael Jackson Has Gone

Michael Jackson (August 29, 1958–June 25, 2009).


Yesterday was one of the saddest days in America since 9/11 in 2001 and the catastrophe of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans on August 29, 2005, when the shocking news of the sudden death of the awesome Michael Jackson shook the United States of America and echoed all over the rest of the world within seconds. Hope Obioma Opara, the Publisher of Supple magazine woke me up at about 2 am Nigerian time to break the sad news to me in tears. His younger brother Outragiouz, a Nigerian Hip-hop artiste based in America had called him to tell him that MJ was no more among the living mortals on earth. I felt feverish and sat up in bed and could no longer sleep.
It could be a hoax, I said to Hope.
No Mike, Michael is dead! He said.
Hope is a fanatic of MJ since his teens and in fact his parents stopped him from going to America to prevent him from following in the footsteps of his idol.
We kept vigil to mourn MJ and listened to more news on him on the radio.

As we are still mourning Michael Jackson, then the news of the death of Farrah Fawcett, (February 2, 1947 — June 25, 2009) hit me this morning. She was one of my favourite actresses of all time and one of the most celebrated pin-up sex symbols on TV. What a weekend of sorrows in America.

Michael Jackson was phenomenal and like Elvis Presley who was the indisputable King of Rock 'n' Roll, Michael Jackson was the first King of Pop Music and there can never be another Michael Jackson.

Farewell in eternity, Michael Jackson.

'Come Out' Album's Message: God Loves You Just as Gay as You Are

LOS ANGELES, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Gospel singer and an out lesbian member of clergy in the Gospel Truth Music Ministry (http://www.rizigospel.com/), the Rev. Rizi Nasele Timane' is unveiling her new album "Come Out," a collection of original songs that call for full human rights for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. As part of the album's promotion, Timane' is touring the United States during the summer of 2009.


The album's title song challenges the fundamentalist notion that God and the Bible condemn homosexuality and strives to educate the public about what the Bible really says and does not say about homosexuality. "I have extensively studied the Greek and Hebrew translations of the Bible, and I found that, when interpreted properly, the Bible does not condemn homosexuality at all," stated Timane'.


"I'm the first out lesbian reverend and gospel singer from Nigeria, West Africa," Timane' continued. "I was one of the first people to identify as openly gay in homophobic Africa, and I know firsthand how that rejection translates to drug addiction and suicide." According to the Massachusetts 2006 Youth Risk Survey, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. Additionally, San Francisco State University's Chavez Center Institute has found that LGBTQ youth who come from a rejecting family are up to nine times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers because of the negative treatment endured.


"For LGBT persons, this painful struggle with religion or spirituality and sexuality is responsible for depression, low self-esteem, drug addiction, self-abuse, isolation and the entering into of false heterosexual marriages," said Timane'. "Worst of all, it's responsible for thousands of suicides each year in the LGBT community, especially amongst our teens and young adults. It is my hope to put a stop to these negative traits and suicides by re-educating our community."


"Anti-LGBT arguments like the one contending that California's Proposition 8 ensures children's wellbeing by providing them with a mother and father are totally absurd. In the case of Proposition 8, the state's laws permit adoption by gay and lesbian parents as well as single parents and even allows courts to assign a single grandparent, aunt, uncle or even a non-blood relative to be a child's guardian or caregiver," continued Timane'.


"The goal of my new album is to enable any LGBT person seeking God to know that God loves them just as gay as they are," states Timane'. She also wants to help those who are struggling with their spirituality and sexuality, just as she did for many years, to finally find complete reconciliation and affirmation.

Berry Gordy always learned from all his experiences and applied them to his business. He put the tedious time he spent working on the assembly line at Detroit's Lincoln-Mercury automobile plant to good use: "Every day I watched how a bare metal frame, rolling down the line would come off the other end, a spanking brand new car. What a great idea! Maybe, I could do the same thing with my music. Create a place where a kid off the street could walk in one door, an unknown, go through a process, and come out another door, a star." That little thought that came to him while running up and down that assembly line became a reality we now know as "Motown."
When Motown was housed in its famed "Hitsville U.S.A." offices at 2648 West Grand Boulevard in Detroit, it was not just a location; history would be made there. In fact, Berry Gordy created a twenty-four hour hit-making and artist development factory, nurturing the artistic talent of the singers, writers, producers, as well as, corporate executives. Today, Motown is not only the greatest pop music hit factory ever heard, but an institution, a state of mind, a way of life, a style, the "Sound of Young America." The distinctive, upbeat and uplifting music brought together pop and soul, white and black, old and young, like never before and continues to this day. Regardless of race or social background, teenage girls admired Diana Ross and teenage boys pretended to be Smokey Robinson. Motown became the heartbeat of American pop music. With multi-platinum artists ranging from the Miracles, Temptations, Four Tops and Supremes to Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and Jackson 5, the House That Gordy Built had and has no rival. Motown was the first African-American-owned record label to reach widespread national acclaim, Motown broke down racial prejudice by becoming the most successful independent record company in history and the most successful African-American owned business in America.

After Gordy purchased that first Detroit property, he converted the garage into a small recording studio and the kitchen into the control room. The company's first signing was the Miracles, led by Smokey Robinson, and its first release was Marv Johnson's "Come to Me," January 21, 1959. But its first major hit was Barrett Strong's "Money (That's What I Want)," a song co-written by Gordy himself, which reached #2 on Billboard's R&B chart in 1960. A year later, the Miracles would score the company's first million seller with "Shop Around." That same year, teen girl group the Marvelettes landed the company's first pop No. 1, "Please Mr. Postman," while the label signed two young groups, the Supremes and the Temptations. Within three years, those two groups would lead Motown into the mainstream, when the Supremes launched an unprecedented string of five consecutive No. 1 hits, starting with "Where Did Our Love Go," while the Temptations released the eternal Motown classic, "My Girl." In 1968 the company had five records out of the Top 10 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart and accomplished another unprecedented feat by seizing the top three spots for a full month.

Upon his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, Motown's founder was given the following tribute: "Gordy endeavored to reach across the racial divide with music that could touch all people, regardless of the color of their skin. Under his tutelage, Motown became a model of black capitalism, pride and self-expression and a repository for some of the greatest talent ever assembled at one company… Motown's stable of singers, songwriters, producers and musicians took the concept of simple, catchy pop songs to a whole new level of sophistication and, thanks to the music's roots in gospel and blues, visceral intensity… After Motown, black popular music would never again be dismissed as a minority taste… Aesthetically no less than commercially, Motown's achievements will likely remain unrivaled and untoppable."
