Idris Elba To Build Film Studios in Ghana To Attract Hollywood

Famous British actor and director, Idris Elba recently met with the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House, during his visit to Ghana.

During the meeting with the President of Ghana discussed building a film studio in the country. 

He also urged the president to create favorable policies for filmmakers to thrive. 

He noted that he has plans to shoot a movie in Ghana. 

In a video from their meeting that has gone viral on social media, Idris Elba was seen pitching the idea of establishing a film studio in the west African country.

He noted that there is a lot of filmmaking potential that the lack of facilities has stifled. He also spoke about the importance of government policies in boosting the film sector in Africa.

“We’ve studied the models of obviously South Africa’s incredible incentive package, and around Europe, obviously, Greece, Morocco, these are all places where they realize the value of the filmmaking dollar and have brought that policy into play,” he said to the Ghanaian president.

Idris Alba during a meeting with the President of Ghana discussed building a film studio in the country.

He noted that he has plans to shoot a movie in Ghana. 

The blockbuster actor revealed that he has a movie he is currently shooting and would love to shoot some parts of that movie in Ghana. He disclosed that pre-production is set for August, and principal photography would begin in December.

It is baffling how Nigerian news media and their news reporters will continue to peddle falsehood on "Elesin Oba, The King's Horseman" being the first film adaptation of one of the works of Prof. Wole Soyinka.

The colourful film adaptation of "Death and the King's Horseman", one of the most popular plays of Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, based on a real incident that took place in Nigeria during the British colonial era: the horseman of a Yoruba King was prevented from committing ritual suicide by the colonial authorities is erroneously being reported as the first film adaptation of one of his literary works. 

So what of the previous film adaptations of Soyinka's plays and autobiography? 

"Kongi's Harvest" of 1970 directed by Ossie Davis and produced by Francis Oladele, Lennart Bern

“Ake: The Years of Childhood” by Mr Dapo Adeniyi; 2016

"Sidi Ilunije", the film adaptation of "The Lion and the Jewel" by Tunde Kelani in 2017.

When Mo Abudu, the producer of the film said "Elesin Oba" is the first film adaptation of Prof. Wole Soyinka's works on Instagram, I corrected her that there have been film adaptations of other plays of Soyinka. But I have seen repetitions of this falsehood in several news reports.

Misinformation on the facts of life and history does collateral damage to human knowledge and education.  And the realization is more important for Mo Abudu who should be well educated on the history of filmmaking in Nigeria and film adaptations of Nigerian literary works, because she is a highly respected stakeholder in the Nigerian film industry as the Founder and CEO of the EbonyLife Group, owners of EbonyLife Studios, EbonyLife Films and the EbonyLife Creative Academy.

The MultiChoice Talent Factory and other Film Schools in Nigeria

I have waited long enough to assess the progress of the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) before writing about it 

I was told that the primary purpose of the establishment is to train screenwriters and filmmakers that will produce regular content for the M-Net Channels on DStv. But it has done more than that, because the alumni are producing content for the global entertainment industry.

The MTF covers WEST AFRICA: Ghana & Nigeria; EAST AFRICA: Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania and SOUTHERN AFRICA: Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia & Zimbabwe.

The MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) Academy has achieved within three years of its establishment since 2018 what other older film schools in Nigeria have failed to achieve for the advancement of the Nigerian film industry. In fact, MTF has exposed the shortcomings of the film schools that have been existing since 2010 to date, but they are still having unaccredited courses and poorly trained graduates who have been rushed through ad-hoc courses in overcrowded classes without in-depth hands-on training on the most important components of filmmaking and film studies.

In filmmaking, if you are good, your works will show that you are good from the script to the screen. In filmmaking, seeing is believing. You show more and talk less. A good film school is not judged by attractive curriculums or fine buildings, but by the quality of the faculty and the quality of the film and TV productions of the alumni in the film industry.

The alumni of MTF have won international awards and scholarships; including the Spotlight award at the 15th edition of the Mobile Film Festival held in Paris, France in 2019 and awards of scholarships from the New York Film Academy (NYFA)  among other notable achievements.

The other film schools in Nigeria should use the template of the MTF for the improvement of their curriculums in accordance with the international standards of the best film schools in the world and they should join the International Association of Film and Television Schools (Centre International de Liaison des Ecoles de Cinéma et de Télévision (CILECT)

Majority of screenwriters in #Nollywood and #Kannywood need to learn how to include sound cues during screenwriting and not during post production.

If we ask even those who claim to know a simple question about sound in screenwriting, they may not know, because they have not shown that they know in several of their film and TV productions.

Seeing is believing.

Many people listen, but only few learn in Nigeria. That's why we hear and see repetitions of the same mistakes in film and TV productions in Africa's largest film industry.

They still don't know how to use sound for characterisation in screenplays before the principal photography.

They just copy and paste soundtracks during post production without creating and composing any original score.  

Sound in a movie includes the music, leitmotifs, dialogues, sound effects, ambient noise, and/or background noise and soundtracks. 

There is what I call the "Ambience of Romance" in filmmaking and it can only be achieved with sound.

And what is the ambience of romance in screenwriting and in the atmosphere of a scene?

I am still waiting for the cinematic experience of Dolby Vision in Nollywood and Kannywood.

To me, any Nigerian filmmaker whose movies have not qualified for the Official Selections of the Cannes Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and Berlin Film Festival is not qualified to teach any  Masterclass. 

How can you teach a Masterclass without the proof of being a master of the subject?

How can someone who is still having issues with the nuances of sound in storytelling teach a Masterclass on directing or screenwriting? 

Do you know that majority of the filmmakers in Nollywood and Kannywood are clueless about spherical and anamorphic lenses? And they are teaching Filmmaking in some so called film and TV academies in Lagos, Asaba, Calabar and Kannywood without any certification or accreditation.

This film adaptation of the Aba Women’s Riot in 1929 by Moses Eskor only exposed the opportunism of both the director and the film distributor. And I am disappointed that an actor as well educated as Sam Dede featured in this bastardization of the historical facts of Aba Women's Riot and Daniel Okechukwu's review has said it all for me.

If you don't have the intellectual education for the comprehensive research and professional competence in filmmaking, it is best to hands off the film adaptations of historical events. You cannot give what you don't have.

A good film adaptation of the Aba Women's Riot is the kind of film that can qualify for the Official Selections of the Cannes, Venice, Toronto, Berlin and make the nominations for the Academy Awards. But as Okechukwu said, they messed it up.  It is a Nollywood comedy of the Aba Women's Riot. They even said, "We move!"

I have the entire transcripts of the court trials and the details of the principal characters and situations of the circumstances and consequences of the Aba Women's Riot and they are available for any proven filmmaker who has the criteria for the film adaptation.

Case Study:

The Blair Witch Project is a 1999 American supernatural horror film written, directed and edited by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez. It is a fictional story of three student filmmakers—Heather Donahue, Michael C. Williams, and Joshua Leonard—who hike into the Black Hills near Burkittsville, Maryland in 1994 to film a documentary about a local legend known as the Blair Witch. The three disappear, but their equipment and footage are discovered a year later. The purportedly "recovered footage" is the film the viewer sees. Myrick and Sánchez conceived of a fictional legend of the Blair Witch in 1993. They developed a 35-page screenplay with the dialogue to be improvised. A casting call advertisement in Backstage magazine was prepared by the directors; Donahue, Williams and Leonard were cast. The film entered production in October 1997, with the principal photography taking place in Maryland for eight days. About 20 hours of footage was shot, which was edited down to 82 minutes. Shot on an original budget of $35,000–60,000, the film had a final cost of $200,000–750,000 after post-production edits.

The International Chamber of Media & Entertainment 8ndustry (ICMEI) has formed the Indo-Nigeria Film & Cultural Forum with the High Commission of Nigeria in India. 

The High Commission of India in Nigeria is supporting a partnership between Nollywood (Nigeria’s movie industry) and Bollywood (India’s movie industry): that “India can use its more than 100 years of experience in Bollywood to assist Nigeria” and to promote cultural bilateral relations of the two countries and international co-productions in the global entertainment industry.

The first Bollywood To Nollywood Filmmaking Workshop by the Asian Academy of Film and Television (AAFT) is coming up in 2021 in Lagos State.

It is in partnership with the High Commission of India, AAFT of India and Wakaati Network of Nigeria It is supported by Dolby and SecurityRisk Brokers. NTA2 is the official news media partner.

It is for three days on Directing; Costume for Storytelling in motion picture, Film Score,  Soundtrack and Sound Design for film production.

The workshop will be directed by Ashok Tyagi, the Secretary General of ICMEI.

The workshop will cover the methodology of converting an interesting story into a gripping screenplay and the conversation of that screenplay into an entertaining film with the help of visual and sound design. 

The filmmaking workshop will be concluded with the production of a short film for international film festivals, cable TV and OTT streaming video channels.

Registration is by a letter of application for participation.

The participation fee is N100, 000 per participant for the three days duration of the workshop (including buffet and workshop kit).

ICMEI is an organisation belonging to Asian Education Group which owns, controls and manages the day to day activities of AAFT. ICMEI was formed in 2014 to fulfil the dream of the Respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi to establish friendly relations with all the countries of the world through art, culture and cinema.

Del-York International is not ripping off Ignorant Nigerians

The goal of Del-York International has always been to raise sponsorship to cover full tuition, feeding and accommodations for all participants of the training program from Nigeria's public and private sectors.

While we recognize that the price for world class training by the New York Film Academy is a shock for most Nigerians, we have been able to raise support from Local companies who are invested in building the capacity of our nation's youth in the creative industries, which was recently recognized by the World Bank to have great potential for job creation and poverty alleviation.

This year we received the generous support from our partners: NDDC, Edo State Government, Riverdrill Group, Pepsi and NAFDAC to sponsor 96% of the students currently attending the program in Lagos.

We hope that this group of students will exceed the success rate of the graduates from the 2010 training program in Abuja, where 122 of the 400 graduate are presently employed in the entertainment industry, with some on the BBC film crew, and others already creating jobs for many by opening their own production studios.
