The MultiChoice Talent Factory and other Film Schools in Nigeria

The MultiChoice Talent Factory and other Film Schools in Nigeria

I have waited long enough to assess the progress of the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) before writing about it

I was told that the primary purpose of the establishment is to train screenwriters and filmmakers that will produce regular content for the M-Net Channels on DStv. But it has done more than that, because the alumni are producing content for the global entertainment industry.

The MTF covers WEST AFRICA: Ghana & Nigeria; EAST AFRICA: Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania and SOUTHERN AFRICA: Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia & Zimbabwe.

The MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) Academy has achieved within three years of its establishment since 2018 what other older film schools in Nigeria have failed to achieve for the advancement of the Nigerian film industry. In fact, MTF has exposed the shortcomings of the film schools that have been existing since 2010 to date, but they are still having unaccredited courses and poorly trained graduates who have been rushed through ad-hoc courses in overcrowded classes without in-depth hands-on training on the most important components of filmmaking and film studies.

In filmmaking, if you are good, your works will show that you are good from the script to the screen. In filmmaking, seeing is believing. You show more and talk less. A good film school is not judged by attractive curriculums or fine buildings, but by the quality of the faculty and the quality of the film and TV productions of the alumni in the film industry.

The alumni of MTF have won international awards and scholarships; including the Spotlight award at the 15th edition of the Mobile Film Festival held in Paris, France in 2019 and awards of scholarships from the New York Film Academy (NYFA)  among other notable achievements.

The other film schools in Nigeria should use the template of the MTF for the improvement of their curriculums in accordance with the international standards of the best film schools in the world and they should join the International Association of Film and Television Schools (Centre International de Liaison des Ecoles de Cinéma et de Télévision (CILECT)

Paris Fashion Week:Roberta Annan Launches €100M Impact Fund To Invest in Africa’s Creative Industries

 PRESS RELEASE

At Paris Fashion Week, Ghanaian entrepreneur Roberta Annan launches €100 m Impact Fund to invest in Africa’s creative industries

The Impact Fund for African Creatives (IFFAC), will award grants of up to €50,000 to selected projects to accelerate development of the continent’s creative sector

PARIS, France, October 7, 2021/ -- Ghanaian businesswoman and entrepreneur Roberta Annan earlier this week launched a €100 million fund to channel investment into small and medium African creative and fashion enterprises. The Impact Fund for African Creatives (https://bit.ly/3BpJS1h) (IFFAC), will award grants of up to €50,000 to selected projects to accelerate development of the continent’s creative sector.

The fund was launched at a ceremony held on Monday 4 October, 2021, during Paris Fashion week, and was attended by fashion industry experts.  Chinelo Anohu, Senior Director of the Africa Investment Forum also attended. The African Investment Forum, a flagship initiative of the African Development Bank, aims to channel investment into Africa.

Annan, who also founded the African Fashion Foundation, said that, in addition to grants, IFFAC will make a further €250,000- €2 million in venture capital available to African entrepreneurs who complete its skills-building program. “I have encountered so much incredible talent all over the continent, such originality and innovation,” said Annan. “But I have also noticed a lack of management skills, infrastructure, and start-up capital necessary to scale these creative businesses. This is the motivation behind IFFAC.”

Anohu said the Africa Investment Forum has been in talks with IFFAC as it curates projects that will feature at its upcoming AIF 2021 Market Days to be held in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, from December 1-3.

“I applaud IFFAC for its plans to bring early-stage capital deployment, along with a structured program of training and mentorship to artists and entrepreneurs like Nigerian designer Kenneth Ize,” said Anohu. “For all those investors in this room, who believe, like I do, in the potential for commercializing the exports of Africa’s creative genius, I invite you to contact the Africa Investment Forum.”

Ize, a beneficiary of the Impact Fund program, also attended the launch, after last week becoming the first African to open Paris Fashion Week.

Africa’s creative industry is an increasingly important part of the investment mix for the future of the African economy;  The Forum’s 2021 Market Days will showcase creative and cultural-sector deals from around the continent, including in film and television, as well as women-led projects, among other sectors.

While in Paris, Anohu also met European investors, including institutional investors, that are actively interested in Africa’s creative industry, as well as other key priority sectors under the Forum’s Unified Covid-19 response pillars (https://bit.ly/2YusiKP). These sectors include technology, renewable energy and agro processing.

Hon. Simon Uzama Okpalaeke: When A Good Man Takes A Bow

Hon. Simon Uzama Okpalaeke: When A Good Man Takes A Bow

By Ingram Osigwe

When a good man departs, hearts quake, eyes become teary and many become inconsolable.

The above are exactly the case with the people of Azia community in Ihiala local government area of Anambra state following the death of one of their illustrious sons, Hon. Barrister Simon Uzama Okpalaeke ( Ikenga Azia).

It was with profound sense of loss and shock that friends and associates of the family far and wide learnt of the untimely death, Hon. Barrister Simon Uzama Okpalaeke.

The Okpalaekes and indeed Azia community are at loos as to why their illustrious son had to depart at this time.

Every one who knew Simon is saddened and devastated by his departure not because he would have lived forever but because no one imagined Simon would be gone so soon.

During his life time, Simon was always full of wits and candour, very resourceful and devoted to humanity and to the things of God

For the entire Okpalaeke family and Azia community this is  an irreparable loss.

It is only with equanimity and calmness of heart that one can overcome this grief, knowing that Simon has ran the good race and is now resting in the bosom of the Lord.

The Okpalaekes, having amassed tremendous goodwill over the years, have been receiving  outpouring of words of encouragement  since Simon left. So,assuredly the family is not mourning alone.

Azia as a community and Anambra as a state mourn with the Okpalaeke family and grief with them too over the transition of this great son of theirs for he worked tirelessly for the upliftment of his community  and state.

Simon was a patriot whose love and passion for his people was unparalleled and unwavering. As a member of the Anambra state House of Assembly, as a lawyer, as corporate czar and as an international businessman, Simon left an indelible print on the sands of time in terms of attracting rapid development to Azia.

As a lawmaker representing Ihiala 11 state constituency, he left a salutary imprimatur of quality and people oriented leadership.

Simon was a selfless leader who gave his all, sacrificing his comfort and pleasure just for the good of his people.

His demise has indeed left a great vacuum in Azia for he was one of the beacons of hope for the community.

Surely, this is a painful loss and one can only  pray that God's abiding love be with the family and give them strength and comfort during this time of deep sorrow.

Though we grief and mourn because we would have loved that Simon stayed with us a little longer, one is consoled by the fact that his elegant virtues are acknowledged and applauded by those who knew him and what he stood for, for in the words of Abraham Lincoln, "in the end it is not the years in your life that counts, it is the life in your years".

Born in 1957, the young Simon attended Lafiaji primary school, Fegge, Onistha from where he proceeded to St. Anthony secondary school, Azia.He was to finish his secondary education at Uli Boys High school, Uli in 1979, obtaining Grade one in his WASC Examination.

Simon would later study law at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, graduating in 1986.

After Law school in 1987 and Youth Service in Ede, Osun state, the following year, he, in partnership with some colleagues, set up a law firm, Duru, Okpalaeke and co at 103 Awolowo way, Ikeja, Lagos. It was a successful practice as the firm handled many landmark cases and won.

The expansion of the family business, GINPAT Aluminium soon required Simon's legal expertise and he was made Head of the company's legal Department and Director as well.He held these positions in the company till his demise on February 1, 2021.

Notedly,  GINPAT is a pioneer aluminium company founded by three unique brothers namely Chief Godwin Okpalaeke(the Onowu Azia) the late Chief Pat Okpalaeke (Omezilibe Azia) and  now late Hon.Barr. Uzama Okpalaeke (Ikenga Azia).

Indeed, the Okpaleke family of Azia community, through Uzama was able to show Nigerians that three brothers can live in one compound, cook in one pot and show love.

In-between the periods of his law practice and positions at GINPAT, Simon shuttled abroad for international businesses and was at a time a force to reckon with in the importation of refrigerators and air conditioners.

He also worked for Dozzy oil Ltd as MD of one of the company’s subsidiaries.

Being a very popular, humble and grassroots person, Simon in 2007 contested and won election into the Anambra state House of Assembly to represent Ihiala  constituency 11.

It was to Simon's credit that during his representation, he attracted the construction of the road leading to Nkwo Okija from the St. Anthony Catholic church junction.

He also gave Ebonesie community the ring road from  Azia through Mbosi to Orsumughu.Infact, during his time in the House, the Ihiala constituency 11 never had it so good in terms of quality representation.

A knight of St. John International, Simon was a caring husband to his lovely wife and heartthrob, Chinyere (nee Enendu)  whom he wedded in 1992, and a dotting father to their six wonderful children who are all successful in their various fields today. Some are IT gurus, pilot and lawyers.

A man filled with milk of human kindness, as an individual, Simon introduced Full page to some prime accounts. He also extended similar gestures to so many other friends.

The late Ikenga Azia belonged to so many clubs e.g Diamond fitness club, G 21 etc and he was never passive in any of these clubs.

Hon. Barrister Simon Uzama Okpalaeke, Ikenga Azia, the people's person, the humane, the kind hearted, a man with a heart of Gold, will sorely be missed.

The Hatchet Job on "Lagos in Motion" Photo Book That Failed

The Hatchet Job That Failed

A fellow Nigerian went on Amazon Books to dismiss my photo book, "Lagos in Motion" that was selling for only US$3 and advised that  Amazon should not sell such a complete waste of money. I am sure he must have celebrated his hatchet job and waited for the book to be dropped. But the book is still on Amazon and selling for US$20 and others are selling it for more than US$32 per copy. And guess what! A book trader is selling the same book for US$404.00 (+ $ 111.39 shipping) a copy!

https://www.amazon.com.mx/Lagos-Motion-Africas-Largest-Megacity/dp/1536934925

The intellectually ignorant Nigerian did not know why I published the photo book of selected photographs from my "Lagos in Motion" documentary film. It is to document the making of the documentary film and not to compete for the World Photography Awards or other competitions. The book is for the foreign tourists and visitors to see my positive images of Africa's largest megacity and not the usual  horrible living conditions of Makoko and other slums in Lagos state.

I was born and bred in this dynamic city that is one of the most resilient cities in the world and the dynamic economy has made Lagos the 4th largest economy in Africa.

Africa Telecom People Conference and Awards / Optimism on Telecoms Tempered by High Taxes and Degrading Regulatory Environment

23 Feb 2010 08:27 Africa/Lagos

Africa Telecom People Conference and Awards / Optimism on telecoms tempered by high taxes and degrading regulatory environment

PARIS, February 22, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- This year's African Telecom People Conference and Awards on 12 February was held in Paris and as a result was smaller than previous years' events. Nevertheless, it was an interesting gathering as Laurent Marx and Sylvain Béletre from Balancing-Act discovered.

Marc Rennard, VP at Orange AMEA highlighted recent Orange progress in Africa, such as major investment to deploy new fiber networks landing on the continent.
He highlighted the content issue in Africa, mentioning that infrastructure should come before content but that local content can also boost usage demand."Orange is expecting double digit growth on the continent for 3G deployment, but that will most depend on the attitudes of the regulatory, fiscal and political bodies" he added, a clear reference to its current tussle with the Kenyan regulator CCK over the cost of 3G licences.

Rennard also confirmed that Orange Money successes could also be replicated in other African countries pretty soon on the basis that only 5% of Africans have a bank account. Orange is making large progress with content, investing in a new pan-african portal named StarAfrica.com, in football rights via the CAN (Coupe d'Afrique des Nations) 2010 partnership, and in local website revamping.

A recurring theme was that African Governments were killing “the goose that laid the golden egg”. Tax increases in many countries should stop and stabilise. Real ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) is now as low as USD 3/month in some regions. Data ARPUs in South Africa are USD 2 in South Africa. Observers should not evaluate companies on ARPU, but on AMRU (Average Margin Per User). Wholesale and roaming costs of African telecoms are still much too high to break the telecoms divide.

Not all the extra costs in Africa come from Government. Outside of the conference tracks, there was talk about a lot of money being wasteddue to stealing and hidden costs: "one day you build a post or dig some fiber, the day after it has gone! then the mayor comes to you and suddenly ask for extra taxes. Same from local inhabitants, they want money because you dig in front of their houses" commented a large operator. People steal telecoms equipment and bypass traffic which indirectly increases telecoms costs for local users.

Rémy Fekete, the partner responsible for Technology Media and Telecoms at Gide, provided an in-depth review of the telecoms' regulatory status and related issues in Africa. He raised a number of examples showing that, after a virtuous trend, the continent has witnessed a degradation of its regulatory framework over last year.

The lack of an attractive legal and regulatory environment is a serious threat to the capacity of the continent to move to 3G/Mobile internet generation. Significant investments - both in high capacity transmission networks and local content - are required to make mobile internet a reality in Africa. The significant degradation of the environment does not help to build PPP (public private partnerships) operations.

Diversification, intelligent competition and entrepreneurship should be further encouraged by governments to lower telecoms prices, increase bandwidth and telecommunication access.

There is an obvious lack of support from governments in supporting the telecoms industry: Fekete made a point that most regulators are not truly independent except in a few countries. Government need to put their voice into action and give full powers to follow up with regulators decisions and endorse the law. Competition has been decreasing in several regions as a result. There is a lack of will and means to implement universal access, except for example in Tanzania and Uganda where results are promising.

Demba Diop, Director of Business Services at MTN Ivory Coast mentioned that it had also invested several million dollars in football rights and on content. Diop said that his company has signed a deal with TraceTV - a channel present in the whole Africa which broadcasts in 145 countries - available via pre-paid offer "MTN Trace Mobile" giving the ability to download music video clips among other services.

The offer, set at USD 9 and targeting urban youth includes voice, a data pack available for free over week-ends and free SMS', as well as access to Trace club, an interactive platform. MTN Cameroon launched the offer at the end of Dec 2009, and Ivory Coast is planned for February 2010. Thanks to the offer, ARPU has already increased.

Corinne Lozé CEO of Orange StarAfrica.com described the launch of the newly launched Orange information and interactive portal, still in development. The Portal provides free news related to current affairs, sport, music and education (more at www.starafrica.com). The StarAfrica.com team has 5 full time employees and 15 correspondents from various African regions aggregating content. The portal lives on two financial sources: advertising banners and premium services.

The site will enable interactive user feedback and networking, thus boosting local content and sharing of opinions. It will also expand to cover new areas in order to promote communication from individuals and companies and enable blog-type functions. Lozé added: "internet growth is very rapid in Africa right now; Africans only reprents 2.5% of global internet users but it could fast catch up with the lead pack". Lozé called on African content providers to contact her team in order to increase content flows.

Nadine Berezak-Lazarus, MD of BMP telecommunications consultants GmbH in Germany described "PPP" processes, public-private partnerships on the deployment of regional fiber networks and the set up of universal access.

Serge Thiémélé, associate of the Global telecom center at Ernst and Young Cote d'Ivoire delivered a very interesting presentation on best financial practices and hidden details regarding kpi provided by telecoms service providers.

The conference ended with the awards evening gala which confirmed the following people had received awards (list of awards)

Akwasi Agyeman, Investor Relations Officer at Starcomms Plc. in Nigeria said "It was a great event and Starcomms was excited and grateful for the award. When you think about all the major operators within West Africa and especially Nigeria, and Starcomms wins this The Best Operator Award, it speaks volumes of what the Board of Directors, the CEO and the Employees are trying to achieve – a clear focus on executing all initiatives including excellence in customer service.

We will continue to bring innovative products to the Nigerian community."

Latest expansion will provide enhanced communications services for more Saudi residents

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, March 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today announced a contract worth approximately SA435 million ($116 million) with Etihad Etisalat (Mobily). The contract marks the fifth major turnkey GSM network expansion that Mobily has undertaken with Motorola in the past four years. Saudi Arabia's Northwest and Southwest regions will benefit from enhanced GSM coverage and capacity and the contract underscores Motorola's commitment to Saudi Arabia and further reinforces the strong relationship with Mobily.

The turnkey expansion will enable Mobily to expand its network coverage to increase its subscriber base within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Motorola will deliver its GSM infrastructure solutions as well as comprehensive range of services.

"The demand for reliable communications services in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is growing and the Mobily expansion project of our GSM network will help to meet the demands and expectations of new subscribers in the western north and southern north regions," said Khalid Al-Kaf, CEO of Mobily. "Our relationship with Motorola and other international companies began in 2004 and we have achieved tremendous success in making Mobily the most trusted mobile service provider in the Kingdom."

"Motorola is a global leader in GSM and our innovative technologies and solutions provide a reliable and scalable network for Mobily to meet growing customer demands," said Ali Amer, vice president sales, Middle East, Africa & Pakistan, Motorola Home & Networks Mobility. Some of the recent major contract wins include expansion contracts with VNPT Group in Vietnam, China Mobile in China, and Celtel Nigeria in Nigeria.

National Daily Awards for "Excellence" or Pretence

Awards events in Nigeria are mere publicity stunts by many newspapers and NGOs who have been giving awards to many so called worthy Nigerians who should rather be prosecuted for fraudulent activities and arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and not collecting fake awards like the strange bed fellows I saw at the last National Daily Awards for “excellence” or pretence on Thursday February 12, 2009.
Does the fake Senate President deserve an award?
For what? Rigging election?
How was he elected?

The venue of the awards ceremony, the Expo Hall of the Eko Hotel on the Victoria Island was a gathering of wolves in sheep clothing and many pretenders.
It was a comedy of errors.
Why should you give an award to a public official for simply doing his job?
A governor building a road with tax payers money is given a standing ovation?

A forgotten singer Mandy Ojugbana suddenly resurfaced to strangulate the National Anthem and got a lashing from Prof. Dora Akunyili, the new Minister of Information and Communication who was a fearless crusader against fake drugs whilst she was the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
