Film Criticism and Film Journalism

Film Criticism and Film Journalism

Anybody who can write and can study the Nigerian film industry can write on both Nollywood and Kannywood.

Don't mistake film journalism for film criticism.

Majority of those claiming to be film critics in Nigeria are either film journalists or commentators.

You cannot be a film critic if you don't understand filmmaking. Because how can you do a critique of a subject you don't understand the concept, content and context?

You don't know about Lighting for Storytelling and you are a film critic?

You don't know how soundtracks are used in storytelling and you call yourself a film critic?

You don't know costume for storytelling and you call yourself a film critic?

What of histrionics in drama?

Should I go on?

You cannot be a good film critic if you don't know the history of filmmaking or motion picture.

Until reading what I have written now, 99 percent of the so called film critics in Nigeria don't know what is film noir.

In the study of fine arts, we study art history and criticism combined, because you cannot be a good art critic if you don't know art history.

There is widespread intellectual ignorance and posturing by those who claim to be film critics, but they don't even know that filmmaking is part of fine arts and film criticism is part of art history and criticism.

This must be news to them.

Can they discuss Abstract Art in Art History and Criticism with Ekenyerengozi Michael Chima?

Can they do a critique of my masterpiece, "The Metamorphosis of the HIV in the T-Cell" collected by Family Health International (FHI) or "The Eruption of the Love Virus" in private collection since 1993?

I don't even claim to be a film critic.

I am a film writer and historian on the history of Nollywood and the Nigerian film industry widely published, circulated and studied by scholars and students in different colleges and universities in Nigeria and other countries.

Why? Because of the importance, relevance and significance in film studies, African studies, art history and criticism.

Poetry in Motion Picture

One of the best scenes from my documentary film, "Lagos in Motion".

Featuring two of the most beautiful actresses in #Nollywood, international beauty pageant queen @celinaideh and @nunuojong at the Elegushi beach in #Lekki during the first phase of the principal photography in 2016.

I call my style of filmmaking, "Poetry in Motion Picture".

Filmmaking is the art of storytelling in motion picture.
The Art of filmmaking is the horse pulling the cart which is the craft of filmmaking.
Not every filmmaker is an artist.
The greatest filmmakers are artists.
Ask James Cameron.
Ask Steven Spielberg.
Ask Spike Lee.
Ask Francis Ford Coppola
Ask Quentin Tarantino
Ask Woody Allen
Ask Oliver Stone
Ask Clint Eastwood
Ask Martin Scorsese
Ask Sofia Coppola
Ask Sir Steve Rodney McQueen and coming home to Nigeria:
Ask Dr. Ola Balogun
Ask Femi Odugbemi
Ask CJ "Fiery" Obasi.

Highlights from the 2022 Lagos Book and Art Festival

Highlights from the 2022 Lagos Book and Art Festival

The 2022 annual Lagos Book & Art Festival (LABAF) opened on Monday November 14 at the popular Freedom Park on Lagos Island in Nigeria.
LABAF 2022 is specifically dedicated to Prof. Bruce Onobrakpeya, the most phenomenal Nigerian artist and the most published African artist who is famous for his intriguing prints, paintings and sculptures. He has exhibited at the Tate Modern in London, the National Museum of African Art of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C; the Malmö Konsthall in Malmö, Sweden, National Museum and National Art Gallery in Lagos among other places in his illustrious career as an iconic visionary of contemporary art in over five decades since 1957 to date. He celebrated his 90th birthday on August 30.
Onobrakpeya spoke about his life and works as a artist during an exhibition of his installations.  A short documentary film on his popular Harmattan Workshop in his homeplace, Agbarha-Otor, Delta State was screened and Co-founder of CORA and LABAF, the polymath and patron of the arts, Toyin Akinosho spoke on how Onobrakpeya has been part of LABAF from the very beginning.

There was a symposium on "Our Inheritance: What I Took From Bruce" by Barret Akpokabayen, Kunle Adeyemi, Juliet Ezenwa, Oguchukwu Ejiofor and Nse Abasi Inyang.

Later famous veteran artist and administrator, Pa Timothy Adebanjo Fasuyi and Prof. Ebun Clark spoke about the early years of Onobrakpeya from being one of the "Zaria Rebels" at the Ahmadu Bello University whilst studying fine arts to the later years moderated by Mufu Onifade, artist and arts writer.

LABAF 2022 on the theme of "Pathways to the Future" runs from November 14-20 at the Freedom Park and virtually via Zoom and on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

Acclaimed Nigerian filmmaker, Tunde Kelani's "Saworoide" and "Lift"  by young filmmaker, Abraham Amkpa were screened on the opening day. Kelani was present for the Q&A interactive conversation with the audience on his political film produced in 1999.

LABAF 2022 is the 24th edition of the hybrid international book fair and art festival founded in 1999 by the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA), as a literary and visual festival for “freedom of creative expression to herald the rebirth of Democratic governance in Africa’s biggest nation”. There are over 50 books in focus with over 60 independent sessions of literary conversations, visual arts (fine and applied arts and crafts); performances in poetry, drama, dance, music and sociocultural interactions with participants in Nigeria and other countries.

The Curator/Director, Jahman Anikulapo, said the discourse around "Pathways to the Future" is meant to “figure a way out of the ‘State of Flux’ which led us to a ‘Fork in the Road. See the programmes on https://www.lagosbookartfestival.org.

Happy Birthday Prof. Bruce Onobrakpeya

Happy Birthday great man of the arts.

I am happy for you with all the thanksgivings to Almighty God for blessing you with long life and prosperity.

Prof. Bruce Onobrakpeya is one of the greatest artists of all time.

I am proud to have been tutored by him and I made him proud by representing Nigeria as an illustrator at two international book fairs cosponsored by the UNESCO in Japan in 1983. I was the youngest participant among lecturers, including professors. Then in 1993, I had the honour as a curator to include his unique artworks in the 1993 World AIDS Day Art Exhibitions at the National Museum and National Arts Theatre in Lagos, Nigeria. If there was a Nobel Prize for fine arts, he would have won it.

He is also the most published African artist in contemporary modern art.

Exclusive Interview With Thierry Ehrmann, the Founder and CEO of Artprice.com

13 Jun 2011 01:00 Africa/Lagos

Exclusive Interview With Thierry Ehrmann, the Founder and CEO of Artprice.com

PARIS, June 13, 2011/PRNewswire/ -- This 9-page interview explains how Artprice imposed itself as the world leader in art market information, and how it then became the 1st worldwide market place in volume for art works with its standardised market place. These 37 questions, sometimes uncompromising, enable to understand Artprice's incredible history in the last 20 years. The interview also provides a global analysis of art markets in the world, with China that is now the leading market place, its leading position being confirmed for 2011. In the course of this long interview, Thierry Ehrmann also review Artprice's adventure on the Stock Market, with the best scoring in Europe on a regulated stock market in 2005 and 2011.

(Photo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20110609/461260 )

These 9 pages are available in English, for accuracy issues.

1. Could you remind us of how Artprice was created?

2. Who were these targets?

3. Could you continue with how Artprice was created?

4. So what is your added value on this documentary fund?

5. How do you produce your reference prices since a painting is by its very nature unique?

6. How have you been able to get around this problem in such little time?

7. What do you reply to those who ask "why does everyone go on Artprice?"

8. Is the money raised on the stock market, along with funds from the Serveur group and the Bernard Arnault group behind the success of Artprice acquisitions?

9. How do you manage reproduction rights for works on line?

10. Would it be possible to create another "Artprice"?

11. How are you sure you will do auctions?

12. How is it possible to be so behind, in terms of computerisation and the Internet in 2011?

13. Why have you chosen the Abode of Chaos, dixit the New York Times, as Artprice's headquarters, is that provocation or strategy?

14. How would you value Artprice?

15. Could you be clearer, with a specific example?

16. Even your critics are on Artprice?

17. What will be the level of commission you earn on the transactions?

18. Is Artprice ripe for a takeover bid?

19. Does Artprice have any competitors?

20. Is Artprice, being the world leader, abusing its dominant position?

21. Did you try and buy out Artnet?

22. It would appear that other DNS can access the Artprice databases...

23. Do you have any new clients?

24. How is Artprice's financial health?

25. With the volumes we have seen, why hasn't the declaration threshold been crossed?

26. What about the Chinese funds?

27. How long do you think it will be before the legislative course is completed for the Law on the liberation of auction sales?

28. Why haven't you moved away?

29. What have you got to say about the ISF (tax on fortune)?

30. Can we be thinking about rapid transition to the SRD Long Only?

31. Have you backtested your system for future on-line auctions?

32. How far has Artprice penetrated the Chinese market?

33. Did you have any difficulties in becoming world leader? You're sometimes criticised for your procedural attitude?

34. Can we hope for a dividend in the near future?

35. What will be the impact of the change of status after the law on the annual turnover figure?

36. Can we consider that at EUR30 we are only at the beginning of the story?

37. And to end with, what is your prediction for the future of Artprice?

Thierry Ehrmann:

With regard to our commitments, which at the time were very ambitious on the 1999 introductory prospectus, we have met them all, well beyond the prospectus actually, coming through the 2000 NASDAQ crisis, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the 2003 war in Iraq and the big financial crisis which began in 2007 and which is far from over. With this decade, which has been the most catastrophic in the past two centuries, I know of only very few companies listed on the regulated stock market which have come out alive, without increasing their capital and which, during this same period, have acquired an undisputed world-leader position. To close this interview, I sincerely believe that we have only seen 10% of the history of Artprice.

Art, People and Freedom: Artocracy in Tunisia

Art, People and Freedom: Artocracy in Tunisia

The First Community Action from JR’s InsideOut Project is Unveiled

Paris, France (April 14, 2011) /PRNewswire/ — In early March, the artist and TED Prize winner JR announced his wish to turn the world “Inside Out.” Through his InsideOut Project, JR invited people around the globe to share a photo portrait – along with a statement about what they stand for – and paste thepictures in their communities. A group of photographers and organizers in Tunisia were the first to participate in an InsideOut community project, which they named Artocracy.

Through Artocracy, six Tunisian photographers – joined by JR and his team – traveled the country in late March to take pictures and display images of more than 100 Tunisians who represent the nation’s incredible diversity: men and women of every age, profession, cultural background, and geographic location.

“For the first large street exhibition in a new Arab democracy, the pasting promised to be surprising and the confrontation with art not always simple,” said JR. “There is nothing better to understand the weight of traditions, and the willingness to change them, than to post big portraits in the symbolic places of the revolution.”

Artocracy in Tunisia is an art project initiated by Slim Zeghal and Marco Berrebi, created with a group of Tunisian photographers that include Sophia Baraket, Rania Dourai, Wissal Dargueche, Aziz Tnani, Hichem Drissand Héla Ammar.

The team of photographers and pasters spent the first day in La Goulette and the second in Tunis, where the pictures were taken down. The group then moved on to Sidi Bouzid, an isolated region where the revolution began, to work with those who helped start the revolution.

From there the team traveled to Sfax, Sidi Bouzid, and Le Kram where they met with men and women to discuss the InsideOut Project, raise objections, and eventually paste photos and share the concept with neighbors.

“This project gave hope that Tunisia will become a country as open to art as Spain after Franco or Berlin after the wall was taken down,” said JR.
About the InsideOut Project

JR’s TED Prize wish was the InsideOut Project. Using black and white photographic portraits, people can reveal personal – and perhaps untold – stories, beliefs, and convictions. By visiting www.insideoutproject.net, individuals can take a photo portrait of someone whose story they want to tell, including themselves.

After uploading the picture, along with a supporting personal statement (which can be submitted in any language), users will be mailed a poster of their portrait and asked to paste it in their local community – whether as a solitary image in an office window, among other portraits on the wall of an abandoned building, or in a full stadium. The team behind the InsideOutProject also helps connect participants who want to organize community pastings, which will be documented, archived and viewable virtually. Artocracy was the first community organized InsideOut project.
