International Companies Fail To Keep Pace With Anti-Corruption Legislation

Global Survey Reveals International Companies' Widespread Failure to Keep Pace With Anti-Corruption Legislation

LONDON, September 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

An international survey of over 300 senior in-house lawyers, conducted for Control Risks by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), reveals companies have much to do to stamp out corruption within their businesses and ensure they do not fall foul of the increasingly tough stance adopted by regulators.
The survey reveals that:
  • Only 50% of companies have procedures to check the background and reputation of business associates. This "due diligence" process is regarded by law enforcement as a vital measure to prevent corruption.
  • Just 50% of global companies have policies banning 'facilitation payments' to suppliers and government agencies.
  • 37% do not have a clause in contracts with sub-contractors and consultants forbidding bribes being paid on the company's behalf.
  • Most respondents cited small 'operational' bribes as the main cause for concern. By contrast, less than a third referred to the 'classic' corruption risks associated with winning business.

International attitudes to facilitation payments may be changing, but companies can find themselves operating in an awkward transition period where there remains no clear consensus on how to deal with them. Because of inadequate internal processes, companies continue to be vulnerable to employees paying bribes without their knowledge. Companies are also insufficiently prepared should they be required to conduct a corruption investigation.

But bribery risks remain very real. Almost half of respondents thought it was possible, somewhat or very likely that they would need to investigate a suspected violation of anti-bribery laws in the next two years.
Commenting on the survey's findings, Richard Fenning, CEO of Control Risks, said:
"Corruption is one of the most significant challenges for international business. Organisations today find themselves under ever-greater scrutiny from regulators, the media, their customers, clients and employees who are demanding that they be able to demonstrate that they operate ethically and with integrity. Yet, despite tougher anti-corruption legislation being enforced ever more rigorously, standards of governance remain at best inconsistent.

"This is a challenging world for business - good companies may wish to comply with their countries' anti-corruption laws, but are disadvantaged by competitor companies not playing by the rules. But the impact of not having proportionate anti-corruption policies in a company can be severe - threatening their reputation and operations."

Notes to editors
About the survey
Control Risks and the EIU conducted a survey among general counsels and senior in-house lawyers from some of the world's largest companies. The 316 respondents were asked how they assess integrity risks, how they prepare employees to resist corruption and manage corruption investigations.

My Appointment as the PDP National Publicity Secretary Is An Act of God

Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, (FIICA).
MY APPOINTMENT AS THE PDP NATIONAL PUBLICITY SECRETARY AN ACT OF GOD – MY APPRECIATION AND PAST

Preamble
As most of you are aware, I was announced as the new National Publicity Secretary of our great party PDP by the new leadership of the party on 9th September, 2013 through a press release by the National Secretary of the party, His Excellency, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola. The announcement came to me as a shock as I neither lobbied nor asked for any such appointment. According to our great and amiable Chairman, Alh. Abubakar Kawu Baraje, my name came tops amongst many other great names suggested for this office. Whatever may be the reasons for my appointment, I owe everything to God, as well as to the numerous journalists and media chiefs without whom I cannot claim to be anything.

My Appreciation
I sincerely thank my Principals who made this appointment possible: Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, GCON; Their Excellencies, Govs Chibuike Amaechi of Rivers State, Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, Rabiu Musa Kwankawanso of Kano State, Babaganida Aliyu of Niger State, Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State; Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, and Abdulfatai Ahmed of Kwara State; my immediate Principals, Alh. Abubakar Kawu Baraje, the National Chairman of PDP; Comrade Sam Jaja, the party’s National Vice Chairman; and, of course, my immediate boss, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, the National Secretary of our party.

It will not be possible for me to know all that played one part or the other to make this possible but be assured that my good God will surely pay each of you back in hundred-folds. It will not be fair should I forget my beloved wife, Evang. Mrs. Ada Chioma Henrietta Eze, whose 51st birthday we were celebrating last Saturday when I was directed to be in Abuja to assume duties as the new National Publicity Secretary of our great party. Seeing that it was a national call, this amiable lady immediately released me to answer the call without delay. My thanks also go to my kids for their understanding in this regard.

I must commend and thank my colleagues, friends and brothers in the media for the wonderful support so far accorded me these few days of assuming this task, not minding that I have neither called nor contacted any of them over this assignment. My special thanks go to members of the PDP Correspondents Chapel, Abuja, who have proved that they are ready to support me in this regard. My friends in the foreign media, social media – the Lagos axis, the Port Harcourt axis, the Yola axis – have proved that they are truly friends indeed. My colleagues, the iron lady of the media in Rivers State and Commissioner of Information, Mrs. Ibim Sementari, and, of course, the silent operator and affable Chief Press Secretary to Gov Amaechi, Mr. David Iyofor, for their love and assistance. I am short of words on how to thank the two of you for all your invaluable assistance so far. Great knowing you people. The trio of Prince Tonye Princewill, Hon Chief Dakuku Peterside and Distinguished Senator Magnus Abe for showing special love to me since I came into contact with each one of you. Hon John Enebeli, the Rivers State Liaison Officer, has been a wonderful host since I came into Abuja. I cannot thank each of these groups of people enough but I am sure that we shall all smile after collaborating to salvage our great party out of the hands of those that made our intervention inevitable.

Challenges of the office
I am not given to fear of any challenge. Therefore, irrespective of the risks and challenges associated with this type of assignment, I am convinced that with the prayers of all Nigerians, I and other great minds on this rescue mission of getting back our great party to the path of honour and democratic principles as envisaged by its founding fathers will surely succeed.

 My plea
My plea is for patience as I hope to start my familiarization tour of some media houses across the country as soon as the issue of our National Secretariat and some others are sorted out. Once again, I thank you all for the love you so far exhibited towards me.
Let me formally conclude by expressing my profound gratitude to our leader, President Goodluck Jonathan, our BOT Chairman, Chief Tony Anenih, and members of the Elders Committee under the able leadership of His Excellency, General Olusegun Obasanjo, General Ibrahim Babamgida, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, Dr. Barnabas Gemade and all our leaders in different capacities as we all work together to bring peace to our great family which most of you have toiled assiduously to bring to this height.
For the numerous calls asking me about my past, I decided to submit this brief biography for your consideration and action where necessary.

Did You Know That Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart Was Banned in Malaysia?

Do you know that Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe (1958) is one of the top 10 most infamously outlawed novels of all time?

Chinua Achebe (16 November 1930 – 21 March 2013).

The gist: One of the most celebrated pieces of African literature, Achebe’s story of Okonkwo, a leader and local wrestling champion in Umofia – a fictional group of nine villages in Nigeria – recalls the influences of British colonialism and Christian missionaries on his traditional Igbo community during an unspecified time period in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.

Why was it banned? Reportedly banned in Malaysia, it is critical of colonialism and its consequences.

The African Film Festival of Cordoba, 10 Years Breaking Stereotypes of the African Continent

The African Film Festival of Cordoba, 10 years breaking stereotypes of the African continent

Over 60 films from 24 different countries will be screened in the capital from the 11th to the 19th of October

Córdoba, 6 de septiembre de 2013. The African Film Festival of Cordoba-FCAT returns to the city from the 11th to the 19th of October, celebrating its 10th anniversary since its inception in 1993. Following a long history of curating emblematic titles, awarded worldwide, this edition enjoys the anniversary to introduce various surprises and to melt themes, titles and spaces for a better understanding of the neighbouring continent through its film cultures.

The African Film Festival of Cordoba-FCAT has been challenging the widespread stereotypical images of the continent for a decade now, placing itself as the only festival in Spain showcasing these cinemas. In order to better represent the multicultural reality of these countries, the programme includes over 60 films made in 24 different countries, not just by Africans in the continent but also, in the diaspora, as well as those made by Europeans that are approaching African narratives.

After eight years in Tarifa (Cadiz), the festival – organised by the NGO Al Tarab, and sponsored by the City Council of Cordoba- moved to this Caliphal city, whose streets reveal an Arab heritage that emerged as the best space to welcome also film titles from the Middle East. In this 10th edition, Cordoba cements its place as the city hosting this unique platform in Spain showcasing African and Middle Eastern cinemas. During these nine days, Cordoba will be able to walk on Africa and the Arab world, rekindling indeed a heritage that is particularly notorious in Andalusia.

Once again, following the success of the carefully selected venues last year, Cordoba-FCAT will be repeating the opening and closing ceremony at the majestic Teatro Góngora, used throughout the festival period as a screening venue along with the Filmoteca de Andalucía, Rey Heredia Veintidós or Casa Árabe. However, these will not be the only spaces tasting these narratives. There will be activities for professionals, for citizen participation, under a variety of shapes, and an exhibition enjoying precisely the similarities of the Spanish and African cultures.

The Cordoba-FCAT is a festival devoted to discovering films that have never been shown before, in order to address a wide range of audiences that love the seventh art. But also, it is a festival that attempts to educate the gaze and thus encourage a critical analysis of these cinemas. This is why after having included a short African film course in previous editions, directed by Federico Olivieri, this year, enjoying the celebration of the 10th anniversary, there will be instead a film review workshop, conducted by leading academic, researchers and experienced professionals in the field. This course, absolutely free of charge and directed by the renowned Alfonso Crespo, will be carried out from the 14th to the 18th of October, offering an opportunity to a professional guidance for this field. Applications close on the 27th of September.

Matching with the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the African Film Festival of Cordoba-FCAT, the theme of the retrospective, a category of the festival that aims to overcome the lack of visibility of these cinemas, is love. It is indeed an acute choice, as it overlaps with the ten years of a collective that decided to put together their love for African cinemas under the shape of a film festival, a unique initiative in Spain that is taking over the responsibility and challenge of bringing world cinemas to the country.

Nigerian Beauty of the Month: Agbani Darego

Young, beautiful and natural, Agbani Darego is a young woman full of promise. Born in Lagos, Nigeria. She is the Sixth of Eight Children. At the age of two, she was moved to Port Harcourt, Nigeria of which she recalls her Childhood as loving and memorable, although tainted with the loss of her mom who died of breast cancer, when she was eleven. She attended Bereton Montessory Nursery & primary school, Federal Government Girls College (F.G.G.C) Abuloma, of which she was awarded “Most distinguished Alumni” later in 2010, and the University of Port Harcourt, where she studied Computer Science for a year before her foray into the pageant world.

In 2001, she achieved great success when she won Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria (MBGN). During her reign as MBGN she represented Nigeria in the 2001 Miss Universe competition, held in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. She placed among the top 10 semi-finalists, finishing seventh. She was the only black semi-finalist that year – and the only finalist to wear a maillot as opposed to the more popular bikini. Encouraged by her position at Miss Universe in 2001, Agbani then competed for Miss World, in November 2001 of which she won, becoming the first native Sub-Saharan African to claim the title. Her victory in the pageant was widely welcomed in her home country, and her one-year tenure included goodwill trips and scheduled appearances on behalf of the pageant. Agbani was honoured with the Nigerian national honour “Member of the Order of the Federal Republic” (MFR) after her win as Miss World in 2001. During her reign, she visited a number of countries which included the United Kingdom, South Africa, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, the United States, Germany, Italy, China, Spain and France. She also was a public favourite, as for the first time in the history of the Miss World Pageant; TV Viewers were invited to participate in the Final Vote. Since then, Agbani has made appearances at and judged the Miss World, Miss England, Miss Bulgaria, MR Scotland, Miss Tanzania and the Most Beautiful girl in Nigeria pageants.

The Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Film Hollywood is Talking about is Not Half of a Yellow Sun

Yes. Nigerian born British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor is trending right now in conversations on actors tipped for the Best Actor Oscar on Sunday, February 24, 2014. But it is not for his captivating role as Odenigbo in the Biafran War film "Half of a Yellow Sun" adapted from the award winning novel of the same title by celebrated Nigerian novelist Chimamanda Ngozi-Adichie.
Then for what?
For his more challenging and unforgettable role as Solomon Northup in Steve McQueen’s "12 Years a Slave", the 2013 historical drama film based on the autobiography Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup, a free black man who was kidnapped in Washington, D.C., in 1841 and sold into slavery. He worked on plantations in the state of Louisiana for 12 years before his release.
Hollywood is not even comparing it to his role in "Half of a Yellow Sun" and that should worry the producers of the British/Nigerian movie, because "12 Years a Slave" has overshadowed their own movie and will definitely affect the performance at the box office where it matters most, in America and Canada. But fans of Ejiofor may go ahead to see the two films and that will be good news for producers of "Half of a Yellow Sun" who have not done much for the publicity of their film and till date, have not released any official poster for the most expensive Nigerian movie so far. I wish them luck in getting a major distributor if they want to benefit from the popular demand for Chiwetel Ejiofor at the box office.

The movie poster of 12 Years a Slave.

In fact "12 Years of a Slave" also premiered at the 38th Toronto International Film Festival as "Half of a Yellow Sun" was the one that stunned Toronto and made headlines with rave reviews by top film critics at the film festival.

"12 Years A Slave is the must-see movie of the year, and should win all the Oscars."
~ Adam B. Vary, BuzzFeed's Senior Film Reporter..

"Suspend the betting, close the books, and notify the engraver: I've just seen what will surely be this year's Best Picture winner, and it's '12 Years a Slave.'
~ Kyle Buchanan, Vulture Movies Editor.

"If I never get to participate in a film again, this is it for me."
~ Brad Pitt, co-actor and co-producer of "12 Years a Slave" at the premiere in Toronto last Friday, September 6, 2013.

"12 Years a Slave" will be released  next month on October 18 and as clearly confirmed, is definitely one of the must see movies of the year.
