Al Jazeera Uncovers Large-scale Corruption in Timber Export in Sierra Leone

Journalists working for Al Jazeera English have uncovered corruption in the office of Sierra Leone’s Vice-President Samuel Sumana. The detailed undercover investigation features in the documentary Timber!, broadcast at 22h30 GMT on Wednesday 23 November 2011 as part of Al Jazeera’s Africa Investigates series.

Illegal timber export is big business in Sierra Leone

A 2006 European Union report identified logging as the leading cause of environmental degradation in Sierra Leone. According to the Sierra Leone Forestry Ministry, unless immediate action is taken against logging, all of the country’s forests – as well as the many endangered animal and plant species they support – could disappear by 2018. The President, His Excellency Ernest Bai Koroma, has made no secret of his concern about logging and his desire that it should cease. The government of Sierra Leone has officially outlawed the practice several times.

Emmy award-winning Sierra Leonean journalist Sorious Samura discovered illegal felling of rare hard wood in several parts of the country. In a number of meetings with illegal loggers, Samura posed as a businessman interested in illegal timber exporting. Despite laws prohibiting felling of trees without license, he found illicit logging taking place in all the forest areas he visited. He also met local officials all too willing to supply him with illegal wood. In one instance a local Paramount Chief not only offered to sell him several tons of illegally cut wood, but also to introduce Samura to high level contacts within the Sierra Leonean government to help him breach the ban on timber exports.

In the second half of the investigation, Samura¹s colleague, the multiple-award-winning Ghanaian journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, visited the Vice-President¹s office undercover. Anas and a colleague, again posing as businessmen, met with His Excellency The Vice-President Samuel Sumana and two of his friends, who claimed to be official advisors.

Later the two men, Alex Mansaray and Momoh Konte, sought and accepted cash payments from the Œbusinessmen¹, which they claimed would help secure the Vice-President¹s support for a timber export business that the undercover reporters wished to establish.

Vice-President Sumana later admitted to Al Jazeera that he knew the men but said their claims to be his advisors were false and that he hadn¹t received any money solicited by them on his behalf.

Of one attempt by Alex Monsaray to extract $50,000 from the undercover team, Vice-President Sumana said, ³Alex was acting solely on his own accord without any prior discussion with me.²

His statement did not explain how Mansaray and Konte came to be using his office to secure bribes in the first place.

Commenting on the outcome of the investigation, Samura said, ³As in many parts of Africa, timber has become the new diamonds. The country¹s forests are at risk of being completely wiped out. For unscrupulous foreign investors their ultimate goal is getting their wood and making maximum profit. For the corrupt Sierra Leoneans, it¹s about lining their pockets without any care for the future consequences for the innocent people who will have to pay the price.²

Timber! is the third of six investigations in the Africa Investigates series that puts flesh on Al Jazeera¹s ambition to give voice to the voiceless.

PR Newswire Seminar on the Emerging Social Media Landscape

Emerging Media Today and Tomorrow

PR Newswire Stockholm Holds Seminar on the Emerging Social Media Landscape

PR Newswire Stockholm presents a seminar and debate about the changing communications landscape and the effect of social and emerging media.

Stockholm, 15 November /PRNewswire/ — PR Newswire, the global leader in content and news distribution, recently held a two day event themed around ‘Emerging Media Today and Tomorrow’ hosted by Michael Pranikoff, Global Director of Emerging Media.

The communications landscape is constantly evolving and as a result the way you communicate and engage with your target audience needs to be continually reevaluated.

Both journalists and consumers have changed their media consumption patterns and as more and more content is uploaded every day it becomes increasingly harder to get your message out there and engage with your target audiences.

Michael discussed this ever changing environment and how to embrace these changes. He was joined over the two days by representatives from over 50 leading Nordic companies. The debate was followed by a champagne reception and a selection of canapés prepared by Stefan Eriksson (Swedish chef of the year 2005).

The response to the seminars was extremely positive and the demand to attend so high that many were left disappointed. As a result we decided to film the second day and make this available to everyone. You can find the presentation in five parts at www.youtube.com/PRNnordics

* Part 1 – Michael talks about engaging opportunities everywhere, the Swedish internet population and the content revolution. He also discusses the vast amount of content being uploaded and shared, as well as the complexity of new communication channels.

* Part 2 – Michael shares his thoughts on reach versus control when it comes to owned, paid and earned exposure, the complexity of the new marketing funnel, digital and traditional media, push and pull of content.

* Part 3 – Michael considers the new currency of trust over attention, where news consumers go to first for news about companies. He also talks about the long tail of corporate content and the importance of continuous communication. He also considers Twitter and the four types of Twitter users.

* Part 4 – Michael discusses the importance of search and context as the cornerstone of any successful communications strategy, and discusses how to adapt your content and news releases for search engines and how they affect the availability of your stories online. He also gives some best practice advice on how to write your news release to ensure internet visibility, keyword brainstorming ideas and the increasing importance of multimedia content.

* Part 5 – Michael analyses customer case studies to demonstrate the effectiveness of multimedia assets in news releases, which type of information people share online and how to connect your various communications channels for enhanced search engine optimisation.

This was PR Newswire’s first event in the Nordics and given the extremely positive response will be the first of many.

“PR Newswire is the market leader globally within the content and news distribution markets because of our unparalleled network of news agencies, journalists, bloggers, websites and social media platforms. Our clients have to embrace an ever changing media landscape and Michael’s global experience really helped them understand how to take advantage of these new channels of distribution and the changing skill sets needed to be successful,” commented Johan Cohen, Nordic Director for PR Newswire.

He added, “We have been at the forefront of understanding and embracing this media revolution and have worked with our clients to develop a set of products that enable them to be successful in these spaces. As a result we have seen massive growth in the Nordic Region resulting in a move to our new offices by Stureplan in Stockholm where we hosted the seminars”

He continued, “The feedback we have had from clients who attended these events has been hugely positive and we are planning further events in the New Year where we will continue to listen and learn from our clients, working collaboratively to ensure our products and services continue to evolve in an ever changing media landscape.”

PR Newswire would like to thank all our guests who helped make these events such a success. We would also like to thank Vela who let us use her song Painkiller in our promotion video and lastly Able Film who made an excellent video that really captured the essence of the event.

The Ford Foundation today announced the winners of its Jubilee Transparency Awards, a special set of grants that mark Ford's 50th anniversary in West Africa by supporting organizations committed to transparency, good governance and citizen engagement in Nigeria.

The two award winners, announced Monday at a ceremony in Abuja, are:

Each organization will receive $500,000 to enhance the scale and impact of its work.

"These exemplary organizations demonstrate the pivotal role that citizen involvement and good governance play in securing a just, sustainable and democratic future for Nigeria and West Africa," said Dr. Adhiambo Odaga [http://www.fordfoundation.org/regions/west-africa/team/adhiambo-odaga ], the representative for Ford's West Africa office. "They are a shining example of the potential for West Africa to leverage its extraordinary human and natural resources for the common good."

The Transparency Awards, a one-time program marking Ford's anniversary working in the region, were launched to achieve two objectives: first, to recognize innovative projects and programs that promote transparent, effective and accountable governance at the community level in Nigeria; and second, to showcase the impact of these projects as models for deepening democracy, good governance and anti-corruption across the country.

The winning organizations were selected through an open call for nominations. The nomination process for the awards was managed by the Development Initiatives Network (DIN), a development organization working on public interest issues in Nigeria and a respected Ford Foundation grantee.

A nine-member National Awards Committee [http://www.fordfoundation.org/regions/west-africa/transparency-awards/committee ] , chaired by Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, worked with DIN to screen the nominations. More than 70 organizations were nominated and considered. The Ford Foundation emphasized that the National Awards Committee conducted its work independently and recommended the organizations to be named awardees. The winners will receive the grants directly from the Ford Foundation.

About the winning organizations:

Environmental Rights Action (ERA) operates on the tenet that "environmental rights are human rights." Founded in 1993, ERA has two key priorities: campaigning to change governmental, nongovernmental and commercial policies that are not in the best interest of local communities, and helping people access the legal system to defend their environmental human rights. ERA has been at the forefront of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), helping to underscore the need for transparency and accountability in oil revenue management to stem the effects of the "oil curse." By protecting the environment and seeking the democratization of development, ERA is bringing transparency and accountability to bear on Nigeria's political and economic systems. ERA is the Nigerian chapter of Friends of the Earth.

The Nigerian Popular Theatre Alliance (NPTA) has been working throughout Nigeria on good governance issues, including citizen participation and democracy monitoring, since 1999. It emphasizes that for a development project to truly benefit a community, the voices, aspirations and involvement of local people are essential. The Theatre for Development Centre (TFDC) was established as a research and training unit of the alliance in 2000. The center is affiliated with Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, which played a central role in establishing its approach as an academic field in Nigeria. NPTA is conducting Participatory Governance Training to help women's groups, community-based organizations and local elected officials to promote and demand transparent governance in their communities and states in order to strengthen democratic practice.

The foundation's investments in West Africa today build on a half-century of work in the region and an unwavering commitment to social change in even the toughest of times. Ford supports people and organizations that are committed to building a new culture of transparency, effectiveness and excellence across institutions and to fostering democratic participation and equal opportunity. The foundation's grant making focuses on projects that promote democratic values and engage citizens in advocating for their social and economic rights. Ford also funds improvements in government, with a focus on openness. We believe these approaches will lead to an environment favorable to development.

The Ford Foundation is an independent, nonprofit grant-making organization. For 75 years it has worked with courageous people on the frontlines of social change worldwide, guided by its mission to strengthen democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement. With headquarters in New York, the foundation has offices in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

New York Bomber Suspect Arrest Prompts Warning: "Tune Into Your Surroundings During Thanksgiving Travel," Antiterrorism Expert Says

PR Newswire

BOSTON, Nov. 21, 2011

BOSTON, Nov. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- "The recent arrest of alleged New York bomber Jose Pimenthal underscores the need for all of us to be vigilant during the Thanksgiving travel rush," warns antiterrorism expert Todd McGhee who pioneered new security measures at Logan Airport, post 9/11 and later co-founded Protecting the Homeland Innovations, LLC in Braintree, Mass.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20111102/NE98563 )

"Warning signs of a lone-wolf terrorist include hanging back when everyone is in a rush, appearing trancelike or spouting ideology. Tune into your surroundings instead of your iPod to pick up on out-of-step behaviors that could mean trouble," says McGhee.

On Sunday, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the arrest of Jose Pimentel of Manhattan, "a 27-year-old Al Qaeda sympathizer" who he said was motivated by propaganda and planned to harm returning U.S. troops.

"If a stranger has to think about answering a simple questions like, 'Are you visiting your family?' it's a sign of trouble," says McGhee, adding, "This is what we teach security professionals to look for – subconscious responses people cannot hide. It's a like a tell in a poker player."

"Airport security is getting better, but the public must be aware of what to watch for and how to respond," says McGhee. McGhee's PHI (www.phitraining.com) provides antiterrorist training to security professionals at TSA, AMTRAK, NYPD and other agencies as well as public awareness campaigns.

"Pay attention to the ebb and flow of human activity in airports, rail stations and bus terminals to become more aware of behaviors that are out of step with the crowd. If you sense a threat go with your instincts. Move away and alert the nearest security professional or a gate agent. Do not try to detain the individual yourself. Your safety comes first," says McGhee.

McGhee adds, "Outside the boarding gates, airports are as public as city streets where anybody up to no good can hang out. Situational awareness helps to keep us safe from belligerent drunks, sexual predators, scammers and other troublemakers as well as terrorists."

Captain Idris Wada: The Best Choice For Kogi State

Captain Idris Wada: The Best Choice For Kogi State

~ By Ibrahim Usman

All men are born but not all are born great. The land of Kogi was blessed when Capt. Idris Ichalla Wada was born at Dekina in Kogi State on 26 August 1950. Educated at the Government Secondary School, Dekina and the Federal Government College, Sakata he graduated with a Higher School Certificate. From his School days, he developed very keen interest in aviation, especially in flying as a pilot. His aspirations were met when he gained admission into the Nigeria College of Aviation Technology, Zaria from where he graduated in 1972 with flying colors, bagging a Commercial Pilots’ license.

He proceeded immediately to train for a Flight Instructors License/QFI, which he obtained in record time at Air Service Training College, Perth, Scotland. As a flight instructor he trained students from many African countries.

Captain Wada’s general handling of his machine and students was rated above average. Hence in 1976 he was put forward for the Airline Transport Pilots Licence, again in Perth, Scotland. His interest and dedication to training was recognized and appreciated by the authorities who promptly granted him the opportunity to go to Burnside-Ott Aviation College, Opa-Locka, Miami, Florida. He graduated as a certified Flight Instructor/CE II and a certified Ground Instructor (Instrument).

Armed with these qualifications and experience he switched over to commercial flying which had been his long desire. Thus he joined Nigeria Airways in 1978 where he flew B737 and F28 in command as Captain. In 1993 Capt. Wada realized that he was more gifted in management than just being a line captain, consequently he joined United Airline Services Ltd., Kano, as the Chief Pilot and General Manager. He operated as Captain in Command of Boeing 727 and Boeing 707 cargo with the Company having obtained USA FAAATPL at American Airlines Flight Training Centre, Dallas, Texas. He managed this airline until 1985 when he floated the Executive Aviation Services (Nig.) Ltd. and nurtured it to a first class cargo airline in Nigeria. As its Chief Executive officer he put into it, his wealth of experience which made remarkable business success of the airline.

Not satisfied with the Air Cargo business alone, he extended his sphere of activities to the Domestic Passenger business by forming Executive Airline Services Ltd. in 1994 specializing in Corporate Charter Services and Executive Aircraft Management with HS 125 Executive Jet. This developed into BAC I II scheduled Domestic Passenger Services with one Boeing 727-200 in 1996. He has built up a fleet of four British Aerospace BAC 1- 11-500 Super Jets on scheduled flight services to Abuja, Jos, Kano, Enugu and Port - Harcourt, with Lagos as hub. He has a dazzling array of professional qualifications, a few of which are listed here:

Nigerian Airline Transport Pilot Licence No.992.

British Airline Transport Pilot Licence No.1 04990

USAlFM Air Transport Rating No.2223411

Rated on B737, B727, B707, DC8, F28, HS-125, BAC1-11 Jet.

NCAA designated Type and Instrument Rating Examiner.
Capt. Wada is active in various national and international (UK and USA) aviation seminars and committees, and holds several management diplomas and certificates to his credit. He obtained from University, of Abuja a B.Sc Degree in Business Administration. He speaks and writes fluently in English, Hausa and Igala. His hobbies are Tennis, Golf, Music, Reading and Current Affairs. He is the Chairman of Aero consult Ltd an approved NCAA Certified Aviation Training Organization (ATO) and Aviation Consultancy Company.

Capt. Wada is not only a good husband and a loving and responsible parent, he is also a philanthropist to the core. He has uplifted many Nigerians through his many poverty alleviation and corporate social responsibility efforts.
As the December 2011 Governorship elections draw near in Kogi state, the sterling qualities possessed by this son of the soil has come to the fore notice of the masses. The people need a man who is possessed of intellect, administrative qualities and experience which surpasses that of the average citizen, a man whose abilities have been proven on a cosmopolitan turf, far beyond the shores of Nigeria. Kogi state cannot be deprived of the opportunities and potentialities dwelling in Capt Idris Wada. He is not just the PDP Governorship aspirant for Kogi state for the December 2011 elections but the best man for the job. In his words Capt Wada said, “I’m a product of a humble background, where the fear of God, hard work, respect for elders and authorities were preached on a daily basis”. “These values ensured that I took my destiny into my own hands right from the tender age of five, and have kept me going up until today, where I stand before you to seek your support. Having being trained by the Federal Government of Nigeria, my commitment to serving my country especially my home state of Kogi is sacrosanct, and this in essence has shaped my character over the years. When you vote for me, it is more than an endorsement of one particular individual. You vote for a vision of how things will be different. How things could be better for you and your family in your local area. We know that all communities are desirous of equal treatment, and as someone who believes in opportunities for all, I will strive to ensure that your communities derive maximum value for your vote.
Fundamentally, I take the public trust embodied by your vote seriously. ”

Thank God for divine providence, thank God for Captain Idris Wada.

Ngor/Okpala: Non Acquisition of Textbooks among Public Schools Students and Other Challenges

Nigerian pupils in the classroom.

Ngor/Okpala: Non Acquisition of Textbooks among Public Schools Students and Other Challenges

By Nwaorgu Faustinus

The role textbooks play in the advancement and enlightenment of humanity cannot be over stressed especially in the education of public and private primary school pupils as well as their secondary school counterparts. Apart from being a veritable source of acquiring knowledge, it also serves as an invaluable medium for preparing public and private school students for both internal and external examinations as they burn the midnight oil in order to make good grades. Furthermore, students consult their textbooks when assignment or homework is given thus playing the role of an assistant in getting the assignment done.

But what has continued to agitate the minds of many observers of the issue at hand is the alarming rate of non possession or rather acquisition of textbooks by public and even private school students in Ngor/Okpala council area. Investigation by this writer showed that few students have Mathematics and English Language textbooks as a result of the importance teachers and parents attach to them. It is not an exaggeration that out of ten randomly picked students, only three or four have Mathematics or English Textbooks not to mention other subjects’ textbooks whose possession have become very rare. A visit to public schools and dispassionate assessment of the numbers of students that have textbooks will surely make the assessor sad.

Question: who is to blame for this state of affairs? No doubt, parents should be the ones to take the bulk of the blame as the provision of textbooks for their wards should be their responsibility. Poverty one of the vicissitudes of life, in addition to other family challenges has been adduced for the inability of most parents to purchase textbooks for the various subjects taught in schools. The situation most times prevent some public school students from solving their take-home assignment as there is no handy textbooks they can use as a guide, assistance or aid to get the assignment done. Often times such homework is left unattended as there is no textbook or willing individual or person knowledgeable that can assist them tackle such academic work.

The various tiers of government should not be excluded from the blame, for there are still public schools that have not received textbooks either from the state government or local government since the inception of democracy in 1999. A visit to some public school libraries will reveal a sad story of indifference by the state government and local government to equip them with contemporary textbooks for the students to use.

No doubt our parents and constituted authorities whose responsibility is to provide textbooks for their wards and public schools especially at the grassroots have failed, taking into cognizance the state of some of the libraries which is best described as abysmal. Needless to say that such state of affairs needs to be reversed for the better. Therefore, a proactive step should be taken by parents, state government and the local government with a view to providing textbooks for students and public schools’ libraries. As an addition, public-spirited individuals, nongovernmental organizations and cooperate organisation touched by the seemingly appalling state of libraries in the council area can donate textbooks as part of their corporate social responsibility

Similarly, the state government led by Governor Owelle Rochas should as a matter of utmost importance employ teachers who will teach some subjects where teachers for such subjects are lacking. The above request has become imperative in view of complaint being made by students of some public secondary schools in the council area.

It is being alleged in some quarters that teachers deployed or transferred to schools that are far and located at the outskirts of some rural communities immediately work their transfer or deployment back to urban-based schools as a result of the availability of social and infrastructural facilities. But for how long will the government continue to tolerate such misdemeanour meted out to rural-based public schools and what is it doing to nip the trend in the bud? It behoves the appropriate authority charged with posting of teachers in rural areas to follow it up to ensure that those posted to rural schools do not influence their posting back to the state capital.

With the present upsurge in the population of public school students, especially in the rural areas brought about by the introduction of free education in Imo State by the current administration of Chief Rochas Okorocha, it has therefore become expedient to send teachers to schools where their services are urgently needed. I remember at the time I did a piece with the title, “Imo State Government: Save Amala/Ntu Secondary School from Total Rot” published in some online media that the above school among other schools need teachers that will teach a number of subjects that has no teachers to teach them. The earlier the state government do this the better.

God bless Ngor/Okpala.

With its roots in an art project, the organization ADOPTED finds African Godparents for Adult Europeans. Ludger has recently become aware of ADOPTED. Frustrated by his emotionally cold environment and isolated from friends and family, he signs up and is immediately chosen. Thelma, on the other hand, waits with impatience for the moment of her departure. A family in Accra (Ghana) has already agreed to be her Godparents and she’s ready to go. Gisela’s decision to leave followed the death of her husband, who left her alone and without prospects. The film highlights the protagonists’ situation observing them as they travel to West Africa where they approach their new Godparents – misunderstandings are, of course, unavoidable.
