Filmmakers Should Have 70% of the Revenues from the Cinemas

Filmmakers should be entitled to 70% of the revenues from the screenings of their movies in cinemas.

I have completed my research on film acquisition, distribution and exhibition in the film industry and after the comprehensive analysis of the economics and metrics for the film industry, I have found that film distributors and exhibitors can give filmmakers seventy percent of the revenues from the box office and still make profit from their cinemas.
Cinemas have multiple streams of revenues, including premium tickets for private screenings and from the concessions for recurrent expenditures.
Revenues can include merchandising sales and adverts (screen and brochure).

I don't need to say more, because the facts are irrefutable.

Florence Yemi Fawaz: So Unforgettable

Florence Ibiyemi 'Yemi' Fawaz

So Unforgettable

Over twenty years ago, I was searching for a place on Adelabu Street in Surulere on the mainland of Lagos, Africa's largest megacity when I met the most beautiful model from Nigeria, Yemi Fawaz in her residence and restaurant, Double 4.  She was the

first Nigerian international supermodel with a career from the 1970s to the 1990s. One of the pioneers of professional modelling in Nigeria. She was also a fashion designer, beauty promoter/consultant, actress, trade show organiser, chef, restaurateur, and deacon.

We became friends. I was attracted by her beauty and she was attracted by my honesty which she said was a rarity among majority of Nigerians. We became closer friends and she wanted me to join her in the management of her restaurant. But I couldn't do so, because I was a vegetarian who would not eat or sell meat to anyone. She thought she could change my mind.

She did for me what nobody ever did when she hosted my only solo salon art exhibition that I did not prepare for. She cooked and served all our invited guests, but when she served me, I openly rejected the food of rice with stew and beef.

"You know I don't eat meat. So, why did you give me a nonvegeterian food?"

She apologized. But she was not happy about it. We became closer. But my vegetarian life and refusal to run the restaurant with her made us to part ways before I left Lagos for Bonny Island on Rivers State in 2004. She had relocated to the United States of America before I left Lagos. She was still in America when I returned to Lagos in 2008. She returned later before she succumbed to colon cancer and passed on to eternal glory on February 20, 2019 at the Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City.

I can never forget Yemi Fawaz.

"Unforgettable

In every way

And forever more

That's how you'll stay."

Naked Beauty

(Celebration of the natural black beauty of an African woman in the Niger Delta of NIgeria)

Extract from the screenplay by Ekenyerengozi Michael Chima and Dr. Chika Christian Onu (Living in Bondage 2, Glamour Girls, Karashika, Peacemaker)

###

Tonye gazes at her and sighs. He has seen so many photographs of nude women and few models have posed for him in the nude in the city. But none of them can be compared to the naked beauty before his very eyes. He feels the overwhelming urge of sexual passion and the bulge in his crotch. But, he resists the temptation and swallowing lumps of saliva he goes to Oma and picks up her wrapper. Tonye wraps the wrapper around Oma to cover her nakedness. He does not want to violate her beauty in the lust of the flesh.

Oma is wondering why Tonye has declined to do what she has expected. To sleep with her since she has willingly surrendered her body to him.

“Not now Oma. Not now,” Tonye says.

“Why?” Oma asks.

“There is time for everything,” Tonye replies.

Psalm 112

1 Praise ye the Lord. Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

2 His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

3 Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.

4 Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness: he is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.

5 A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.

6 Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.

7 He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.

8 His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies.

9 He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.

10 The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.

Poor Reading Culture in NIgeria is Showing in the Poor Screenwriting in Nollywood

Poor Reading Culture in NIgeria is Showing in the Poor Screenwriting in Nollywood

You have to be a good reader before you can be a good writer and you have to be a good writer before you can be a good screenwriter.

You cannot be good in storytelling if you are not good in reading and writing.

I have written about the literature of motion picture.before, but I can bet  that majority of the people in Nollywood and the Nigerian film industry ignored it, because of their intellectual ignorance of the importance.

Majority of the screenplays of NIgerian movies are intellectually deficient in message development and dialogue.

How can someone who doesn't read novels, plays, poems and essays be a good screenwriter?

You can see the evidence of poor intelligence in sentence structure of the dialogue.

You can see the lack of intellectual comprehension in the poor characterization.

In most cases, what we have seen is garbage in and garbage out (GIGO)

You cannot give what you don't have.

Many of the screenwriters in Nollywood are lazy to do research on the historical personalities in the film adaptations of historical biographies such as on Queen Amina of Zaria, Mary Slessor and Madam Tinubu. They end up with poorly researched screenplays for the film and TV productions. But the filmmakers often use good casting, directing and cinematography to cover up the intellectual deficiencies of the screenplays.

Reading is essential for screenwriting in storytelling.

I was the youngest professional scriptwriter in Africa when I started writing for the puppet drama series of the NIgerian Television Authority (NTA) when I was 18 years old and I wrote for four years. Before then, I was already a notable young writer interviewed by the Times International newsmagazine for my play, "The Prodigal".

Reading improved my intellectual comprehension and literary abilities in creative writing and scriptwriting.
