Clinton Condemns Anti-Islam Film, Subsequent Violence

WASHINGTON, September 14, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton condemned an anti-Islam film that has spurred protests across the Middle East, saying, "this video is disgusting and reprehensible." (See transcript

"It appears to have a deeply cynical purpose to denigrate a great religion and to provoke rage," Clinton said in remarks at the start of the U.S.-Morocco Strategic Dialogue in Washington September 13, 2012.


But Clinton added that "there is no justification, none at all, for responding to this video with violence. We condemn the violence that has resulted, in the strongest terms. And we greatly appreciate that many Muslims in the United States and around the world have spoken out on this issue."


Clinton told journalists at the pre-conference briefing that violence has no place in religion and is not the way to honor religion or religious faith. Her remarks follow in the aftermath of protests that began in Cairo, Egypt, on September 11 and have since spread to other nations following the release of a 14-minute anti-Islam video trailer on the Internet.


"Islam, like other religions, respects the fundamental dignity of human beings, and it is a violation of that fundamental dignity to wage attacks on innocents," Clinton said. "As long as there are those who are willing to shed blood and take innocent life in the name of religion, the name of God, the world will never know a true and lasting peace."


Clinton also emphasized in her brief remarks that America has always been committed to religious freedom and tolerance since the beginning of the nation. It is a fundamental belief so strong in the American people that it is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution's Bill of Rights.


"We are home to people of all religions, many of whom came to this country seeking the right to exercise their own religion, including, of course, millions of Muslims," she added. President Obama in remarks September 12 at the White House said that in the United States there is a mosque in every state in the nation, and more than 1,200 mosques within the borders of the United States, illustrating the strong presence of the Islamic faith.


Specific to the inflammatory film, Clinton said that the United States government had nothing to do with the production of the anti-Islam video and that "we absolutely reject its content and message."


On September 11 in Libya, extremists attacked the U.S. mission in Benghazi with machine guns, mortars and rocket-propelled grenades after protests over the film began in Cairo. In that attack, four U.S. diplomats, including Ambassador John Christopher Stevens and Foreign Service Officer Sean Smith, were killed.


Clinton said that it is "especially wrong for violence to be directed against diplomatic missions. These are places whose very purpose is peaceful, to promote better understanding across countries and cultures."

The Nigerian Film Corporation (NFC) is excited about the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) award to two Nigerian motion picture practitioners by the President and Commander-in-Chief, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR). They are Teco Benson and Peace Anyiam-Osigwe.

Reacting to a release on Monday September 10, 2012 by the Federal Government, the NFC was elated that Senators Ayogu Eze and Zainab Kure who bagged the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), and Ambassador S.O. Willoughby, Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), respectively, made the list.

In a statement, Afolabi Adesanya, Managing Director/Chief Executive of the apex film agency, the NFC, said, ‘’again the industry is being recognised for her tremendous contributions to the development of the Creative Arts economy of Nigeria’’. The motion picture industry, he said, has also boosted the profile of Nigeria within the comity of nations, describing the recognition as not only apt, but encouraging.

Teco Benson and Peace Anyiam-Osigwe bagged the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) award.

The Nigerian Film Corporation, and indeed Nigeria’s motion picture professionals, Adesanya further said, are challenged by these recognitions, for according to him, “it takes contributions of both the private sector and government to ensure sustainable growth within the film sector”.

Teco Benson, an actor, producer and director launched into movie making in 1994. To his credit include, Suicide Mission, Scores to Settle, State of Emergency, Mission to Nowhere, The Senator and many more.

Peace Anyiam- Osigwe, known as Industry Energizer, has been promoting the Nigerian and by extension the African Cinema through her pet projects, Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) and African Film Academy (AFA). To her credit include; Blind Date, Sons of Thunder, Messenger of Doom, and The Preachers Daughter and Laviva.

Ayogu Eze (CON), a Senator of the Federal Republic since 1999, was a one time Special Adviser and later, Special Assistant to the Governor of Enugu State. He was Commissioner of Information, Enugu State. He has also served on the Senate Committees on Police Affairs, National Planning, Federal Character & Inter-Government Affairs and later as Chairman, Senate Committee on Information.

Senator Zainab Kure (CON) was the former First Lady of Niger State.(1999-2007). During her tenure she brought succour and comfort to the youths and women of Niger State through her pet project- the Youth Empowerment Scheme (YES). The YES project elevated the economic status of youths and women of Niger State, including vulnerable children who needed attention and empowerment. At the National Assembly, her sustained support for legislations on economic empowerment and poverty alleviation programmes is second to none. Senator Kure’s impact is already being felt within the Nigerian motion picture sector with her membership of the Senate Committee on Information.

Senators Eze and Kure, as members of the Senate Committee on Information, have leveraged their positions to provide invaluable support for the continual growth of the Nigerian motion picture sector.

Ambassador S.O. Willoughby’s (OON) input, as Deputy Chief Executive Officer, NEPAD, towards the development of Nigeria’s roads, telecommunications and trans-border cooperation’s among African countries is worthy of note. The Nigerian motion picture industry, no doubt benefitted immensely from Ambassador Willoughby wealth of experience during his tenure as the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Information.

How to Create Millions of Jobs for Millions of Jobless Nigerians

It is frightening that over 33 million Nigerians are jobless according to the. National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The fears of the uncertain future of these multitudes of unemployed Nigerians who are mostly youths should trouble the mind of every concerned citizen of Nigeria, because they are easy recruits for the gangs of armed robbers, drug and human traffickers, kidnappers, prostitutes, terrorists and other dysfunctional humans of the lunatic fringe destroying lives and properties in the country.

Al Jazeera also raised the dangers of millions of jobless Nigerians in Nigeria: the young and the jobless: Nigeria grapples with increasing unemployment and a growing population.



Are these millions of Nigerians jobless, because there are no jobs or they are not employable?

Employers in the formal sector complain that many of the graduates of Nigerian tertiary institutions are unemployable!
“They just have degrees without skills and we have to spend more money and time to retrain them for the jobs in banks, insurance companies and oil companies,” said a HR Consultant.

This problem is caused by the collapse of the infrastructure of higher education in Nigeria and the falling standards have forced over 100, 000 Nigerians to prefer Ghanaian tertiary institutions at an annual cost of over N160 billion which is more than Nigeria’s annual budget for education in 2011!

Then 800 companies have been shut down in Nigeria due to harsh and insecure operating environment according to the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA). Of course the employees of the affected companies are included in the 33 million jobless Nigerians. But again, it is really questionable if 33 million Nigerians are jobless in an economy heavily based on the informal sector, because many of those who cannot be employed in the formal sector are often having occupations in the informal sector. In fact the informal sector contributes more to manpower of the Nigerian economy than the formal sector. The hundreds of thousands of traders in the market and on the street, the thousands of artisans in the nooks and crannies of every community, the thousands of farmers in the rural areas without any registered business name but are still supplying food crops and cash crops to feed the Nigerian population from the Niger Delta to Lake Chad and millions of others engaged in different occupations to make ends meet make up the informal sector and without them, the economy will collapse.

For the millions who are still jobless and have become the liabilities of those with jobs, what are we going to do?
Any jobless person is a liability of the family, community and society at large.
What is the government doing to end the embarrassment and predicament of millions of jobless Nigerians?

The administration of President Goodluck Jonathan launched the laudable Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWiN) competition aimed at job creation by encouraging and supporting aspiring entrepreneurial youth in Nigeria to develop and execute business ideas. But how many jobs can the lucky 1,200 YouWiN! Awardees create after they were celebrated at the Presidential Villa on April 12, 2012?
I doubt if they can even create up 500, 000 jobs within a year?
The government should publish a list of all their startups and the numbers of jobs they can create to address the emergency of the estimated 33 million jobless hungry and angry Nigerians who are threatening the peace and stability of the rest of the citizens.

I have never been jobless, because I refused to be jobless by attending free workshops for self employment and created jobs for myself. Whenever I could not get a regular job in the formal sector, I always joined those in the informal sector. I have sold books from office to office and from street to street on Bonny Island in Rivers State and earned over N1, 000 daily and later employed a young school leaver to sell books and magazines for me at the Tejuosho Market in Lagos, Nigeria.
It would be good to let you know more about my professional background.
Now, let me address this problem from my own perspective and experience.

At age 17 I earned my first salary as a TV drama puppeteer for the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Channel 10, Lagos. At 21, I got another job as a public health illustrator for the Johns Hopkins University’s Population Communication Services (JHU/PCS) now Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs. At 24, I was employed as the Arts Editor of Kiddies World magazine with an office in the high rising Western House on Broad Street and at 25 I got another job as a national Program Consultant with United Nations Children's Fund – UNICEF in Nigeria and also got other formal jobs afterwards. My last salary job was as the Production Manager of Money Wise, an independent business magazine on DBN TV in Lagos, Nigeria, and I resigned in 2000 to register and launch my own King of Kings Books International with a seed grant from Dr. Mike Okonkwo, the Presiding Bishop of the Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM) when I was still under 38. I have added another duly incorporated digital news and information media network and an open air cinema company to take cinemas to every conducive and receptive community in Nigeria.

Millions of Nigerians who are jobless are either lazy or ignorant of the numerous opportunities and possibilities in Nigeria, because there are millions of jobs for millions of jobless Nigerians.

Where are the millions of jobs?
Let me show you where they are.

Look at many of the thousands of goods imported into Nigeria from overseas?
Many of them can be produced by jobless Nigerians!

Do you know how many millions of Duvet Covers, Duvets, Bedspreads and pillowcases are imported annually in Nigeria?

Do you know that millions of middle class and upper class Nigerians use Duvets and each one is sold between N5, 000 and N12, 000?
Do you know how many billions of naira we spend on the annual importation of these products?

Do you know that Nigerians can produce them from local textile materials?
The local textile materials of Adinkra, Adire, Aso oke, Kente and Batik made by local folks in the rural areas are very good for making the following imported goods.

• Duvets
• All Seasons Duvets
• Pillows
• Pillow Protectors
• Mattress Protectors
• Mattress Toppers
• Duvet Covers
• Fitted Sheets
• Flat Sheets
• Pillowcases
• Valances

Unemployed Nigerians can start Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in their respective local government areas to make bed linens, duvets, duvet covers, valances and pillowcases for homes, dormitories and hostels all over Nigeria. Ghanaian entrepreneurs are already doing so and even exporting bed sheets and pillowcases to countries overseas. There are over 10 million Nigerians in the Diaspora who will appreciate using made in Nigeria duvets, pillowcases, bed sheets, valances, curtains etc; of local textile materials of Adinkra, Adire, Aso oke, Kente and Batik.

Jobs will be created for thousands of textile designers, textile print-makers, packers, tailors, suppliers and traders in every community in Nigeria and export them to Nigerians and others overseas.

There are also more jobs waiting for young school leavers in the book industry.
What kinds of jobs are available for school leavers in the book industry?
Book distribution is a major headache in Nigeria and that is why they say that Nigerians don’t read. That is why President Goodluck Jonathan launched the Bring Back the Book campaign to attract majority of Nigerians to appreciate reading not only to pass academic and professional examinations, but for their pleasure, intellectual development and general enlightenment.

Book pirates make millions of naira from the literary works of others. But book publishers and book sellers can stop them by simply investing more money and time on book distribution from the traditional book stores to the streets, by taking books to their target readers in their homes and workplaces.

A diligent young school leaver can sell between 30 to 100 copies of a book daily at motor parks and markets where readers can be found among the crowds of travelers at the motor parks and among the traders and buyers in every local market. This was how the popular Onitsha Market Literature flourished in the good old days and helped in the cultivation of the buoyant reading culture of the 1960s and 70s when both children and adults in Nigeria bought and read story books in millions of copies.
The book industry in the United States of America generates over $20 billion annually and the Nigerian book industry can generate billions of dollars if there is good book distribution.

Book sellers or book distributors should employ young school leavers of employment age as book vendors to sell books at motor parks, offices, clubs and local markets. 1, 000 book vendors can sell up to 1, 000, 000 copies of books monthly.
There are other opportunities for job creation and self employment for millions of jobless Nigerians to produce thousands of products that we have been spending millions of dollars importing overseas. These products can be made in Nigeria by Nigerians for Nigerians and foreigners in Nigeria and other countries. So, let us start creating jobs from these opportunities and stop whining about the failures of the government to provide jobs for millions of jobless Nigerians.

Nigerian born Adeyemi Ajao been described as the Mark Zuckerberg of Spain. He is regarded as the first African ever to sell his startup for $100 million on August 4, 2010, when Telefonica took controls of 85% of Ajao’s Tuenti, an invitation-only private social network site for students and young people in Spain. Tuenti popularly called “Spanish Facebook” was started by Adeyemi Ajao at 22 and four of his friends. Tuenti has over 14 million users and is the largest Invite-Only network in the world.


Tuenti, which in Spanish comes from "tu enti[dad]" meaning your identity sounds like Twenty in English. It is rated as one of the fastest growing social network sites. Tuenti features many tools common to social-networking sites. It allows users to set up a profile, upload photos, link videos and connect with friends; recently a chat application has been added. Many other utilities, such as the ability to create events, are also offered. Unlike similar social network sites which feature banner advertisements, Tuenti has opted out of these traditional forms of "noisy" and obstructive advertising.

Zaryn Dentzel, one of its founders and current CEO, stated that they intend to focus on Spanish users more before possibly expanding to other countries.
Adeyemi Ajao was born in southern Spain to a Nigerian father and a Spanish mother. He was in Nigeria for only six years, spent two years in Italy and then moved to Spain when he was nine, growing up in the small beach town called Marbella.
Adeyemi earned a Masters in Finance from Emory, a J.D. from ICADE in Madrid, and an MBA from Stanford, and graduated at the top of his class at each university. He was elected one of the “Top 100 Spaniards of the Year” in 2009, and was invited by the U.S. Congress to the Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama as a representative of the Spanish Commission for Accomplishments in Entrepreneurship.

Adeyemi’s father was one of the first mechanical engineers in Nigeria, who started a steel company in Nigeria. He saw his father fought hard to put his company together, but unfortunately didn’t make it in Nigeria, and left for Italy.

Secretary Clinton Speaks On the Attack in Benghazi

US ambassador Chris Stevens had supported the Libyan revolt that overthrew Moamer Kadhafi, but has now been struck down in an attack by militant forces unleashed after the strongman's fall. Stevens, 52, was killed in an attack on the US consulate in Benghazi late Tuesday by armed Islamists outraged over an amateur American-made Internet video mocking Islam, less than six months after being appointed to his post.

Statement by Secretary Clinton on the Attack in Benghazi

WASHINGTON, September 12, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- I condemn in the strongest terms the attack on our mission in Benghazi today. As we work to secure our personnel and facilities, we have confirmed that one of our State Department officers was killed. We are heartbroken by this terrible loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and those who have suffered in this attack.


This evening, I called Libyan President Magariaf to coordinate additional support to protect Americans in Libya. President Magariaf expressed his condemnation and condolences and pledged his government's full cooperation.


Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet. The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind.


In light of the events of today, the United States government is working with partner countries around the world to protect our personnel, our missions, and American citizens worldwide.

Presently there are over 116 stations, including cable stations in Nigeria.

The impact of private broadcasting has helped in pursuance of mass literacy and democracy in Africa’s most populous nation and thanks to the deregulation of broadcasting in Nigeria in 1992 by the regime of Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd), and the National Broadcasting Commission decree ended the monopoly of the government owned Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

Africa Independent Television (AIT) launched by High Chief, Dr. Raymond Dokpesi, is the first private television in Nigeria and also Africa’s first satellite T.V. station.

I have been following developments in Nigerian TV stations since 1980 to date with opportunities to work as an independent producer for the NTA and also for the private DBN TV and witnessed the progress of public and private televisions in Nigeria.

The fast development of private TV stations in Nigeria is due to the employment of the best trained professionals who left the NTA to work for the private stations. Their departure affected the NTA in terms of the standards of production, because those who replaced them at the NTA could not boast of the professional competence and expertise of their predecessors. So, what the public TV stations lost, the private stations gained.

Of all the leading private TV stations, AIT has proved to be the flagship so far in management and content.

What makes a TV station successful is the quality of the staff and the programmes. Incompetent management cannot produce good programmes. When a TV station is run like a family entertainment boutique or a fraternity club, professionalism will be compromised and standards will definitely fall. Moreover, there are not enough trained professionals to go round the scores of TV stations in the country, so many of them are in the hands of amateurs who would have fared better in other occupations but found their way into TV stations, because of their familiarity with the bosses and cronies.

AIT has been able to operate above board in the employment of TV professionals and you can see the success in the quality of the TV presenters, news anchors, and programme managers and directors. Both on TV and the internet AIT is miles ahead.
Many of the public and private TV stations have bad websites and are losing millions of naira that would have been earned from internet advertising. The popular Iroko TV on the internet started by a young Nigerian Jason Njoku a couple of years ago has more online viewers than the NTA and AIT and generates more advert revenue than the website of any TV station in Nigeria. The audience on the internet is more than the estimated 56.9 million TV viewers in Nigeria. Moreover, majority of Nigerians don’t have power supply to view TV, because of the lack of electricity in the majority of homes in Nigeria. How many poor Nigerians can see TV programmes when there are frequent power outages than regular power supply?


Television production has not improved at the NTA since their best professionals left for the private stations and to make movies for Nollywood. The best TV producers are now busy producing home videos and pursuing more advanced careers where they make more money than their meager salaries when they were working for the NTA. The NTA could boast of being the largest TV network in Africa before the emergence of private TV stations, but not so at the moment, because the AIT has more coverage, mileage and patronage in the world than other Nigerian TV stations.

Candle Lights and Roses Mark Anniversary of 9/11


Many families and relations of the 3,000 people killed when hijacked airliners slammed into New York's World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, are having candlelight vigils at Ground Zero and others also came with roses to mark another Anniversary of 9/11, the 11th one today.

"We owe it to the American people to keep our attention riveted on ensuring we are taking every step to keep the country secure."

"Eleven years after the event, some important 9/11 Commission recommendations have still not been implemented and require immediate attention. We call on the government to build out an interoperable, broadband network for first responders. We encourage Congress to take the steps to reform its oversight of intelligence and national security institutions, and to help those agencies make the changes and confront the challenges that will make them stronger and better. Congress and the administration should remain ever vigilant and exert maximum leadership to ensure terrorists do not acquire nuclear or radiological weapons, a prospect that would be a grave threat to us. And finally, we encourage the administration to put teeth into the Privacy and Civil Liberties Board that the Commission recommended and legislation created. That Board will help ensure that there is a proper balance between the many security measures that have been implemented since 9/11 and our tradition of privacy and civil liberty."
