Statement by the EU Spokesperson on the State Elections in Nigeria

BRUSSELS, 12 March 2019 / PRN Africa / -- Nigerians voted on 9 March to elect Governors and Members of the State Assemblies.

Violent incidents during the process caused the unacceptable loss of many lives. We express our condolences to all those affected. We expect those responsible to be held accountable and brought to justice.

Overall, the elections confirmed the efforts of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to improve the conduct of the electoral process since the presidential poll. Elections were competitive with freedom to campaign.

Nonetheless, the EU Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) noted systemic problems affecting the electoral process, highlighting the need for electoral reforms. INEC reported widespread disruption and violence in Rivers state leading to its decision to suspend the electoral process in the state.

While the tabulation of results is still ongoing, it falls on all political parties, candidates and other stakeholders to show patience and restraint while waiting for INEC to complete the election process. Challenges to the results should be made through the appropriate legal means.

The EU stands ready to continue its support to Nigeria when addressing challenges ahead of future elections including working together on the implementation of the EU EOM recommendations.

The EU remains committed to partnering with Nigeria and its people.
