Christians and Muslims To Work Together in Nigeria
GENEVA, 29 September 2015 / PRN Africa / -- Key stakeholders in a new inter-religious centre in Nigeria have met to plan for the centre and its work, set to launch in March 2016.
The meeting was held at the Ecumenical Institute in Bossey, Switzerland, 27 to 28 September.
Institutions represented were the Jordanian Royal Aal Al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought (RABIIT), the World Council of Churches (WCC), the Christian Council of Nigeria (CCN) and Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI).
The project has developed as a result of a high-level international inter-religious visit to Nigeria by representatives of the WCC and RABIIT in 2012.
Speaking about the significance of the project, Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the WCC, said, “Muslims and Christians can, through this initiative, hear each other's stories, share each other's pain, and begin to heal. This centre is a significant common project for Muslims and Christian leaders in Nigeria and a pioneering work in inter-religious encounter.”
Attendees shared their vision for the work of the centre, which is intended to act as an impetus for healing and reconciliation in Nigeria, given the recent incidents of conflict in the country. The governance, management and programme of the centre are intended to model Nigerian Christians and Muslims working together on issues of concern to all Nigerians.
The evocative phrase “In the sandals of the other” was proposed as a descriptive title for the centre. In the first year of its operation, the centre will work on supporting victims of violence who are suffering from trauma, with a particular focus on women and young people. It will also share examples of people working together to support each other across religious boundaries, as well as beginning substantial data collection.
Participants of the meeting included Dr Khalid A Abubakar, Ms Lamya Al-Khraisha, Dr Clare Amos, Dr Usman Muhammad Bugaje, Mr Sulayman Hart, Dr Gina Lende, Rt Rev. Prof Emele Mba Uka, Rev. Dr Yusuf Ibrahim Wushishi, Dr Yakubu Joseph and Ms Marietta Ruhland.

Terrorism Most Immediate Problem for New Nigerian Government, President Buhari Tells UN
YORK, 28 September 2015 / PRN Africa / -- The new Nigerian Government has many issues to contend with but none as important as defeating the terrorist threat posed by Boko Haram and bringing back the Chibok girls unharmed, the country's President declared at the United Nations General Assembly today.
“Boko Haram's war against the people of Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon may not attract as much worldwide attention as the wars in the Middle East but the suffering is just as great and the human cost is equally high,” Muhammadu Buhari said in his address to the Assembly's high-level debate.
Stating that Nigerians are on the front lines of the war on terror, he said the battle is between progress and chaos; between democracy and the rule of law.
“Boko Haram celebrates violence against the weak and the innocent and deplorably, they hide behind their perverted interpretation of Islam. Boko Haram is as far away from Islam as anyone can think of.”
Mr. Buhari, who was elected President in March, informed fellow world leaders that the new Government is attacking the problems it inherited head-on.
“We intend to tackle inequalities arising from massive unemployment and previous government policies favouring a few people to the detriment of the many. We intend to emphasize quality technological education for development and lay foundation for comprehensive care of the aged, the disadvantaged and the infirm.
“But for now, terrorism is the immediate problem,” he stressed.
The President outlined a number of steps being taken, adding that Nigeria and her neighbours Cameroon, Chad and Niger plus Benin are working together to face this common threat within the regional framework of the Lake Chad Basin Commission.
“We have established a multinational joint task force to confront, degrade and defeat Boko Haram. We have driven them away from many of their strongholds, killed or captured many of their operatives or commanders and freed several hundreds of hostages.
“One of our major aims is to rescue the Chibok girls alive and unharmed. We are working round the clock to ensure their safety and eventual reunion with their families. Chibok girls are constantly on our minds and in our plans,” he stated.
Some 276 girls were abducted by Boko Haram from their school in Chibok, located in Nigeria's restive north-eastern Borno state, in April 2014, as the militant group ramped up brutal attacks targeting the country's children. Some 200 of the girls were released from captivity in April of this year.

On behalf of the jury members I welcome you to the AMAA 2015 Awards. Over the last 11 years, the AMAA Awards has set itself the challenging but rewarding task of celebrating the best of our continent and its Diaspora’s filmmaking.
To this end, our aim has always been to reward and encourage African originality in film production; to seek out and bring attention to the continent’s unique and distinctive talents; to champion her distinctive voices and to encourage and nurture that rare combination of ambition and originality that is the best of our movie making.
Every year, hundreds of films from across the continent and its Diaspora arrive at the AMAA offices. This year we received close to 800 movie entries from over 60 countries, mostly within Africa and also from around the world. This unprecedented number of entries, in all categories and from many African diaspora countries and communities. can lead only to this conclusion: AMAA is indeed, a truly Pan-African event and a global brand.
It is significant that this year for the first time in AMAA’s history, the nominations event was held in the African Diaspora, in Los Angeles: and that the Awards themselves are held outside of Nigeria, here in South Africa.
And after our several weeks and months of consultations, we commend to you tonight, our roll call of the best for 2015.
