Nollywood Diva Kate Henshaw To Co-host Nigerian Premiere of Girl Rising

Kate Henshaw.

Kate Henshaw, the famous Nollywood diva will bring her star power to the Nigerian premiere of groundbreaking CNN film Girl Rising, on Friday October 11, 2013, to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child at the Silverbird Cinemas, Silverbird Galleria on Victoria Island, Lagos.

Kate Henshaw will co-host the premiere of "Girl Rising" featuring Hollywood stars Freida Pinto, Anne Hathaway, Selena Gomez, Alicia Keys, Meryl Streep, Salma Hyak, Cate Blanchett, Kerry Washington, Priyanka Chopra, Chloe Moretz, and Liam Neeson who narrated this must see film.

The Nigerian premiere has attracted both local and international partners and supporters, including Zonta International, United Nations Information Center, Nigerians Report Online, Kiddies and Brands Company, Dobox TV and others.

“No one is more vulnerable than an uneducated girl,” said Freida Pinto.
"And this film is a wake-up call to world that it’s time to educate girls".
“Right now, 66 million girls are not in school, 14 million girls fewer than 18 will be married this year, that’s 38,000 girls married today, and 13 girls married in the last 30 seconds.”

Actress Freida Pinto attending a Vanity Fair and L’Oréal Paris-presented event in support of 10x10 and “Girl Rising” Feb. 19, 2013, in Los Angeles. (Getty Images).

Many who have watched the film in the U.S. got tears from the nine survival stories of girls in developing nations. Wadley in Haiti who seeks an education after the powerful earthquake, Ruksana who lives on the side of the street in India, and women in Afghanistan who get married at 11 years old. Each girl was paired with a renowned writer from her native country, and the stories show how education can change lives forever.

Directed by Academy Award-Nominee Director Richard E Robbins with original music is by Academy Award winner Rachel Portman in collaboration with Hans Zimmer, and other notable women supporting "Girl Rising".
“We had a woman DP behind the camera, we had a woman composer writing music, we had women designers doing visual effects, we had a woman editor, a woman producer – we really went out of our way as much as possible to practice what we preach and say let’s put women in power positions in all aspects of this project. With the exception of me, and a couple of other men, we were definitely a powered by women brigade,” said Richard.

The "Girl Rising" produced by 10x10 is more than a film as it is part of a global campaign to educate and empower girls.

“Our vision is to connect every person on earth so when you think about that, with millions of girls who don’t have access to education, we can’t achieve our vision. Even beyond that piece, it just really began to bother us that girls were being left behind, which meant their families were being left behind, their communities were being left behind and we are a global company of global citizens – and what happens to a girl in Peru, in Haiti impacts girls here in the United States," said Rosalind Hudnell, Chief Diversity Officer, Global Director of Education & External Relations at Intel Corporation, one of the co-sponsors of "Girl Rising".

“Girl Rising” has sold over 125,000 tickets in the U.S alone.

UNESCO CHIEF CALLS ON EGYPTIAN AUTHORITIES TO INVESTIGATE DEATH OF THREE JOURNALISTS

NEW YORK, 26 August 2013 / PRNewswire Africa / -The head of the United Nations agency tasked with defending press freedom today denounced the deaths of three Egyptian journalists and called for a thorough investigation into these incidents.

"I deplore the deaths of Ahmed Abdel Gawad, Mosab Al-Shami and Tamer Abdel Raouf," said the Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Irina Bokova., calling on Egyptian authorities "to do everything possible to ensure the security of media workers."

Ms. Bokova expressed her distress and concern over the violence directed against the media in Egypt, where five media professionals have been killed while carrying out their duties in the span of a few days.
According to Reporters Without Borders, Mr. Gawad, a reporter for the Egyptian daily Al-Akhbar, and Mr. Al-Shami, a photojournalist for Rassd News Network, were killed on 14 August while covering demonstrations in the capital, Cairo. Both died from gunshot injuries.

Mr. Raouf was the regional director of Egypt's Al-Ahram newspaper. He was shot dead at a vehicle checkpoint in Damanhur, in the Beheira Governorate in northern Egypt, on 19 August. Another journalist in the car, Hamed Al-Barbari, was injured.

Ms. Pillay also condemned today the murder of Pakistani journalist Haji Abdul Razzak and Guatemalan journalist Carlos Alberto Orellana Chávez.

Who Shot The Photographer?

News From ImageBrief.com; Who Shot The Photographer?

Industry Forces That Could Spell The Extinction Of The Professional Photographer

With The Reduction of Barriers to Entry, Copyright Infringement, And Stock Libraries Paying As Low As 20%, Photography Professionals Are Looking Elsewhere For Their Income

NEW YORK, Aug. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Being a professional photographer in 2013 is not what it used to be.  With easy access to professional cameras causing a major reduction to barrier of entry in the industry, rampant online copyright infringement and stock libraries paying out as little as 20 percent commissions, many photography professionals are looking elsewhere for their income.

According to new findings from ImageBrief, the world's first image-request platform using crowdsourcing, as technology has advanced in recent years high-quality digital cameras are allowing more and more enthusiasts to become 'pro-sumers' thereby flooding the market with competition.  There are over 7 million photo enthusiasts in the US and at least 85% of households own a digital camera. The competition for selling images has become more intense, with hundreds of millions of images in stock libraries and growing. With one-third of the photographers in the US turning to these libraries as a primary source of income the need for these resources to pay them for their work is instrumental to keeping the photographers in business.
"Our hope is that the industry will begin to make some changes to allow room for more creative people to make their living through photography," says Simon Moss, CEO of ImageBrief.  "If we are fair with the talent, we will promote better work and from that I believe, more customers and a flourishing industry."

About ImageBrief:
ImageBrief is a world-first online marketplace connecting creative and marketing professionals to a curated network of more than 7,500 high-quality professional photographers in 115 countries. Buyers simply post a brief for an image requirement and photographers respond by submitting images tailored to the buyer's request. Mr. Kidnapper(s), Ozekhome is the Last Person You Want To Abduct

Mr. Ozekhome.

Mr. Kidnapper(s), Ozekhome is the last Person you want to Abduct, here is why

As you may know our brother, Mike Ozekhome, in the last two decades, at least by international standards is one of the most prominent and loudest human rights voice in West Africa, Nigeria in particular.

The reason for this is clear. With his legal voice he has engaged in targeted attacks against poverty, inequality, joblessness and injustice that continue to threaten the people and trigger behaviors like what you are putting him through right now.

Ask him questions about his work, about his pronouncements and his protests, you will notice a man constantly clashing with the government be it the military or civilian for causes that go far  beyond personal gain; instead for groups’ interest like those of the youths and others in a state of struggle.

Thank goodness for his personal success but his fight against corruption, political mismanagement, financial waste, tribal disputes and the lack of aid for the average Nigerians is something we need more of.

He is called a radical because he talks and writes aggressively against the exploitation of the average person.

There is a possibility that he might even give you his last penny, dance, eat, sing, cry and bleed with you, because that is his nature!

He will assure you that there will be no revenge towards you once you let him go only because he has constantly warned the power-that-be that they are to be blamed for problems like the one both of you are in right now.

I know many of you are educated about the news from the print and internet media, just read about what the international world is saying about this man in the last 20 years.

Just the other day, for the sake of the nation and the average Nigerian, he told the world of a nation in crisis and about the current detriment of the common people.

He stated, “Less than one percent of the populace is eating the entire wealth meant for over 156. 5 million people and that is why Nigeria is not developing. When you use 85 percent of your national budget on recurrent expenditure rather than on capital project, and most of the money is channeled to massage the egos of people in power? “What is the business of a minister moving around in a convey of 12 to 15 cars? In America, they are called Secretaries, and they drive themselves. “Here in Nigeria, when a Senator is moving, he goes with siren and no fewer than 15 vehicles…So you find out that we are always spending more than our budget and that is why we are getting to a stage, where we may be broke, the synopsis and the prognosis are that Nigeria may be broke and when Nigeria is broke, there will be trouble because it will affect not only Nigeria but the entire West African and African regions.”

Is this the type of man that the nation, his family and the world will no longer have access to because of you? Therefore, let him go, now!

In conclusion, be rest assured that Ozekhome will defend you personally and negotiate with the police and the court to protect your rights as that is the type of person you now have in your custody. May be you did not mean to get into a shoot-out with the police who were called by witnesses but things happen, and it is only proper that you make it your responsibility to protect him and release Ozekhome now, as you and me will need his voice again, and again on behalf the citizens of this country, called Nigeria.

TD Ameritrade Institutional Awards Scholarships to Foster New Generation of Financial Planners

TD Ameritrade aims to attract new talent to the industry, address looming advisor shortage

Jersey City, N.J., Aug. 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — In an effort to help attract a new generation of professionals to the investment advisory industry, TD Ameritrade Institutional has awarded its inaugural scholarships to 10 deserving and talented students enrolled in undergraduate financial planning programs.

LtoR: Chris Johnson, Texas Christian Univ., Josh Landau, Univ. of San Diego, Eric Siss, Virginia Tech, Tom Nally and Fred Tomczyk, TD Ameritrade, Kelsey Brooks, Univ. of Georgia, Kelly McNerney and Kayla-Lynn Kasica, William Paterson Univ.

The jobs market may be recovering in fits and starts, but there is strong demand for professionals who can help Americans manage their household finances, according to the latest Occupational Outlook Handbook produced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (“BLS”).1 This demand is expected to climb as more than 75 million Baby Boomers enter retirement and more investors seek advice.

At the same time, the country’s ranks of brokers and investment advisors are shrinking, according to industry research firm Cerulli Associates2. An aging population of advisors, many Baby Boomers themselves, is nearing retirement without a ready supply of advisors to fill their shoes.

So to help head-off a potential talent shortage and encourage more students to pursue financial planning careers, TD Ameritrade established an annual Next Generation Scholarship Program earlier this year. The 2013 recipients, listed below, are the first to receive scholarship awards valued at $5,000:
Kelsey Brooks
University of Georgia
Christopher Johnson
Texas Christian University
Kayla-Lynn Kasica
William Paterson University
Eric Siss
Virginia Tech University
Joshua Landau
University of San Diego
Morgan McGovern
Virginia Tech University
Kelly McNerney
William Paterson University
Andrew Milling
William Paterson University
Delroy Stauffer
University of South Carolina-Columbia
Phillip Murphy
SUNY College of Technology at Alfred
This Scholarship Program, combined with an annual $50,000 grant program to encourage more colleges and universities to offer financial planning degree programs, will provide $1 million over the next decade to expand the number of graduates pursuing careers in the financial services industry.
“This is an industry that is facing a critical talent shortage at a time when the need for financial advice is on the rise,” said Tom Nally, president, TD Ameritrade Institutional. “By supporting students like these, we look to help cultivate the next generation of financial professionals.”

With graduates facing uncertain job prospects, financial planning represents a potential oasis of opportunity. The projected growth rate for financial advisors in the decade ending 2020 is 32 percent, compared with 14 percent for all occupations, according to the BLS report. That translates to 66,000 new financial advisor jobs.

Demand for financial advice is expected to rise, as investors stung by the 2008 financial crisis seek professionals to help them make sense of the markets. A growing share of investors, the Cerulli research shows, has been migrating to independent registered investment advisors and financial planners.
“I am always seeking top talent for our firm, but I’m also looking forward and considering who will be caring for them over the next 20 or 30 years,” said David Kudla, CEO and Chief Investment Strategist of Mainstay Capital Management and a member of TD Ameritrade Institutional’s Next Generation Advisory Board. “I see a real need for our industry to step up efforts to support and engage a new generation.”

Yet financial planning is not a popular career choice among students, according to a recent survey by the National Society of High School Scholars.3 TD Ameritrade’s scholarship program intends to show more college students that a career in financial planning can be satisfying beyond monetary reward, offering an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of families and individual investors.

Joshua Landau, soon starting his senior year at the University of San Diego, said that “Being an independent financial advisor will allow me to combine my entrepreneurial and financial goals to make the greatest impact I can.”
“Financial advisors have the potential to make a huge difference in a client’s life by providing them with confidence about their finances,” said Kelsey Brooks, entering her senior year at the University of Georgia. “I want to be that person in my client’s life, someone they can rely on for straightforward advice.”
To celebrate their achievement, scholarship winners traveled to New York City as guests of TD Ameritrade for a visit to Wall Street, where they enjoyed VIP tours of the Museum of American Finance and the famed trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange.

Half Baked Educated People Cannot Speak For Igbos

Ohaneze Stance on Deportation of Igbos: Joe Igbokwe Reacts again

Following Thursday’s online news reports concerning Ohaneze Ndigbo leadership reaction over Lagos deportation saga, the spokesman of defunct ACN and head of Lagos State Infrastructure Maintenance & Regulatory Agency (LASIMRA), Joe Igbokwe, in another reaction received via e-mail believes that Ohaneze is thinking strategically. Hear him.
From Joe Igbokwe.

I do not want to join issues with all those who have rendered a veritable tool Oyibo people invented to help humanity almost nugatory by engaging into tribal verbal wars here. Over the years I have watched these foolish engagements by people sufficiently educated to know better but have chosen to play Ostrich. Igbo must think about Strategic interest always. People that were taken to the North are less human, those taken South West are less human, those taken to Ebonyi and Akwalbom in 2011 by Gov Obi are less human abi? nkem di iche bu ajo aha. Honest intellectuals in Igboland must pull the rug away from some people who create enemies for Ndigbo in this forum at the drop of a hat. The crippled cannot be the akwaa akwulu Ndigbo. The blind cannot be the anya Ndigbo ji ahu uzo in Nigeria. Half baked educated people cannot speak for Ndigbo. The nonsensical effusions going on here in the name of the so- called deportation in Lagos is a misnomer, an aberration, reprehensible and a basket case. A man going to the market to buy basket knows that he is not going to use it to store water. The man selling the basket knows also that the buyer cannot use it to store water. A word is enough for the wise . Ohaneze is thinking. Ohaneze understands the game. Ohaneze can get it. Case rested!-Joe Igbokwe.

Below is the earlier report of Ohaneze Stance on Deportation of Igbos

Ohaneze Urges Restraint over Deportation of Igbos-Describes Yorubas as Allies
Ohaneze Ndgbo have urged for restraint in the responses from Igbos over the issue of their deported sons and daughters on the orders of Lagos State Government. The group also called for restraint in the ongoing Igbos-Yoruba hate comments to avoid unnecessary tension in the polity. This was stated by the Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Dr Joe Nwaorgu during a briefing with group of clergymen led by Rev Obinna Akukwe who sought clarification on the crisis ridden state of Ndigbo at Enugu, yesterday.

The Ohaneze leader said that he had spoken personally with Governor Fashola over the issue and heard the other side of the story. Dr Nwaorgu also informed the clergymen that the President of Igbo Community in Lagos, Prof Anya .O. Anya was earlier instructed to get in touch with Fashola over the issue and that the Governor personally drove to Anya's house where he clarified with them on the issue. Describing the deportation of anybody in Nigeria, not just Igbos, as morally unjustifiable and legally wrong, he said that destitutes should be rehabilitated instead and not dehumanized. He said that Igbos and Yorubas are not at war and advised against hateful incitements by attention seeking politicians from both sides.

The Ohanaeze leader also said that the body had not authorized anybody to speak on its behalf concerning 2015 presidential elections and revealed that the decision on who to support will be taken on the last day of the 2013 Igbo Day Celebrations scheduled for September 24-27th. He discountenanced reports in a newspaper last Sunday that Ohaneze was part of an earlier summit insisting on Igbo presidency and said that options are still open to Ndigbo.

In the same vein the Secretary of Electoral Committee in the January 12th Ohaneze controversial election Dr Mrs Felly Eneh had reiterated that there is no faction in Ohaneze. The woman leader was making veiled references to media reports purportedly sponsored by a presidential aide that a faction of Ohaneze Ndigbo met at Enugu last Saturday, said that''the election of January 12th was legally conducted and those who think otherwise are minority irritants and entitled to their opinion, people are just being sponsored to create confusion''. She condemned the killing of Igbos in Kano and asked government to do proper investigation.

The Assistant National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze and gubernatorial aspirant in Anambra State , Barrister Emejulu Okpalaukwu in his reaction explained that Ohanaeze leadership is engaging the presidency for more security for Igbos especially in Kano and expressed confidence that the quiet diplomacy of the Ohanaeze President General, Chief Nnachi Igariwey would yield tangible results.

Ohaneze leadership had earlier expressed angst that its Kano State Branch President, Chief Tobias Idika is being hunted by Kano State Government and Police Command and warned against any further harassment of the Chapter President. They, however, asked Chief Idika not to make any further public statements on the Kano issue, promising to engage the presidency quietly over the state of Ndigbo in Kano.

The Ime-Obi Ohaneze met last Saturday at Ohaneze Headquarters, Enugu and discussed wide range of issues affecting Igboland. The group, among other issues opposed the grazing bill before the National Assembly and cautioned against ethnicization of the Onitsha head bridge deportation saga. Ohaneze also prohibited state chapters of the group from issuing press statements on national issues without clearance from the national secretariat.

The highly attended Ime-Obi meeting had the presence of Chief Nnachi Igariwey (President General), Dr Joe Nwaorgu( Secretary General) Eze Justice Ozobu ( Past President) , Eze Cletus Ilomuanya( Chairman South East Council of Traditional Rulers), Eze Desmond Ogugua ( Eze of Mbaise), Eze Gibson Nwosu( Ezeuzu of Awka), Eze Njemanze,Dr Dozie Ikedife(Past President),Chief Mbazulike Amechi, Rev Obinna Akukwe,Senator Hope Uzodimma, Prof ABC Nwosu, Eze Ben Nwosu , Barrister Emejulu Okpalaukwu, Nze Mark Odu, Prof S.E Asogwa, among numerous Igbo leaders in attendance.

Voting and Eligibility -Rules & Regulations
All voting will be conducted exclusively online and administered by an independent third party agency.  All votes are 100% confidential and are tabulated without revealing voter identity.  Eligible videos were submitted and accepted by BET for consideration for airplay and online between July 16, 2012 and July 15, 2013.  Other material, including songs and mix tapes, must have been made initially available to the general public during the same period of July 16, 2012 through July 15, 2013 to be eligible for selection.  Additionally, there are eight (8) write-in categories to allow the voting academy an opportunity to nominate at their will those artists who are currently on their radar.  The total number of votes submitted during the voting period for the nominees in each of the eligible categories will be tabulated by the third party agency, and the nominee with the most votes in its applicable category, as determined by BET Networks in its sole discretion, will be declared winner of such category.  In the event of a dispute or tie or if for any other reason BET Networks deems it necessary or appropriate, BET Networks reserves the right to make the final determination as to which of the nominees will be declared the winner of the category.

About Snoop Dogg ("Uncle Snoop")
An entertainment icon and with more than 20 years in the business, Snoop continues to pave the way in the hip-hop industry, serving as a mentor to many new and established artists. Being the trendsetter he is, Snoop stands at the forefront of popular culture with award-winning and multi-platinum albums and songs, critically acclaimed films and television shows, lifestyle products, philanthropic efforts and digital ventures, including his YouTube original series "GGN News."  Snoop defines hip-hop history. He's set records with his seminal album Doggystyle, which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 800,000 copies in the first week. Throughout his career, Snoop's produced chart-topping hits including "Gin & Juice," "Who Am I? (What's My Name?)," "Nuthin' But A 'G' Thang," "Next Episode," "Beautiful," "Drop It Like It's Hot," "Signs," "Sensual Seduction" and "I Wanna Rock."  He continues to awe millions of fans around the world with innovative initiatives, including his recent Coachella performance with longtime friend Dr. Dre and the infamous Tupac hologram, as well as releasing one of the most popular celebrity mobile apps Snoopify, reaching nearly one million users within the first week. Through his film production company, Snoopadelic Films, Snoop has produced an array of movies, including his film with Wiz Khalifa, Mac and Devin Go To High School, featuring the three times platinum and recent Grammy Award Nominee song, "Young, Wild and Free."  Furthermore, he produced his latest Snoopadelic release in conjunction with VICE Media, Reincarnated, which documents Snoop's journey through reggae culture and Jamaica while recording his latest album (of the same title) with executive producer Diplo and Major Lazer.  Snoop's non-profit work in the community is commendable, as he established the Snoop Youth Football League (SYFL) in 2005 to give children between the ages of five and 13 the opportunity to participate in youth football and cheer. SYFL teaches them the values of teamwork, good sportsmanship, discipline, and academics. Today, SYFL boasts 30 teams, more than 1,200 players and over 75 cheerleaders.
