Tap into the China Opportunity at The Canton Fair

TAP INTO THE CHINA OPPORTUNITY AT THE CANTON FAIR

China’s largest trade fair takes on greater role in global economic downturn

GUANGZHOU, China (30 March 2012) /PRNewswire/ — As the United States and Europe grapple with economic uncertainty, the Canton Fair has become an even more essential platform for foreign businesses seeking trade opportunity and new territory for business.

The Canton Fair is the largest trade fair in China, drawing the best of Chinese manufacturers and more than 2,000 foreign companies from over 50 countries every year, including the US, Japan, Germany, Italy and the UK. In response to the global economic crisis, the fair had adapted in recent years to present new opportunities for foreign and Chinese businesses, as well as buyers.

“A restructuring global economy offers opportunities for trade, as well,” Zhong Shan, China’s Vice Minister of Commerce, said in a recent speech. “When preparing for the Canton Fair we have to follow the notion of scientific development and the ‘Steady Growth, Adjust Trade Structure and Promote Trade Balance’ policy to seize the opportunities and take on the challenges.”

The 111th session of the Canton Fair comes at an ideal time for foreign businesses as the Chinese government has also decided to boost imports to achieve a more equitable trade balance as part of its 12th five-year plan.

Luigi Capretto, owner of a Italian company called Foccacia Tech which makes bespoke air-conditioning units, says his business has boomed since he first started exhibiting at the 2004 Canton Fair, a year after first visiting as a buyer. “The Canton Fair put me in touch with many Chinese property development companies, architects and designers and now I even manufacture in China,” he says.

Foreign buyers will find plenty of opportunities to connect with Chinese businesses at the fair, as well. Robert ZQB, president of Spectra Cina, Inc., said he first exhibited at the fair in 1994 and now conducts about $50 million worth of business each year as a buyer. “In just 15 days, we can see the best products assembled in China, which makes us feel like we’ve had a travel all around China,” he said.

The 111th session of the Canton Fair will be held from April 15 to May 5 at the China Import and Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou, China.

The Private Schools Scam in Nigeria

A private school in Nigeria.

The Private Schools Scam in Nigeria

The systemic collapse of Nigerian education is no longer news, but from being bad, it is now becoming worse with the recurrent rampant cases of examination malpractices reported at all levels.

The prevailing culture of impunity of the corrupt ruling class is now exhibited by majority of Nigerian children in secondary and tertiary institutions with mass failures recorded in the prerequisite examinations. The most shocking were the last results of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) of 2012. Only 3 candidates of the total 1, 503, 931 who sat for the UTME scored 300 and above! So, the remaining 1, 503, 928 scored less than 300!

The question is why did the students from the so called elitist private schools where prohibitive fees are paid fail to score up to 300?

What happened to their so called world class standards and first class tutors?
Why did they fail to excel and prove that they are better than the public schools?

So, why should these private schools be charging hundred of thousands to even one million naira as annual school fees when they cannot guarantee the success of their students?

Why should parents spend a million naira on the secondary school fees of their child and the child fails to pass the ordinary matriculation examinations in Nigeria?
Therefore they have been ripped off by these private schools. What an open scam?

The fact is these private schools have failed woefully to produce brilliant students and scholars, because majority of their teachers are not certified and qualified to teach!

Instead of producing brilliant whiz kids of scholarship, these dubious private schools are producing whiz kids of hip hop and pornography.

Nigerian students sit for an exam.

These private schools cannot afford world class teachers who are not even available in Nigeria, because the local colleges of education have also collapsed and cannot produce good teachers for Nigerian pupils and students. Majority of the students in the colleges of education were those who failed to gain admission into the polytechnics and universities and their last resort was to go the colleges of education. Moreover, most of them cheated to pass their secondary school certificate examinations before they could gain admission into the colleges of education. Now these students driven by desperation and frustration into the colleges of education would later graduate and get employed by majority of the private schools to teach innocent children of ignorant parents who are hoodwinked and swindled by the proprietors of the private schools to pay exorbitant school fees for what they think is world class secondary school education by operators of private schools who have lied and tricked them by fishing in the troubled waters of the systemic collapse of modern education in Nigeria.

Female hostel on the campus of a Nigerian tertiary school could be mistaken for a refugee camp.

What is going on in private schools in Nigeria is a racket! It another 419 scam by another lunatic fringe of criminally minded Nigerians exploring various get-rich-quick scams to rob the ignorant masses who are always on the receiving end of every corrupt and incompetent administration in Nigeria.

Investigations have shown that majority of the owners of these private schools are the same criminals in the corridors of power and their accomplices in the private sector who have been scamming the Nigerian government and private sector for years and after misappropriating public funds and looting the treasury, they have used their stolen funds to establish private schools and other private ventures to further cheat and exploit the ignorant masses in Nigeria.

They have embezzled the revenue allocations for the ministry of education and deprived the schools of funding for infrastructure and scholarship and as they have caused the collapse of the public schools, they now set up their own private schools to fish in the troubled waters of the victims of their corruption. And in most cases, they don’t even invest in the colleges of education where the majority of their teachers will come from!

The fundamental issues of the private schools scam in Nigeria have already been addressed in my book In the House of Dogs and The Guardian newspaper of Nigeria published a very important extract on January 1, 2012, and the issue of the rot in Nigerian education was clearly noted. Therefore, there is no need for further hue and cry over this well known national disgrace of education in our contemporary policy, but to address it legally and prosecute these criminals who are masquerading as educationists and stakeholders in the development of modern education in Nigeria.

Lincoln Unveils the Future of Chauffeured Transportation

Lincoln Unveils the Future of Chauffeured Transportation

CLINTON, N.J., April 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- In the world of the executive chauffeured transportation industry, the future has arrived – with the introduction of the 2013 Lincoln MKT Town Car! Lincoln has discontinued the classic Lincoln Town Car Sedan in favor of the redesigned and much-improved 2013 Lincoln MKT Town Car. AAA Worldwide Transportation is pleased to announce that it has received 4 of these highly anticipated MKT Town Cars from the very first production line thanks to Jim O'Brien, the Sales Manager at Ditschman/Flemington Ford Lincoln. While the vehicle is sure to reshape the industry landscape, AAA Worldwide Transportation's move to outfit its MKTs with the latest iPads is destined to turn heads and propel its fleet into the fast lane.

The addition of iPads will greatly enhance the passenger's experience and improve efficiency.

While much has been redesigned for the MKT Town Car, the most obvious change is the vehicle's look. The Lincoln MKT Town Car now sports a car/SUV hybrid design to ease entry to- and exit from- the vehicle. The new design and moon roof also make for a more open feel than the previous Town Car. Increased back-seat legroom, rear seats that recline, rear window sun shades, and new controls that allow the passenger access to vehicle controls all make for an improved riding experience. Have an electronic device or two that need charging? No problem. The MKT Town Car boasts a 12 volt outlet, a 110 Volt inverter, and a USB port. Add to this a redesigned trunk space that allows for expanded storage capacity and a 300 horsepower engine and the MKT is sure to have people talking.

We all know that accidents happen, but Lincoln is doing its best to help chauffeurs prevent them. Without a doubt, one of the most notable areas of improvement is the vehicle's numerous safety features. For example, the MKT will be a particularly pleasant arrival for the northeast thanks to standard all-wheel drive, as opposed to the previous rear-wheel equipped Town Car. This will help navigate through the blustery winters and snow-covered roads, keeping both passenger and the chauffeur safe. The lane departure warning and blind-spot detection systems aid safety on the roads, while the Cross-Traffic Alert system is perfect for traffic detection in parking lots and at intersections. The MKT is also equipped with a rear-view camera that alerts the chauffeur to unforeseen objects when reversing. However, with chauffeurs spending so much time on the road, one of the more interesting additions is the driver alert system, which uses the chauffeur's own driving to provide an alertness rating on a six point scale. This can help the chauffeur to determine when some rest might be needed.

AAA Worldwide Transportation is proud to present what it considers to be the most advanced executive chauffeured transportation vehicle ever made thanks to its own proprietary after-market technology enhancements. In addition to the numerous factory-installed technology improvements, AAA will outfit the first of its 4 MKTs with the latest iPads. AAA has created its own back-office software application that will allow its chauffeurs to report directly to the office via an iPad. Using specially mounted iPads, chauffeurs can use this app to automatically plot out the best route to any destination and add any stops along the way before getting there, right there on the spot.

But wait, there's more! The iPad will also serve as a GPS for the vehicle and provide GPS tracking for dispatch. Access to the livery system and two-way text and voice communication between the chauffeur and both dispatch and the passenger are additional benefits. Furthermore, the Bluetooth integration through the iPad will mean that the passenger won't hear words or sounds coming in from dispatch. The ability to track flight and train times, as well as monitor road traffic, will ensure that all rides are done in the timeliest manner possible. The iPad will also function as an airport sign, a WiFi hotspot, the passenger's favorite newspaper or magazine, and so much more to create the perfect marriage of technology and transportation. Future enhancements will include remote vehicle maintenance tracking and notification, and many other exciting features that will enhance the riding experience.

As we say goodbye to the Town Car Sedan that has served thousands of executives across the country, the Lincoln MKT Town Car promises to be a significant improvement for both chauffeurs and passengers. The first production line has just rolled out so the new vehicles are now hitting the streets. Be on the lookout for the vehicle that is revolutionizing the whole executive chauffeured transportation industry.

Plea Bargaining: Nigerian Corruption Convicts as Psychological Cases

In this time when we are looking for creative ways to deal with the number of awaiting trials in the country, I think the issue has been how plea bargain has been used.

Has it been used to meet the ends of justice? How come it is only the high and mighty who are beneficiaries of plea-bargain?

I think public perception is that plea-bargain has been used not to meet the ends of justice but to protect the big men in our midst, who have committed crimes far more heinous than those awaiting trials in our prisons
.

~ Senator David Mark, President of the Senate of Nigeria.

Corruption Convicts as Psychological Cases Through The Use of Plea Bargaining

~ By John Egbeazien Oshodi, Ph.D.

As an expert in forensic psychology it is essential to quickly point out that in researching the current controversies surrounding plea bargaining in Nigeria the constitutionality of plea bargaining is yet to be established in our federal system of justice.

By every standard plea bargaining is odd to the Nigerian legal system as our system of jurisprudence is rooted in the English common law.
Like many things in Nigeria persons, agencies or institutions sometimes covertly make their own “laws” then run their offices with the belief that their creations like the plea bargaining concept is part of the law of the land.
Currently in Nigeria, as pointed out by the Senate President David Mark, plea bargaining should not be used to protect any bad wealthy men and women in Nigeria.
In the same vein, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Dahiru Musdapher condemns the unusual leniency that comes with plea-bargaining, an arrangement that is clearly outside the nation’s constitutional or legal system.
But this was not the case of the United States of America, where the system of plea bargaining was legally born 131 years ago and became established constitutionally in 1970 in the Brady v. United States.
In a society with highly functional judiciary, adequate judicial record keeping, efficient policing, and non-corrupt judges plea bargaining becomes very vital. In America, plea bargaining forms about 90% of all criminal convictions and the agreed plea bargaining arrangements cannot be altered once they receive approval from the courts.
In America, plea bargaining as an arrangement in criminal courts helps a person admits to being guilty of a lesser crime in the hope of receiving less severe sentence for a more serious offence and help manage the court cases better.
The American legal system also makes extensive use of plea bargaining in the disposition of offenders deemed to be mentally ill in regards to temporary insanity postures.
A plea bargaining practice that could pass into the cases of many high profile corruption offenders with unbelievable amount of billion naira scam.; an amount of money that that the individual can never fully consumed in his or her life time—a possible sign of psychological abnormality!
If the concept of plea bargaining is going to be continuously taking place in our courtrooms until it gains constitutional blessing, it should be used selectively as with offenders with bizarre financial behaviors. All federal and state courts should consider using plea bargaining in proceedings for involuntary committing corruption convicts into mental hospitals.
For the purpose of practice, and benefit for both the prosecutor and the defendant; let us use plea bargaining in certain matters like in the case of extraordinary corruption transgressions.
In the eyes of many Nigerians corruption convicts especially those involved in high profile cases appeared dangerous to self and/or dangerous to others therefore should be classified as gravely troubled as in the case of many million dollar or billion naira thieves.
In Nigeria, it should be used to serve the interest of the society by having the convicted big man/woman with stolen billions in the bank, and in the bedroom committed to what could be known as a forensic clinic as in a designated unit in our mental or psychiatric hospital in the prison or within the communities.
Plea bargain as a process could mutually satisfy many of these corruption convicts since going to a mental hospital is far better and of a lighter punishment than getting very long sentence or receiving possible death sentence which many Nigerians are now calling for.

On till the law makers in the National Assembly make plea bargaining part of the law of the land like the Criminal Justice System of Lagos State, let these corruption convicts get the benefit of psychological testing, behavioral therapy, moral modification, and social accountability through plea bargaining.

Nigerian Films in The Spotlight at New York African Film Festival

The New York première of Tunde Kelani's Maami is a must see.

Andy Amadi Okoroafor’s Relentless, Starring Hip-Hop and Soul Singer Nneka, Tunde Kelani’s Maami and Andrew Dosunmu’s Restless City are among the top Nigerian films in the spotlight as the popular New York African Film Festival returns to the Film Society of Lincoln Center from April 11 -17.

The details of the complete highlights are in the following press release.

AFRICAN FILM IS IN THE SPOTLIGHT AS THE NEW YORK AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS TO FILM SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER APRIL 11 To 17

Highlights Include Opening Night Film Mama Africa, Celebrating the Legacy of Miriam Makeba, The Education of Auma Obama, Offering a Window into the African Family and Father of President Obama, and Centerpiece Selection Relentless, Starring Hip-Hop and Soul Singer Nneka

NEW YORK (March 15, 2012)—Film Society of Lincoln Center (FSLC) and African Film Festival, Inc. (AFF) have again joined forces to present the 19th New York African Film Festival (NYAFF). Presented under the theme “21st Century: The Homecoming,” this year’s festival will explore the modern notion of home and homeland, from the legacy of music legend Miriam Makeba—subject of the Opening Night Film Mama Africa—to Diasporic visions like the New York-set Restless City. The NYAFF will also mark the 100th anniversary of the African National Congress (ANC) and the 50th anniversary of independence for Algeria, Burundi, Jamaica, Rwanda and Uganda, as well as give a unique look into the life of President Obama with the New York premiere of a film on his half-sister, The Education of Auma Obama. The NYAFF will run from April 11 through 17 at Film Society of Lincoln Center, and throughout April and May at The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space, Columbia University’s Institute of African Studies, Maysles Cinema Institute and the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s BAMcinématek.

“This is a continuation of the discussion about the shape of Africa that has taken place since Independence and that is now not being embraced by the younger generation,” said African Film Festival, Inc. Executive Director and Founder Mahen Bonetti. “Though these young people have not in many ways been thrown a lifeline as post-Independent conflict emerged, they have somehow managed, through technology, to craft their own narrative, unconsciously drawing on the past and creating something new and very modern without having disavowed the past.”

Special events and highlights include the Opening Night film Mama Africa by Mika Kaurismäki (Special Jury Recognition—Documentary at the 2012 Pan African Film Festival) on April 11, and the Centerpiece film Relentless by Andy Amadi Okoroafor, starring internationally renowned Nigerian-German hip hop and soul singer Nneka, a U.S. premiere, on Friday, April 13. With the election year in full swing, the NYAFF will present a film that offers a window into the African family of President Barack Obama and insight into his father, with The Education of Auma Obama by Branwen Okpako; the film won the Viewers’ Choice Award at the 2011 Africa International Film Festival and the Festival Founders’ Award at the 2012 Pan African Film Festival. The film noir How to Steal 2 Million by Charlie Vundla, a U.S. premiere, features the top South African actors Rapulana Seiphemo, Terry Pheto and John Kani.

“African cinema was born in the same year as the New York Film Festival—1963—and it's always been a source of great pleasure and pride for me that for 50 years our programs have provided a vital showcase for the best in African filmmaking,” said Film Society of Lincoln Center Program Director Richard Peña. “We also salute our dear friends and partners at the New York African Film Festival, which for almost twenty years has worked successfully to make African cinema a reality around the United States.”

The popular blog Africa is a Country (africasacountry.com) will present “Africa is a Country: Talking Media and Russian Archives,” a free panel discussion, on Saturday, April 14 from 1:30 pm to 4 pm in the Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery at the Walter Reade Theater. Featured bloggers and special guest will examine the relationship between Africa and the Soviet Union in the 1960s and 1970s, as is evidenced by Russia's extensive film archive of the continent, and then explore the relationship between film and social media movements on the continent (e.x. Tahrir revolutionary cinema, which documented the Egyptian Revolution in Tahrir Square, and Kony 2012).

“Africans in the Diaspora: Expatriates and the Homecoming,” a free festival preview will take place at The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space on April 5 at 6:00 pm to welcome audiences to the 19th edition of the NYAFF; the event, moderated by renowned journalist Femi Oke, will include a special performance by popular artist-emcee DJ Spooky in which he rescores Father of African Cinema Ousmane Sembene’s Borrom Sorret, filmmaker-scholar Yemane Demissie and music and African cinema critic Beatiz Leal. The festival then kicks off at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater at 165 W. 65th Street, Plaza Level, from April 11 through 17, then heads to Columbia University’s Institute of African Studies on Thursday, April 19 for a daylong, free public program exploring the themes of the festival. It picks up on May 4 and 5 at the Maysles Cinema Institute in Harlem and culminates over Memorial Day Weekend at the Brooklyn Academy of Music BAMcinématek—part of the dance and music festival DanceAfrica. OPENING NIGHT SELECTION

Co-presented by Okayafrica

Mama Africa. Mika Kaurismäki, 2011, Finland/South Africa/Germany, HDCAM; 90m
Miriam Makeba was the first African musician to win international stardom, one whose music was always anchored in her traditional South African roots, as was her ceaseless message against racism and poverty. Miriam was forced into a life in exile, after exposing the harsh realities of apartheid. Singing for John F. Kennedy and Marlon Brando, performing with Harry Belafonte, Nina Simone and Dizzie Gillespie, being married to Hugh Masekela and then Stokely Carmichael, her life was a tumultuous one. Miriam stood for truth and justice on behalf of oppressed people, most importantly for Africans. She tragically died after collapsing at a concert in November 2008 in Italy at the age of 76. This documentary traces her life and music through more than fifty years of performing. Apr 11, *7:15p; Apr 13, 1:30p

CENTERPIECE SELECTION
U.S. Premiere

Relentless. Andy Amadi Okoroafor, 2011, Nigeria/France/ Spain/Germany, 35mm; 92m
Obi is a peace-keeping soldier in worn torn Sierra Leone, where he meets Blessing a Sierra Leonean woman. His life is devastated when he finds Blessing mutilated by rebels. His only option is to end her misery. On his return to Lagos, Obi is a man battling with the scars of war. By day he runs a small security company with Ola, his best friend and fellow war veteran; at night he walks the lonely streets of Lagos. A haunting story about loneliness, love and self-discovery set in Africa’s throbbing megacity Lagos, Relentless delicately explores the effects of war and loss. Plus a live dance performance by Khaleah London. Apr 13, *8:00p

U.S. Premiere

Black Africa White Marble. Clemente Bicocchi, 2011, USA/Republic of Congo/Italy; 77m
In the 1880s, there were two paths for Central Africa: Pietro di Brazza’s and Henry
Stanley’s. Italian by birth and French by education, Brazza rejected the racism of his age, using his philosophy of non-violence to penetrate the rainforests of the Congo Basin, sowing trust along the way. Meanwhile, his rival Stanley (in the service of the Belgian King Leopold II) advanced with the roar of the canon. More than a century later, when the current Congo president decides to transfer di Brazza’s remains from his grave in Algiers to a multimillion-dollar mausoleum in Congo’s impoverished capital, writer Idanna Pucci discovers an insidious hidden agenda behind the plan—one that sheds harsh light on both Central Africa’s colonial past and its corrupt present. Told using an innovative mixture of animation, puppetry and original documentary footage, Black Africa White Marble is a gripping, real-life David-and-Goliath thriller. Apr 14, *5:00p; Apr 16, 4:00p

Co-presented by Margaret Mead Film Festival
The Creators. Laura Gamse, 2011, South Africa; 83m
The story begins in the mind of Cashril Plus, a twelve-year-old animator and son of graffiti artist Faith47. Through Cashril's eyes, we see his mother paint the streets and forgotten townships haloing Cape Town. The Creators then weaves us through the lives of Faith47 and fellow artists Warongx (afro-blues), Emile (hip hop), Sweat.X (glam rap), Blaq Pearl (spoken word) and Mthetho (opera). Born in separate areas of a formerly-segregated South Africa, these artists recraft history--and the impacts of apartheid--in their own artistic languages. Director Laura Gamse’s camera reveals the impulse behind the artists’ social consciousness, their individual eccentricities, and each creator’s unique form of expression. Diving into the current of subversive art which fuels South Africa’s many clashing and merging cultures, The Creators brings into focus the invisible connections among strangers' disparate lives--and the creative expression used to traverse the divide. The result is an intimate, refreshing and deeply revealing portrait of those remolding the legacy of apartheid.

The Education of Auma Obama is a captivating and intimate portrait of U.S. president Barack Obama’s older half-sister, who embodies a post-colonial, feminist identity in her native Kenya. Nigerian-born director Branwen Okpako’s film also documents a generation of politically and socially engaged Africans whose aspirations are informed by their parent’s experiences, and whose ambition to forge a better future for their communities starts from the ground up. Apr 12, *6:00p; Apr 16, 2:00p

Elza. Mariette Monpierre, 2011, Guadeloupe/USA; 80m

But Elza breaks her mother's heart by running away to their native Guadeloupe in search of a distant childhood memory: the father she barely remembers. Apr 12, 4:00p; Apr 15 *6:15p

Co-presented by Cinema Tropical

Fire In Babylon. Stevan Riley, 2010, UK, Digital; 80m
In a turbulent era of apartheid in South Africa, race riots in England and civil unrest in the Caribbean, the West Indian cricketers, led by the enigmatic Viv Richards, struck a defiant blow at the forces of white prejudice worldwide. Fire in Babylon is the breathtaking story of how the West Indies triumphed over its colonial masters through the achievements of one of the most gifted teams in sporting history. Their undisputed skill, combined with a fearless spirit, allowed them to dominate the genteel game at the highest level, replaying it on their own terms. This remarkable documentary is their story, told in their own words. Apr 15, 8:30p

U.S. Premiere

In Darkest Hollywood: Cinema & Apartheid. Peter Davis and Daniel Riesenfeld, 1994, USA/South Africa/Canada; 112m.

Using a wealth of archival footage and commentary by filmmakers and actors, including a young John Kani and Miriam Makeba, this two-part film examines the role of cinema in both supporting and attacking Apartheid, focusing on the impact of Hollywood films in South Africa, the depiction of South Africa in Hollywood films, and finally, the emergence of an indigenous film industry in South Africa. It also questions Hollywood’s commitment to racial stereotypes and reluctance to depict black heroes.
