World Muslim Leader Speaks of Islamophobia in the UK at Opening of New Mosque

Muslim Leader Speaks of Islamophobia at Opening of New Mosque
LONDON, February 14, 2012/PRNewswire/ --
Muslims urged to cast aside differences of religion, ethnicity and nationality for the sake of peace and unity
A clarion call to Muslims to set aside differences and work relentlessly for peace and unity in the UK has been made on the occasion of the opening of a new mosque in South East London.
To mark the opening, and as part of its ongoing commitment to serving mankind, the Ahmadiyya Muslim community donated thousands of pounds to British charities.
Representatives of all major religions had gathered for the inaugural ceremony of the new GBP675,000 mosque in Catford, which had been funded entirely from voluntary donations from the Ahmadiyya Muslim community - many of whom had donated jewellery, savings and indeed pocket money for this noble purpose.
The worldwide Head of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, the fifth Caliph of the community, opened the new Tahir Mosque and led its inaugural prayers.
At the opening ceremony, also attended by Heidi Alexander, MP for Lewisham East and Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, cheques totalling GBP5000 were presented to the MP's charity, Youth AID Lewisham, and to the Mayor's charity the Lavender Trust. This adds to the hundreds of thousands of pounds donated to British charities by the community each year.
The purpose of a mosque to serve as a beacon for peace was highlighted at the event by His Holiness Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, who said:
"It is essential that a Muslim should never usurp the rights of others and instead he should cast aside all differences of religion, nationality or ethnicity and seek to become the means of support and love for all others. If someone comes to a Muslim for help, then it is the duty of the Muslim to try and fulfil that need."
Addressing the issue of Islamophobia, the Caliph spoke of the fear some people held of mosques and of Islam itself. But he said it was the acts of a small number of extremists who were destroying the peace and security of society at large. These were enemies of all of mankind - and were not at all in keeping with the real teachings of Islam. He added:
"Peace in society is a two-way process and can only be established if all parties work together towards mutual reconciliation.
"We must set aside our own personal desires and instead be concerned for the future existence and well-being of our next generations. We must adopt selflessness rather than selfishness. When we all join together and come to respect each other's feelings and sentiments then and only then will an atmosphere of mutual love develop. It is then that we will truly see the beautiful society that all peaceful people desire."
The National President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK, Rafiq Hayat, said:
"Love for All, Hatred for None defines the ethos of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and it underpins our mission in every mosque. These are abodes of peace where we worship God and give thanks for His blessings.
"The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community built the first mosque in London in Putney in 1924 and at the turn off this century, we opened western Europe's biggest mosque, again in London. The new mosque in Catford will share the vision that is common to all our mosques and that is an ongoing commitment to build bridges between communities and to strive for peace.
"That is why we are running a national peace campaign from our mosques across the UK, raising funds for local charities, holding blood donation drives and holding interfaith events. This is true Islam in practice"
The mosque will serve some 300 worshippers and features prayer halls for men and women.

Ronald Reagan is the Best American President Since World War 2
The charismatic Ronald Wilson Reagan( February 6, 1911 – June 5, 2004), the 40th President of the United States has been rated as the best American President since World War Two and the second best in history after Abraham Lincoln and followed by George Washington according to the Harris Poll released today ahead of this year's Presidents' Day on February 21, 2012.
Guess who is rated the worst President?
George W. Bush!
The following is the complete report of the poll.
NEW YORK, Feb. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- As the nation prepares to celebrate Presidents' Day, it is always interesting to see what people think about some of the past presidents. Looking at all the presidents since World War II, one-quarter of Americans (25%) say Ronald Reagan is the best president, one in five (19%) say Franklin Roosevelt while 15% say it is John Kennedy and 12% say Bill Clinton. The nine other presidents, including Barack Obama, are at 4% or less.
Looking at the flip side, just over one-quarter of U.S. adults (27%) say that George W. Bush was the worst president while just under one-quarter (22%) say Barack Obama is the worst; one in ten (12%) say the worst was Richard Nixon. The ten other presidents are at 5% or less.
These are some of the results of The Harris Poll of 2,016 adults surveyed online between January 16 and 23, 2012 by Harris Interactive.
Partisan differences
Presidents are elected bearing a party label, so it's not surprising that partisans have different opinions about who the best and worst presidents are. For Republicans, over half (55%) say Ronald Reagan was the best president and almost half (47%) say Barack Obama is the worst president. Among Democrats, there are three presidents bunched near the top for best – Franklin Roosevelt (25%), Bill Clinton (22%) and John Kennedy (18%). It's an easier choice for worst president for Democrats as almost half (48%) say George W. Bush was the worst.
For Independents, there isn't a clear answer for either category. One-quarter of Independents (24%) say Franklin Roosevelt was the best, one in five (21%) say Ronald Reagan was the best and 17% say the best was John Kennedy. Looking at the other side, one-quarter (24%) say George W. Bush was the worst president while one in five Independents (19%) say Barack Obama is the worst.
Best presidents in history
If the list of presidents is expanded to include some of the founding fathers, such as Washington, Jefferson and Adams, as well as other presidents including Lincoln, Wilson and Jackson, the results of who is best change slightly. If we look at a combined best or second best, one-third of Americans (32%) say Abraham Lincoln was the best president, one-quarter (26%) say Ronald Reagan was the best and one in five say George Washington (21%), John Kennedy (21%) and Bill Clinton (19%) were the best presidents.
So What?
History has shown us that a president is best judged years after he has left office. Decisions made while sitting in the Oval Office may be seen as the wrong decision by many Americans at that point in time, but as time passes, the wisdom of some of these hard choices becomes clear. And, the reverse is also true.

CIDA launches the Canada Fund for African Climate Resilience
14 Feb 2012 11:21 Africa/Lagos
Call for Proposals: Canada Fund for African Climate Resilience
- Objective of the Canada Fund for African Climate Resilience
- Review process
- Eligibility
- Application process
- Key documents
- Deadline
- Proposal assessment
Objective of the Canada Fund for African Climate Resilience
The objective of the Canada Fund for African Climate Resilience (Canada Fund) is to support projects that will substantially improve and increase food security and/or economic growth within an African country by reducing the impacts of climate change through protection of investments and/or adaptation measures.
Review process
CIDA's Partnerships with Canadians Branch (PWCB) is launching a specialized call for proposals under a $20-million fund to support and rapidly address climate change effects and adaptation needs that are restricting or having negative impact on improving food security and/or economic growth in Africa.
This call will capitalize on Canadian expertise in addressing climate change effects and adaptation needs, as well as delivering sustainable, effective development projects in eligible developing countries in Africa. Proposals are to target achieving the objectives of the call. Proposals should also consider the opportunity to capture innovation to address critical climate change issues that require specialized expertise and technologies and integrated approaches. The proposals must be substantive in scope, self-sustaining once in operation, and achieve demonstrable results and outcomes.
A panel that will include experts in the fields of development, climate change, agriculture, and economic development will review all eligible proposals. The panel will make recommendations to the Minister for International Cooperation for final approval.
Funding will be provided in the form of a grant or a contribution and will be based on a cost-share basis, up to 85 percent CIDA and 15 percent the partner, calculated on project costs. The partner's 15 percent cost-share contribution is a baseline; a higher contribution by the partner will be factored in the proposal assessment. The level of investment (cash versus in-kind contribution) will also be considered when assessing proposals for sustainability. Only substantive projects with a minimum budget of $2 million will be considered; all projects will be subject to an evaluation against results and outputs proposed.
Eligible private sector or civil society applicants, or their coalitions, may submit up to two proposals. Each proposal will be for a project implemented in only one country among the following eligible countries in Africa:
- CIDA countries of focus: Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Mozambique, Senegal, Tanzania
- Other eligible countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Zambia
The deadline for submission is noon (12:00), Pacific Standard Time, April 19, 2012.
Applicants may refer to the document Examples of country-level climate-resilient development activities that could be supported under the Canada Fund.
Eligibility
In addition to the regular eligibility requirements, in order to receive support under the Canada Fund, a project must:- Be completed by March 31, 2014 (approximately 18 months for implementation)
- Be implemented in one of the 14 eligible African countries
- Align with one or more of the priority programming areas in Canada's policy framework on public climate finance, namely,
-
- Adaptation by the poorest and most vulnerable
- Clean energy
- Forests and agriculture
- Advance programming that builds upon existing programming and/or scales up the demonstrated capacity, expertise, technology, and value-added of the Canadian private sector and/or civil society in vulnerable and under-served communities by working in partnership with developing country partners
Given the short timeframe for project implementation, proposals that require an environmental assessment will not be recommended. Please read Section 8.2.2 of the application guidelines carefully to determine whether your proposal triggers the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. If it does, it is expected that you either already have had an environmental assessment done by a competent authority for the proposed physical works or that you plan to have one done, at your organization's expense, and accepted by CIDA's environmental specialist before signing an agreement with CIDA.
Canadian organizations or coalitions may submit proposals on the following basis:- The lead applicant and its supporting members must be incorporated in Canada
- The regularly appointed board of directors, board of governors or any other governance structure of the lead applicant must have a majority of Canadian members
The lead applicant, or, if a Canadian coalition, at least one of the supporting members, must be able to demonstrate that it has five years of recent experience in Africa working with CIDA, another department of the Government of Canada, or any other bilateral aid agency or multilateral development institution.
Application process
- Please review the Canada Fund application form, application guidelines, and related documents thoroughly.
- Create or update the lead applicant's profile through Partners@CIDA.
- Confirm the lead applicant's eligibility for this call by performing an eligibility self-assessment.
- Upload the mandatory documents as listed in thesupporting documentation checklist together with the application form to your profile on Partners@CIDA. Supporting documentation that is not available in an electronic format should be scanned and uploaded to Partners@CIDA. PWCB will not accept application forms or supporting documentation sent by mail or by fax. Only complete application packages (that is, packages comprising a complete application form and all the required supporting documentation, signed by a duly authorized representative of the lead applicant or the Canadian partnership group, where indicated) will be considered.
- Submit your application before the deadline.

You will be sent an automatic email to confirm that your application has been received. If you do not receive the email, then consider the application "not received".
Proposal assessment
CIDA will assess all proposals submitted with all mandatory documents against the following five partnership principles:- Sound governance
- Support of Canadians
- Relevance to CIDA's mandate and coherence with Canadian government policy
- Results
- Development effectiveness
These partnership principles are defined further in the application guidelines.
To ensure transparency and fairness to all applicants, CIDA will not discuss proposal submissions until all applicants have been notified of decisions regarding their proposals. The application guidelines and the Frequently Asked Questions section of the CIDA-PWCB website represent the only official interpretation of the application process.
Applicants that do not meet the eligibility criteria as outlined in the section on eligibility will be notified in writing as soon as possible. All other applicants will be notified in writing of the call results in due course.

Whitney Houston’s Death and Bathtub Accidents
Whitney Houston in one of her concerts.
It was reported that the famous American singer Whitney Houston was found dead in a bathtub on Saturday night of February 11, 2012, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. The coroner’s report did not show any foul play and that made me to conclude that a bathtub accident could have caused her death whether she was on drugs and drunk or not.

The bathroom is one of the most hazardous places in the home for accidents; as a matter of fact the majority of broken hips are the result of slipping in the bathtub. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that there are more than 300,000 bathroom accidents each year and that 2.5 million adults over the age of 65 need special assistance in bathing.

This special television event, what is arguably Houston's most revealing and compelling interview of her career, will be rebroadcast as Winfrey reflects on her personal memories of the iconic superstar and shares with fans the magic of a musical icon who has gone too soon.
In September 2009 for the "The Oprah Winfrey Show" season 24 premiere, Winfrey sat down with Houston for a special one-on-one interview. After nearly seven years since the world heard the music icon's voice, Houston gave an intimate and poignant performance of "I Didn't Know My Own Strength." She shared only with Winfrey the private struggles she tried to hide from public view and discussed openly about her marriage to R&B star Bobby Brown, her struggles with drug abuse and why she retreated from the spotlight. Opening up to Winfrey like never before, Houston also spoke candidly of the day she left her husband, her sorrow over the death of Michael Jackson and her hopes for her future.

This brings Adele's career Grammy total to 8. Viewers who tuned into the live ceremony, which took place from the Staples Center in Los Angeles earlier this evening, witnessed Adele deliver a breathtaking rendition of "Rolling in the Deep," her first public performance since she underwent vocal surgery in November. Adele took home honors in the following categories:
Record of the Year ("Rolling in the Deep")

Adele's sophomore album 21 was the biggest selling album of 2011 with over 18 million units sold worldwide. Entertainment Weekly declared it "that rarest pop commodity: timeless," and the Associated Press affirmed that Adele "created more than just an album with good songs: she's crafted a masterpiece." In addition to being named Billboard's "Artist of the Year," Adele had the best-selling US single of the year, "Rolling in the Deep," certified 6x Platinum, as well as the best-selling music DVD of the year, "Live at The Royal Albert Hall," certified 7x Platinum. She has broken countless records – including becoming the first-ever artist to lead the Billboard 200 while concurrently having 3 Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles from the same parent album ("Rolling in the Deep," "Someone Like You," and "Set Fire to the Rain"). 21 has spent 19 nonconsecutive weeks, to date, at #1 on the Billboard Top 100, surpassing records held by Billy Ray Cyrus' "Some Gave All" and 1998's "Titanic" soundtrack.
