'Visionaries Awards' Mark 75 Years of Support for Courageous Leaders Worldwide

From Technology to Human Rights to Microfinance, Awardees Receive $100,000 to Advance Their Work

NEW YORK, May 4, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In recognition of its 75th anniversary, the Ford Foundation today announced $100,000 awards to 12 social innovators who, through their extraordinary vision and courageous work, are improving the lives of millions of people.

In a period of uncertain transformation in global society, politics and the economy, the Ford Foundation Visionaries Awards seek to raise the profile of leaders whose innovative efforts on the frontlines of key social issues offer pathways to improved economic opportunities and expanded political and social participation for millions of marginalized people worldwide.

"We can't think of a more fitting way to mark our anniversary than to spotlight the people who continually infuse new energy and ideas into the effort to solve our most pressing social problems," said Luis Ubinas, president of the Ford Foundation. "They are thinkers and doers-people who pursue their vision with determination and a laser focus on impact."

The 12 visionaries represent the thousands of brilliant people and organizations the foundation has supported since its founding in 1936. They come from diverse backgrounds and work in a variety of fields-from human rights to technology to education, both in the United States and around the world.

"Through these awards, we want to highlight the unheralded work of thousands of courageous leaders whose lives are devoted to improving systems and institutions so that all people have a voice in the decisions that affect their lives," Ubinas said. "These 12 individuals represent the courage, commitment, and innovative thinking of all the remarkable people who work on the frontlines of social change."

The foundation is using its 75th anniversary to explore the next generation of important issues facing America and the world, as well as highlighting the people and ideas making a difference today.

The awards will help these leaders share their work with a broad range of new audiences, allowing them to promote their ideas and ensure that their insights inform and advance the work of other social innovators.

From an indigenous women's rights leader in Peru to a political cartoonist in Kenya, the visionaries were selected for their pioneering work, exceptional leadership and the potential scale and impact of their visions.

The recipients of the Ford Found a tion Visionaries Awards are:

Enabling Community Ownership over Natural Resources
Alfredo Wagner Berno de Almeida
Coordinator, New Social Cartography Project of the Amazon
Manaus, Brazil

For centuries, traditional peoples have inhabited the forests of the Brazilian Amazon, preserving the forest through their wise stewardship. Despite this history, they have been denied their rights to their lands and livelihoods. In the 1980s, anthropologist Alfredo Wagner Berno de Almeida launched the region's first mapping project challenging official maps by making visible for the first time the claims of traditional communities over the millions of acres of their Amazonian homelands. Wagner's groundbreaking initiative became the model for the New Social Cartography Project of the Amazon, enabling communities to make use of the latest technologies to bolster their rights over their own territories and resources.

"The opposite of poverty is not wealth-it's justice," he says. Through the Equal Justice Initiative, he advocates on behalf of juvenile offenders, poor people denied effective representation or wrongly convicted or charged, and others whose experiences with the criminal justice system have been marked by bias or misconduct. Driven by the belief that society's treatment of the disadvantaged is the real test of its commitment to social justice, Stevenson teaches law and has written extensively on criminal justice, capital punishment and civil rights issues.

Bringing African Culture to New Audiences
Elsie McCabe Thompson
President, Museum for African Art
New York, New York

The Museum for African Art is one of only two major American museums devoted solely to African art, and it was Elsie McCabe Thompson's singular determination that made possible the opening of a high-profile showplace for the museum's collection. The lawyer and former city government executive was relentless in her quest to enrich the lives of all through a deeper engagement with African culture and art. After more than a decade of fundraising and planning, Thompson succeeded in establishing the $95 million institution on upper Fifth Avenue near Harlem, where New York City's cultural institutions and African, African American, Caribbean and Latino communities meet.

Creating Financial Opportunities for the Poor
Martin Eakes
Co-Founder and CEO, Self-Help
CEO, Center for Responsible Lending
Durham, North Carolina

Martin Eakes is a national leader in the fight against abusive financial practices-predatory home loans, payday lending, and exorbitant checking and credit card fees-that target poor people and trap them in cycles of poverty. Self-Help, the groundbreaking community development lending institution that he founded in 1980, reaches low-income families underserved by conventional financial institutions. Over the years, Self-Help has provided almost $6 billion in financing to more than 60,000 homebuyers, small businesses and nonprofits, and serves more than 25,000 mostly low-income families through seven retail credit unions. Standing in direct contrast to the predatory financial products that played a central role in the financial crisis, Self-Help's work demonstrates the importance of responsible and affordable financial products in helping low-income people achieve economic security.

Sahara Reporters and three other NGOs share $5M Grants

Sahara Reporters and three other NGOs share $5M Grants

The daring citizen news website Sahara Reporters of Nigeria is among the four media organizations chosen to receive the first Omidyar Network grants in support of Investigative and Citizen Journalism in the Developing World.

Stephen King, investment partner and Omidyar Network's global practice head for Government Transparency, made the announcement yesterday at the World Press Freedom Day conference in Washington D.C.

According to a press release, particular emphasis of the Omidyar Network Government Transparency initiative is to focus on organizations that seek a free, open and vibrant media as well as investigative and citizen journalism organizations that provide citizens access to credible information that increases citizen engagement and participation in civil affairs.

King also announced the first organizations to receive support through the expanded initiative. Nearly $5M in grants and a program related investment will go to four non-profits: African Media Initiative, up to $1.7M over two years; the Sahara Reporters project, up to $450k over three years; Media Development Loan Fund, $2M; and Committee to Protect Journalists, $800k.

Through its Government Transparency initiative, Omidyar Network invests in nonprofit and for-profit organizations that use technology and media platforms to provide access to information and tools necessary for citizens to participate in the governing process and hold governments to account. Today's announcement underscores Omidyar Network's recognition of the crucial role journalism plays in achieving those ends.

"Omidyar Network believes a healthy government – one that is responsive to its citizens -- requires a healthy, robust fourth estate. By focusing additional efforts on fostering investigative and citizen journalism, we believe we will be catalyzing transparency efforts that will positively affect millions of people," said King. "True to the tenets of our Government Transparency initiative, we'll pay particular attention to innovative organizations utilizing technology platforms to scale their impact with a recognition that effective technologies will vary by country and region. In some geographies, the technology will take the form of an online platform, mobile in others, and broadcast in yet others."

The African Media Initiative is a non-profit, pan-Africa program that seeks to strengthen the continent's media sector though advocacy, investments, technology and training. The initiative is led by private media owners operating in Africa who believe a strong media is required for social development, economic growth and empowered citizens. For more information, please visit: http://www.africanmediainitiative.org

Sahara Reporters is a citizen media website that encourages citizen journalists to publish evidence of ongoing corruption, abuses of human rights and government malfeasance in Nigeria. It is one of the principal sources of independent investigative journalism and breaking news on Nigeria's government. For more information about Sahara Reporters, please visit: http://www.saharareporters.com.

Media Development Loan Fund is a mission-driven investment fund for independent news outlets in countries with a history of media oppression. Working in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Southeast Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States, the fund provides low-cost capital and technical know-how to help journalists in challenging environments build sustainable businesses around professional, responsible, quality journalism. For more information, please visit: http://www.mdlf.org.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) is an independent, nonprofit organization that promotes press freedom worldwide by defending the rights of journalists to report the news without fear of reprisal. By publicly revealing abuses against the press and by acting on behalf of imprisoned and threatened journalists, CPJ effectively warns journalists and news organizations where attacks on press freedom are occurring. CPJ publishes articles and news releases; special reports; and Attacks on the Press, the most comprehensive annual survey of press freedom around the world. New weather warning tool helps individuals prepare for the dangerous storm season upon us with early, location-based text and voice alerts right on their mobile device

PR Newswire

NORMAN, Okla., May 3, 2011

NORMAN, Okla., May 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Weather Decision Technologies, Inc., a global leader in providing state-of-the-science weather detection, alerting, and forecasting systems, today announced the availability of the iMapWeather Radio App for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. This groundbreaking warning system provides information on life-threatening weather – from tornadoes to floods to hurricanes – on a mobile device, going beyond traditional weather radio broadcasting services with advanced features, such as the ability to "wake up" when danger approaches, instant voice and text alerts and real-time video.

"Think of the iMapWeather Radio app as a highly advanced weather radio right on your mobile device - a key tool to being prepared for dangerous weather," said Mike Eilts, President and CEO of WDT. "With iMapWeather Radio, users receive precise location-based alerts of severe weather coming their way, acting as an early warning to help individuals and families seek safety. And, because the app is available on 3G capable devices like the iPhone and iPad, users still receive vital information when the power goes out and TV and radios can't be turned on."

iMapWeather Radio

The iMapWeather Radio app offers the following key safety features:

* Precise Alerts: iMapWeather Radio provides more precise alerts than those offered by the existing services, sending alerts only if the device or saved locations fall inside a watch/warning polygon.
* Follow Me: When on the go, users automatically receive an alert if they move into an area under a watch/warning.
* Friends and Family: With iMapWeather Radio, users can pinpoint up to five locations for the app to follow. This allows the user to ensure that their friends and family, whether at school, out of state, at a ballgame, etc., are safe as well.
* Battery Life: The application is designed to conserve your battery life even while using GPS.
* Audio: iMapWeather Radio provides audio alerts in the form of beeps followed by a brief description of the alert type – 24 hours a day.
* Video: In markets where local media partners participate, users can get streaming video of severe weather coverage.

Pricing and Availability

The iMapWeather Radio app is available for $9.99 from the App Store on all iPhones, iPads and the iPod Touch . It will also be available at the Android app store for Android devices later this year.

Here are highlights from Friday's Analyst Blog:

Chevron Profits Soar Past Estimates

U.S.energy giant Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) reported a jump in its first-quarter 2011 profits, benefiting from higher oil prices and stronger refining margins.

Earnings per share (excluding adjustments for foreign-currency effects) came in at $3.17, above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.99 and the year-ago adjusted profit of $2.37.

Following ExxonMobil Corp. (NYSE: XOM) and Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE: RDS.A), Chevron stepped up as the third member of 'Big Oil' to post solid results. The other two constituents of the exclusive group – ConocoPhillips (NYSE: COP) and BP plc NYSE: (BP) – have reported disappointing quarterly profits.

Quarterly revenue rose 25.2% year-over-year (from $48,179.0 million to $60,341.0 million) and was 10.9% above our projection.

Segmental Performance

Upstream: Chevron's total production of crude oil and natural gas decreased marginally (by 0.8%) from the year-earlier level to 2,760 thousand oil-equivalent barrels per day (MBOE/d), as volume gains in Brazil, Nigeria, Thailand and Canada were more than offset by normal field declines, the effect of higher prices on cost-recovery volumes and other contractual provisions, as well as downtime associated with weather and maintenance issues.

U.S. output dipped 5.5% year-over-year though Chevron's international operations (accounting for 75% of the total) experienced a modest 0.8% rise in volumes. Gains on the overseas production front were supported by higher realized liquids prices, resulting in a 26.5% year-over-year rise in upstream earnings to $5,977.0 million.

Despite the slight dip in Chevron's quarterly volumes, we believe its production outlook remains one of the most robust in its peer group, with a number of major deepwater projects scheduled to come online during the next few years. Major start-ups during the last few months include the Tahiti and Perdido in the Gulf of Mexico, Frade offshore Brazil and Tombua-Landana in Angola.

Chevron continues to progress its major capital projects that include deepwater developments in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) and multiple liquefied natural gas (LNG) mega-projects in Angola and Australia. Importantly, during the quarter, Chevron got the green light for conducting the first 'completely new exploration' in the GoM. (i.e. tapping a reservoir from which oil or gas has never been produced) since BP's oil rig disaster in April last year.

Downstream: Chevron's downstream segment's earnings soared to $622 million during the quarter, as against just $196 million in the previous-year period. The improvement can be attributed to improved refined products margins and higher earnings from chemical operations (primarily from the 50%-owned Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LLC), partially negated by lower refined product sales.

Capital Expenditure, Balance Sheet & Share Repurchases

The second-largest U.S. oil company by market value after ExxonMobil spent $5,046.0 million in capital expenditures during the quarter. Approximately 92% of the total outlays pertained to upstream projects. As of March 31, 2011, the company had $13,149.0 million in cash and total debt of $11,575 million, with a debt-to-total capitalization ratio of about 9.5%. As part of the stock repurchase program announced in 2010, Chevron repurchased $750 million worth of shares in the March quarter.

Dividend Hiked

Recently, the San Ramon, California-based company announced an 8.3% increase in its quarterly dividend to 78 cents per share, or $3.12 per share annualized. The dividend is payable on June 10 to shareholders of record on May 19, 2011.

Our Recommendation

Chevron is one of the largest integrated energy companies in the world and has an impressive business model. Its current oil and gas development project pipeline is among the best in the industry, boasting large, multiyear projects. Additionally, Chevron possesses one of the healthiest balance sheets among peers, which helps it to capitalize on investment opportunities with the option to make strategic acquisitions.

However, due to its integrated nature, Chevron is particularly susceptible to the downside risk from continued weakness in the global economy. We are also concerned by the company's high level of capital spending, which may result in reduced returns going forward. As such, we see the stock performing in line with the broader market and maintain our long-term Neutral recommendation, supported by a Zacks #3 Rank (short-term Hold rating).
