Can Amiodarone, Dronedarone and Verapamil Stop the Ebola Virus?

The clinically approved drugs amiodarone, dronedarone and verapamil inhibit filovirus cell entry.

OBJECTIVES:
Filoviruses such as Ebola virus and Marburg virus cause a severe haemorrhagic fever syndrome in humans for which there is no specific treatment. Since filoviruses use a complex route of cell entry that depends on numerous cellular factors, we hypothesized that there may be drugs already approved for human use for other indications that interfere with signal transduction or other cellular processes required for their entry and hence have anti-filoviral properties.

METHODS:
We used authentic filoviruses and lentiviral particles pseudotyped with filoviral glycoproteins to identify and characterize such compounds.

RESULTS:
We discovered that amiodarone, a multi-ion channel inhibitor and adrenoceptor antagonist, is a potent inhibitor of filovirus cell entry at concentrations that are routinely reached in human serum during anti-arrhythmic therapy. A similar effect was observed with the amiodarone-related agent dronedarone and the L-type calcium channel blocker verapamil. Inhibition by amiodarone was concentration dependent and similarly affected pseudoviruses as well as authentic filoviruses. Inhibition of filovirus entry was observed with most but not all cell types tested and was accentuated by the pre-treatment of cells, indicating a host cell-directed mechanism of action. The New World arenavirus Guanarito was also inhibited by amiodarone while the Old World arenavirus Lassa and members of the Rhabdoviridae (vesicular stomatitis virus) and Bunyaviridae (Hantaan) families were largely resistant.

CONCLUSIONS:
The ion channel blockers amiodarone, dronedarone and verapamil inhibit filoviral cell entry.

TURN – Fund for Artistic Cooperation between Germany and African Countries

In 2012, the Federal Cultural Foundation established the TURN – Fund for Artistic Cooperation between Germany and African Countries in order to encourage a wide range of German institutions to shift their focus on the artistic production and cultural debates in African countries.

German cultural organisations in all artistic areas are called upon to engage in new forms of artistic collaboration with African partners. The programme offers incentives primarily to German institutions and artists (museums, theatres, dance companies, art associations, composers, writers, publishers, etc.) to enhance their profile with new themes, working methods and perspectives.

Between 2012 and 2018, the TURN Fund shall provide funding to artistic projects which represent an innovative contribution toward enhancing Germany's view of contemporary artistic production in Africa, possess high artistic quality and have a public impact in Germany. Each project must request at least 50,000 euros in funding; the applying institution is required to contribute 20 percent of the total cost with capital resources of its own. Applicants from African countries are required to apply together with an institutional partner in Germany.

In the first round of applications, the Foundation awarded one-time funding to project-preparatory research projects. Descriptions of these research endeavours are provided below. Funding applications for research projects are no longer being accepted.

In order to encourage thematic and artistic exchange between the partners, the Federal Cultural Foundation will organize a series of meetings for directors, curators, choreographers, writers, publishers, musicians, designers and filmmakers from the funded projects along with other experts in Germany and the participating African countries.

Funding is awarded by the Executive Board of the Federal Cultural Foundation on the basis of recommendations provided by an independent jury of experts. The following individuals have been appointed to the jury of the TURN Fund:

Sandro Lunin, Zurich: Having worked many years in theatre, e.g. at the Theater am Neumarkt and as co-director of the Schlachthaus Theater in Berne, Lunin was appointed artistic director of the Zurich Theatre Spectacle in 2008, an international festival featuring numerous co-productions and guest performances. Sandro Lunin possesses profound knowledge of the European theatre scene, as well as theatre and dance production in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East.

Elke aus dem Moore, Stuttgart: Head of the Visual Arts Department at the ifa - Institute for international cultural relations since 2008. She is responsible for international exhibitions and funding programs. Prior to her current position, she was Artistic Director of the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart and Curator at the Shedhalle in Zurich. Elke aus dem Moore established the artistic platform Prêt-à-partager which deals with art, fashion and art in public space in several African cities. Furthermore, she is the initiator and publisher of "Contemporary and", an online-magazine and virtual artspace on contemporary art seen from African perspectives.

Nana Oforiatta Ayim, Accra/London: Writer, director and art historian with expertise in contemporary African art. Her works have been shown at the New Museum in New York, the NGBK in Berlin and the Museum of African Diaspora in San Francisco. Her articles have been published in numerous magazines including frieze, Kaleidoscope, Arise, National Geographic, The Statesman and African Metropolitan Architecture. She has worked as curator for exhibitions and events at the Liverpool Biennial, the British Museum, the Royal Festival Hall, the Victoria and Albert Museum and other venues.

Jay Rutledge, Munich: Ethnologist, music journalist, producer, DJ and curator. Jay Rutledge has mainly worked as a freelance journalist for the Bayerischer Rundfunk since 1996. His main area of interest is urban African music culture. In 2002, he worked as curator for the “Urban Africa” music programme at the Ars Electronica in Linz, Austria. In 2004, he started a music label that promotes pop music produced in the metropolitan hubs of Africa. He has recently produced the Grammy-nominated album “I speak fula” by the Malian musician Bassekou Kouyate. Currently he moderates the radio shows “Breitengrad” and “Nachtmix” on Bayern 2 Radio.

At the jury session on 25/26 April 2013, the jury recommended awarding 1.4 million euros in funding to twelve projects in seven German states. The Executive Board of the Federal Cultural Foundation also decided to grant 88,600 euros to eleven research projects.

In the second round of funding, the jury of the TURN Fund awarded a total of 1,787,000 euros to 14 new projects.

Makido Film Vienna offers exciting internships to the two winners!

About Makido Film
Who is Makido? Makido stands for MArboe, KIno(German for cinema), and DOcumentary, but also alludes to the game Mikado, highlighting the playful nature with which we want to approach complex topics and that we want to treat our protagonists with particular care and sensitivity.
As traditional, value-determining groups, like political parties, churches but also families “in the conventional sense” lose their impact and significance in our society, what is shown on TV and in cinemas becomes increasingly important. It puts a special responsibility on those who produce films.

What is the focus of Time for Africa! ?
What comes to mind when you think of Africa? Images of poor starving people falling victim to natural disasters and corrupt politicians? The dominant images portrayed in the media serve only to enhance these stereotypical views.
And how are Europeans perceived in Africa? Aren’t they all well off with enough jobs for everyone?
Makido aims to challenge these stereotypes by telling nuanced and exciting stories about people living on the two continents.
“Rather than condemn or endorse the undoubted power of the media, we need to accept their significant impact and penetration throughout the world as an established fact, and also appreciate their importance as an element of culture in today’s world. The role of communication and media in the process of development should not be underestimated, nor the function of media as instruments for the citizen’s active participation in society…”

UNESCO declaration issued on 22 January 1982 at the International Symposium on Media Education in Grunwald, Germany.
We strongly believe that news about Africa should be informed by and produced in cooperation with independent African partners.
The lenses that we will apply are intercultural.

-Journalist and content developer
- Camera Assistant (work with experienced camera operators, use of broadcast cameras and ancillary equipment as well as lighting equipment)

- Editing Assistant (work with experienced video editors and directors, preparation, support and finishing of an edit, management of footage, archive handling and research)

Nigerians Have Never Known 10 Years of Peace Since Independence Day

Photo Credit: Nigeia's heads of state and presidents since 1960 to 2014.SUFIANIMAFOTO

Do you know that Nigerians have never known ten years of peace since the independence of Nigeria from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960.

Six years after independence, there was the first coup in January 1966 led by politically naive young Igbo soldiers under Majors Emmanuel Ifeajuna and Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu, followed by the counter-coup of 1966 by Northern military officers and the genocide of the Igbos in the north. The genocide precipitated Nigeria into a bloody civil war between the Igbo nation of Biafra led by Lt Colonel Emeka Ojukwu and the rest of Federal Republic of Nigeria led by Lt. Colonel Yakubu Gowon.

The Biafran-Nigerian civil war from 6 July 1967 – 15 January 1970 caused the deaths of over 100, 000 soldiers on both warring sides and over two million civilian casualties.

Fiver years after the war, another coup on 29 July 1975, led by Brigadier-General Murtala Mohammed disrupted the peace in Nigeria and followed by a counter coup on February 13, 1976 led by Lt. Col Buka Suka Dimka. Mohammed was assassinated in that aborted coup.

Then the new head of state Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo ruled from February 13, 1976 to October 1, 1979 when he handed over to Alhaji Shehu Shagari as the elected President of Nigeria. But in 1984, Major-Generals Muhammadu Buhari and Tunde Idiagbon toppled the administration of Shagari in a military coup. Then on August 27, 1985, their military junta was overthrown by Gen.Ibrahim Babangida and other members of the ruling Supreme Military Council (SMC). And Babangida became the longest military head of state of Nigeria until the June 12 crisis of 1993 caused his downfall and he was forced out of office on August 27, 1993. He handed over to the interim administration of Chief Ernest Shonekan. But after only three months, General Sani Abacha took over the government on November 17, 1993. He faced the June 12 crisis caused by the annulment of the June 12 presidential election won by Chief M. K. O. Abiola and later arrested and detained the political leader. Gen. Abacha ruled until he passed on mysteriously on June 8, 1998, followed by the equally mysterious death of Chief Abiola on July 7, 1998.

General Abdulsalami Alhaji Abubakar (rtd.) took over power as President of Nigeria from June 9, 1998 until May 29, 1999 when he handed over to Chief Olusegun Obasanjo after a successful presidential election he won as the presidential candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). And since May 29, 1999 to date, the crises plaguing Nigerians have increased and worsened with more political assassinations than all the previous governments since independence and also the worst political riots with the emergence of the terrifying Boko Haram insurgency and rampaging Hausa Fulani herdsmen attacking and killing over 5,000 people so far, including police and military officers. From former President Olusegun Obasanjo to the late President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua (16 August 1951 – 5 May 2010) and to his successor President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Nigerians have been living with nightmares that many of them think they are in the biblical Tribulation and the PDP government has failed to give them the assurance of good governance and peace. And only God can save them since their government has failed them.

Nigerians need new leaders who will be nation builders and not title chasers.

Nigerians Report Congratulates Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola on Winning the Osun Governorship Election

I
Engineer Rauf Aregbesola, the incumbent Governor of Osun State.

I thank God for State of Osun on the successful election of Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the incumbent Governor for a second term in the gubernatorial election held on Saturday August 8, 2014, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of Nigeria.

The returning officer, Vice Chancellor Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Professor Bamitale Omole, announced that Engineer Aregbesola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the poll in 22 Local Government Areas against Senator Iyiola Omisore of People's Democratic Party (PDP) who won in 8 Councils in the state.

What we need in Nigeria are good leaders, no matter their class, creed or color.

Why should the rest of nation suffer, because of the greed for power by some desperate politicians who are title chasers and not nation builders?
Thousands of innocent Nigerians, including women and children have been attacked, maimed and murdered since 1999 to date, because of the greed for power by tribal and religious bigots who have used their tribe and religion to fuel corruption and violence from the Niger Delta to Lake Chad.

If becoming President of Nigeria will cost the innocent lives of thousands of my fellow citizens, then may the Almighty God never let me become the President of Nigeria.
But the evil and greedy political title chasers and political contractors don't care to continue their bloody human sacrifice of Nigerians in their desperate struggle for selfish political power.
From the man in the bowler hat to the one in the skull cap.

May God judge and remove these cultists from the corridors of power.
They pretend to be Christians and Muslims, but their evil greed for power has shown that they don't fear God and are agents of demons.

The failure of our immigrations at the airport and borders has brought another evil plague into Nigerians and the innocent ones again are the victims.
For how long are we going to continue to permit this evil reign in the political leadership of Nigeria?
For how long are we going to continue to dine and wine with incompetent and corrupt political title chasers who have done us more harm than good?

Our destiny are not in the stars, but in our own hands.
All choices in life have consequences, for the best or for the worst.
So, mind how, what and when you choose in every stage of your life, whether in education, occupation, profession, religion and election.
The people of the State of Osun have made their choice and I thank God for them, because they have wisely made the right choice. And may the fear of God continue to guide and guard Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and the good people of Osun.
Congratulations!
HALLELUJAH!

ELECTORAL VICTORY SPEECH BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF OSUN, HIS EXCELLENCY, RAUF AREGBESOLA
DEMOCRATIC VICTORY OVER THE TYRANNY OF POWER

After an unnecessarily tense, tortuous and even traumatic process, the Independent National Electoral Commission this morning declared me as the winner of the Osun state governorship election on the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC). On behalf of my party, we are delighted to claim victory for our hard work, focus and dedication in this election. I thank the Almighty God for our triumph at the polls, against all odds.

To the good people of State of State goes our unflinching gratitude. We salute your steadfastness, courage, loyalty, commitment and fierce determination to defend your sovereign rights and the integrity of our nascent democracy. You have demonstrated in this election that in a democracy, power truly belongs to the people. I am humbled and honoured by your trust and abiding faith in me and my party. I pledge that your confidence in us shall never be betrayed or taken for granted.

Ordinarily, this should be a moment of joy and celebration consequent upon the hard earned triumph of the people’s will. However, this election shows that democracy is still gravely endangered in Nigeria. We witnessed gross abuse of power and, of due process before, during, and even after the actual voting process. It is so sad and unfortunate that what should be a normal, routine process was maliciously allowed to snowball in to a needless virtual war by the Federal Government and the PDP.

The State of Osun was unduly militarized in an unprecedented manner through criminal intimidation and psychological assault on our people. This election witnessed an abuse of our security agencies and amounted to a corruption of their professional ethics and integrity.
The security agencies were unprofessionally utilized in Osun state to harass, intimidate and oppress the people whose taxes are used to pay their salaries and provide their arms. Hundreds of leaders, supporters, sympathizers and agents of our party were arrested and detained. Also, hundreds of other innocent citizens including women and the aged were harassed, brutalized and traumatized. In spite of this condemnable repression and abuse of human rights, the unflagging spirit of our people triumphed.

Our victory is due to the steadfastness and resolute determination of our people to assert and defend their rights. The PDP obviously did all it could in a most desperate manner to steal the people’s mandate. A critical analysis of the elections shows a trend of general low voter turnout largely because of the atmosphere of deliberate tyranny and fear caused by the excessive militarization of the state. Despite our victory, it is pertinent to condemn and also point out the fact that the number of accredited voters in most local governments was less than half of registered voters. Against this trend, it is curious that the bulk of the PDP candidate’s votes came from only four Local Governments- namely Ife Central, Ife East, Ife North and Ife South. This suggests an inexplicable large turnout in his stronghold which is a curious departure from the general trend of voting across the state.

The outcome of this election, once again, shows the unswerving determination of our people to ensure that democracy triumphs in Nigeria. We have sent a strong signal to all and sundry that no might is powerful enough to thwart the will of the people. This should always strengthen our resolve to ensure that as from now on, every vote must not only be counted but must count in this country. Nobody or party must ever exercise power unreasonably at any level except in accordance with the will of the people to whom sovereignty belongs.

Let me assure the good people of Osun state that I appreciate that this victory is a reward for our hard work and commitment to the welfare of our people. I promise that we shall not rest on our oars but shall be spurred to work even harder with all well meaning people of the State of Osun and the generality of Nigerians to continue to enjoy your trust and support. You can be assured that we will leave no stone unturned in our continued effort to transform Osun into a land of progress, prosperity and peace for all with renewed fervour. I realize that this victory and the challenges we went through is a call to greater service and sustained commitment to our people. I pledge a rededication of myself to the service of our people and the strengthening of democratic values in Osun and Nigeria generally. Our country remains in political bondage and we must set her free.
