Lancelot Imasuen's World Press Conference on "Invasion 1897" Marks the Centenary of Oba Ovonramwen's Death in 1914

 Lancelot Imasuen directing "Invasion 1897".

Lancelot Imasuen had a world press conference Tuesday evening of January 14, 2014, on his historical epic film "Invasion 1897" and also to mark the Centenary of the death of Omo N’oba Ovonramwen in exile in Calabar on January 14, 1914, which is also the same month of the epoch of modern Nigeria by the amalgamation of the Lagos Colony, Southern and Northern protectorates on Jan 1, 1914.

The press conference held at his ICESLIDES Studios in Surulere, Lagos, attracted notable stakeholders in Nollywood, including his co-producer Famous Otakponmwen, celebrated Nollywood directors Chico Ejiro, Zik Zulu Okafor, the President of the Association of Movie Producers (AMP), Fidelis Duler, Founder/CEO of Abuja International Film Festival, Chinedu Ikedieze, MFR, popularly known as "Aki" in Nollywood movies, Hope Obioma Opara, President of Eko International Film Festival, Cyprian Orakpo, the Managing Director (CEO) of Transerve Disc Technologies Limited and his wife; Shaibu Husseini, Nigeria's leading film critic and Chair of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) College of Screeners, Victor Akande, Group Entertainment Editor at The Nation Newspaper and Benjamin Njoku of the Vanguard Newspaper who anchored the press conference.

The World Press Conference also highlighted the continuity of the cultural heritage of the classic Bronze Art of the Benin Kingdom and historical legacy of the great Benin Empire (1440–1897).
Imasuen answered questions after the screening of clips of the making of "Invasion 1897".
Both Shaibu Husseini and Zik Zulu Okafor commended the courage and faith of the director to make such a challenging historical film and said "Invasion 1897" is more than a story of the sacking of the Benin Kingdom by the colonial British Empire, but the fall of the last African empire. Imasuen said if Benin Kingdom had not fallen, the amalgamation of Nigeria in 1914 would not have happened. And his epic would be a cultural movement for the restoration of the great bronze artworks of Benin and the reparation for the colonial siege and pillage of the Benin Kingdom.
In 1999, the African World Reparations and Repatriation Truth Commission called for "the West" to pay $777 trillion to Africa within five years., but the western powers have ignored the calls for reparations.

The commemorative head is at the British Museum, while the pendant is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA.
When the CNN reported that Lancelot Imasuen was working on a $2 million film called "Invasion 1987" was in 2012 and since then, the production has gulped more millions of dollars.

"Invasion 1897" has an international cast, including famous British actors Rudolph Walker and Charles "Chucky" Venn and the top Nigerian actors include Charles Inojie, Paul Obazele, Segun arinze, Mike Omoriegbe as Oba Ovonrawmen and the late Justus Esiri in a cameo role.

Real Benin bronze artworks have to be made for the film and in fact a complete boat made of bronze was made. Moreover, accommodation and welfare of the cast and crew for weeks and months will gulp a lot of money for a large cast of over 1500 people and the leading local and foreign actors are not going to collect peanuts.

The first major dramatization of the Omo N’oba Ovonramwen was by the great Nigerian playwright, the late Prof. Ola Rotimi, whose epic Ovonramwen Nogbaisi was performed in 1971 and published in 1974 and became a popular study for both pupils of secondary schools and students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria as part of the syllabus for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and academic theses. The second major drama was Prof. Ahmed Yerima's Trials of Oba Ovonramwen which had a grand command performance in 1997, with the presence of the great grandchild of Ovonramwen, Solomon Uku Apolopolo Oba Ereduwa 1 and the British High Commissioner.

Invasion 1897, the Fall of the Last African Empire

"Invasion 1897" is an epic film based on the invasion of the Benin Kingdom by the British Empire in 1897 and looting the priceless ancient artifacts of the Benin kingdom, including the famous commemorative head and pendant of ivory mask representing Queen Idia (from court of Benin, 16th century) who was the mother of Esigie, the Oba of Benin who ruled from 1504 to 1550. The commemorative head is at the British Museum, while the pendant is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA.

Did you know that five years before the death of Omo n’Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi, the British Consul-General Moor, who captured, deposed and sent him on exile in Calabar committed suicide in Barnes, Middlesex in 1909. The great Ovonramwen must have cursed him for no one commits such a great sacrilege and escapes the wrath of the Benin Kingdom.

The film has been endorsed by the Benin monarch, Oba Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolopolo Erediauwa 1, who also honoured Lancelot Imasuen with the 2013 Oba Erediauwa Excellence Award.
The world premiere of "Invasion 1897" will take place on October 1, 2014..

Have You Read "The Prophet Lied"?

Because the prophet lied
Thousands have died
And thousands more will follow
Because of the lies of this strange fellow.
~ Ekenyerengozi Michael Chima

The Prophet Lied is a kaleidoscopic time capsule in poetry.
From the first poem to the last one, Chima's eclecticism runs like blood through the veins as he addresses all the issues of life on earth from the classic temporal to the spiritual in all existential circumstances with provocative thoughts and evocative figures of speech on every facet and aspect of what transpires in our contemporary world. He is an unapologetic historian of his beloved country Nigeria and a romantic philosopher of the vicissitudes of life. The power of his poetry is his compelling vocabulary and captivating imagery as he loses no sight of every human experience and so he misses nothing with a poetic sense of humour. The Prophet Lied may take Chima into the pantheon of modern poetry for the classical nature of his literature makes it a timeless treasure.

Prize winning Nigerian poet Ekenyerengozi Michael Chima is a student of the famous poet, philosopher, and artist, Kahlil Gibran (1883–1931) and Gibran's all time classic The Prophet has influenced his poetry since he read it 30 years ago before he published his first collection of original poems Children of Heaven in 1987 and followed by Scarlet Tears of London in 2006 under his popular pen name Orikinla Osinachi.
If you love Kahlil Gibran's poetry, then you will appreciate the romantic, political and philosophical poems of Michael Chima.

Senator Magnus Abe Shot And Five Children Killed In Port Harcourt

PRESS RELEASE

SHOOTING OF SENATOR ABE AND KILLING OF FIVE CHILDREN IN PORT HARCOURT BY THE POLICE A DECLARATION OF WAR ON RIVERS STATE AND HER PEOPLE –APC * DR IKANYA DEMANDS FOR THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF HON. IKE CHINWO

The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is shocked and shattered by the news of the unwarranted shooting this morning, of Senator Magnus Abe, the Senator representing Rivers South East zone and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), and Chief Tony Okocha, the Chief of Staff to Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and the killing of five children of Rivers State extraction by men of the Nigeria Police.

The Interim State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, did not at first believe the news until he verified it because he, like any other right-thinking individual, could not understand why policemen paid with taxpayers’ money could turn their guns against the people, including prominent citizens who are well known to them – thus ruling out the possibility of a mistake in the said shooting.

We wish to unequivocally condemn this premeditated murder of our five children and attempted murder of two prominent and innocent Rivers citizens by the State Police Command, which seems happy to transform into an army of occupation instead of discharging its constitutional role of safeguarding lives and property. This is a declaration of war on Rivers State and its people.

We are holding the State Police Commissioner, CP Joseph Mbu, responsible for the deaths of five innocent kids that maybe our future political leaders by this agents of darkness and the attempted murder on Senator Abe and Chief Okocha since the shooting was carried out by a team of regular police and Mobile policemen from MOPOL 19 on the orders of CP Mbu. Acting on CP Mbu’s orders, the trigger-happy policemen had stormed the APC rally organised by the Save Rivers Movement at the College of Arts and Science, Rumuola, Port Harcourt, and started shooting rubber bullets and teargas canisters to disperse the crowd. One of the rubber bullets hit Senator Abe, who fell to the ground and would have died instantly if his aides had not quickly grabbed him and rushed him to a hospital in D/Line in Port Harcourt. It is reported that the case of the Senator is very critical and arrangement is being made by Governor Amaechi to fly him out for medical attention if he recovers from coma. Chief Okocha’s case is a bit better as he was only shot on his legs and may be crippled for life if urgent attention is not given to him.
The police ordered everybody to vacate the venue. Several persons were injured as they scampered for safety. The police insisted that the rally must not hold, claiming that it would constitute a breach of the peace – a very spurious claim. And we are talking of a rally aimed at mobilising the public on the agenda of a political Movement, of which the police was duly informed!

We have shouted ourselves hoarse that CP Mbu is on a mission to cause mayhem and insecurity in Rivers State but, sadly, the powers that brought him to Rivers State for this mission not only continued to sustain him but also continued to empower him in his acts of impunity in Rivers State. This single man has on various occasions abused, insulted and vilified our elected State Governor in the person of Gov. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, claiming that he (Mbu) is the Chief Security Officer of Rivers State and not the Governor as stipulated by the Constitution of the Federal Republic!

This single man has on various occasions given police cover to GDI, the political pressure group of President Goodluck Jonathan and Supervising Minister for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, while denying the same services to other political groups in Rivers State, including Save Rivers State Movement while we sustain the Police with Rivers State fund. This single man since he came to Rivers State has promoted criminality in various ways and has even made himself a member of PDP, attending their meetings!

The National Assembly has found this man guilty and asked for his redeployment to no avail! The Rivers State Government and various pressure groups have called for his redeployment to no avail, all because the Federal Government is bent on using him to cause a war in Rivers State!

Senator Magnus Abe receiving attention at the hospital.

In view of the foregoing, we wish to make it clear that the blood of the five innocent kids that were slaughtered by the Police are on CP Mbu’s head and also on the heads of his sponsors. We meanwhile appeal to Nigerians to join us in praying for the survival of Senator Abe and Chief Okocha. By God’s grace, we shall overcome as the plot of intimidation will not deter us from salvaging Rivers State from the PDP led Federal Government whose hatred and disdain on our people are now legendary.

Finally, Dr Ikanya demands for the immediate release of Hon. Ike Chinwo within 24 hours unfailingly. Hon Chinwo who was once a member of the Federal House of Representatives representing Obio-Akpor Federal Constituency was arrested by the Police after the mayhem for no just cause

Long Life APC!

Long Life Rivers State!!

~ Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze,

SSA Media and Public Affairs to the Interim State Chairman, APC Rivers State.

The Autocomplete Truth

UN Women - The Autocomplete Truth The 21st century has been hailed as the century of women. Yet a recent Google search shows just how much prejudice and discrimination towards women and gender equality persist. The Autocomplete Truth builds on the international viral success of the print/web "Autocomplete Truth" advertising campaign (http://bit.ly/19zW628) from UN Women, developed by Memac Ogilvy & Mather Dubai that first revealed the depth of that discrimination.

The video argues that at this point in history, popular perception should be different and women should be seen as equal.

The Google search depicted in The Autocomplete Truth was conducted on 9 March 2013. We urge you to go ahead and try it -- what does your search show about gender stereotypes and the lack of equality for women's rights?

Nigerian Americans Are Among the Most Superior Cultural Groups in America

Jed Rubenfeld and Amy Chua, Yale Professors and co-author of The Triple Package: How Three Unlikely Traits Explain the Rise and Fall of Cultural Groups in America.

Nigerian Americans Are Among the Most Superior Cultural Groups in America

Prof. Ilesanmi Adesida, the first black man to be appointed the Provost/Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, United States of America.

An American couple and both fellow Yale Professors have identified Nigerian Americans among the most superior cultural groups in the United States of America. Amy Chua, the famous author of the bestselling book The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, and her husband Jed Rubenfeld have stirred up the hornet’s nest with their co-authored controversial book, The Triple Package: How Three Unlikely Traits Explain the Rise and Fall of Cultural Groups in America," that identified eight cultural groups in the United States superior to others. The new book noted: "uncomfortable as it may be to talk about," some "religious, ethnic, and national-origin groups are starkly more successful than others." And they are the Mormons, Cuban exiles, Nigerian Americans, Indian Americans, Chinese Americans, American Jews, Iranian Americans and Lebanese Americans. And they have been able to prove superior, because of a basic "triple package" formula: a superiority complex, insecurity, and impulse control.

•   Americans are taught that everyone is equal, that no group is superior to another. But remarkably, all of America’s most successful groups believe (even

if they don’t say so aloud) that they’re exceptional, chosen, superior in some way.

•   Americans are taught that self-esteem—feeling good about yourself—is the key to a successful life. But in all of America’s most successful groups,

people tend to feel insecure, inadequate, that they have to prove themselves.
•   America today spreads a message of immediate gratification, living for the moment. But all of America’s most successful groups cultivate heightened discipline and impulse control.

Nelson M. Oyesiku, MD, PhD, FACS | Atlanta, GA | Emory Healthcare.  Product of St. Gregory's College, Lagos and College of Medicine of the University of Ibadan has been appointed the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Publishers Weekly (starred):
“Provocative….Supported by statistics and original research….This comprehensive, lucid sociological study balances its findings with a probing look at the downsides of the triple package—the burden of carrying a family’s expectations, and deep insecurities that come at a psychological price.”

Kirkus Reviews:
“On a highly touchy subject, the authors tread carefully, backing their assertions with copious notes. Though coolly and cogently argued, this book is bound to be the spark for many potentially heated discussions.”

About the Authors

Amy Chua and Jed Rubenfeld are professors at Yale Law School. Chua, one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2011, is the author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, which unleashed a firestorm debate about the cultural value of self-discipline, as well as the bestselling World on Fire. Rubenfeld examined the political dangers of “living in the moment” in Freedom and Time; he is also the author of the international bestseller The Interpretation of Murder. The following are the Bestselling books by Amy Chua.

Inside Nigeria: President Jonathan’s Wasteful Spending on Presidential Jets

SOME of the details contained in the 2014 budget proposals of the Federal Government currently awaiting the approval of the National Assembly are as outrageous as they are disquieting. Those details have, as usual, exposed the government’s propensity for frivolities and plush living. Global trends however suggest that public officials should scale down the cost of governance and roll back casual luxuries in public office. But President Goodluck Jonathan is again making a public statement of opulence in a country where the majority of the people live below the United Nations poverty threshold.

It is obvious that what the government has succeeded in doing with the budget, as usual, is to use it to promote the ostentatious and wasteful lifestyle of government officials, while further impoverishing the Nigerian citizenry. When the government is not budgeting N2.2 billion for a “befitting banqueting hall in Aso Rock Villa,” as was the case last year, it is proposing N34.5 million for the feeding of lions in the Aso Rock Zoo. One particularly disgusting item in the 2014 budget is the provision of N1.6 billion as deposit for the purchase of a new aircraft for the presidential fleet that already boasts a record 10 planes and is ranked among the most luxurious worldwide.

The profligate presidential fleet is complemented with an extravagant motorcade and glamorous lifestyle. Only two domestic airlines have that many aircraft. Nigerians need to know how much money goes into the maintenance of this large fleet of non-commercial aircraft. In 2011, N18 billion was reportedly budgeted to maintain the presidential aircraft.
