Open Heavens at 2013 Akokwa Christian Elites Dinner

Bishop Charles Ubatu and Arc. Ifeanyi Odedo in prayers.

By Ingram Osigwe

A new trend will soon overtake the old norms at what used to be boisterous community and indigenes meetings and the people setting this new trend will be a new set of individuals known as Akokwa Christian Elites. Akokwa is a large and highly prosperous community in Ideato North L.G.A of Imo State. Among the sterling products of this community are many icons of entrepreneurship. The community has a lot of first class products from Universities both within the country and abroad. It is an assemblage of these progressive minds that formed the Akokwa Christian Elites, and sought to operate on a fresh tangent, the business of community meetings.

Community meetings are usually a gathering of indigenes from the same community, living abroad in a strange city. They gather themselves together once in a while to know each other and to pool some  little funds together through levies, to meet challenges of emergencies such as helping members in dire situations. Overtime, some community meetings have become so politicized and anarchical that most indigenes deliberately avoid them. It is in this situation that Akokwa Christian Elites stepped onto the terrain with a new approach.

                                                              Steve Okoronkwo.

Akokwa Christian Elites is an independent and politically neutral group of highly accomplished indigenes of the Akokwa Community. They are made up of businessmen and women, professionals, intellectuals and other categories of peace loving and socially constructive men and women who believe in the supremacy of God and who live a life guided by Him through the Christian faith. Funded by voluntary contributions from members, the group is committed to efforts towards the provision of good living conditions for everyone, as right of all Akokwa indigenes. Akokwa Christian Elites, in its quest to add values to the lives of Akokwa citizens have evolved several welfare programmes ranging from financial grants and empowerments for Widows every Christmas season to Banquets for the Royal fathers encouraging them to keep their thrones Godly. The group also organizes mass Christian Evangelical programmes (crusades), University Scholarship Schemes for indigent students. One of the activities of the association is the annual dinner during which the association invites illustrious citizens from around Nigeria to speak to indigenes, especially the young and upcoming, to serve as platforms of encouragement and inspiration towards positive self actualization.

Mr. Hope Obioma Opara and Miss Amaka.

The last edition of the annual dinner was held on Saturday June 15th 2013 at the main banquet hall of the Lagos Sheraton and Towers Hotel. The event had all the respect and fanfare of a serious Christian evangelical revival crusade, making new guests to wonder whether a man of God such as Benny Hinn was coming from USA to minister to the people. The decorations at the venue and the total ambience was very edifying, lifting those present, away from their present surrounding, into a peaceful celestial atmosphere.

Ukeje Chimezie.

By 6 pm, most guests have arrived and the programme went into full swing. Engr. Jojo Udensi, said the opening prayer, inviting God to be the Chairman of the occasion, urging Him to arise in His Glory and take charge of all proceedings. He reiterated that the essence of the meeting was to encourage and to inspire, and therefore called upon God Himself to come and do that by His own perfect way.
To further relax the gathering and foster a cozy spirit of comfort and camaraderie, food was immediately served after the opening prayer and everything else was done with an informal ease and brotherly love and affection, observing to boundaries of class and escutcheon.

Mr. Bona Egbo.

In that atmosphere, some notable indigenes were call to the high table amidst applause. It was remarkable that indigenes of super high profile, found time to come and assemble, mingle and network with their fellow kindred men in that gathering. Profiles cut across every strata of the economic pyramid and within that social ambience, there was equality and unity, with no class distinctions. Next, Engr. Greg Obioha one of the founding fathers and executives of the association, reeled out the vision of Akokwa Christian Elites. He reiterated that the association was founded upon a Godly and welfarist premise and was instituted by a unity of purpose from like minds who just freely want to contribute to the development of the community.
The high point of the gathering was the special prayers by Bishop Charles Ubatu. He brought down the glory of God into the place, by appealing to His love and mercy and claimed the blessings of Abraham upon the entire Akokwa community. The fervency of prayers, rendered by all in the gathering, both the poor and the super-rich alike, only showed that God was present in the place and that the heavens were opened to Akokwa community in that very instance. Indeed the fire of God did fall and the soul lifting that was felt was akin to signs and wonders.

Barrister and Dr (Mrs). Okey Muomalu.

Chief and Mrs. Chijioke Awalite.

Chief and Mrs. Israel Orijiekwe.

After the prayers, Mr. Chris Iyoha gave life touching stories of his travails and triumphs in life. The aim was to encourage others by showing that the blessings of God is meant for all and that no condition is permanent in life. He sought to show that even in the darkest dungeons of life, God is still there and that persistence in prayer and hard work is al that is needed for all to succeed.
An interlude of praise and worship followed after which the guest speaker, Arc Ifeanyi Odedo  held the audience spellbound with his ministrations and testimonies. His speech was a parody of encouragement and inspiration upon all that gathered and was a perfect healing balm upon all spirits of the people in the gathering.
Mr Charles Anusionwu gave the vote of thanks  and  the president of Akokwa Christian Elites Lagos Chapter, Mr.  Clifford Onyeje made some annoucements on the activities of the Association. Closing prayers were then said by Mr. Chika Egboluche.
The event was a dreamlike episode, leaving all with a rare feeling of hope and encouragement and soul deep joy. There was no doubt that it was a hybrid specimen of a community gathering in a deep Christian perspective.

Majority of Nigerians Want A Single Term of 4 Years for Every President

Abuja, Nigeria. June 18th, 2013
Latest weekly Snap Poll results released by NOI Polls Limited has revealed that about 6 in 10 Nigerians (63%) think a term of between 0 to 4 years is sufficient to effectively rule Nigeria. This shows a 1 point increase from a previous poll conducted in March 2011 to measure the citizen’s perception on the sufficient time needed to rule the country. Also, the majority (54%) of those aware of the recently proposed six-year single term bill are not in favour of this bill as 53% disapprove of any amendment to the current bill that permits a four year tenure with a maximum of 2 terms. An interesting find shows that 1 in 10 Nigerians (12%) agree with ‘life presidency’ where the President is allowed to stay in power indefinitely up from 10% in a similar poll in March 2011.  These are a few of the key findings from the recent Length of Service Snap Pollconducted in the week of June 10th 2013.
According to the 1999 Nigerian constitution, sections 135(2); 137(1)(b); 180(2) and 182(1)(b), Presidents and Governors of Nigeria are bounded by four-year tenure, with a maximum of two terms. In the past, several attempts have been made to amend this area of the constitution. One of such attempts was during the reign of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, where a third term was advocated. In 2011, President Goodluck Jonathan advocated a seven-year single-term for elective offices. In line with this, recently, the Senate Committee reviewing the 1999 Constitution suggested non-renewable single six-year tenure for the office of President, Vice-President, governors and their deputies. However, the recommendations given by the Senate panel excludes the President and current governors from partaking from the proposed length of tenure if it is eventually endorsed.[1]

The proposed six-year single tenure by the National Assembly did not fall short of generating varied reactions from Nigerians. An  interview conducted by Business Day Newspaper regarding the six-year single tenure showed that some groups in support of the Bill were of the opinion  that the six- year single tenure would enable the president and  the governors have sufficient time to make tangible accomplishments while others who oppose it believe it would disrupt good governance.[2]

Against this background, NOI Polls conducted its latest poll on the Length of service in order to ascertain the views of Nigerians on how long the tenure of the President should be and to explore their perceptions regarding the proposed six-year single term.

Respondents to the poll were asked five specific questions. The first question sought to determine the views of Nigerians on an indefinite stay of the President in office: Do you think the President should be allowed to stay in office indefinitely? The overall majority (88%) are of the opinion that the President should not be allowed to stay in power indefinitely.  It is interesting to note that 12% of the respondents responded affirmatively as they think the president should be allowed to stay indefinitely.  Although this proportion (12%) is the minority, it does highlight the varied meaning of democracy in Nigeria, as this implies that some Nigerians can and will advocate for “Life Presidency”.

When the results are analyzed according to geo-political zones, the South-West zone accounted for the highest proportion of respondents (95%) that disagree to an indefinite tenure of the President. This is followed by the North-Central zone with 91% and the South-South zone with 89%. In addition the North-East zone accounted for the highest proportion of respondents (17%) that actually advocate for the President to stay in power for life.

[2] Business day: Mixed reactions trail proposed six-year tenure for president, governors

Responses for this question were compared to a previous poll conducted in March 2011. After two years the perception of Nigerians towards the President staying in office indefinitely has not changed significantly. There is only a 2 point drop with those opposed to an indefinite stay by the President 90% in 2011 versus 88% in 2013.

The second question sought to ascertain the opinions of Nigerians on how long a President should be allowed to stay in office to allow for effective rule of Nigeria. Respondents were asked: What do you think is a reasonable length of time for the President to effectively rule the country? In reaction to this question, the overall majority (63%) are of the opinion that a term which lasts between 0 - 4 years is appropriate to rule the country effectively. This is followed by 33% who think 5 - 8 years is a reasonable time while 4% think the term should last for more than 8 years.

From the geo-political zones perspective, the North-West zone and North-Central zones both had the same and highest proportions of respondents (68%) that say a 0-4 year range is a reasonable tenure for the President to effectively rule the country. Furthermore, the North-East zone accounted for the highest number of respondents (39%) that are of the opinion that a range of 5-8 years tenure is realistic for an effective rule of the President. Out of the minority that is advocating for a term of 8 years and above, the South-East and North-West zones had the highest proportions with 8% and 7% respectively.

Comparing the findings from 2011 and this current poll on ‘the reasonable length of tenure for an effective rule of the President’, once again there has been no significant change in the position of Nigerians. There was a 1% increase in the proportion of respondents in support of 0-4 year term from 2011 to 2013 (62% versus 63%). Also,  there was a 3% reduction each in the proportion of respondents that say 5-8 years is sufficient for the President to effectively rule Nigeria and  the proportion that think more than 8 years will suffice.

Subsequently, in order to ascertain the level of awareness of the proposed six-year single term bill, respondents were asked: Are you aware of the proposed single term bill which advocates single 6 year tenure for Presidents and Governors? Findings show that the overall majority (54%) are not aware of the proposed 6-year single term bill while 46% claimed awareness of the proposed amendment to the length of tenure of President and governors.

Further analysis across geo-political zones shows that respondents with the highest level of awareness of the proposed six-year single term are from the North-Central zone (56%), followed by the South-South zone (55%). Furthermore, the South-East and North-West zones had the highest proportion of respondents that showed no awareness of the proposed bill with 67% and 65% respectively.

Respondents that indicated their awareness of the proposed six-year single term (46% of the total) were asked the following question: To what extent do you agree or disagree with the proposed single term bill? The overall majority 54% (22% + 32%) disagree showing that they are not in support of the proposed bill while 35% (23%+ 12%) agree and are in support of the bill. Furthermore, 11% neither agree nor disagree to the proposed change in the length of rule of the President.  From the geo-political standpoint, findings show the North-West zone accounted for the highest proportion of respondents (68%) who disagree to the proposed six-year single term bill, while the South-South zone (53%) has the highest proportion of respondents that agree to the bill. Furthermore, the North East has the highest proportion of respondents that are neutral (22%).

Finally, to support the findings in the previous question respondents were asked: Do you think the current system that permits a 4-year tenure with a maximum of 2 terms for the President and other elected officials should be amended? The overall majority (53%) responded negatively indicating they do not think it should be amended thus showing their approval of the current 4-year tenure with a maximum of 2 terms. Furthermore, 47% of respondents say yes to the amendment of the current system. This further supports the finding in question 4 where the majority (54%) disagrees to the six-year single term.

Analysis by geo-political zones reveals that the North-East zone had the highest proportion of respondents (64%) who do not favor an amendment of the length of tenure of Presidents. Moreover, the South-South zone accounted for the highest proportion of respondents (58%) that favor an amendment of the current system of 4-year with a maximum of 2 terms, this is followed by the South-West zone with 54%.

In conclusion, the results from this current poll have revealed that the majority of Nigerians who are aware of the recently proposed 6-year single term bill are not in favor of this bill. Majority of this group also does not favor the amendment of the current system of 4-years and a maximum of two terms. The level of awareness of the proposed single term bill is not high as the slight majority is not aware of it. Furthermore findings revealed that although there is a two year interval between the current poll and the one conducted in 2011, the perception of Nigerians towards the length of tenure of the President has not changed significantly. The majority (63%) are still content with a 0-4 year term as an appropriate period for Presidents, Governor and their Deputies to make valuable impact on the nation.

Survey Methods
The opinion poll was conducted on June 10th to 13th 2013. It involved telephone interviews of a random nationwide sample. 1,006 randomly selected phone-owning Nigerians aged 18 years and above, representing the six geopolitical zones in the country, were interviewed. With a sample of this size, we can say with 95% confidence that the results obtained are statistically precise - within a range of plus or minus 3%. I Had A Great Father, One Of The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boys Of World War II

(In memory of my father Sunday Eke)

Daddy, you were a warrior from Umuahia in Eastern Nigeria and proved yourself as one in Burma during the World War 2 and returned home as one of the heroes of the West African Frontier Force (WAFF).
But you never told me about your exploits in Burma, because I was too young to understand until when you passed on and my uncles gave me the graphic illustrations and even how you always used your World War II bugle to call a fellow Word War II hero in the village.
The only thing you showed me was your violin which you never taught me how to play, because you did not want me to do music. And to prove it, you threw away my first recording contract from the U.S when I was only 18.
But at 18 from my earnings as a TV script writer and TV puppeteer I could afford to pay thousands of naira for your medical bills for months until you passed away that fateful day on November 19, 1983.
So, unforgettable and so regrettable, because you left behind a heavy burden. Yet I thank God for the grace that has seen me through the challenges of your absence.

Daddy, I am still proud of you and guess what?
I am launching outdoor cinemas in Lagos on Saturday June 22, at the Old Broad Street Prison grounds opposite the General Hospital on Lagos Island. In fact, you would be wowed to see how they turned the prison into the Freedom Park, and transformed where Prof. Wole Soyinka was jailed during the Nigerian civil war into a tourist attraction.
Just a walk from where Sheila Cinema and Royal Cinema used to be and not so far away from our most frequented Kings Cinema in Lafiaji.
I remember the many evenings you often took us to the open air Kings Cinema, Sheila, Royal and Plaza to watch the movies of cowboys and Indians fighting, starring Marion Mitchell Morrison (May 26, 1907 – June 11, 1979), better known by his stage name John Wayne and war films like my all time favourite "A Bridge Too Far" in 1977 and also Bollywood stars Dharmendra and Jeetendra with Bollywood beauties like Hema, Malini and Helen.
It would have been great if you could just appear at the launch of Screen Naija One Village, One Cinema on Saturday and I would be proud to introduce you to the audience.

Daddy, my memories of you are unforgettable and if I continue, I will never stop recalling them all.
All I can say now is, I miss you every time I see a movie or hear the violin and of course the bugle.

Happy Father's Day my great daddy!

Governor Rochas Okorocha Has Done Well for Imo State - Pastor Gods Elect

Special Interview with Pastor Gods Elect, General Overseer, Angelhearts Christian Mission (Storehouse of Blessings), Owerri, Imo State.

SIR, YOU ARE FROM IMO STATE AND A PROVEN LEADERSHIP COUNSELOR. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY OF THE GOVERNMENT OF OWELLE ROCHAS OKOROCHA TWO YEARS AFTER AND OUR MARCH TOWARDS 2015?

Yes, I am from Imo State. Ihitte, Otulu in Ahiara, Ahiazu-Mbaise L.G.A. to be precise. The bible says in Romans 13 v 1  “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God” so if you expect I am going to run my anointed mouth in the press about my Governor, sorry, I will do no such thing. Rather, I will continue to pray for him and his team even when he does badly hoping they will not be bereft of divine wisdom and human compassion as they reel out, execute and enforce their state policies.
I would say anyway, that His Excellency, Owelle Rochas has raised the stake of governance in Imo-State since after late Dee Sam Mbakwe’s tenure and has provided in Imo State a yardstick for future governments to rely upon to do better and for us the good citizens of Imo-State, probably (time will tell!) a bench-mark for judging good governance.
Our Lord’s prayer says  “thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven”- so you see God’s intention for leaders! It is a common biblical saying in proverbs that when the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; shouldn’t this be the ambition of this government?
I have witnessed great improvement in infrastructural development and in human capacity building but unfortunately a seeming decline in human resource enhancement and legitimate government structural organs.
So obviously, you are sure to see those who may think he is not doing well or those who readily celebrate him, depending on which divide they belong. This however is the joy of democratic government and provides the leadership a focus on subsequent plans. All I can say, is that he still has the people’s mandate and more time ahead before the next elections so he should concentrate and consolidate on his plans and vision for Imo State and national politics rather than give in to the temptation of running after national political office, for now! Our God is a God of process and he should respect God’s choice in him and allow himself complete his assignment in this State. Owelle is a man in a hurry to fulfill his dream of success but where there is good counseling; God’s time is the best and at the appointed time, there will be fullness of purpose. Amen! There is nothing wrong with his personal interactive governance style as long as it does not displace the rule of law. Charm and public office as complimentary as it may seem can actually be in conflict with each other and this is what he needs to constantly discern.
Let me finally say that during the elections of 2011, it was the people’s cry in prayers and their resolute decision to protect their votes that God heard, granted and answered in the choice of Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha. It was not his personality, wealth, influence, network, party affiliation nor was it any caucus agreement of any such that gave him the mandate. All power belongs to God! Therefore in 2015 again, it is our prayers and trusting our commitment of the whole process to God, that will count and He will choose for us in His answer who will be in Douglas House. My advice is that everyone seeking to be used for this opportunity must continue in sincere prayers to seek for divine wisdom and be compassionate to the good people of this state. In the meanwhile, we will watch, pray and give our counsel wherever and whenever it is sought. To God be the Glory!

PASTOR, RECENTLY THE CHURCH IN NIGERIA SEEM TO HAVE JOINED FORCES WITH GOVERNMENT TO DECLARE WAR ON THE RISING PROFILE OF HOMOSEXUALITY AND LESBIANISM WITHIN OUR SOCIETY. WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THIS?
Sincerely speaking, the Church has remained the custodian of moral values and will certainly not close its eyes or fold its arms to such endemic evil set to corrupt human creation. Yes, I do know that the national legislative arm of government passed a bill on this matter that provided a 14 years jail term for offenders and maybe their accomplices and this is waiting assent by Mr. President.
Having said this, I would rather see it the other way and that is that Government has risen to complement the Church in her continued efforts to regain our societal moral values.
This is a very unfortunate development and let me say quite strongly that as a Christian, it is absolutely against God’s will for Humanity. At birth, we had our sex designations and more recently, a genetic study has shown that no one is born with such disoriented gene constitution as to warrant such. This is surely a result of persuasions and exposures to unhealthy tendencies and immoral inclinations emanating from our negative environmental interactions. We have been struggling to deal with the issues of fornication and adultery and as if that were not enough, these too are becoming so prevalent. This is the devil’s bold plan in these last days to steal God’s joy and mock us as God’s creation and it is really so unfortunate that it cuts across all social strata and in some instances have become a defining factor for worldly accomplishments or achievements. What a shame!
It is a very sensitive issue and we should not accept it but only be careful not to throw away the baby’s bath water together with the baby. We need to pity those we identify as such and give them the compassion we would give to sick persons because they have had their minds and bodies abused. For some, they would need our tolerance in view of their confessed remorse fulness and repentance so as to undergo spiritual and body rehabilitation needed to fully recover themselves of this satanic captivity. The word of God in Philippians 3 v 21 encourages and strengthens our belief in looking up to Christ Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself”.  If we believe that the voice of the people is the voice of God, then let us rise up and together condemn this evil and wicked act, protect and save the yet unadulterated young ones and adults amongst us. God help us. Amen!

SIR,WITH THE STATE OF AFFAIRS NOW,WHERE EXACTLY DO YOU THINK NIGERIA IS HEADING?

It is not an issue of who is the president or his or her personality but an outcome of divine time. We are certainly heading for a better future under the pragmatic leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan. Most times people have associated his name “Goodluck” with what they hope to see but let me tell me prophetically, that his name carries what challenge he will have to deal with “ill luck|”?.
But then again, look at it this way, what lies ahead of us? Oh sure, challenges, trails, temptations. If you watch very carefully, it is as if all the problems of Nigeria over the years are now being deposited on the present leadership. You can describe his administration as a major sewage channel - it smells awfully and has a lot of debris in it but yet is the only reason why the environment is clean, safe and healthy. This is his predicament but I would say, a good one at fulfilling God’s purpose. It is enormous but grace is available to triumph over these challenges and just this will Jonathan do. In Psalm 34 v 19 “Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all”.  It shall be good. Amen!
If we are determined as a nation and walk in fear of God, we will make it to the glorious point and then have every reason to celebrate our success. A word of note here: let us enjoy what we are now, for we are what we are by His grace and look ahead with excitement into the future for the promises that await us. I pray we will “Trust in the LORD with all our heart; and lean not unto our own understanding.  In all our ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct our paths”  (proverbs 3 vs 5 & 6)

REV, WHY DO MOST MEN OF GOD MAKE THEMSELVES TOO DIFFICULT TO REACH? IS THIS RIGHT?

I believe we are passionate to touch the  lives of our various  congregations and others who may need our attention at any time. However, you must understand that the office of the Priest or Pastor is such that demands a very high level of discipline requiring adherence to ministerial protocol, here meaning norms and ethics but unfortunately these may not be convenient to some. Much as I have said this, I do rather believe that most of us if not all, gracefully receive and reach out to as many people as possible with a strong keenness of the Spirit on a daily basis yet in the eyes of many, this is not satisfactory.
Remember, of course Jesus said in Matthew 9 v 37 (paraphrased) ; "...the
harvest is truly plenty but the labourers are few". I am convinced, we will keep trying our best, trusting that by the absolute grace of God, we will not fail or become irresponsible to our divine obligation. Regarding myself, I am easily reached directly on +234(0) 703 9610 123 / (0)818 1093 999 or by e-mail throughelectsofgod@yahoo.com
It is well.
