PRESS RELEASE

SHOOTING OF SENATOR ABE AND KILLING OF FIVE CHILDREN IN PORT HARCOURT BY THE POLICE A DECLARATION OF WAR ON RIVERS STATE AND HER PEOPLE –APC * DR IKANYA DEMANDS FOR THE IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF HON. IKE CHINWO

The Rivers State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is shocked and shattered by the news of the unwarranted shooting this morning, of Senator Magnus Abe, the Senator representing Rivers South East zone and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), and Chief Tony Okocha, the Chief of Staff to Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and the killing of five children of Rivers State extraction by men of the Nigeria Police.

The Interim State Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, did not at first believe the news until he verified it because he, like any other right-thinking individual, could not understand why policemen paid with taxpayers’ money could turn their guns against the people, including prominent citizens who are well known to them – thus ruling out the possibility of a mistake in the said shooting.

We wish to unequivocally condemn this premeditated murder of our five children and attempted murder of two prominent and innocent Rivers citizens by the State Police Command, which seems happy to transform into an army of occupation instead of discharging its constitutional role of safeguarding lives and property. This is a declaration of war on Rivers State and its people.

We are holding the State Police Commissioner, CP Joseph Mbu, responsible for the deaths of five innocent kids that maybe our future political leaders by this agents of darkness and the attempted murder on Senator Abe and Chief Okocha since the shooting was carried out by a team of regular police and Mobile policemen from MOPOL 19 on the orders of CP Mbu. Acting on CP Mbu’s orders, the trigger-happy policemen had stormed the APC rally organised by the Save Rivers Movement at the College of Arts and Science, Rumuola, Port Harcourt, and started shooting rubber bullets and teargas canisters to disperse the crowd. One of the rubber bullets hit Senator Abe, who fell to the ground and would have died instantly if his aides had not quickly grabbed him and rushed him to a hospital in D/Line in Port Harcourt. It is reported that the case of the Senator is very critical and arrangement is being made by Governor Amaechi to fly him out for medical attention if he recovers from coma. Chief Okocha’s case is a bit better as he was only shot on his legs and may be crippled for life if urgent attention is not given to him.
The police ordered everybody to vacate the venue. Several persons were injured as they scampered for safety. The police insisted that the rally must not hold, claiming that it would constitute a breach of the peace – a very spurious claim. And we are talking of a rally aimed at mobilising the public on the agenda of a political Movement, of which the police was duly informed!

We have shouted ourselves hoarse that CP Mbu is on a mission to cause mayhem and insecurity in Rivers State but, sadly, the powers that brought him to Rivers State for this mission not only continued to sustain him but also continued to empower him in his acts of impunity in Rivers State. This single man has on various occasions abused, insulted and vilified our elected State Governor in the person of Gov. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, claiming that he (Mbu) is the Chief Security Officer of Rivers State and not the Governor as stipulated by the Constitution of the Federal Republic!

This single man has on various occasions given police cover to GDI, the political pressure group of President Goodluck Jonathan and Supervising Minister for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, while denying the same services to other political groups in Rivers State, including Save Rivers State Movement while we sustain the Police with Rivers State fund. This single man since he came to Rivers State has promoted criminality in various ways and has even made himself a member of PDP, attending their meetings!

The National Assembly has found this man guilty and asked for his redeployment to no avail! The Rivers State Government and various pressure groups have called for his redeployment to no avail, all because the Federal Government is bent on using him to cause a war in Rivers State!

Senator Magnus Abe receiving attention at the hospital.

In view of the foregoing, we wish to make it clear that the blood of the five innocent kids that were slaughtered by the Police are on CP Mbu’s head and also on the heads of his sponsors. We meanwhile appeal to Nigerians to join us in praying for the survival of Senator Abe and Chief Okocha. By God’s grace, we shall overcome as the plot of intimidation will not deter us from salvaging Rivers State from the PDP led Federal Government whose hatred and disdain on our people are now legendary.

Finally, Dr Ikanya demands for the immediate release of Hon. Ike Chinwo within 24 hours unfailingly. Hon Chinwo who was once a member of the Federal House of Representatives representing Obio-Akpor Federal Constituency was arrested by the Police after the mayhem for no just cause

Long Life APC!

Long Life Rivers State!!

~ Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze,

SSA Media and Public Affairs to the Interim State Chairman, APC Rivers State.

The Autocomplete Truth

UN Women - The Autocomplete Truth The 21st century has been hailed as the century of women. Yet a recent Google search shows just how much prejudice and discrimination towards women and gender equality persist. The Autocomplete Truth builds on the international viral success of the print/web "Autocomplete Truth" advertising campaign (http://bit.ly/19zW628) from UN Women, developed by Memac Ogilvy & Mather Dubai that first revealed the depth of that discrimination.

The video argues that at this point in history, popular perception should be different and women should be seen as equal.

The Google search depicted in The Autocomplete Truth was conducted on 9 March 2013. We urge you to go ahead and try it -- what does your search show about gender stereotypes and the lack of equality for women's rights?

Nigerian Americans Are Among the Most Superior Cultural Groups in America

Jed Rubenfeld and Amy Chua, Yale Professors and co-author of The Triple Package: How Three Unlikely Traits Explain the Rise and Fall of Cultural Groups in America.

Nigerian Americans Are Among the Most Superior Cultural Groups in America

Prof. Ilesanmi Adesida, the first black man to be appointed the Provost/Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, United States of America.

An American couple and both fellow Yale Professors have identified Nigerian Americans among the most superior cultural groups in the United States of America. Amy Chua, the famous author of the bestselling book The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, and her husband Jed Rubenfeld have stirred up the hornet’s nest with their co-authored controversial book, The Triple Package: How Three Unlikely Traits Explain the Rise and Fall of Cultural Groups in America," that identified eight cultural groups in the United States superior to others. The new book noted: "uncomfortable as it may be to talk about," some "religious, ethnic, and national-origin groups are starkly more successful than others." And they are the Mormons, Cuban exiles, Nigerian Americans, Indian Americans, Chinese Americans, American Jews, Iranian Americans and Lebanese Americans. And they have been able to prove superior, because of a basic "triple package" formula: a superiority complex, insecurity, and impulse control.

•   Americans are taught that everyone is equal, that no group is superior to another. But remarkably, all of America’s most successful groups believe (even

if they don’t say so aloud) that they’re exceptional, chosen, superior in some way.

•   Americans are taught that self-esteem—feeling good about yourself—is the key to a successful life. But in all of America’s most successful groups,

people tend to feel insecure, inadequate, that they have to prove themselves.
•   America today spreads a message of immediate gratification, living for the moment. But all of America’s most successful groups cultivate heightened discipline and impulse control.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Publishers Weekly (starred):
“Provocative….Supported by statistics and original research….This comprehensive, lucid sociological study balances its findings with a probing look at the downsides of the triple package—the burden of carrying a family’s expectations, and deep insecurities that come at a psychological price.”

Kirkus Reviews:
“On a highly touchy subject, the authors tread carefully, backing their assertions with copious notes. Though coolly and cogently argued, this book is bound to be the spark for many potentially heated discussions.”

About the Authors

Amy Chua and Jed Rubenfeld are professors at Yale Law School. Chua, one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2011, is the author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, which unleashed a firestorm debate about the cultural value of self-discipline, as well as the bestselling World on Fire. Rubenfeld examined the political dangers of “living in the moment” in Freedom and Time; he is also the author of the international bestseller The Interpretation of Murder. The following are the Bestselling books by Amy Chua.

Inside Nigeria: President Jonathan’s Wasteful Spending on Presidential Jets

SOME of the details contained in the 2014 budget proposals of the Federal Government currently awaiting the approval of the National Assembly are as outrageous as they are disquieting. Those details have, as usual, exposed the government’s propensity for frivolities and plush living. Global trends however suggest that public officials should scale down the cost of governance and roll back casual luxuries in public office. But President Goodluck Jonathan is again making a public statement of opulence in a country where the majority of the people live below the United Nations poverty threshold.

It is obvious that what the government has succeeded in doing with the budget, as usual, is to use it to promote the ostentatious and wasteful lifestyle of government officials, while further impoverishing the Nigerian citizenry. When the government is not budgeting N2.2 billion for a “befitting banqueting hall in Aso Rock Villa,” as was the case last year, it is proposing N34.5 million for the feeding of lions in the Aso Rock Zoo. One particularly disgusting item in the 2014 budget is the provision of N1.6 billion as deposit for the purchase of a new aircraft for the presidential fleet that already boasts a record 10 planes and is ranked among the most luxurious worldwide.

The profligate presidential fleet is complemented with an extravagant motorcade and glamorous lifestyle. Only two domestic airlines have that many aircraft. Nigerians need to know how much money goes into the maintenance of this large fleet of non-commercial aircraft. In 2011, N18 billion was reportedly budgeted to maintain the presidential aircraft.

100th Anniversary Issue of Current History

2 Jan 2014 16:18 Africa/Lagos After A Hundred Years, Current History Looks To Its Past And Future

The nation's oldest continuously published international affairs journal was founded a century ago during the First World War.

PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- With the publication of its centennial issue, dated January 2014, Current History marks a milestone: America's oldest world affairs journal has been published continuously since 1914. Its history is truly the history of the twentieth century.

Founded in 1914 by The New York Times to supplement daily newspaper coverage, the fledgling publication sought to explain a new kind of international conflict to Americans. Current History from its inception has been a key source of information on international affairs for an engaged readership.
Contributions to Current History have come from poets and playwrights, journalists and diplomats, statesmen and scholars. George Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, Leon Trotsky, H.L. Mencken, Winston Churchill, Marcus Garvey, W.E.B. Du Bois, Bernard Baruch, John Dewey, Lewis Mumford, Thomas Wolfe, Reinhold Niebuhr, Henry Steele Commager, Walter Lippmann, Hans Morgenthau, and many other public intellectuals have written in its pages. Thinkers such as Joseph Stiglitz, Condoleezza Rice, Barry Eichengreen, Nancy Birdsall, Steven Pinker, Robin Wright, and Francis Fukuyama continue their tradition today.

January's 100th anniversary issue includes essays on major global trends by Michael Mandelbaum, Larry Diamond, Sheila Jasanoff, G. John Ikenberry, Joseph S. Nye Jr., Scott D. Sagan, Uri Dadush, Bruce Russett, Amrita Narlikar, Omar Encarnacion, Martha Crenshaw, and Nicholas Eberstadt.

The New York Times sold the magazine in 1936; it has been privately held since. Daniel Mark Redmond is now the publisher. Previously, his grandfather, Daniel G. Redmond (1943-1955), and father, Daniel G. Redmond Jr. (1955-1988), held that position. Redmond notes that the magazine has had just four editors in the past 70 years: Daniel G. Redmond, Carol L. Thompson (1955-1991), William W. Finan Jr. (1991-2006), and Alan Sorensen (2006-2013). In January 2014, Joshua Lustig, formerly managing editor, takes over the editorship.

As an independent source of international relations scholarship and journalism, with no institutional affiliation, Current History remains unique among American journals of world affairs after a hundred years of publication. Old-fashioned in its look and feel, in its ownership, and most importantly, in its dedication to thoughtful, clear analysis of global events and trends, Current History is so old that it's new again.

It is Not Easy To Govern Lagos, Because of Influx of People From other States

Most of those who are ignorant of the facts and figures of Lagos don't even know that Lagos state with an estimated population of 21 million people has more people than all the eastern states combined and it is official that Lagos is:
the largest city on the continent as a whole, Lagos is the economic hub of Nigeria, contributing the majority of the country’s gross domestic product. It is home to one of the busiest ports in the region, particularly important for its massive oil-exporting industry, but the city has so much more than that. An enormous music scene is credited for the birth of everything from Nigerian hip hop to Afrobeat, and its film industry (nicknamed “Nollywood”) is incredibly influential and popular. - See more at: http://afkinsider.com/35192/most-populous-cities-in-sub-saharan-africa/2/#sthash.fW7ZB0qo.dpuf

Many of the other states with even smaller populations cannot even develop them and that is why more people continue to leave these underdeveloped states for Lagos.

The failures of other state governments have made their youths to migrate to the mega city of Lagos; attracted by the endless opportunities in the fast developing mega city of Lagos. But most them are unskilled and can only be regular supply of cheap labour. But they are also those who breed kids they cannot feed and have increased the population of socioeconomic liabilities and worsen the problems and troubles of jobless people who often turn to crime and anti-social behaviour. They are the ones who cause the problems of over-stretched infrastructure and social amenities most critics blame the Lagos state government for. Lagos state government did not build the illegal structures of slum dwellers who later turn around to accuse the government of neglect.

Children play in the Makoko slum, in Lagos, Nigeria where houses accessible only by canoe sit on stilts above polluted waters of the Lagos lagoon, January 21, 2011.

It is like the illegal residents of Monkey Village on Bonny Island accusing the River state government of neglect and asking for the same goodies of the ultra modern Nigeria LNG Residential Areas. A slum is always seen showing up near a new modern estate and before you say "Èkó ò ní bàjé oooooo!", the slum dwellers are messing up the master plan of the state government and if the government demolishes their slum, they turn against the state.

The other states, and especially the oil producing states should go and see what the smart Arabs are doing with their own oil money and see that even their state capitals can become the United Arab Emirates of Nigeria. And then they can stop their jobless youths from rushing to Lagos to overstretch the social amenities and alter the master plans of the Lagos state government.

The Most Expected Nigerian Films in 2014

The most expected Nigerian films in 2014 are Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen’s most ambitious film production to date, the historical epic "Invasion 1897", Kunle Afolayan's historical fiction "October 1" and Izu Ojukwu’s thriller "'76", the historical epic on the catastrophic botched military coup that led to the assassination of Head of State Gen. Murtala Muhammed in 1976 in Lagos. All the residents of Obalende (including my family and I) and Ikoyi near Dodan Barracks witnessed that bloody coup that fateful day on February 13, 1976.

“’76” is star-studded with some of the best actors and actresses in Nollywood, including Ramsey Nouah, Rita Dominic, Ibinabo Fiberisima, Chidi Mokeme, Memry Savanhu, Adonijah Owiriwa, Daniel K. Daniel, Nelly Ekwereogu and Shuaibu Ebenehi Adams.

Kunle Afolayan’s “October 1” recently won the Best Fiction film trailer of the 2013 International Movie Trailer's Festival, the first online movie trailer contest showcasing 1-4 minute trailers from around the world. “October 1” has an international cast of accomplished actors and actresses led by Sadiq Daba as "Inspector Waziri"; Aderupoko as "Sergeant Afonja"; Fabian Lojede as "Corporal Omolodun"; Demola Adedoyin as "Prince Aderopo"; Kehinde Bankole as "Miss Tawa", Nick Rhys as "Winterbottom"; Lawrence Stubbings as "Tomkins" and Colin David Reese as "Rev Dowling".

Synopsis:
It’s September 1960, and with Nigeria on the verge of independence from British colonial rule, a northern Nigerian Police Detective, DAN WAZIRI, is urgently despatched by the Colonial Government to the trading post town of Akote in the Western Region of Nigeria to solve a series of female murders that have struck horror in the hearts and minds of the local community. On getting to Akote, more murders are committed, and with local tension high and volatile, Waziri has a race on his hands to solve the case before even more local women are killed. Set against the backdrop of the national celebratory mood of the impending independence, Waziri is pulled into a game of cat and mouse as he and the killer try to outwit each other… leading to the climatic end in which the life of a popular local female teacher and village belle, TAWA, is held in the balance. Waziri has to race against the clock to capture the killer, save Tawa and solve the crime before the British flag is lowered and the Nigerian flag raised on Independence Day… October 1.

"Invasion 1897" is the most anticipated film to celebrate the Nigeria Centenary in 2014 (modern day Nigeria came into being on January 1, 1914), and to mark the centenary of the death of the great King of Benin, Omo n’Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi in exile in Calabar on January 14, 1914, Lancelot Imasuen will host special guests from corporate Nigeria and leading journalists at his Lagos studios on January 14, 2014. "Invasion 1897" (Nogbaisi Ovonramwen) is perhaps the most daring film project in the history of the Nigerian film industry, because no previous movie can be compared to it, both in scope and perspective of the historical context. The epic is based on the invasion of the Benin Kingdom by the British Empire in 1897 and looting the priceless ancient artifacts of the Benin kingdom, including the famous commemorative head and pendant of ivory mask representing Queen Idia (from court of Benin, 16th century) who was the mother of Esigie, the Oba of Benin who ruled from 1504 to 1550. The commemorative head is at the British Museum, while the pendant is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. The film has an international cast of proven actors such as famous Caribbean born British Actor Rudolph Walker, OBE, Charles "Chucky" Venn, Annika á Lofti,Hannah Raehse-Felstead, Nollywood stars Segun Arinze Paul Obazele, Mike Omoregbe who played the lead role as Oba Ovoramwen, Charles Inojie and the late Justus Esiri.
