Nigeria: Princewill Initiates 120M Naira Reality TV Show for Orphanages
Nigeria: Princewill Initiates 120M Naira Reality TV Show for Orphanages
~ By Nkemjika Chileetam
In an unique show of concern for the less privileged, Prince Tonye Princewill, a PDP Chieftain and Leader of Princewill Political Associates (PPA) has pumped in the sum of N120M in collaborate with Adonis Productions to organize the first ever Reality TV show for orphans under the umbrella of Melody Shelters.
In an online press release made available by Chief Eze Chukwuemeka, the image maker to Prince Tonye noted that: “The show will bring together amazing talents from different orphanages across Nigeria. The program that started with 40 Orphanages now has eight finalists currently camped in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital for the grand finale coming up in a few weeks
According to the release, eight finalists have each been assigned a dedicated musical coach who is responsible for training them on their chosen songs for the first two weeks before the stage performances commence this weekend. STV and CTL are expected to air this unique event from Friday 13th of April 2012 and will be showing every Friday and Saturday at 5:30pm while on Sunday it will show at 5:00pm.
The show will feature singing groups from eight finalist orphanages with the winning three taking home the final set of prizes. The featured orphanages are: Gidan Bege Orphanage (Benue State), Godswill Ophanage (Kogi State),Adonai Orphanage (Kaduna State), Rachael Homes (Abuja), Susanna homes (Abia State), Lifetime Caring Orphanage (Rivers State), Edo Orphanage (Edo State) and Compassion Orphanage (Edo State).
Performances will be judged by professional musician judges with the viewers at home also having a chance to contribute. All the events and performances will be recorded and broadcast on television. Eighteen million Naira will be won in prizes by the first three with the winning orphanage taking home Ten million Naira in cash.
Prince Tonye Princewill is a politician of repute, who anchors his foray in politics on his need to engineer change and sees his involvement in such projects as a way of appreciating the less privileged and the down trodden. With Melody Shelters, he is using his little resources to affect their lives whilst also acknowledging and supporting the contributions of people like Adonijah Owiriwa who like him have chosen to use their craft as a vehicle for change. To him life is nothing if we can't impact on those who have little as opposed those who have a lot.
This is the fourth initiative so far, in as many months – already he has given 25 million to the Port Harcourt Polo club, 26 million towards Microfinance for rural women, several million towards setting up a 3D studio for film academy scholars and now this. His eagerly awaited entertainment fund is expected to be launched next month in a soon to be announced collaboration with Grafton and Tamsrecords with the Consiglieres and other corporate partners already signed up. Add this to his previous works with women groups, scholarship programs, employment generation opportunities, youth mentoring initiatives and already attracted investment and his commonly used phrase continues to make sense, “You are blessed to bless others.”
It is expected that these efforts of his can encourage others to help in their own little way. "Orphans did not ask to be born and can only believe God has a purpose for their life. Many of us have been fortunate enough to know the feeling of being loved and cared for by parents. That in itself is a blessing. If we can give back something and touch someone, God will never forget it, even if the orphans do. But if you ask me I will tell you that my experience with orphans is they do not underestimate the power of human kindness because that is what makes the difference between whether they will eat or not. Help them and you will never regret it”, Princewill appealed.

Benin Remains a Country of Emigration and Destination, IOM Migration Profile Confirms
GENEVA, April 13, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The newly released IOM Migration Profile of Benin shows a marked increase in the number of Beninese nationals emigrating to other African West African countries.
According to the report, demographic growth, poverty, unemployment, increased living costs, difficult climatic conditions and dwindling natural resources continue to push many Beninese to migrate internally from rural to urban areas, within the region and beyond.
Data from the Ministry in charge of relations with Beninese abroad indicate that close to 4, 4 million people- almost half the entire population- have emigrated, overwhelmingly to neighbouring countries.
Figures show that 98 per cent reside in countries of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), including Nigeria (69%), Cote d'Ivoire (20%), Senegal (6.9%), Niger (1.6%) and Gabon (1%).
The report shows only 0.7 per cent of the total number of Beninese migrants go to Europe, out of which France remains the favourite destination (83.7%), followed by Italy (7.7%) and Germany (6.1%).
Sizeable Beninese communities are also found in the United States of America, Canada, China, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Japan.
Analysing the educational levels of Beninese emigrants, the report shows that more than 40% have completed primary education, 11.4% secondary education and 34.4% higher education. In 2007, more than 3,600 Beninese students were studying abroad, mostly in French universities.
Regional migration flows into Benin have also increased, according to the Migration Profile. Data from the 2002 Population and Housing Census shows that the number of immigrants rose from some 78,000 in 1992 to some 157,000 in 2002, an increase of more than 100 per cent in 10 years.
The largest foreign communities in Benin are from Niger (34.8%), Togo (22.1%), Nigeria (20.5%) and other West African countries (11.6%).
This surge can be attributed to political stability, improved economic activities and to porous borders. The Profile shows that these immigrants are mostly independent workers (40 %) with another 40 per cent not declaring their social or professional status.
Migration contributes to poverty reduction through remittances from migrant workers, according to IOM's Migration Profile of Benin. Official data from the Central Bank of West African States show that, from 2000 to 2009, annual net transfers by migrants averaged USD 28.9 million, representing 2.4 per cent of the country's GDP.
The Profile notes that Benin has no migration policy document. However, there are legislative and regulatory texts governing migration issues, which tie into sub regional agreements on regional integration, particularly within ECOWAS and UEMOA, and to international agreements and conventions.
The real challenge in managing migration include formulating a migration policy to be implemented through specific programmes and building an institutional framework to better coordinate the work of various structures involved in migration.
It also notes that data on migration are rare and, where they do exist, they come from various sources that do not always adopt the same approaches and concepts, which makes using and comparing data difficult.
This Profile was funded by the European Union as part of the project “Partnership for Labour Migration Management: EU- Benin, Cameroun, Mali, Senegal”, under the lead of GIP International, a grouping of the main institutional French actors in the areas of employment, vocational training and migration.

Will Rita Dominic Win the 2012 AMAA Best Actress Award?
Rita Dominic
Will Rita Dominic Win the 2012 AMAA Best Actress Award?
NOMINEES FOR AMAA 2012 BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
1. Nse Ikpe Etim - Mr & Mrs
2. Yvonne Okoro - Single Six
3. Ama K. Abebrese - Ties That Bind
4. Rita Dominic - Shattered
5. Uche Jombo - Damage
6. Millicent Makheido - 48
7. Kudzai Sevenzo-Nyarai - Playing Warriors
The competition for the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) 2012 Best Actress in a Leading Role will definitely be between the Nigerian actresses Rita Dominic for Shattered, Nse Ikpe Etim for Mr & Mrs and Uche Jumbo for Damage versus the South African actresses Millicent Makheido for 48 and Kudzai Sevenzo for Playing Warriors.
The nominees for the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) 2012 Best Actress in a Leading Role are among the best actresses in the continent and from all the reviews by film critics, everyone of them deserves to win the highly coveted trophy, but the prize can only be won by one actress.
Of the three leading Nigerian actresses, I am tipping Rita Dominic, because she gave an Oscar performance in her gripping role as Keziah Njema in the Kenyan movie Shattered by Gilbert Lukalia and is the most challenging in all her years of acting so far.
Rita Dominic in Shattered.
Nse Ikpe Etim as Mrs. Abba in Mr & Mrs by Ikechukwu Onyeka is not the best she can do so far as she admitted herself.
Nse Ikpe Etim
“Let me say that my most challenging role hasn’t come yet. I am grateful to the directors I have worked with and their impact on me. I am also grateful for those productions, but I still think that we can go further. I haven’t reached the point that I will say I can’t do this anymore. So I think I still have the most challenging roles ahead of me. It is still yet to come,” Nse said.
Yvonne Okoro as Titania in Pascal Amanfo‘s Single Six is commendable, but cannot be compared to Rita Dominic’s role as the troubled young woman Keziah Njema whose traumatic childhood in a seemingly ideal middle class family becomes a precursor to a life of turmoil, depression, and self destructive behaviour. This role brought out the best in Rita’s acting prowess beyond all the previous roles she has played in scores of Nollywood movies.
Yvonne Okoro
Rita’s closest challenger in this psychoanalytical scenario is Uche Jombo as Sarah in Moses Inwang’s Damage as she really portrayed the manic depressive insanity of a traumatized abused woman for which film critics have said is her best performance to date.
Uche Jumbo
I don’t see Ama K. Abebrese as Buki Ocansey in Ties That Bind as a strong contender even though she won the 2011 African Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in Leila Djansi’s multiple award winning Sinking Sands. In fact, Leila Djansi the same director of Ties That Bind said Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde as Adobea Onyomena would have been a better contender than Ama K. Abebrese and was surprised when the Chairman of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) Screening Committee, Shaibu Shaibu Hussein defended their choice of the Ghanaian actress.
Ama K. Abebrese
"…As far as we are concerned, the story of Ties that Bind revolves round the medical doctor who returns to revive the village clinic and encounters two other women with situations that bound them. The filmmaker may have intended for all three ladies to play lead, but in terms of the 'weighting' of the roles played by each character, Ama K is lead while the others, including Ebbe Bassey (the woman with the daughter that was defiled and infected), assist in advancing her story., " said Mr. Husseini.
Kudzai Sevenzo
Millicent Makheido
The beautiful Millicent Makheido who played Margaret Mphahlele "Maggie" in Bonginhlanhla Ncube’s 48 and Zimbabwean Kudzai Sevenzo who played Nyarai in Rumbi Katedza’s Playing Warriors are the other strong contenders who will really threaten Rita’s chances.

Appointment of African Entrepreneur for a Green Revolution in Africa
Jane Karuku
Appointment of an African entrepreneur at the head of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA)
NAIROBI, April 13 2012/African Press Organization (APO) / - Kofi Annan, who chairs the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), today announced the appointment of a renowned Kenyan entrepreneur, Jane Karuku, as President of the organization.
Photo: http://www.apo-mail.org/AGRA-President-Jane-Karuku.png
Logo: http://www.apo-mail.org/agra.jpg
Ms. Karuku was selected after a rigorous international selection process. She joined AGRA after leaving Telkom Kenya, a France Telecom subsidiary Orange, where she held the position of assistant director general. She replaces Dr. Namanga Ngongi, who is retiring after five years as the first president of AGRA.
"Hundreds of thousands of poor rural households in Africa have benefited from actions taken by AGRA and, under the direction of Ms. Karuku, this organization will continue this great work to pave the road to prosperity for African farmers and ensure their food security, "said Annan.
Ms. Karuku's career spans over 20 years, most of those years having been spent in the agricultural sector. She has held leadership positions in a number of successful international companies, including Farmers Choice and Cadbury Limited where she held the position of General Manager responsible for 14 countries in East and Central Africa. Ms. Karuku was educated at the University of Nairobi and holds an MBA from National University of California.
"Agriculture in the form of small farms is a way of life in Africa, strewn with challenges but also great opportunities. I am very excited and very proud to play a role in this process of transforming the lives of millions of small farmers, and I look forward towards the day when we can sit back and pay tribute to this process of transformation, real "gift" to the African people and future generations, "said Ms. Karuku.
Annan also praised the outstanding work done by Dr. Namanga Ngongi in establishing AGRA as a major African agricultural organization.
"I want to thank Dr. Namanga Ngongi for his role in the development of AGRA in an efficient organization and recognized worldwide. Under his leadership, AGRA has achieved significant results and is already on track to achieve its mission as a catalyst for a Green Revolution in Africa. "
AGRA was founded in 2007, with funding and technical support provided initially by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In these initial financings were added those of other international foundations, donor agencies, multilateral financial institutions, corporate donors and banks. AGRA and its funding partners are working closely with governments, agricultural organizations and smallholder farmers in African countries through a unique alliance to develop and maintain a green revolution in Africa.
Since its inception, AGRA has worked to develop the economic empowerment of smallholder farmers in Africa and to improve their food security. She has contributed to efforts to address the major challenges facing African agriculture faces.
Among the main achievements to date include the development of strategies to transform the main African countries breadbasket capable of feeding the entire African continent. AGRA, which also supports higher education programs of the next generation of plant biologists and agronomists, has sponsored nearly a hundred students in master's and doctorate from several African universities. AGRA also supported the establishment and strengthening of 60 new African seed companies locally, she was involved in developing markets in Africa and is working with farmers' associations to ensure that small farmers comply quality standards and effectively manage contractual agreements with major buyers. Closely with several major financial partners, AGRA has established risk sharing arrangements that can make available to small farmers and food SMEs millions of dollars in soft loans.

Wikileaks "The World Tomorrow" Premieres on RT Channels On April 17.
13 Apr 2012 17:33 Africa/Lagos
Julian Assange Exclusive Project to Premiere April 17 on RT
MOSCOW, April 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- "The World Tomorrow," an exclusive new project by Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, will premiere on all RT channels on April 17.
The new series will be simultaneously broadcast from Moscow across RT's three channels in English, Arabic and Spanish, and from Washington, DC on RT America. April 17th also marks the 500th day of the international blockade of Wikileaks funding.
The show was filmed in London, where Julian Assange has remained under house arrest for over a year, without being officially charged. The series sees Assange, the series creator and host, engage with a wide range of global notables – in his opinion, those shaping the global agenda of tomorrow.
Assange's top-secret guest list includes "figures...who normally simply would not be given a voice on TV at all. What is fair to say is that the majority of what they have said to me they could not say on a mainstream TV network."
"We do not want to kill the buzz and the intrigue by revealing the name of the first guest," stated RT editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan. "But I have no doubts that this particular guest and this interview will lead to calls to shut us down from some especially hawkish personalities who have little respect for freedom of speech."
Assange explained why he chose RT to premiere "The World Tomorrow." "When we look at international networks there's really only two that are worth speaking about, and that's RT and Al Jazeera," noted Assange. "When we were looking what international broadcaster...we wished to partner with, we looked to see what was the penetration into the United States. RT had greater penetration into the United States."
RT, a global international news network that broadcasts in English, Arabic and Spanish from its studios in Moscow and Washington, DC, is available to 480 million viewers, or 25% of all cable subscribers, worldwide. In the UK RT is more popular than Bloomberg, according to the recent survey by Kantar Media. RT became the first news channel in the world to pass 700 million views on YouTube. In 2010, RT became the first ever Russian channel to garner a nomination for the prestigious Emmy International Award, in the News category. RT streams online at the network's website RT.com.
