Nigerian Advocate Oyelakin Taiwo Oladayo Award Wins 2014 Omololu Falobi Award for Excellence in HIV Prevention

2014 Omololu Falobi Award For Excellence In HIV Prevention
Research Community Advocacy Presented Posthumously to Nigerian Advocate Oyelakin Taiwo Oladayo Award honors passionate young advocate lost too soon

“All of us have to choose to respond to the challenges of our own times. For me the challenge is HIV/AIDS”
– Omololu Falobi

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Oct. 31, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Oyelakin Taiwo Oladayo, a passionate advocate for the rights of young people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS, has posthumously received the fifth Omololu Falobi Award for Excellence in HIV Prevention Research Community Advocacy. The award was accepted on behalf of his family by fellow Nigerian advocate Olayide Akanni during the closing plenary of the HIV Research for Prevention (HIVR4P) conference.
Taiwo focused his work on the rights and dignity of those who are most marginalized. He helped form the first network of young people living with HIV in Nigeria (APYIN). He also helped create Youths and Adolescents Network on Population and Development in Africa (AFRIYAN) and, recently, the Network of Young People Living with HIV in Africa (AY+N). Taiwo was the co-chair of the Global Network of People Living with HIV Y+ Leadership Initiative. He was also a 2013 AVAC Advocacy Fellow hosted by Positive Treatment for Action in Nigeria. His Fellowship project sought to amplify the voices of young women as plans for Option B+ were being considered in Nigeria, and ensured their recommendations were included in national prevention plans. On Thursday, 17 April 2014, Oyelakin Taiwo Oladayo was killed in a car accident in Lagos.

The Omololu Falobi Award highlights the essential role of community advocacy and leadership in HIV prevention research. It celebrates the life and values of the late Omololu Falobi, a long-time HIV advocate and journalist who founded Journalists Against AIDS (JAAIDS) in Nigeria. Falobi was an instrumental pioneer member of the Nigerian Treatment Access Movement, and co-founded the New HIV Vaccine & Microbicide Advocacy Society. Omololu was killed in Lagos, Nigeria in October 2006. The award serves as an ongoing legacy that recognizes his commitment and lasting contributions to HIV prevention research advocacy.

"Omololu was a visionary leader and activist, who accomplished much in his too-short life. He dedicated himself to powerful advocacy for HIV and HIV prevention research in Nigeria, Africa and worldwide," said Olayide Akanni. "His legacy lives on through this award and through the work of JAAIDS. Taiwo reminds us of our friend Omololu in many ways. He was a brilliant young Nigerian advocate lost to us too soon. He embodied Omololu's ideals in many ways by making the work of HIV advocacy his life's work as well. In his short professional life, he proved himself a leader and an inspiration to many; he believed that HIV prevention research was an important part of addressing the epidemic."

"Taiwo's work is an inspiration for us all. He exemplifies the passion and commitment that is the lifeblood of advocacy and activism. We must all continue to speak with his voice and amplify his message," said Anna Forbes, recipient of the 2012 award.

For the 2014 award, the coordinating committee, with endorsement from past recipients, past reviewers and advocates, unanimously decided to present the award to Taiwo instead of seeking nominations for deserving candidates. A plaque and cash award will go to the family he left behind, including his new bride and his father.
"Taiwo's passion for his work inspired all of those around him. I know his work made a difference in the lives of young women and other Nigerians living with HIV. I am so happy that his fellow advocates have given him this honor," said Abiola Oladayo, his wife.

The award was presented by Manju Chatani-Gada of AVAC, who directs the AVAC Advocacy Fellows Program.
"Taiwo had many dreams and many aspirations for the future - as an international activist, as a photo documentarian, as a politician, as many things. Like Omololu, Taiwo lived his life in a hurry. And like him, he left his mark on all those who met him," Chatani-Gada said. "Taiwo's work exemplified the spirit of this award to recognize community advocates' critical role in research and in getting new options to those who need it most."

The Omololu Falobi Award For Excellence In HIV Prevention Research was conceptualized and the process coordinated by the African Microbicides Advocacy Group (AMAG) in partnership with AVAC: Global Advocacy for HIV Prevention Research, the Global Campaign for Microbicides (GCM), International Rectal Microbicide Advocates (IRMA), Journalists Against AIDS in Nigeria (JAAIDS), the New HIV Vaccine and Microbicide Advocacy Society (NHVMAS), and the Treatment Action Movement Nigeria (TAM). Joining the coordinating committee this year are the International Rectal Microbicides Advocates (IRMA) and the African AIDS Vaccine Programme (AAVP).

The award honors Omololu Falobi, a visionary leader who continues to inspire many people and projects. He was a leading HIV/AIDS activist, an advocate for prevention research, and an exceptional journalist. Omololu made enormous impact in Nigeria and beyond – he nurtured and/or led campaigns related to prevention, treatment and research; won multiple awards nationally and internationally; and earned a tremendous reputation from all who had the privilege to work with him. He established the Journalists Against AIDS in Nigeria (JAAIDS), co-created the Nigeria-AIDS eForum, co-founded the New HIV Vaccine and Microbicide Advocacy Society of Nigeria (NHVMAS), was an instrumental pioneer member of the Treatment Access Movement (TAM) Nigeria and a key leader of the African Civil Society Coalition on HIV and AIDS.

Financial support for the Award since 2008 comes from AMAG, AVAC, GCM, FHI360, NHVMAS, the Open Society Institute in South Africa and UNAIDS.

Paul Kagame, Africa's Most Popular President on Twitter

Meet Rwanda's Paul Kagame, Africa's Most 'Tweep' President KT Press reports on the president's unmatched popularity on social media KIGALI, Rwanda, Oct. 30, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- According to KT Press, he is a tweep, and a tech addict! Rwanda's President Paul Kagame is described by the International Telecommunications Union as the "Digital President." Social media analysts say Kagame is Africa's most conversational president. Kagame has the biggest following on Twitter than any other African leader.

Photo - http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20141029/155225

By mid-June, his verified handle @PaulKagame, had 456,000 followers. On Wednesday, October 22, Kagame's account had hit 590,782 followers. On the following day, when he celebrated his 57th Birthday, his account jammed with thousands of best wishes. Kagame tweeted back promptly, "Very much appreciated; [all] those who made my [day] by the [good wishes] sent to me!" Five days later, he attracted 37,900 new followers, hitting 628,684 total followers.

Twiplomacy, a study by Burson-Marsteller, a global public relations and communications firm, said Kagame was trailing Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, in June with more than 50,000 followers. The tide has suddenly changed, with Kagame toppling Kenyatta with 32,000 more followers.
Back home in Rwanda, the "Digital President" has invested over $100 million in broadband internet with over 50% of the population using mobile phones.

In the real world, Kagame is the most conversational leader, who often gets into memorable Twitter exchanges. He usually hits back hard. Make a comment and you certainly will be put on spot to defend.  Twiplomacy's Burson-Marsteller reviewed 643 official accounts in 161 countries and 77% of African governments on social media. He found out Pope Francis (@Pontifex) is the most influential world leader on Twitter, with his tweets mostly in Spanish, being re-tweeted an average of more than 10,000 times each. US President Barack Obama is the most followed leader globally.

In the east and central African region, Tanzania's leader Jakaya Kikwete, with @jmkikwete account, has 203,301 followers. Uganda's Yoweri Museveni @KagutaMuseveni has 65,600 followers.
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are exponentially larger countries than Rwanda, with a massive presence on Twitter, but their leaders are way behind Kagame in the tech world.

Not even South Africa's President Jacob Zuma with @SAPresident (338,900 followers), comes close, despite being leader of Africa's most advanced economy and a tech savvy population. Nigeria's Good luck Jonathan, at the helm of Africa's most populous nation, has about 80,000 followers.

Aminu Waziri Tambuwal Will Connect APC to the Majority of Nigerian Youths

The defection of Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (born January 10, 1966), Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria from the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has left President Gooodluck Jonathan panicking as he summoned all the leaders of the PDP to an emergency meeting yesterday.

Tambuwal representing the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State is one of the most charismatic young political leaders of the new generation and is more liked than President Jonathan, because he has a cross over appeal across all the tribes and religions in Nigeria. The majority of the youths see him as one of the fearless leaders of the vanguard for the nation building of a New Nigeria and actually will fill the wide gap between the leadership the APC and Nigerian youths. He will certainly connect with them as the countdown to the next presidential election begins.

Once the APC can connect with Nigerian youths, the largest voting bloc, then PDP may lose the political leadership of Nigeria in 2015.

2ace Idibia is the Most Liked Nigerian Musician with the Highest Fan Base

PRESS RELEASE: 2FACE; MOST LIKED NIGERIAN MUSICIAN WITH THE HIGHEST FAN BASE

Abuja, Nigeria. October 28th, 2014 – Latest Weekly Poll results released by NOIPolls has revealed that Tuface Idibia, popularly called "Tu Baba", is the most liked Nigerian Musician(13%). The next top three musicians liked by Nigerians are ‘Davido’ (7%), ‘Frank Edwards’ (6%)and ‘Wizkid’ (5%) among others. An assessment of trends in the Nigerian music industry revealed that the vast majority of adult Nigerians (80%) have the culture of listening to the Nigerian music, irrespective of age and geo-political zones. Although Nigerian music has evolved over time, the culture of Nigerian music listenership has been greatly preserved given the fact that the younger generation aged 18-21 years has the highest listenership (83%) to Nigerian music. Further findings revealed that Nigerians are more inclined to listen to Religious music (50%), followed by Hip-Hop (33%), Highlife (21%) and R&B (21%).

An evaluation of how Nigerians access their music revealed that most Nigerians get their music either from supermarkets (29%), hawkers (27%) or from dealers (22%); at times not necessarily licensed music distributors. A considerable proportion of Nigerians admitted to accessing their favorite Nigerian tunes or music library by downloading through mobile devices from family and friends (17%) or from online sources (19%), which may likely be a contributing factor to Nigerian music piracy. More findings revealed that a higher proportion of Nigerians aged 18-21 years get their music free through online downloads (40%) and downloads from the devices of family and friends (29%), thus this age-group is most likely to promote piracy in the industry. These were some of the key findings from the Nigerian Music Industry Poll conducted in the week ofOctober 20th 2014.

Brief Background
The Nigerian music industry is regarded as the heart of African music; it has produced global stars ranging from Fela Kuti in the 1970’s to D-banj in the early 2000’s. Dating back to the 1920’s, the Nigerian music industry has been an integral part of the society which represents the many divergent cultures and religions of the people.  The music in that era consisted of palm-wine and highlife music.  Palm wine music birthed the famously known Juju music which has been popular throughout the 20th century. Following palm-wine and juju music, Apala emerged in the late 1930’s as a means of rousing worshippers after the fasting of Ramadan.
[1]

With the introduction of modernism, recording technology became more advanced, the gangan talking drum, electric guitar and accordion were incorporated into juju. During this time, Nigerian music started to take on new instruments and techniques introducing the popular Rhythm and blues (RnB), Soul and Funk. Highlife was prominent amongst the Igbo people in the 1950’s. Fuji music made its first appearance in the late 1960s, named after Mount Fuji in Japan. In the 90’s and early 2000’s, the nation was dominated by foreign music; radio stations and night clubs played a miniscule percentage of Nigerian music. Today in Nigeria and across the continent, the music industry has spread beyond its borders into the African region and African diaspora markets in the UK and the US.
[2]

Irrespective of its tremendous achievements and popularity, the industry has been plagued with a number of obstacles that have hindered its progress such as rampant music piracy.  Piracy is a major issue across the entire Nigerian entertainment industry. As of 2008, pirated music sales were estimated to be at 30million. This has ruined the careers of many of Nigeria’s greatest creative minds and led to significant divestment of many multinational companies.
[3]

Against this background, NOIPolls conducted it recent poll on the Nigerian Music Industry to assess current trends in the Music industry and the accessibility of its products. To achieve this, respondents were asked 4 specific questions and findings are illustrated in the charts below.

Key Findings
To estimate the proportion of Nigerians that listen to Nigerian music, respondents were asked:Do you listen to Nigerian Music? Findings revealed that the vast majority of adult Nigerians(80%) listen to Nigerian music, irrespective of age and geo-political zones. This finding points out that the culture of Nigerian music listenership has been greatly preserved, though Nigerian music has evolved over time. This is supported by the fact that the younger generation aged 18-21 years has the highest level of listenership (83%) to Nigerian music.

On the other hand, 20% of Nigerians do not listen to Nigerian music. A variety of reasons could be responsible for this low interest in music generally or specifically Nigerian music. Furthermore, the highest proportion of Nigerians that do not listen to Nigerian music are resident in the North-West (35%).

Nigeria Fuels Socio-Economic Development By Modernizing Railway System

A Chinese funded standard gauge railway construction project that connects the Nigerian federal capital Abuja with the country's central commercial hub Kaduna, is nearing completion and is expected to reduce road congestion and the time it takes to travel between the two points. The Abuja Kaduna line, scheduled to be completed by December 2014, is co-funded by the China Exim bank and the government of Nigeria. And as CCTV's Peter Wakaba reports this project is just one of many that are transforming lives in Nigeria.

Nigeria Fuels Socio-Economic Development By Modernizing Railway System
Government contract will fund two standard gauge locomotives

ABUJA, Nigeria, Oct. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Nigeria has intensified its efforts to drive the country's socio-economic transformation via the revitalization of the nation's railway system.

The Nigerian Government recently approved a N1.1billion contract to develop two electric diesel engines. The 10-month commissioned project—awarded to Nigeria's Messrs CNR Darling Locomotives, Rolling Stock Limited and CCECC Nigeria Limited—comes on the heels of the country's 25-year plan to modernize the Nigerian railway system facilitating the creation of new jobs and implementing routine training for Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) employees.

The N1.1 billion contract will fund locomotives equipped with 2,800 kilowatts for use on standard gauge tracks, a modern rail type standard in roughly 60 percent of lines around the world. Future projects will work to update Nigeria's existing—however older narrow gauge lines.

"The survival and indeed the extent of development of any economy depends very significantly on the extent of development and efficiency of its transportation system," Minister of Transport Sen. Idris Umar said in a statement this summer. "Our intention is to improve on the infrastructure of the NRC to ensure it increases passengers and freight movements."

Senator Idris Umar, Minister of Transport.

Nationwide rail projects, including revamping the Lagos-Jebba line and Lagos-Maiduguri standard gauge, promise to drive drown transport costs and time. An ongoing initiative to connect the capital city of Abuja to Kaduna, the state capital of the northwestern Kaduna State, is slated for completion by early 2015. In July 2014, the Nigerian Government additionally attained 25 General Electric engines and refurbished 366 coaches and wagons.

The federal government's 25-year plan targets the country's economic revival—both in-country and across borders. As Vice President Namadi Sambo said at a press conference, "The execution requires resources... The federal government has articulated a broad platform to facilitate beneficial private sector participation... which will in turn boost foreign investment."

Through joined private and federal support, the Nigerian Government remains positioned to modernize Nigeria's rail transport, drive economic development, fuel job creation and speed up the transport of the country's goods and the nation's people.

Your Excellency, God Brought You Here and Not Good Luck

If I Were President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria

I will rather do a single term of four years and leave the state house a hero than do a second term that will worsen the predicaments of majority of Nigerians.

He should not gamble with his luck. God brought him here and not any good luck.
God has done His best for him by bringing him all the way from the village of Otuoke, Bayelsa State, when he even had no shoes to become deputy governor and then governor of Bayelsa State and miraculously lifted higher to become Vice President and then head of state and President of the most powerful black nation on earth within 15 years. The first time anyone has ever achieved these feats in the history of both ancient and modern Nigeria.
God has done the best for him. Anything else will be sheer greed for power and vanity.
