'The Artist' Tipped To Sweep the Oscars

Oscars Betting Suggests The Artist Will Sweep the Board, Report Sky Bet
LONDON, January 24, 2012/PRNewswire/ --
Leading online betting firm Sky Bet has unveiled its full list of Oscars betting [http://www.skybet.com/betting/tv-and-film-specials/oscars/t10003442.html ] markets following the announcement of the 84th Academy Awards nominations on Tuesday.
Black and white silent movie 'The Artist', which last week picked up the Producers Guild Award and also won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy/Musical, is Sky Bet [http://www.skybet.com ]'s clear favourite to win Best Picture at 2/7, with the odds having been cut from a pre-Christmas 2/1.
The French tribute to the silent movie has ten Oscar bids, although it was beaten by Scorsese's 3D charmer 'Hugo', which received 11 nods. This augurs well for its Best Picture hopes as the most nominated film has taken the top prize 15 times in the last 20 years and Sky Bet make 'Hugo' a 10/1 shot, behind Golden Globe Best Drama champion, 'The Descendants' (4/1).
'The Artist' dominates several other categories, with its helmsman Michel Hazanavicius odds-on favourite (8/13) to win Best Director and its leading man Jean Dujardin second in the Best Actor betting at 2/1. George Clooney is hot favourite at 2/5 to take home the lead actor gong for his performance in comedy-drama 'The Descendants'. Gary Oldman picked up his first ever Oscar nomination for 'Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy' and is quoted at 33/1.
Double Oscar winner and 17-time nominee, Meryl Streep, is the short-priced favourite at 1/2 to scoop a third gong for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady'. Viola Davis is her nearest rival for Best Actress at 9/4, with 'My Week with Marilyn' star, Michelle Williams, another threat at 11/4.
Sky Bet's Oscars betting expert, Helen Jacob, said: "The Artist seems way ahead of its rivals in the race to win the top Oscar.
"Other categories, however, are not so clean cut, with the battle for best actress between Meryl Streep and Viola Davis looking particularly close."
For Best Supporting Actor, Christopher Plummer ('Beginners') looks all but home and hosed at 1/12 and Octavia Spencer at 1/8 ('The Help') looks to have the Best Supporting Actress category sewn up.
Sky Bet is also offering a host of novelty special bets on the Oscars ceremony itself, which takes place at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, February 26th.
Veteran actress Meryl Streep accidentally swore onstage at the Globes and Sky Bet go 7/2 that the Oscars best actress winner turns the air blue again in her acceptance speech. It's even money that the best actress cries during her speech and 10/1 that any recipient's address consists of a single 'Thank you!'

Reporters Without Borders Condemns Boko Haram For Killing Enenche Godwin Akogwu
Enenche Godwin Akogwu of Channels Television was killed in the Boko Haram's attacks in Kano last Friday.

Nigeria / Targeted killing / TV reporter gunned down while covering Kano suicide bombings
PARIS, January 23, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Reporters Without Borders condemns TV reporter Enenche Godwin Akogwu's targeted murder while covering a series of deadly bombings by the militant Islamist sect Boko Haram on 20 January in the northern city of Kano, and urges the authorities to do everything possible to ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to justice.
“Akogwu's death is especially shocking as he was not one of the direct victims of the bombings but was gunned down shortly afterward while trying to cover them,” Reporters Without Borders said. “He is the second journalist to be killed by Boko Haram, following Zakariya Isa, who was shot outside his home in another northern city on 22 October 2011.
“As well as attacking federal government buildings or churches, as it did on Christmas Day, Boko Haram has shown a new side to its violence with this targeted killing; it has shown itself to be an enemy of the media and journalists as well. We firmly condemn Akogwu's murder, we offer our condolences to his family, colleagues and friends, and we urge the authorities to quickly adopt measures to protect reporters.”
Akogwu, 31, was the Kano correspondent of Channels TV. He was slain by an unidentified gunman while trying to interview victims outside Farm central police station on Justice Dahiru Musdapher Road, which was one of the targets of the suicide bombings.
Akogwu was from Aiodio, in the Otikpa district of Ogbadibo, in the southeastern state of Benue. After joining Channels TV in Abuja three years ago, he was sent to Kano. He had never been threatened and had just received an award from the station's chairman for the quality of his work. President Goodluck Jonathan, who has pledged to end Boko Haram's attacks, offered his condolences to Akogwu's family.
At least 166 people were killed in a total of about 20 explosions on 20 January at eight strategic locations in Kano, which included the police headquarters, an intelligence agency building, an immigration department building and the home of a senior police officer. The bombings were claimed by Boko Haram, which was almost certainly also responsible for Akogwu's murder.
Mysterious death
The body of radio journalist, Nansok Sallah, was found on 19 January in a stream under a bridge on the Zaramagada-Rayfield road, 200 metres from a military checkpoint, in Jos (the capital of the central state of Plateau), where he worked for Highland FM.
As nothing of value was taken from him, his colleagues fear that he was the victim of a targeted murder, but the cause of death and possible motive are still unknown. From the Langtang North area in Plateau state, Sallah had worked for Highland FM for three years and hosted a programme called Highland Profile. He had not received any threats.
Reporters Without Borders urges the authorities to carry out a thorough investigation and to do their utmost to shed light on Sallah's death.

Nigerian reporter murdered while covering bombings
NEW YORK, January 23, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- A television reporter covering the aftermath of coordinated terrorist attacks in northern Nigeria was gunned down this afternoon, according to local journalists and news reports.
Enenche Akogwu, 31, a reporter and video camera operator with independent broadcaster Channels TV, was shot by unidentified gunmen as he attempted to interview witnesses of a deadly terrorist attack in Kano, capital of Kano state, Channels TV regional news editor Bashir Adigun told CPJ. The journalist had just returned from a news conference organized by police after multiple suicide bombings targeted government buildings, Adigun said.
At least seven people were killed in the attacks, The Associated Press reported. The extremist Islamist group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for the bombings, according to news reports.
"We condemn the murder of Enenche Akogwu and extend our condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues," said CPJ Africa Advocacy Coordinator Mohamed Keita. "Nigerian authorities must spare no efforts in bringing his killers to justice."
Akogwu never reported receiving any threats, Adigun told CPJ. Channels TV described Akogwu on its website as "a resourceful and fearless reporter" who "covered the northern region uncovering breaking stories and events across the troubled northern region." The journalist had worked with the station since 2010.

Nigerian Journalist killed in Weekend Terrorist Attacks in Nigeria
Nigerian Journalist killed in Weekend Terrorist Attacks in Nigeria
Enenche Okogwu, a reporter with Channels TV was among over 180 people killed in the latest Boko Haram terrorist attacks last weekend in Kano, Nigeria’s second largest state in the predominantly Islamic northern region. He was on official assignment at the time of the most devastating Boko Haram onslaught since the horrifying Christmas Day attacks in the northern states of Niger, Plateau and Borno where dozens of people were killed and several others left with injuries in suicide bombings targeting the St. Theresa Catholic Church in Madalla, Niger State and other churches.
The serial attacks in Kano destroyed the Zone 1 headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force, a police post, a passport office of the Nigerian Immigrations and the overcrowded farm centre and Bompai axis of the busy metropolis. The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero wept as President Goodluck Jonathan came to commiserate with him over the harrowing incident after the Muslims Jumat prayers.
One of the scenes of the Kano bombings.
On Sunday the spokesman of Boko Haram, Abul Qaqa gave reasons why the sect went on rampage in Kano in a telephone interview with Nigerian journalists in Maiduguri.
"The message here is that everybody knows that a lot of our people were killed in Kano State, especially in Wudil town. We had perfected plans to take revenge but some notable scholars intervened by pleading with us.
"They also assured that our members would never be persecuted again and we took them by their words. Unfortunately, however, about five months ago, security agencies began trailing and arresting our members who are carrying out their legitimate businesses, alleging that they are all thieves and armed robbers.
"Again, we perfected plans to attack the city of Kano but the scholars pleaded that we should not. They advised that we should write a formal letter of complaint to some notable people. We agreed and sent letters to the Emir of Kano, Wamban Kano, Dan Masanin Kano and the governor of Kano State.
"We also posted the open letter on the internet, but nothing was done to stop the persecution of our members.
"Recently, security agencies launched a fresh onslaught on some of our members in Kano city in which even women and children were not spared. Many houses were raided and a pregnant woman was manhandled.
"Some of our members were tortured with electric shock. All these things happened in Kano, a city that we hold in high esteem.
"We have varied opinions about Kano, including the option of launching endless campaign of violence, but the scholars that have been talking to us are still persuading us to tarry a while.
"We are compelled to write this open letter so that the world will know what is happening.
There were other attacks reported in the northern state of Bauchi with about ten people killed

Ayew Brothers, Others United Against Malaria As African Cup of Nations Kick-Off
21 Jan 2012 09:00 Africa/Lagos
African Football Stars Including Gervinho, Ayew Brothers and Sow Commit to Malaria Fight Ahead of African Cup of Nations Kick-Off
MALABO, Equatorial Guinea, January 21, 2012/PRNewswire/ --
- Through new television public service announcements, stars deliver
life-saving messages to fans in malaria-endemic regions of Africa
As the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea prepares to kick off, some of football's biggest stars have been practicing more than just their moves on the football pitch; they've also been practicing delivering messages about malaria control. Andrew (Dede) Ayew, midfielder from Ghana, Gervinho, forward from Cote d'Ivoire, and Moussa Sow, forward from Senegal, were just a few of the tournament stars who delivered malaria prevention and treatment messages in new United Against Malaria (UAM) public service announcements (PSAs) that will air throughout Africa during the tournament.
Other UAM champions who lent their voice to the new PSAs include Jordan Ayew, striker from Ghana, Charles Kabore, midfielder from Burkina Faso, and Asamoah Gyan, striker from Ghana. The PSAs focus on the importance of malaria prevention and treatment for children in Africa, "because all children deserve a chance at greatness, just like their heroes on the football pitch." Although preventable and treatable, a child in Africa dies every 45 seconds from malaria.
"Malaria still kills many children in Africa, and it's important that we educate fans on how to protect themselves and their families," said Ghana Football Association President and CAF Executive Committee member Kwesi Nyantakyi, whose national team starred in a UAM PSA ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. "Until we have no children dying from malaria in Africa, we need to spread the word about ways to prevent and treat this disease."
The new PSAs will be shown at half-time during matches aired in Ghana, Senegal and many other African countries through local and cable television stations.
"We are so grateful to the players and their national associations for their commitment to the fight against malaria," said David Kyne, United Against Malaria Campaign Manager. "Their support offers us an unparalleled opportunity to reach millions of viewers watching the tournament to deliver messages about the prevention and treatment of malaria."
Private Sector Support
In addition to the PSAs, UAM private sector supporter, Marathon Oil, have continued to support malaria control in one of the tournament's host countries, Equatorial Guinea. During the Africa Cup of Nations they are sponsoring mass media projects that educate fans in country with prevention and treatment messages including a 2012 edition of the UAM GOAL! Magazine that includes photos and quotes from UAM champions.
The UAM campaign is also highlighting official sponsor of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, Standard Bank, and its successful implementation of the "Malaria Safe Playbook" with all employees in endemic malaria countries throughout Africa. The "Malaria Safe Playbook" is an interactive learning tool that Standard Bank has used to educate its global workforce and customers about malaria, after it previously distributed 11,000 ITNs to protect staff in 15 malaria-endemic markets and provided workers with UAM bracelets and educational materials to raise campaign visibility in their home countries.

About Malaria
Malaria is a disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. If left untreated, the infection in its most severe forms can lead to a coma and death. Malaria is preventable and treatable, but continues to kill a child every 45 seconds and nearly 800,000 people each year. Furthermore, malaria contributes to the cycle of poverty and limits economic development.
About United Against Malaria
United Against Malaria is a partnership of football teams and heroes, celebrities, health and advocacy organizations, governments, corporations, and individuals who have united to win the fight against malaria. Our goal is to galvanize partners throughout the world to reach the international target of reducing deaths to near zero by 2015. For more information please visit http://www.UnitedAgainstMalaria.org.
About 2012 Africa Cup of Nations
The Africa Cup of Nations is the continent's premier football championship, organized biannually by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The 2012 tournament of 16 teams, co-hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea from January 21 to February 12, will be followed by millions of fans in Africa and around the world.
