60 Years of TV in Nigeria and Tropical Africa: 1959-2019

60 YEARS OF TV IN NIGERIA AND TROPICAL AFRICA
October 1959- October 2019

This month of October will be 60 years of TV in Nigeria and Tropical Africa pioneered by the Western region of Nigeria led by the most visionary African political leader in the 20th century, the great sage, Chief Ọbáfẹ́mi Awólọ́wọ̀, GCFR (6 March 1909 – 9 May 1987), Nigerian nationalist; one of the founding fathers of modern Nigeria and first Premier of the Western Region.

Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) began broadcasting on 31 October 1959 under the name Western Nigerian Government Broadcasting Corporation (WNTV), with Olapade Obisesan as its first Chairman. It was based in Ibadan and was the first television station in tropical Africa.

Tunde Kelani and Prof. Wole Soyinka, first black Nobel laureate in Literature.

I have told the NTA to celebrate it with the classics of Nigerian TV since 1959 to 2019 and recognition of the outstanding pioneers like ace filmmaker, Tunde Kelani and veteran news anchor woman, Aunty Julie Cooker and colleagues. And lest we forget, to remember Ambassador Chief Segun Olusola, Uncle Ted Mukuro and others of blessed memory.

Chris Obi-Rapu on location.

How NTA Gave Birth To Nollywood:
The groundbreaking first international African blockbuster movie on home video, "Living in Bondage" part one in 1992 was directed by Chris Obi Rapu from NTA and the part two was directed by Christian Chika Onu also from NTA in 1993.
