Majority of Nigerian Government Workers Are Being Paid Salaries for Incompetence
Majority of Nigerian government workers are being paid salaries for incompetence.
Thousands of employees in government offices from the local government to the federal ministries are collecting monthly salaries with allowances and other benefits for being incompetent and inefficient.
The widespread rot in the civil service was caused by the collapse the Nigerian government when the former military Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon, retd; was toppled in a coup d'etat on July 29, 1975 and the best military administration in the political history of Nigeria was destroyed by the coup plotters who were clueless about the criteria for the establishment of a modern government administration. That was actually when the incorporation of corruption started in the civil service.
The public sector and private sector became partners in crime of widespread corrupt practises in the corridors of power.
Misappropriations of allocations of government revenues and also misappropriations of foreign aids became common practice. Government officials diverted public funds and shared kickbacks from contractors and millions of dollars and Euros of foreign aids have been misappropriated by Nigeria NGOs diverted to their private bank accounts to enrich themselves with handshakes of congratulations from bank managers and standing ovations in their clubs, churches and mosques for sharing their loot with them.
I recently informed the federal government office for climate change of over €7 million allocated by the EU for climate change projects in Nigeria in 2019, but the shutdown of the federal government during the 2019 general elections must have distracted the government administrators from the fund or most likely they wanted to wait for a new cabinet before going for the money which I am afraid may end up misappropriated by the old or new corrupt and incompetent political appointees.
