The Twisted War On Piracy of Nigerian Movies
The Twisted War On Piracy of Nigerian Movies
I have written comprehensive articles on movie piracy and focused on the piracy of Nigerian movies in "Nigeria: Nollywood and the Vicious Circle of Movie Piracy" published on Shadow and Act of the popular IndieWire.
Piracy of Nigerian movies is not as terrible as the piracy of American movies. According recent reports, last year 2016, in the United States alone, an estimated 981 million pirated movies and TV shows were downloaded. Billions of dollars are lost to pirates of movies every year.
Last week, the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) of Nigeria arrested some pirates at the Alaba International Market. But Nigerian entertainers and their families watching pirated copies of Tyler Perry's ‘If Loving You Is Wrong' and other series of foreign movies and music videos; illegally downloading and sharing foreign movies, music videos and TV series are as bad as the pirates of Nigerian movies.
You cannot be chasing pirates of #Nollywood movies at Alaba International Market on the outskirts of Lagos while your wives, children, friends and relations are illegally downloading, viewing and sharing movies, music videos and TV series from #Hollywood and #Bollywood.
Some local TV stations in Nigeria are showing pirated foreign programmes on their channels, because they never bought the foreign movies and TV shows or acquired them from the authorised distributors.
What goes around comes around.
Comprehendo?
If the law enforcement agencies in Nigeria want to combat and stop piracy of movies, they must start from the street first before the market and then on the internet.
You cannot raid pirates at Alabama International Market, and ignore the vendors on the street who sell to millions of consumers.
