Video: Boko Haram Forced One Million Children Out of School in Nigeria – UNICEF

Nigeria's Boko Haram insurgency forces one million children from school – UNICEF

NEW YORK, 22 December 2015 / PRN Africa / -- Violence and attacks against civilian populations in northeastern Nigeria and its neighbouring countries have forced “a staggering” one million children out of school in a conflict that has dealt “a huge blow for education in the region,” the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) reported today.

Girls use their new school supplies during a class in an informal learning centre in a UNICEF-supported safe space for children in the Dalori camp for internally displaced people, in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri in Borno State. Photo: UNICEF/UNI193691/Andrew Esiebo.

“Across Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger, over 2,000 schools remain closed due to the conflict – some of them for more than a year – and hundreds have been attacked, looted or set on fire,” UNICEF said. “In far north Cameroon, only one out of the 135 schools closed in 2014 has re-opened this year.”

UNICEF also reported that the number of children missing out on their education due to the conflict adds to the estimated 11 million children of primary school age who were already out of school in the four countries before the onset of the crisis.

“It's a staggering number,” said Manuel Fontaine, UNICEF's West and Central Africa Regional Director.

“The conflict has been a huge blow for education in the region, and violence has kept many children out of the classroom for more than a year, putting them at risk of dropping out of school altogether,” added Mr. Fontaine.

In addition, Nigeria alone, approximately 600 teachers have been killed since the start of the Boko Haram insurgency.

UNICEF said it has supported 170,000 children back into education in the safer areas of the three states most in Nigeria affected by the conflict, where the majority of schools have been able to re-open.

“The challenge we face is to keep children safe without interrupting their schooling,” said Mr. Fontaine. “Schools have been targets of attack, so children are scared to go back to the classroom; yet the longer they stay out of school, the greater the risks of being abused, abducted and recruited by armed groups,” he explained.

So far, UNICEF has received 44 per cent of the funding required in 2015 to respond to the humanitarian needs of children in Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon and Chad.

And in 2016, UNICEF will need nearly $23 million to provide access to education for children affected by conflicts in the four countries, most of whom live around the Lake Chad region.

Apple Paid $13.97 Billion in Income Taxes in 2014

Apple Paid $13.97 Billion in Income Taxes More than What IBM, Microsoft and Google combined in 2014.

How Much U.S. Tech Companies Pay in Taxes

Large tech companies such as Apple and Google are often accused of avoiding U.S. taxes by stashing foreign earnings in countries with lower corporate tax rates. When asked about his company’s tax avoidance practices in an interview with “60 Minutes”, Apple’s CEO Tim Cook rebutted the allegations saying that Apple pays “every tax dollar it owes”. He also criticized the U.S. tax code for being outdated in the digital age and claimed that Apple pays more taxes than any other company.

While that may be true in total terms, it definitely isn't in relation to the company's outlandish profits. In 2014, Apple paid $13.97 billion in income taxes, which is more than what IBM, Microsoft and Google paid combined. More importantly though, Apple’s effective tax rate (the average rate at which pre-tax profits are taxed) in 2014 was 26.1%. While that is actually higher than it is for many of its fellow tech companies, it is 2.5 percentage points below the average tax rate paid by S&P 100 companies in 2014, not to mention the statutory federal income tax rate of 35%.

As our chart illustrates, Apple is far from alone in trying to pay as little taxes as possible. As a matter of fact, it is paying higher taxes than many of its peers.

10 Questions Dominating Boardroom Agendas for 2016

10 Questions Dominating Boardroom Agendas for 2016

NEW YORK, Dec. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- "Boardrooms are facing great unpredictability and a breakdown of business models in their industries, which changes the role of directors today," says Susan Stautberg, CEO of the WomenCorporateDirectors Foundation, the largest group of women corporate board members globally. "We need directors who are synthesizers of information – who can see the smoke over the horizon and bring this insight into their companies."

What are the top questions directors are asking in their boardrooms so that they can be better prepared for what's to come? WCD held its Americas Institute this fall, where directors came from across the globe to The Coca-Cola Company's headquarters in Atlanta to discuss top board concerns and how directors are preparing themselves for the challenges of 2016 and beyond:
10 Questions Dominating Boardroom Agendas for 2016
  1. Is the board truly thinking globally? "Many of our companies have global footprints and distribute global products, and yet, I dare say, are not what I would call a global company with a global DNA," said Elaine La Roche, Director of Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc., China Construction Bank, and Harsco Corporation; and Senior Advisor, China International Capital Corporation. "The population of the world is going from 7.3 billion today to add almost another billion by 2025. Yes, the demographic growth is going to be coming from China, but also from India, from Indonesia, and from Africa. How many of you have had a conversation about those countries in your boardroom recently?"

  2. How can companies leverage "glocalization"? "You can't reach many local markets around the world if you don't produce innovation locally," said Adriana Machado, formerly the Latin America Government Affairs and Policy Vice President at General Electric. "Companies can then employ 'reverse innovation' and find opportunities to create a product in a less developed country, and then take it globally afterward." Companies such as GE are some of the leaders making the models of glocalization and reverse innovation co-exist, bringing products tailored to emerging markets – such as portable medical devices – and selling them in wealthy countries.

  3. Who's accountable for the company's cybersecurity? "Organizations are still lacking in cybersecurity preparation," said Olga Botero, Founder and Managing Director of C&S Customers and Strategy, Senior Advisor at Boston Consulting Group, and Director of Evertec, Inc. "True cybersecurity is based on accountability for each person in an organization. It doesn't matter whether it's someone in sales or the production area or whether it's someone in management – security is everyone's responsibility, and if you don't have a very strong culture within companies, we have open windows." Boards are responsible for creating the conditions upon which a culture of preparedness and accountability can be built.

  4. Where is the data risk in the organization? "I think the biggest thing to remember is that data risk isn't just about IT or those involved in the security area," said Kathy Misunas, Director, Tech Data Corporation. "This is about every employee thinking about security – it's not just about those handling customer data, Social Security numbers, and credit card numbers. Consider employees in areas such as M&A and investor relations since there may be sensitive data and risk imbedded in these parts of the organization. I believe that many companies are looking at security through a narrower lens than is required."

  5. What is included in the company's innovation "ecosystem"? "The board should be looking at a company and asking itself: are initiatives praised, are they celebrated? Are failures embraced?" said Giannella Alvarez, Chief Executive Officer, Harmless Harvest, and Director, Domtar Corporation. "Is the innovation ecosystem comprised of internal and external stakeholders? Do we involve our employees in innovation? Do we involve our suppliers? Do we involve academia? Do we involve start-ups?" Innovation is an open system, more and more so, and boards can help open these doors.

  6. What new business model should the company be thinking about? "Innovating isn't always about new technology; it's often about business model innovation," said Teresa Amabile, Professor & Director of Research, Harvard Business School, and Director, Seaman Corporation. "Think about Uber: Uber didn't invent cars. Uber didn't invent the idea of a stranger giving a ride to someone else – that's been around as long as there've been liveries and taxis. But Uber invented a new business model for doing that. FedEx didn't invent package delivery, but it invented this crazy new business model for doing that." Boards need to be aware that the culture is what will make the company open to new business models. "Peter Drucker is said to have quipped, 'culture eats strategy for breakfast,'" said Amabile. "You can have the best strategy around, but if you don't have the appropriate culture within your company to execute it, it will fail."

  7. How does a board balance innovation and risk? "Boards must look short-, medium-, and long-term: what is our role in thinking about innovation?" said Anne Darche, Owner of Pertinence and Director, Groupe St-Hubert, Groupe Germain Hรดtels, and MU. "Boards have to look at a balanced innovation portfolio from a risk perspective. You do need incremental innovations, where you're basically tweaking products that exist already – maybe it's a second generation or third generation of products. These are lower risk, lower return, but you need those. Then you also need the more disruptive innovations: those with longer return and higher risks, but will be the ones to bring you to the future. These are the innovations that guarantee that you will be here 15 years, 20 years from now."

  8. Where should the board spend its time? "One of the problems is that we're spending too much of our time on the past and not enough on the future," said Donna McManmon, Regional Sales Director at Diligent Corporation, which creates collaborative software for boardrooms. "We spend a whole lot of time on quarterly reports, audit reviews, and budget compliance, and not enough on strategy, risks, trends, disruption, R&D, and innovations. As it's said, a good board brings oversight and insight, but a great board also brings foresight."

  9. How will we manage shareholders? Shareholders are forcing boards to up their communications game, both ways. "Sound pay practices were one of the issues that started this stronger voice from shareholders, but it was really just a Trojan horse," said Maria Elena (Mel) Lagomasino, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Partner, WE Family Offices and Director of The Walt Disney Company, The Coca-Cola Company, and Avon Products, Inc. "There is now a whole process where shareholders want more and more communication about everything, and boards are becoming much better listeners. Boards will need antennae to be able to really listen to what's going on with shareholders."

  10. How can a board bring the right voices to the table? "People who all think alike might not ask questions of each other and may not probe," said Helene D. Gayle, MD, MPH, Chief Executive Officer, McKinsey Social Initiative; Director, The Coca-Cola Company and Colgate-Palmolive Company. "I think the fact that we're all taking our responsibility more seriously, and that we're scrutinized more, opens up the opportunity to also have a greater number of different voices at the table. Not only women's voices, but diversity across all backgrounds and demographic factors."
"A great director at the right place, at the appropriate time, can save a company going through disruption," says Stautberg.

Nancy Calderon – KPMG Global Lead Partner and Director of WCD and KPMG India's Global Delivery Center, Ltd. – echoes this: "The best directors can navigate all these disruptive forces, and at the same time help their own companies disrupt boardroom thinking enough to ensure their companies have a future."

More Than 16 Million Babies Were Born in Conflict Zones in 2015

Conflicts across the globe continue to put babies and children in grave danger

TORONTO, Dec. 17, 2015 /CNW/ - More than 16 million babies were born in conflict zones in 2015 – one in eight of all births worldwide this year – UNICEF said today, a figure that underscores the vulnerability faced by an increasing number of children.

On November 28, Nour Majati cradles her one-month-old son, Youssef, in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, on the Serbian border. Mrs. Majati, her husband and their four children fled Aleppo, Syria, following bombing attacks on their home.

"Every two seconds, a newborn takes its first breath in the midst of conflict, often in terrifying circumstances and without access to medical care," said UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake. "Too many children are now starting their lives in extreme circumstances – from conflict to natural disasters, poverty, disease or malnutrition. Can there be a worse start in life?"

"In conflict-affected countries such as Afghanistan, the Central African Republic, Iraq, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen, or on perilous journeys to escape fighting, newborn children and their mothers face enormous risks," said David Morley, UNICEF Canada President and CEO. "Canada has been a global champion for maternal, newborn and child health and for the education and protection of children in emergencies. Investments in 2016 will be critical to efforts to save the lives of the most vulnerable caught in these devastating conflicts."

Pregnant mothers are in danger of giving birth without medical help and in unsanitary conditions. Their children are more likely to die before they reach their fifth birthdays and to experience extreme – or "toxic" – stress, which can inhibit their long-term emotional and cognitive development.
In addition to those born into conflict, more than a quarter of a billion children – or one in nine – live in countries and areas in conflict and face enormous obstacles to their health, education and well-being.
  • More than 200,000 children applied for asylum in European Union countries in the first nine months of 2015, adding to the 30 million children across the globe forced from their homes by 2014 due to war, violence and persecution. More people are displaced now than at any time since World War II.
  • In South Sudan, up to 16,000 children are being used by armed groups and armed forces and 1,500 children have been killed in nearly two years of conflict.
  • The escalation of the conflict in Yemen has placed 9.9 million children in need of humanitarian assistance. Two million children cannot go to school and the threat of preventable diseases like diarrhea, measles and Polio are acute. Also, the number of children at risk for the deadliest form of malnutrition has tripled to more than half a million.
  • In the Central African Republic, more than one million children are in urgent need of assistance after three years of fighting. Around one third of the population has no access to safe drinking water and 41 per cent of children under five are chronically malnourished. But there is hope and UNICEF is making a difference. So far in 2015, more than 300 children, including several under 12 years old, have been released from armed groups in the country following a UNICEF-facilitated agreement by the groups' leaders to free all children in their ranks - the start of a process that we hope will result in the release of thousands of children associated with armed groups.
  • The violence in north-eastern Nigeria, caused by insurgent groups, has led to a humanitarian crisis stretching from Nigeria to Cameroon, Chad and Niger. A sharp increase in attacks by the armed group commonly known as Boko Haram has uprooted over 500,000 children over the past months, bringing the total number of children on the run in northeast Nigeria and neighbouring countries to 1.4 million. Scores of girls and boys have been recruited by armed groups or subjected to violence, exploitation and abuse, and countless have been killed.

Put Your Music Videos and Movies on Ericsson's NuVu

Ericsson is partnering with mobile service providers to deliver NuVu content as a Value Added Service to mobile operators. In Nigeria, Ericsson is deploying NuVu in partnership with Airtel as discussions with Kenyan operators are in progress. It is expected Kenya will be the second country to deploy the service in 2016.
Robert Rudin, Country Manager, Ericsson Kenya says the streaming service will provide over 3,000 international and local shows and videos for as little as $5 per month ‘all you can eat plan’ or $2 per week for selected content.

“Content downloaded via NuVu will be secure as the platform offers Digital Rights Management. This protects content from piracy, an important consideration especially for content producers,” says Rudin.

The service enables subscribers to download content to their mobile devices at no additional cost by using off peak network hours and has been optimized to be light on battery usage on smartphones.

Alma Mater Honours AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina

Alma Mater Honours AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina

ABIDJAN, Cรดte d'Ivoire, 15 December 2015 / PRN Africa / -- The President of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina, has received an Honorary Doctorate Degree (Doctor of Science, Honoris Causa) from his Alma Mater, Obafemi Awolowe University, in Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Speaking at the ceremony on Saturday, December 12, the Vice Chancellor of the University extolled the virtues and achievements of President Adesina, adding that he is a son of the soil that has earned not only the award, but also the respect of all present.

While accepting the award, President Adesina urged the 2015 graduating class to ensure that integrity, humility and service to others remain their watchwords in all aspects of life. “As you move up in life, remember everyone that sacrificed to make it possible. Honour your parents for you will never get new ones, and give back to community. Every step you take higher, should bring your head closer to the ground,” he enthused. The President reminisced on his foundation years up to his graduation in 1981.

Courtesy visit to Governor of Osun State

While in Nigeria, President Akinwumi paid a courtesy call on the Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola, and held discussions on the challenges of development in the state. Governor Aregbesola asked Adesina for advice on state initiatives that have not fully delivered on their promise. These include harnessing the immense potential of youth in agriculture. “Unless our young people are drawn to the farms, we are lost,” he said.

Responding to the Governor's remarks, the AfDB President suggested sustainable solutions such as engaging in Public Private Partnerships to finance agriculture, tapping into the Agricultural Equipment Hiring Enterprise to ensure access to modern farming tools, and also investing heavily in energy. He emphasized that the establishment of hydro stations and a state agency for electricity would ensure sustainable change in the development of the state. The Bank President advised the state to form industrial clusters after conducting analysis of the various crops grown in the different regions within the state.
