His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR. President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria is the Special Guest of Honour at the National Security Summit (#NSS2015_NG) on "Community Partnership Approach to Internal Security and Crime Management."
This press briefing is called as a platform to acquaint citizens and residents alike of the preparedness of the Nigeria Police Force to hold a National Security Summit, with the theme “Community partnership approach to internal security and crime management”. This epoch making event is billed to take place on Monday 17th August, 2015 at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Evidence from Police records indicate that the nation is plagued by crimes such as terrorism, kidnapping, murder, cattle rustling, cultism, rape, land grabbing, violence against children and women, bribery and corruption etc. All of these vices impact negatively on our national wealth and development.

The National Security Summit is an avenue for an all inclusive deliberation on all issues of security concerns. As you are well aware, crime does not occur in a vacuum, but rather in communities. Also crime is perpetuated by humans who live in communities and some persons involved in crime are known to members of the same communities.

The National Security Summit, 2015 (NSS 2015) will have as its special guest of honour, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Federal Republic of Nigeria. The key note address will be delivered by his Eminence, Sa’ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto.

OBJECTIVES
National Security Summit 2015 is envisaged within the broader framework of dialogue with the communities consequent upon the belief that security is a shared responsibility and the business of policing is the responsibility of all, and addressing our current National Security challenges requires a strong synergy between security agencies and relevant security stakeholders. The Summit is therefore, designed to galvanize citizens support for the Nigeria Police and other law enforcement agents in the renewed drive by the president, to addressing current national Security challenges.

Being a noble idea of IGP Solomon E. Arase led Nigeria Police Force, the Summit among others is aimed at achieving the following objectives:
I. Enlighten strategic security stakeholders and citizens at the grassroots level of their invaluable roles in the national security architecture of the country. This is with a view to engendering the spirit of security consciousness among all citizens, especially in the face of current national security challenges;

II. Create a veritable platform that will encourage the spirit of community engagement in policing, and strengthen the synergy between law enforcement Agencies and the diverse communities in Nigeria towards crime and national security management;
III. Tap into and optimally maximize the value of citizens as indispensable intelligence assets that could be engaged to attain the intelligence-led policing vision of the Force leadership.

The overriding motivation for the summit is the appreciation of the fact that there is an urgent need to bridge the gap between the police and the community in order to restore public trust that will motivate citizens to see crime and national security management as a joint obligation of the citizens, the community and the state.

To this end therefore, over 400 participants who are considered as strategic security stakeholders drawn from a broad spectrum of the Nigeria society are being expected at this summit. The list cuts across traditional rulers, in all the 36 states of the Federation and FCT, relevant community based organizations, civil societies organizations, the media, youth/student associations, organized vigilante groups, religious and corporate bodies, Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), as well as security and law enforcement agencies.

It is hoped that the outcome of this all inclusive interactive forum which is a new approach to addressing National Security challenges will not only strengthen national security, but also re-energize the NPF leadership towards the realization of our core policing mandate.
