Nigerian Movies Will Boost Africa's Projected 5.2 Percent GDP Growth in 2013
Euromonitor International and Reed Exhibitions, organizers of the World Travel Market, in a report last November said that Africa's projected 5.2 percent GDP growth in 2013 would be due in part to the popularity of Nigerian films, which it said would also attract domestic and regional tourism. ~ http://in.finance.yahoo.com/news/india-help-build-film-city-093905381.html

Indian Investment in Nigerian Film to Aid Development

  ~ By Julie Fuller

The Kano State in Nigeria is to get a new “film city” as part of an ongoing development project with India. Like India, Nigeria has enjoyed a booming film industry, and it is hoped that developing this sector will help to bring vital income to the country. It is anticipated that the creation of the film city will bring thousands of jobs to the Nigerian population. It is also hoped that by capitalizing on the country’s popular ‘Nollywood’ industry, this will create another strong foreign export to run alongside the country’s already lucrative oil and gas industry. In order to achieve this ambitious aim, Nigeria is looking to India. The Asian country has for decades enjoyed the global success of Bollywood, the industry having created many internationally renowned film stars, and having generated a huge amount of revenue for the country. One organization that is aware of Bollywood’s success is the EXIM Bank of India, which has financed the industry for many years. The EXIM Bank of India has been working with its Nigerian counterpart, the NEXIM, to develop a similar strategy for Nollywood and to provide ongoing advice and support.

Historical connection
Film is big business in Nigeria; there are now between 1,000 and 1,200 movies made every year through Nollywood. The industry began in 1992, with a release called ‘Living in Bondage’, which sold more than half a million copies. At the time, movies were made on VHS format, but now the industry has modernized to digital. Nollywood now actually produces more movies than Hollywood, and is second only to Bollywood in terms of quantity. As the industry matures, it is now looking to acquire new international markets. Nigeria’s connection with India’s film industry dates back more than 50 years, when distributors from Lebanon started importing Indian films to Nigeria back in the 1950s. Since then, many Nigerians have grown up watching Bollywood films, hence the creation of Nollywood several decades later, which takes many influences from its Asian counterpart.

Helping Nigerian youth through film
The partnership between the two countries is aiming to improve development in Nigeria in areas such as health, education and employment. Africa, which has the fastest growing and youngest population in the world, is under increasing pressure from international governments to improve its prospects for citizens. The film industry is being highlighted as one of the Nigeria's booming sectors, and one that has the potential to bring vital funds to the country that will aid its development. Not only will the project create a large number of jobs, but the income generated by the film city will go towards the creation of new state of the art health centers and live-in treatment clinics for those getting over addiction and other health-related conditions. Nigeria has recorded a steep rise in the number of young people battling some form of drug addiction in recent years; earlier this year it was reported that drastic action needed to be taken to help vulnerable people rehabilitate back into society before their conditions lead to anti-social behaviour. Projects such as the film city, and partnerships with countries like India, will help to bring vital funds to tackle these problems, as well as giving Nigeria’s youth better prospects for both employment and entertainment.

 International investment in entertainment
In addition to Nigeria’s project with India, the World Bank has also recognized an international potential and appeal in Nigeria’s film industry. It is therefore helping the Nigerian government in creating the ‘Growth and Employment in States’ project. This project will provide finance and support to the country’s entertainment industry and – according to the World Bank – this could create up to one million jobs in the country’s film industry if managed properly. Roberts Orya, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Export Import Bank (NEXIM) said: “The Nigerian film industry has stunned the global movie world through its innovation, imaginativeness and prolific performance.” Orya’s sentiments are backed up by figures; the industry has brought in revenues of between $300 million and £800 million in the past few years alone. Although its income is not yet on the same level as that of Hollywood or Bollywood, the international film industry recognizes that it could well have the potential to match these global heavyweights in future years.

IMAX, Wanda And AMC Theatres Significantly Expand Worldwide Partnership Deals with Wanda and AMC Include Minimum of 40 and up to 120 New IMAX® Theatres Across China and U.S.

Wanda and AMC Extend IMAX Lease Terms

NEW YORK and BEIJING, July 24, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX; TSX:IMX) and Wanda Cinema Line Corporation, Asia's largest cinema owner, today announced an amendment to the parties' original 2011 joint revenue share agreement with the addition of a minimum of 40 and up to 120 new IMAX® theatres to be located throughout China. The deal also extends Wanda's lease terms for all new theatres to 12 years from 10 years and brings Wanda's total IMAX commitment in China to up to 210 theaters, positioning Wanda Cinema Line as IMAX's largest international exhibition partner.

In addition, IMAX and AMC Theatres, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wanda Group, signed an agreement to extend AMC's lease terms for all new and existing theatres to 13 years from 10 years and install a minimum of five and up to 10 new IMAX theatres in the U.S. Today's agreement brings AMC's total IMAX commitment to up to 152 theatres, making them the largest IMAX exhibition partner in North America.

"We have developed great partnerships with Wanda and AMC during the last decade and we're excited that the combination of two of our strongest partners has allowed us to advance our relationships to the next level," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "The Wanda and AMC IMAX network continues to flourish and today's agreement underscores their ongoing confidence in IMAX to strengthen their businesses by delivering to audiences the industry's best cinematic experience.

" Wanda Cinema Line was one of IMAX's first exhibition partners in China, opening a theatre in Dongguan in 2007. Building on the success of its existing IMAX theatres, the parties signed a 75-theatre joint venture agreement in 2011 that represented IMAX's first full revenue-sharing deal in China. In 2012, Wanda Group acquired AMC Theatres, IMAX's first and largest North American commercial exhibition partner, creating the world's largest cinema owner as well as the largest operator of IMAX theatres.

"Our IMAX theatres have been showing strong performance while Wanda Cinema Line is constantly developing. We're delighted to build on our successful partnership that continues to differentiate our cineplex by offering a premium entertainment experience," said Jerry Ye, Vice President of Wanda Cultural Group, a subsidiary of Wanda Group. "Week after week, AMC guests are choosing to see their Hollywood blockbusters in an IMAX auditorium," said Gerry Lopez, CEO and President of AMC. "As AMC continues to deliver the premiere experience in moviegoing, expanding our partnership with IMAX fits in perfectly with our strategy to provide the best options to even more of our guests."

"Wanda and AMC are two of the best IMAX theatre operators in the world," said Gelfond.
"Their commitment to quality, innovation and building the IMAX brand means that we're not just adding more theatres, we're delivering IMAX audiences top-notch theatres with strong operations that help to differentiate The IMAX Experience®."

Under the terms of the agreement with Wanda Cinema Line, 80 of the potential 120 IMAX theatres are predicated on the successful development of IMAX's next-generation laser projection system. Upon Wanda Cinema Line's commitment to the 80 additional IMAX theatres, the lease terms for all Wanda IMAX theatres – including their existing theatres – will convert to 12 years. In addition, they may elect to install IMAX's laser projection in a portion of all Wanda IMAX theatres, making them the first exhibitor to bring IMAX's groundbreaking laser technology to Asia. With today's agreement, there are now up to 381 IMAX theatres open or contracted to open in China.

IMAX Gives the Best Cinematic Experience

IMAX (IMAX) has started covering theater installation costs in exchange for a share of box-office revenues at multiplexes, where IMAX screens can generate three to four times the revenue of regular screens.

"They clearly deliver the best cinematic experience," says J.P. Morgan Securities analyst Townsend Buckles.

IMAX's fastest-growing market. "Spending a few extra renminbi on something special is within the reach of the emerging Chinese middle class," says CEO Rich Gelfond. However, IMAX faces currency fluctuations and political risk in markets like China where the government has historically favored domestic films over Western imports. "China is a big part of their story, and risks come with that," says Aravinda Galappatthige, an equity analyst at Canaccord Genuity.

“The IMAX frame, I think, is really the best way to see a movie.” – JJ Abrams, Producer, Screenwriter, Director

. In 2012 global film was a $34.7 billion market, growing by 6% over the 2011 levels. 37% of the growth in global box office totals came from China, which recently passed Japan as the second largest global markets. This is significant insofar as IMAX is concerned, for China allows advantageous terms for IMAX compared to the typical Hollywood film export arrangement. Assuming IMAX can capture just 3.5% of the global cinema market (in 2012 the company grossed just 0.45% of the global box office, double its prior year level), using the consensus estimate for 2013 revenues, 16% TTM ROE, 21% projected franchise ROE (we think this is very conservative), we get a derived P/E for IMAX of 46 on 2013’s analyst consensus $1 of earnings per share, or a price of $46.00.

The IMAX Experience

As soon as you walk into an IMAX theater, the difference in this format is immediately obvious -- the screen is gigantic! There are two different types:

  • IMAX theaters - A standard IMAX theater has a huge rectangular screen. A typical IMAX screen is 16 meters high by 22 meters wide (approximately 52 by 72 feet), but they can be much larger. The largest IMAX screen is 30 meters (98 feet) high. Imagine standing next to an eight-story apartment building that is wider than it is tall. That's how big the screen is! It is many times larger than the screen at a normal movie theater.
  • IMAX domes - An IMAX dome provides a hemispherical screen that wraps the entire theater. Domes can be up to 30 meters in diameter.

Whether you are in a theater or a dome, the effect is amazing. The screen is large enough to fill your field of vision. By doing this, the screen gives you an incredible feeling of immersion (there is nothing outside the film to distract your attention), and it also enhances the feeling of motion. In fact, the feeling of motion is so strong that it makes some people ill.
In order to fill this gigantic screen with a clear picture, IMAX films are shot and printed on huge film stock that is completely unique in the industry.

IMAX film stock is about 10 times larger than 35mm film stock.
Most films that you see in a theater come in a 35-millimeter format. The frame is 35 millimeters wide, and nearly square. But movie screens are not square -- they are very wide for their height. So the wide image is compressed into the 35-millimeter frame and expanded by the projector to fill the screen.
Some theater films come in a 70-millimeter format. This format provides roughly double the resolution, and the frame is naturally the width of the screen so there is no compression.
IMAX film is called the 15/70 film format. Each frame is 70 millimeters high and 15 perforations wide. In other words, the film size is about 10 times bigger than standard 35-millimeter film. This film size gives an IMAX movie incredible clarity, even on the huge screens in IMAX theaters.
The 15/70 film size makes an IMAX projector a truly unique device. If you have read How Movie Projectors Work, you understand the basic mechanism of a 35mm projector:

  • The film feeds in from the top of the projector.
  • A claw or sprocket arrangement advances the film one frame and holds it steady in front of the light.
  • A shutter opens and lets light shine through the film and lens onto the screen for a fraction of a second.
  •
In an IMAX projector, the film is so heavy and large that a projector cannot use a claw to move it, and it is hard to hold such a big film frame perfectly flat with respect to the lens. Therefore, an IMAX projector is completely different from a normal projector:

  • The film moves through it horizontally rather than vertically.
  • A vacuum system sucks each image onto a piece of glass in front of the lens so that the image is oriented perfectly in front of the lens.
  • The shutter opens for a longer period of time than on a normal projector in order to let more light through. The bulb for the projector is a 15,000-watt, water-cooled xenon unit.
  •
All of this advanced technology means that an IMAX projector weighs over 2 tons (1,800 kilograms) -- the equivalent of a small car! That's what it takes to get such a bright, clear image onto such a tremendous screen.

Half of a Yellow Sun is A Must See Movie On the Nigerian Civil War

No, these are not scenes from Terry George's Hotel Rwanda and of course Chiwetel Ejiofor is not Donald Frank "Don" Cheadle, Jr. These are gripping melodramatic scenes from the Nigerian-British film adaptation of Half of A Yellow Sun, the thrilling award winning novel on the ill-fated Igbos Republic of Biafra by the young and successful Nigerian Igbo novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

The movie has a well chosen cast of British and Nigerian actors, including leading roles by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Thandie Newton and other notable actors in the movie include Anika Noni Rose, John Boyega, Joseph Mawle and famous Nollywood star Genevieve Nnaji who ironically played a minor role as a Yoruba woman and not her native Igbo which would have been more appreciated by millions of her fellow Igbos in Nigeria and the Diaspora.

This is the baptism of fire in directing for popular British Nigerian writer Biyi Bandele who also wrote the screenplay for this Nigerian civil war drama about the lives of four people in Biafra. No one has dared to make such a film since the end of the internecine civil war over 40 years ago. A catastrophe that claimed more lives than the Rwandan Genocide of 1994, because 1–3 million people died in Biafra compared to the less than 1 million people who died in the Rwandan war. Co-produced by Scottish producer Andrea Calderwood of Slate Films, who is best known for her Bafta and Academy Award winning The Last King Of Scotland, and Gail Egan of Potboiler Productions, best known for producing The Constant Gardner and Vera Drake. The World Premiere will be at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Muslims in Syrian Civil War Have Killed More Muslims Than All Jihads

With over 100, 000 people killed so far within two years and majority of them were Muslims killed by fellow Muslims in the Syrian civil war, this is the worst internal conflict among Muslims in the history of Islam.
The war began on 15 March 2011 between forces loyal to the Syrian Ba'ath Party government and the rebels.
It is worse than the Battle of Jamal at Basra, Iraq in 656 between forces allied to Ali ibn Abi Talib (Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law, Commander of the Faithful) and forces allied to Aisha (widow of Muhammad, and Mother of the Believers (Arabic: Umm-al-Mu'mineen), who wanted justice on the perpetrators of the assassination of the previous caliph, Uthman.
10,000 people lost their life in this battle in less than a year. And this was the worst since Islam was founded.

See Mustafa Akyol's "The Islamic Roots of Democratic Rebellion and Liberty" on http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mustafa-akyol/islamic-roots-democracy_b_938560.html

War is the worst thing known to mankind

War is the worst thing known to mankind throughout his long history. It brings about the killing and maiming of human beings, the loss of their powers and their disfigurement. It also causes the destruction of civilisation and stirs up hatreds and resentments amongst people and passes psychological problems on to future generations. It also causes the fighters to become prisoners of war. For these reasons, war must be avoided at all costs and if war becomes necessary – because the enemy has forced the situation – it is imperative that war should be limited to the least degree of necessity. It is also imperative that humanity in general put an end to wars finally so that they do not occur in the future.

The Prophet (s) used to strive to keep the amount of killing and prisoners in his wars to a bare minimum in a way that the world has not witnessed either prior to or after the advent of Islam. For example, one writer mentions that the number of people killed on both sides (Muslims and Polytheists) in all the battles in which the Prophet fought did not exceed much more than one thousand and this in more than eighty wars. Another mentions that the number killed in all the wars was 1018 people. A third mentions that the number of Infidels and Muslims killed in all the wars was no more than 1400 this being the largest number mentioned in this regard. Dr. Muhammad Hamidullah in his book ‘Muhammad' mentions that the Prophet Muhammad (s), although he gained control of more than one million square miles of territory which is equal to all of Europe excluding Russia, and although millions of people lived in this area, only one-hundred and fifty Muslims were killed in all of his wars. He adds that this number amounts to approximately one death per month. This is only due to the respect that Islam has for blood and its avoidance of killing wherever possible.

Any Muslim that attacks and kills a fellow Muslim if not in self defence is not a Muslim, but a devil.

Nigeria is Now An Intellectually Bankrupt Nation

The Nigeria of today is not the Nigerian dream of the founding fathers of our great nation.

 Lawmakers or lawbreakers?

Nigeria is now an intellectually bankrupt nation populated by the most intellectually retarded people since 1960 to date and that is why 78 per cent of Nigerian children in their locality are out of school during school hours each with the country having the highest number of children out of school in the world.
Only children of retarded parents are out of school, because no educated parent will deprive his or her child good education.
The grave consequences of this predicament are socioeconomic and sociopolitical catastrophe and the current conflicts in the north will be insignificant when the time bomb explodes before our very eyes.

Majority of Nigerian parents have failed.
Especially the majority breeding like rabbits without intelligence and later they abandon the future of their unfortunate kids to fate.
These are millions of innocent kids who never asked to be born into a precarious life of retarded parents.
I have seen better parenting among sheep than among many Nigerian parents. They have lost their compass of morality.

The religions have failed.
The churches have failed and we can no longer separate the goats and the sheep.
The mosques have failed, since Muslims are now fighting and killing themselves even during the Ramadan.
They have lost their sanctity.

The schools have failed.
Minister of Education, Ruqayyatu Rufai, brought the situation into a sharper focus when she admitted that there were a total of 207, 813 unqualified teachers spread across the 36 states of the federation. She went on to explain that the North-West geopolitical zone had 46.8 per cent of the unqualified teachers, while the North-East had 57.7 per cent; North-Central 38 per cent; South-East 16.7 per cent; South-South 19.2 per cent; and South-West 6.7 per cent. And yet many private schools are springing up daily like mushrooms among weeds and deceiving ignorant and retarded parents to send their innocent children to them, but they don't have qualified teachers, because they cannot afford academically certified teachers.
That is why millions of school leavers and graduates of tertiary institutions are jobless and majority of the jobless are too clueless to create "too legit to quit" jobs for themselves.
They are all waiting for salary jobs that can never be enough for even the most qualified among the millions of jobless and clueless youths roaming the streets. And they are so self-destructive in their lifestyles without any noteworthy ambition.

You can throw them into two categories. The opportunists and the idiots.
The opportunists actually think they are smart, but majority of them contribute little or nothing to the GDP.
The idiots are those with low IQ and they just want to live without taking up the challenges of nation building.
They are the cheap recruits of the title chasers posing and posturing as politicians used as expendables.
Among them are the hordes of Nigerian girls and women who think the best they can do is use their sexuality to make ends meet. They have shallow lives from the dumb to the dumbest of them and the tragedy is they breed their kind and increase their population of idiots.

The majority of state governments have failed.
A simple tour of the states is all you need to see how these political office holders, their accomplices and beneficiaries have bastardized democracy and vandalized governance. And we have incompetent commissioners and ministers who are mere title chasers and not nation builders.
Of course they cannot perform, because they cannot give what they don't have. And they can only fake it. grin

The lawmakers are collecting millions of dollars as salaries and allowances without conscience and without shame and the worse state of anyone alive is to have no conscience and no shame. Yeah! There are exceptional lawmakers at the National Assembly. Please, show me how much they have done for their constituencies.
The Senate President, Senator David Mark and Senator Chris Ngige have given out scholarships to many students from their constituencies. What of the others?
I know a senator who has spent more millions pampering himself than what he has spent on the scholarships he boasted that he has given to his beneficiaries.
How many of these political office holders send their children to public schools in Nigeria?
If the public schools are not good enough for their children, then who do we blame?

Mobile Investments Create Opportunities for Operators in Nigeria

Mobile Investments Create Opportunities for Operators in Nigeria

BOSTON, July 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Nigeria remains the largest mobile market in Africa and the Middle East, and with mobile penetration at only 66.3% in 2012, opportunities exist for operators to increase their subscriber base by investing in improving and expanding their networks, according to a new report from Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com).

Nigeria: As Operators Invest in Networks, New Telecom Regulations Boost Competition offers a precise profile of the country's telecommunications, media and technology sectors based on proprietary data from Pyramid's research in the market. It provides a detailed competitive analysis of both the fixed and mobile sectors, tracks the market shares of technologies and services and monitors the introduction and spread of new technologies.

"With four GSM operators and many smaller CDMA operators, Nigeria is one of the most competitive markets in the region," says Ousmane Yatera, Analyst at Pyramid Research.  The growth of the market is forcing operators to invest in capacity, upgrades and expansion of their networks in rural areas, all of which increase the costs of operation. This, together with reducing ARPS, is leading operators to look to streamline their processes. One way of doing this is via infrastructure sharing, a concept that is being supported by many operators in the country, he notes.

Nigeria, Senator Yerima and the Dangers of Girl Child Marriage

Senator Yerima and Constitutional Review
- By Maryam Uwais

Once again, Senator Yerima is in the news, claiming Islam as the basis for his argument that a girl automatically transforms into an adult of ‘full age’ once she is married, with the attendant responsibilities that relate to the renunciation of citizenship, irrespective of her age or mental capacity. Because the Senator from Zamfara State has gone public with his personal comprehension of the Shari’a, it has become necessary to respond publicly to his utterances.

It should be pointed out, however, that several media reports on the constitutional review debate at the Senate give the impression that underage marriage has been endorsed by the Senate Chambers. Facts are that S.29 of the 1979 Constitution permits a Nigerian citizen of ‘full age’ to renounce his or her citizenship by declaration in a prescribed manner, for which purpose ‘full age’ was stated to be 18 years and above. The subsection also provides that, ‘any woman who is married shall be deemed to be of full age’. In its current efforts to review the Constitution, the Senate Committee had determined that the particular subsection should be deleted, basically because citizenship has no bearing on gender, as for example, voting, the right to drive a car, possess a weapon or such similar social interactions that are evolving or are germane to a democratic Nation. Senator Yerima, however, vehemently argued (and lobbied) against the removal of the clause, on the grounds that deleting that clause was against (his understanding of) Islam. In his understanding, a girl, once married, automatically assumes the full mental capacity and responsibility to consciously make the prescribed declaration of renouncing her citizenship.

This position needs to scrutinized carefully, against the backdrop of similar positions that obtain under the Shari’a and in our context, as a Nation. Does it then follow that the married girl who is below 18, at election time, would be permitted to vote, or is her not being issued a voters card un-Islamic? Is the Senate now going to make an exception to that law, permitting her to vote, or even drive, in accordance with (Senator Yerima’s understanding of) Islam?

Contrary to the position conveyed by the Senator from Zamfara, there is certainly no unanimity of positions on such contemporary matters of social interaction, within Islamic jurists or the various Schools of Thought. Surely where there is ‘silence in the texts’ (i.e primary sources) or lack of unanimity as regards a particular practice, that opening allows for a society to determine for itself what is in its best interest (maslaha), in its own context. What about married Muslim girls who inherit property? Is it not the position that in some cases, where not considered sufficiently mature (‘sufaha’, based on Qur’an 4:6), such property remains in the custody of her guardian, until she grows to be intellectually mature? This would, of course, depend on her age, mental capacity and the size and nature of the property. Why does such property not devolve upon her automatically upon marriage, to deal with it as she wishes, irrespective of her mental capacity? There definitely appears to be no basis, under the Shari’a, that would compel a girl to deal with matters of such gravity as the renunciation of citizenship, merely because she is married. Islam is certainly not so presumptuous or harsh as to burden her with what she is mentally and physically incapable of bearing. Her guardian is permitted to determine the age or stage at which such a child can be entrusted with such grave responsibilities, the assessment of her mental capacity being the main determinant.

As a Muslim woman (without pretensions of scholarship) forever striving for knowledge, research into these matters has revealed that in matters of social interaction (mu’amalat), there is a lot of latitude in what is permitted, unless it is expressly prohibited by a clear text. The rules are certainly not so definitive. What is also evident is that the ‘best interests of the child’ is a paramount consideration within Islam, along with the principle of public good (maslaha or istislah). The operational rules are not defined (probably deliberately, in my humble view) and the determination of such issues is best left to the experience, custom and context of the particular society. The Qur’an provides that the predominant consideration in matters relating to children would depend on the point at which they can be said to not be ‘sufaha’ (mentally immature) anymore, in the context of that particular community.

It is interesting that Senator Yerima would rather link the weighty and dispassionate subject of citizenship with his understanding of gender vis a vis his perception of the age of marriage, rather than with other matters of social interaction, such as those relating to inheritance rights, driving or even voting. Indeed, citizenship is a contemporary phenomenon within the Sharia, as in the early days the concept of citizenship had not been defined and people traveled across boundaries, without restriction. In a Muslim community, when matters evolve, it is for scholars or experts in Islamic legal philosophy-‘Usul-al-Fiqh’- and juristic reasoning (and not even those solely learned in the Qur’an-‘Mussafirun’, the Fiqh-‘Fuqaha’ or the Hadith-‘Muhaddithun’), to analyze the issues with a view to arriving at an appropriate position for the context of that relevant community. In this particular instance, it is certainly perplexing for the Senator to insist so categorically that even a married ‘intellectually immature’ girl must be permitted to renounce her citizenship, irrespective of her mental capacity. The foundation for such a general and sweeping statement within the Shari’a is difficult to locate.

The public good remains the overriding consideration in the process of analytical reasoning by those qualified for the purpose, so long as the deductions are not in direct conflict with the primary sources of the Shari’a. Therefore, in following arguments repeatedly canvassed by the Senator, it may be necessary to examine the context in which we live, to determine what is good, for the purpose of encouragement and support, and what remains harmful to our society, to be confronted, discouraged or prohibited by Muslim jurists.

Today the North of Nigeria continues to throw up Nigeria’s poorest indices on matters relating to healthcare, nutrition, education, empowerment and productivity. Consequently, unemployment, insecurity, violence and poverty remain rife in that region. Statistics have it that 2/3 of the 102 million poor people in Nigeria live in the North. Extreme poverty in the North translates into extreme vulnerability to the effects of climate change, food security and so much more. Incidentally, over half of the women in the North are married off by the age of 16 and commence childbirth within the first year of marriage. Also, of the 16 million births by girls below the age of 18, 9 out of 10 of them are married.

Facts are that nearly half of all the children under 5 years of age are malnourished in the North East zone, with women and children in the nutrition ‘high-burden’ States of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe and Zamfara suffering the most from malnutrition, wasting and stunting. This singular factor remains the underlying cause for 53% of under-5 deaths. If the child is stunted in its first 1000 days, that condition is irreversible, so the future of these children, and the larger population, is permanently shortchanged. The health and nutritional needs of mothers, new-borns and children are closely linked, with young mothers accounting for a majority of severely malnourished children.

Multiple health risks arising from child marriage include the intimate exploitation (including forced intimate relations) that she is subjected to, as well as limited access to reproductive health services, despite the real and present danger of contracting diseases such as HIV/AIDS, STIs (sexually transmitted diseases) and the debilitating ailment of VVF/RVF (VVF-a tear in the flesh between the vagina and the urinary passage, usually due to prolonged labour, resulting in uncontrolled urine or feces in the case of recto-womanly fistulae-RVF), including the abandonment that comes with such ailments. Nigeria, with 2% of the world’s population, has 10% of VVF patients. Three-quarters of those with VVF/RVF are young girls who are not yet physically mature but have suffered trauma in their first pregnancy.

Statistics show that stillbirths and deaths are 50% more likely in babies born to mothers younger than 18, as against babies born to mothers above that age. Each day, 144 women die in childbirth in Nigeria, with the North East alone having 5 times the global rate of maternal mortality. The lack of information and access to support ultimately results in psycho-social and emotional consequences, domestic violence, abandoned (street) children, with the attendant deprivations of their rights and freedoms, whose wellbeing is severely compromised. The prevalence of the abuse of the right to the exercise of divorce by Muslim men has only compounded the situation, leading to so many negative social deviations such as substance abuse (that has become so rampant), commercial sex work and the complete loss of values in the entire family set up.

Many of these adolescents are married off to men much older than they, and because of the associated power differentials, this singular factor impedes communication between them, with the girl having no negotiation skills in crucial decision-making that may affect her life. Having lost out on these critical life opportunities, these married adolescents can never aspire to living as meaningful and productive members of society. Not being able to participate actively in the community translates to their losing out completely on benefiting from economic activity and earning a decent income. Many of these girls remain excluded from community life, having been separated from peers and family members by marriage. Depression sets in a life of diminished opportunities. The community loses out completely; the economy cannot improve where half its population is stuck in this rut.

Child marriage, from available statistics, ultimately hampers the efforts of these young adolescents from acquiring an education, as sooner than later, they find it difficult to combine the onerous responsibilities of being a wife and mother, with schooling. They drop out, if they have not been removed for the purpose of marriage, in the first place. Consequently, 70.8% of young women aged 20-29 in the North West zone are unable to read or write. Due to the fact that these girls are deprived so early of an education (including the access to information and knowledge) they remain bereft of the purchasing power necessary for an adequate diet, healthcare, skills, or even recourse to support in emergencies, all of which would enable them rise above the circumstances of abject poverty. It is paradoxical that Muslims like Senator Yerima would rather their wives and daughters be treated by female medical personnel if they fall ill, and yet they are, by continuously advocating for child marriage, deliberately closing the avenues for girls to aspire to such professions.

Deprivations of formal and non-formal education translate, at such an early age, into restrictions on mobility, domestic burdens, the denial of sundry freedoms in respect of survival, development and participation, as well as the loss of adolescent years. Indeed, children of young, uneducated mothers are also less likely to attain high levels of education, perpetuating cycles of low literacy and limited livelihood opportunities. Child marriage, therefore, ultimately deprives societies of the intellectual and financial/livelihood contributions of girls, and of their offspring. It is no wonder then that the North continues to portray such poor ratings in almost all aspects of human Endeavour.

As a consequence, MDGs 1 (relating to eradicating extreme poverty and hunger), 2 (on education), 4 (on reducing child mortality), 5 (on maternal health), 6 (on combating diseases) remain unattainable goals (at least in Northern Nigeria), if we cannot confront the consequences and implications of child marriage. Evidently, the geography of poverty requires a coherent and urgent Northern strategy and a solution to the instability that has bedeviled the region in recent years. Against this background of grim data, we can ill afford to play politics with the obvious deficiencies in our human capital. The North as an intrinsic part of Nigeria needs to improve on all fronts, to impact positively on Nigeria’s progress and support its growth. Since child marriage has all these devastating and diminishing implications, surely checking the increase in the practice can only trigger and catalyze positive growth, in so many dimensions.

It is certainly not mandatory in Islam that girls must be married off as minors, so to keep insisting that this practice must remain sacrosanct, given the background of needs in Northern Nigeria, is incongruous, even under the Shari’a. Where a practice is determined to be merely permissible and not mandatory, it is considered practicable and entirely feasible within Islamic jurisprudence, to discourage or prohibit it, where it is found to be so harmful to individuals and to the community. Countries such as Yemen, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Somalia and Bangladesh, with majority or high Muslim populations have set a minimum age for marriage as 18, in the acknowledgment that there are serious social, physical and mental health risks associated with child marriages. This progressive step became necessary, in that these indisputable facts placed a heavy burden on the accountable and God-fearing leadership in majority Muslim countries, to protect the vulnerable in their midst.

It is, therefore, not unreasonable to expect that educated elite and public figures such as Senator Yerima, being conscious of their grave responsibilities to prohibit harm and to enjoin good in our own context, should actually discourage this devaluing and belittling practice of early marriage, in the public good, for the protection of the vulnerable and the realization of social benefits. To enable our girls attain their fullest possible potential is definitely a target that Senator Yerima should also be working passionately towards, along with the rest of Nigerians who yearn for a better future.

Indeed, the overriding objectives of the Sharia include the promotion of human dignity, justice, compassion, the removal of hardship, the prevention of harm, the realization of the lawful benefits of the people, and the education of the individual by inculcating in him a sense of self discipline and restraint, which aims are by no means exclusive. All else may be adapted to achieve these ends, which measures may encompass matters of concern not only to law but also to economic development, administration and politics. For those that reflect, the hardship that these little girls experience, where married off and divorced soon after, so wantonly, is certainly unacceptable within the faith.

Although the fundamentals of faith and the practical pillars on which they stand remain immutable in principle, they may be interpreted and justified at the level of implementation in the exercise of public good. This process must of need be carried out solely by persons learned and eminently qualified to speak on the subject matter in question. We must always bear in mind that the ‘appropriation’ of divine authority in religious interpretation is best left to Scholars learned in Islamic legal philosophy and analytical reasoning. Having acquired the requisite knowledge and expertise (including the capacity to weigh the various views in the particular sphere of learning in the context of our times), these Jurists would also need to have imbibed, at the barest minimum, the attributes of humility, compassion, reflection, wisdom, self-restraint, diligence, objectivity, along with piety. Our learned Scholars must stand up and be heard, rather than remain silent on matters that so adversely affect us as individuals, as a region, a Nation and as members of a global community, which challenges paradoxically controvert the deeper meaning and purpose of the Shari’a.

Back to the issue in contention, it is important to commend the thinking behind the decision to delete the constitutional clause that seeks to lumber even an ‘intellectually immature’ girl, where married, with the grave responsibility of the power to renounce her citizenship, thereby elevating the subject of citizenship to the level whereby both men and women have similar responsibilities, without discrimination. It is hoped that ultimately, members of the Senate would reflect deeply on the implications of their recent action and revisit their decision to retain the contentious clause, if only to ensure that every Nigerian citizen of full age, without distinction, is subjected to similar standards and responsibilities under the provisions of our Constitution.
