New York Bomber Suspect Arrest Prompts Warning: "Tune Into Your Surroundings During Thanksgiving Travel," Antiterrorism Expert Says

PR Newswire

BOSTON, Nov. 21, 2011

BOSTON, Nov. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- "The recent arrest of alleged New York bomber Jose Pimenthal underscores the need for all of us to be vigilant during the Thanksgiving travel rush," warns antiterrorism expert Todd McGhee who pioneered new security measures at Logan Airport, post 9/11 and later co-founded Protecting the Homeland Innovations, LLC in Braintree, Mass.

"Warning signs of a lone-wolf terrorist include hanging back when everyone is in a rush, appearing trancelike or spouting ideology. Tune into your surroundings instead of your iPod to pick up on out-of-step behaviors that could mean trouble," says McGhee.

On Sunday, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the arrest of Jose Pimentel of Manhattan, "a 27-year-old Al Qaeda sympathizer" who he said was motivated by propaganda and planned to harm returning U.S. troops.

"If a stranger has to think about answering a simple questions like, 'Are you visiting your family?' it's a sign of trouble," says McGhee, adding, "This is what we teach security professionals to look for – subconscious responses people cannot hide. It's a like a tell in a poker player."

"Airport security is getting better, but the public must be aware of what to watch for and how to respond," says McGhee. McGhee's PHI (www.phitraining.com) provides antiterrorist training to security professionals at TSA, AMTRAK, NYPD and other agencies as well as public awareness campaigns.

"Pay attention to the ebb and flow of human activity in airports, rail stations and bus terminals to become more aware of behaviors that are out of step with the crowd. If you sense a threat go with your instincts. Move away and alert the nearest security professional or a gate agent. Do not try to detain the individual yourself. Your safety comes first," says McGhee.

McGhee adds, "Outside the boarding gates, airports are as public as city streets where anybody up to no good can hang out. Situational awareness helps to keep us safe from belligerent drunks, sexual predators, scammers and other troublemakers as well as terrorists."

Captain Idris Wada: The Best Choice For Kogi State

Captain Idris Wada: The Best Choice For Kogi State

~ By Ibrahim Usman

All men are born but not all are born great. The land of Kogi was blessed when Capt. Idris Ichalla Wada was born at Dekina in Kogi State on 26 August 1950. Educated at the Government Secondary School, Dekina and the Federal Government College, Sakata he graduated with a Higher School Certificate. From his School days, he developed very keen interest in aviation, especially in flying as a pilot. His aspirations were met when he gained admission into the Nigeria College of Aviation Technology, Zaria from where he graduated in 1972 with flying colors, bagging a Commercial Pilots’ license.

He proceeded immediately to train for a Flight Instructors License/QFI, which he obtained in record time at Air Service Training College, Perth, Scotland. As a flight instructor he trained students from many African countries.

Captain Wada’s general handling of his machine and students was rated above average. Hence in 1976 he was put forward for the Airline Transport Pilots Licence, again in Perth, Scotland. His interest and dedication to training was recognized and appreciated by the authorities who promptly granted him the opportunity to go to Burnside-Ott Aviation College, Opa-Locka, Miami, Florida. He graduated as a certified Flight Instructor/CE II and a certified Ground Instructor (Instrument).

Armed with these qualifications and experience he switched over to commercial flying which had been his long desire. Thus he joined Nigeria Airways in 1978 where he flew B737 and F28 in command as Captain. In 1993 Capt. Wada realized that he was more gifted in management than just being a line captain, consequently he joined United Airline Services Ltd., Kano, as the Chief Pilot and General Manager. He operated as Captain in Command of Boeing 727 and Boeing 707 cargo with the Company having obtained USA FAAATPL at American Airlines Flight Training Centre, Dallas, Texas. He managed this airline until 1985 when he floated the Executive Aviation Services (Nig.) Ltd. and nurtured it to a first class cargo airline in Nigeria. As its Chief Executive officer he put into it, his wealth of experience which made remarkable business success of the airline.

Not satisfied with the Air Cargo business alone, he extended his sphere of activities to the Domestic Passenger business by forming Executive Airline Services Ltd. in 1994 specializing in Corporate Charter Services and Executive Aircraft Management with HS 125 Executive Jet. This developed into BAC I II scheduled Domestic Passenger Services with one Boeing 727-200 in 1996. He has built up a fleet of four British Aerospace BAC 1- 11-500 Super Jets on scheduled flight services to Abuja, Jos, Kano, Enugu and Port - Harcourt, with Lagos as hub. He has a dazzling array of professional qualifications, a few of which are listed here:

Nigerian Airline Transport Pilot Licence No.992.

British Airline Transport Pilot Licence No.1 04990

USAlFM Air Transport Rating No.2223411

Rated on B737, B727, B707, DC8, F28, HS-125, BAC1-11 Jet.

NCAA designated Type and Instrument Rating Examiner.
Capt. Wada is active in various national and international (UK and USA) aviation seminars and committees, and holds several management diplomas and certificates to his credit. He obtained from University, of Abuja a B.Sc Degree in Business Administration. He speaks and writes fluently in English, Hausa and Igala. His hobbies are Tennis, Golf, Music, Reading and Current Affairs. He is the Chairman of Aero consult Ltd an approved NCAA Certified Aviation Training Organization (ATO) and Aviation Consultancy Company.

Capt. Wada is not only a good husband and a loving and responsible parent, he is also a philanthropist to the core. He has uplifted many Nigerians through his many poverty alleviation and corporate social responsibility efforts.
As the December 2011 Governorship elections draw near in Kogi state, the sterling qualities possessed by this son of the soil has come to the fore notice of the masses. The people need a man who is possessed of intellect, administrative qualities and experience which surpasses that of the average citizen, a man whose abilities have been proven on a cosmopolitan turf, far beyond the shores of Nigeria. Kogi state cannot be deprived of the opportunities and potentialities dwelling in Capt Idris Wada. He is not just the PDP Governorship aspirant for Kogi state for the December 2011 elections but the best man for the job. In his words Capt Wada said, “I’m a product of a humble background, where the fear of God, hard work, respect for elders and authorities were preached on a daily basis”. “These values ensured that I took my destiny into my own hands right from the tender age of five, and have kept me going up until today, where I stand before you to seek your support. Having being trained by the Federal Government of Nigeria, my commitment to serving my country especially my home state of Kogi is sacrosanct, and this in essence has shaped my character over the years. When you vote for me, it is more than an endorsement of one particular individual. You vote for a vision of how things will be different. How things could be better for you and your family in your local area. We know that all communities are desirous of equal treatment, and as someone who believes in opportunities for all, I will strive to ensure that your communities derive maximum value for your vote.
Fundamentally, I take the public trust embodied by your vote seriously. ”

Thank God for divine providence, thank God for Captain Idris Wada.

Ngor/Okpala: Non Acquisition of Textbooks among Public Schools Students and Other Challenges

Ngor/Okpala: Non Acquisition of Textbooks among Public Schools Students and Other Challenges

By Nwaorgu Faustinus

The role textbooks play in the advancement and enlightenment of humanity cannot be over stressed especially in the education of public and private primary school pupils as well as their secondary school counterparts. Apart from being a veritable source of acquiring knowledge, it also serves as an invaluable medium for preparing public and private school students for both internal and external examinations as they burn the midnight oil in order to make good grades. Furthermore, students consult their textbooks when assignment or homework is given thus playing the role of an assistant in getting the assignment done.

But what has continued to agitate the minds of many observers of the issue at hand is the alarming rate of non possession or rather acquisition of textbooks by public and even private school students in Ngor/Okpala council area. Investigation by this writer showed that few students have Mathematics and English Language textbooks as a result of the importance teachers and parents attach to them. It is not an exaggeration that out of ten randomly picked students, only three or four have Mathematics or English Textbooks not to mention other subjects’ textbooks whose possession have become very rare. A visit to public schools and dispassionate assessment of the numbers of students that have textbooks will surely make the assessor sad.

Question: who is to blame for this state of affairs? No doubt, parents should be the ones to take the bulk of the blame as the provision of textbooks for their wards should be their responsibility. Poverty one of the vicissitudes of life, in addition to other family challenges has been adduced for the inability of most parents to purchase textbooks for the various subjects taught in schools. The situation most times prevent some public school students from solving their take-home assignment as there is no handy textbooks they can use as a guide, assistance or aid to get the assignment done. Often times such homework is left unattended as there is no textbook or willing individual or person knowledgeable that can assist them tackle such academic work.

The various tiers of government should not be excluded from the blame, for there are still public schools that have not received textbooks either from the state government or local government since the inception of democracy in 1999. A visit to some public school libraries will reveal a sad story of indifference by the state government and local government to equip them with contemporary textbooks for the students to use.

No doubt our parents and constituted authorities whose responsibility is to provide textbooks for their wards and public schools especially at the grassroots have failed, taking into cognizance the state of some of the libraries which is best described as abysmal. Needless to say that such state of affairs needs to be reversed for the better. Therefore, a proactive step should be taken by parents, state government and the local government with a view to providing textbooks for students and public schools’ libraries. As an addition, public-spirited individuals, nongovernmental organizations and cooperate organisation touched by the seemingly appalling state of libraries in the council area can donate textbooks as part of their corporate social responsibility

Similarly, the state government led by Governor Owelle Rochas should as a matter of utmost importance employ teachers who will teach some subjects where teachers for such subjects are lacking. The above request has become imperative in view of complaint being made by students of some public secondary schools in the council area.

It is being alleged in some quarters that teachers deployed or transferred to schools that are far and located at the outskirts of some rural communities immediately work their transfer or deployment back to urban-based schools as a result of the availability of social and infrastructural facilities. But for how long will the government continue to tolerate such misdemeanour meted out to rural-based public schools and what is it doing to nip the trend in the bud? It behoves the appropriate authority charged with posting of teachers in rural areas to follow it up to ensure that those posted to rural schools do not influence their posting back to the state capital.

With the present upsurge in the population of public school students, especially in the rural areas brought about by the introduction of free education in Imo State by the current administration of Chief Rochas Okorocha, it has therefore become expedient to send teachers to schools where their services are urgently needed. I remember at the time I did a piece with the title, “Imo State Government: Save Amala/Ntu Secondary School from Total Rot” published in some online media that the above school among other schools need teachers that will teach a number of subjects that has no teachers to teach them. The earlier the state government do this the better.

God bless Ngor/Okpala.

It was the monthly screening of the iREP International Documentary Film Festival Forum in association with the Goethe Institut.

The audience at the outdoor screening of ADOPTED at the Freedom Park on the closing day of the 13th Lagos Book and Art Festival on Sunday November 20, 2011.

With its roots in an art project, the organization ADOPTED finds African Godparents for Adult Europeans. Ludger has recently become aware of ADOPTED. Frustrated by his emotionally cold environment and isolated from friends and family, he signs up and is immediately chosen. Thelma, on the other hand, waits with impatience for the moment of her departure. A family in Accra (Ghana) has already agreed to be her Godparents and she’s ready to go. Gisela’s decision to leave followed the death of her husband, who left her alone and without prospects. The film highlights the protagonists’ situation observing them as they travel to West Africa where they approach their new Godparents – misunderstandings are, of course, unavoidable.

Wole Soyinka and J.P. Clark at 13th Lagos Book and Art Festival

Lagos Freedom Park at night, the main venue of the 13th Lagos Book and Art Festival.

First African Nobel laureate in Literature Prof. Wole Soyinka and famous dramatist Prof. J.P. Clark were among the special guests on Saturday as they graced the Town Talk on "The Book in the Knowledge Economy" at the on going 13th Lagos Book and Art festival (LABAF) at the Freedom Park on Broad Street, Lagos. Other special guests included Penny Compton and Maggie Robertson from the Hay Festival.

LABAF is the biggest book fair and art event in West Africa founded and organized annually by the Committee For Relevant Art (CORA) in Nigeria.

The festival ends on Sunday with the Arthouse Forum on Art Of The Biography:Reviews and discussions of Femi Osofisan’s J. P. Clark: A Voyage, Adewale Pearce’s A Peculiar Tragedy: J. P. Clark and the beginning of modern Nigerian literature and Dele Olojede/Onukaba Adinoyi Ojo’s Born To Run: a biography of Dele Giwa at noon, followed by the CORA Stampede on "The Nigerian Abroad: Fictional Accounts Of The Immigrant Experience". There will be a panel of discussion on the The Phoenix by Chika Unigwe, Some Kind Of Black by Diran Adebayo, 26A by Dianne Evans, A Squatter’s Tale by Ike Oguine, Her Majesty’s Visit by Onukaba Adinoyi-Ojo, Icarius Girl by Helen Oyeyemi, Lawless by Sefi Atta and The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

The festival's play is Waiting Room by Wole Oguntokun, to commemorate a fresh start of Nigerian democracy. And the grand finale is the Nigerian premiere of Adopted, a German/Ghanaian documentary directed by Gudrun F. Widlok.

ADOPTED is an agency through which extended families in Africa adopt grown-up Europeans who are detached from their families. The film attends three chosen ones to their new families in Ghana.

Ludger from Berlin just recently found out about ADOPTED. Disappointed with his emotionless surroundings and isolated from friends and family, he has been searching for a long time for an escape. He hesitantly participates in ADOPTED and is selected sooner than expected.

Thelma, on the other hand, can`t wait for the moment of departure. A family in Accra (Ghana) has already agreed to adopt her and she is very pleased to get to know them soon. She packed her suitcases, gave away her furniture and is flying to Africa tomorrow – perhaps forever.

Chevron In Open Conflict With Brazil and Ecuador Over Worsening Oil Spills

American Company Faces Loss of Credibility With Oil Producing Nations in Latin America

QUITO, Ecuador, Nov. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Chevron, which already faces allegations of fraud over an $18 billion liability in Ecuador for environmental damage, is being accused in Brazil of trying to cover up the extent of an oil spill caused by one of the company's offshore drilling rigs, leading to the company's second major conflict with a key Latin American oil-producing nation.

Misleading statements from Chevron about the size of the November 8th spill and its containment have led several Brazilian officials and environmental groups to criticize Chevron and demand more transparency from the oil giant, said Karen Hinton, spokesperson for the Ecuadorians who successfully sued Chevron for massive oil contamination in the rainforest.

According to the environmental group Greenpeace, whose activists today spilled black ink at the door of Chevron's Rio office, satellite pictures obtained by NASA show a spill "10 times bigger" than Chevron's estimate of 330 barrels a day. Rio state's Environmental Secretary Carlos Mink said, "The accident must be bigger than what is being announced. We are going to demand compensation…. The company must be punished in an exemplary manner."

Chevron already is in open conflict with Ecuador's government as part of its strategy to discredit the $18 billion judgment against it obtained in Ecuador's courts by rainforest residents. For almost three decades, Chevron's predecessor company Texaco dumped billions of gallons of toxic oil waste into the Amazon, leading to an environmental and public health catastrophe that dwarfs the extent of the BP calamity, according to evidence before the Ecuador court.

"Chevron's oil disaster in Brazil, and apparent cover-up, once again shows that the company has a systemic problem in failing to meet its environmental obligations to the communities where it does business," said Pablo Fajardo, the lead Ecuadorian lawyer who defeated Chevron in the 18-year legal battle.

"This type of dishonest behavior clearly puts Chevron at a competitive disadvantage relative to its peers, particularly in Latin America," he added.

Humberto Piaguaje, an indigenous leader in the area of Ecuador where Chevron operated, said Brazil should not trust Chevron to take responsibility for its actions.

"In Ecuador, we have lived with Chevron's contamination for five decades, and the company has refused to pay for the damage and destruction it caused. All governments in Latin America should beware of these basic facts before they do business with this company," said Piaguaje.

Chevron's management of its oil spills is not much better even in the United States. The oil giant recently agreed to a $4.5 million settlement with environmental officials in the state of Utah for two oil spills that polluted a creek and city pond. In that incident, Chevron also underestimated the amount of oil spilled, which contaminated a lake and impacted fish and wildlife.

In Ecuador, Chevron has tried to pressure President Rafael Correa to violate his country's Constitution – which guarantees Separation of Powers and an independent judiciary – and reach into the courthouse in Lago Agrio to quash the lawsuit, said Fajardo.

After an eight-year trial, the Ecuador court found Chevron responsible for the systematic dumping of billions of gallons of toxic waste into the Amazon from 1964 to 1992, when Texaco operated a large oil concession with 378 wells and production stations. The dumping decimated indigenous groups and created a spike in cancer rates and other oil-related illnesses, according to evidence before the court.

The indigenous and farmer communities in the area of Ecuador where Chevron operated have accused the oil giant of fraud in trying to cover up several waste pits with dirt and engaging in a sham remediation to hide its environmental crimes, said Fajardo.
